[Wikimedia-l] Re: Blocking users for Palestinian flag

2021-07-03 Thread Frederick Noronha
This is problematic at very many levels:
* Are we policing intent or actual wrongdoing -- i.e. bias in actual edits?
* Is there something wrong in me aspiring for some political entity (which
doesn't exist currently) or does it become wrong only when my bias actually
shows in my editing?
* If the former case, isn't this some form of Thought Policing?
* Should we also not ban all forms of affiliations to religion,
nationality, gender (her/his/its) or race and skin colour, as these also
reflect some or the other bias?
* Someone said slavery is against human rights. Well, I don't think this
was always the situation, and that was precisely my point. Human standards
keep changing It was a perfectly fine business at one point of time, as
was selling opium to China.
* Well, nobody would object to "Free Tibet", because that is seen as a
politically correct cause in today's unipolar world. If the Chinese were at
the helm of a unipolar world, I'm sure we would all be thinking
differently. Especially me!
Let's keep some space for diversity, please. As some person said, let a
thousand flowers bloom! FN
PS: Above all, those who want to whisper into our ears as to what's wrong
with this user or his/her actions, can't we have this discussion under the
glare of public scrutiny and accountability?

Just seeking clarity:
Is there anything wrong with expressing a political opinion on a userpage?
A lot of our badges, flags, icons might have some or the other political
history behind them, just that these are seen as more "normal" by today's
standards. At one time, slavery too was considered quite legal.
Can't this be discussed in the public domain?

[Wikimedia-l] Wikipedians of Goa User Group....

2020-12-10 Thread Frederick Noronha
Dear all: Our annual report is here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedians_of_Goa_User_Group#2020_updates
It's our first year as an affiliate, and liking it.

2020 updates[edit

]

Despite the pandemic, the year has been marked by quite a bit of activity
and some new welcome initiatives too. 2020 also marks the first year since
the Wikipedians of Goa User Group was approved, in mid-2019. We have seen
growth of the Wikipedia visibility in Goa and growth of Goa's visibility on
the Wikipedia. We hope that this trend can be sustained and see further
growth. Some initiatives from the last year or so:

   - The Discoverer
, Isidore
   Dantas

   , Konknni Mogi

and
other volunteers have been working assiduously on the Konkani Wiktionary
project, which aims at building an open and sharable Konkani dictionary in
cyberspace. A Wiktionary workshop and meet-ups were held at St. Xavier's
College, Mapusa in May and December 2019. Since they had been meeting their
monthly targets in the incubator to keep the project current, the Language
Committee of the Wikimedia Foundation approved the project on 27 March
2020. The Konkani Wiktionary moved to its newly-created site
on 21 May 2020. The Wiktionary has
over 2300 entries as of November 2020. Congratulations!
   - SerTanmay

   , YourTara

,
Julius and team have launched and started the *Wikipedia Weekends*
initiative
on WhatsApp. This is a small group (currently about 14 members) of
coordinators, planners and active networkers who plan and undertake
activities of interest to wider groups and individuals in Goa.
   - On October 17, 2020, the *Wikipedia Weekends* organised an hour-long
Google Meet event focussing on Wikimedia Commons and the hows, whys of
sharing content there. Some 26 interested members participated and stayed
with the event through much of it. We are hoping this will result in more
relevant photographs being shared on and from Goa
   .
   - On October 18, 2020 (Sunday), another *Wikipedia Weekend* event was
held online, focusing on editing the Wikipedia. Over two dozen enthusiastic
   participants took part.
   - Fredericknoronha
   's contribution
was acknowledged with his selection as the Wikipedia Editor of the Week
   recognition on March 29, 2020.
   - To build wider relevance about Goa on the Wikipedia, and greater
interest in Goa for the Wikipedia two initiatives were built offering
ambitious overviews related to the world of w:music
    and w:animal rights
    respectively. These are: List
   of bands in Goa
and Animal welfare and rights in Goa
    It is
thought that these issues would not only highlight issues important to the
region of Goa, but also promote more Wikipedia-awareness in Goa itself.
   - To promote the relevance of the Wikipedia at the grassroots in Goa, a
collaborative project is being undertaken to build and promote Wikipedia
pages for every village in Goa
   . This will mean
creating (or improving) for some 340+ villages here. Fredericknoronha has
undertaken to take responsibility for the villages of the sub-district (
   *taluka*) of w:Bardez , and
currently about seven out of 43 villages are remaining to be created.
   -

   President Joe Biden by AngFerrao
WGUG has been encouraging photo enthusiasts, artists and other creative
persons to share photos and other material via the Wikimedia Commons.
Alongside is a digital artwork by AngFerrao, a Goan artist, caricaturist
and cartoonist, who shared her sketch of newly-elected w:President Joe
   Biden .
   - Goan expat artist Dom Martin has also donated a

   Sita Valles by Dom Martin
copyright-free sketch on Sita Valles, a locally little-known Goan figure
until an entry from the Portuguese

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Annoying ads

2020-12-06 Thread Frederick Noronha
It's 0415 IST on the West Coast of India, and am just writing to say that I
always read the hands-folded symbol as a "namaste":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namaste
It's a kind of a respectful, non-contact greeting, and here we wouldn't
take it as religious, more cultural if anything.
For other non-contact forms of greetings during Covid times, depending on
one's traditions, one could also choose *salaam* or *aadaab *too. In a
multi-cultural, multi-religious region (like South Asia), the more the
merrier. There are more too:
https://www.news18.com/news/buzz/not-just-namaste-here-are-some-other-greetings-from-around-the-world-that-are-coronavirus-proof-2535697.html

But I don't think computer programmers worldwide are so clued in to subtle
nuances on culture and society.
In any case, as George Bernard Shaw says: The will to believe creates its
own evidence.

2020-10-24 Thread Frederick Noronha
That's good news.
We have one in close proximity [1], so looking forward to sharing synergies
in case this could help.
Images should be easy. Likewise, such thematic groups could be an entry
point to involve more potential Wikipedians with an interest in such
issues. Could also push us too to do better.
On the other hand, any chances of getting groups that look at heritage
issues beyond the official definition and more representative of our
diverse world? Okay, this is going offtopic :-) FN

Is it possible to convince more international non-profits and government
organisations (especially taxpayer-funded research organisations) that it
would be in their interest as well to share the findings under some

[Wikimedia-l] [Affiliates] Recognition of the Wikipedians of Goa User Group

2019-08-03 Thread Frederick Noronha
Dear all,

Thanks very much indeed for your kind words and warm welcome to the
Wikipedians of Goa User Group.

Our real work starts now! We hope we can live up to the confidence placed
in us, and fulfil our commitments to be an effective user group.

Since we are more geography-focussed (and also looking at Goa's connections
with the rest of India and the outside world), we look forward to working
with all possible groups and individuals on any project that intersects
with Goa. Paulo, we would love to do a lot more in the world of lusophony.
We need your help and involvement too!

Regards and good wishes,

Frederick.

Yaroslav, Which world are you talking about? North America and Europe?

When it comes to Asia (which I'm part of) and Africa, possibly Latin
America too, we haven't even written down 1% of the diversity of these
places. Leave aside getting it up onto the Wikipedia!

Of course, I agree with the suggestion for new approaches (if I read you
right). This is particularly true in a part of the world where much of the
discussion is still in the oral domain, is often not in print; when it's in
print, it is not digitised. Even when digitised, chances are that it's in a
non-English language, which is very hard to find very search engines. (No
wonder that some of the prominent people from our regions are continually
getting dismissed as non-notable, which I see as another form of 'systemic
bias').

Give it a thought, please.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Recognition of the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group

2018-10-17 Thread Frederick Noronha
Congrats, guys! We are just 800 kms north of you, and are trying to build a
Goa Wikipedia Group (focussing on local content in all languages, including
and specially Konkani http://gom.wikipedia.org )

I'd be grateful if anyone could point me to the URL which lays down the
procedure for forming and getting recognition for a user group.

2018-06-27 Thread Frederick Noronha
Congratulations from Goa!

I've used some of your information to create English language articles,
especially on topics where our pasts intersect.

The Translate tool helps one to do a lot (though my knowledge of Pt itself
is highly limited... even if there are 2000 words from Pt adopted by the
Konkani language... unfortunately, Konkani doesn't have its own Translate
tool as yet, though a wikipedia in its preliminary stages had been set up
http://gom.wikipedia.org ). Here is one of my attempts at translating:

[Wikimedia-l] Fwd: Appropriation of the Wikimedia Blog by the WMF

2018-06-09 Thread Frederick Noronha
Dear David,

I'm really sorry to hear this, and feel your pain.

Having been through this in the past, I know (a bit) of how it feels.

I just disagree with your analysis of seeing money as a mere tool. It can
empower us, it can destroy us. Whoever said money is the root of all evil,
knew what s/he was talking about. It can disrupt the best of movements and
also make us selfish.

I hope I'm wrong here.

PS: Regardless of whether it's related or not, I'd like to make a general
observation: burnout over volunteer work can be a real (if unaddressed)
concern for many of us. Why do so many end up feeling so under-appreciated
and taken-for-granted? Are there some tools to cope with this?

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Appropriation of the Wikimedia Blog by the WMF
To: Wikimedia Mailing List

Since Ed Erhart didn't honor my request of posting in this mailing lists to
discuss the plans to appropriate the Wikimedia Blog for the Wikimedia
Foundation [1] (although I would have preferred that he had done it himself
as he is the visible face behind this change, and therefore the burden of
proof is on him to prove to the community that this is the right change), I
am posting to this list with the hope that it can be discussed with people
for whom these things matter.

The Wikimedia Blog [2] has the title "News from Wikipedia and the Wikimedia
movement", and in case you don't know it it is run by the WMF [3]. This
blog has been operating under the existing URL for many years, and I
believe there was a general satisfaction with the way is run, the quality
of the stories, the amount, etc. However, as I mentioned in the Phabricator
ticket [1] I find the idea of moving the blog to the Wikimedia Foundation
site not adequate and not in the spirit of the Wikimedia movement.

I do not find the intention to move the blog to the WMF site to be in the
spirit of the Wikimedia movement because our movement is a diverse field
that is based on the idea of "commons" [4], and I feel that the Wikimedia
Blog is one of those commons. As I see it now the blog sits in the middle
of the community, and although it is run by the WMF, it can be seen as a
shared space between the WMF, the affiliates, and the community. By moving
the blog to the WMF site, the blog would lose its status as a commons and
it would become "the blog of the WMF". I think that if the WMF wants a
blog, they can create a new one, but they should leave the existing blog as
it is, as a shared space.

Intentions like this makes me think that in the WMF there is not enough
"wisdom", that strange quality that I am trying to make important in our
movement without much success [5]. This lack of wisdom is not only present
in the WMF, also in our movement I percieve, if not lack of wisdom, at
least lack of empathy [6]. It saddens me and it makes me stressed.

Issues like this one about the blog make me think that the movement needs
dedicated people that cultivate wisdom and encyclopedic knowledge about the
movement (I might have the former, but not the later), and that we put the
qualities of those people to the service of our community. I feel like a
little kid who wants to play a nice game with his friends, and then he sees
a big bulldozer coming to destroy his playing field. If it is not clear for
you, the "bulldozer" is how I see the "corporate WMF" coming to destroy the
soul of what I love most.

Tracking these kind of "behind the scenes" events takes me too much time. I
feel that I have reached more than the maximum of my capacity as a
"volunteer" (ha, what a joke of a word), and that I would risk losing my
current job if I am caught again participating in the Wikimedia projects
during my work hours, which I do without restrain. Not only that, it also
takes most of my waking time, specially because the movement has grown so
big that I feel overwhelmed in my capacity as metapedian [7]. I also feel
that it has started affecting my mental health. I do not know if I am the
only one, but as it is right now contributing to the Wikimedia projects is
*very* stressful, and since it is my main activity, I don't have time to
wind down, and since I do it as a "volunteer", I do not have free time to
recover. I also fear that if I would not do it myself nobody else would do
it, and if nobody would take their individual responsibility seriously,
then nobody would care for the good things in this world, and if nobody
would take care of the good things in this world, then we better start
saying goodbye to it RIGHT NOW, because the world is a fucking mess and
nobody is standing up to say the things as they are, or as they should be.

I spent 14 years of my life in the Wikimedia projects with various degrees
of involvement, working for free, and receiving compensation [8], and I
must say that the quality of my work has been exactly the same, my

[Wikimedia-l] P. Sainath's comments on the Wikipedia

2018-04-26 Thread Frederick Noronha
In the course of a 2015 talk at Yale, the prominent Indian journalist P.
Sainath says (comparing his People's Archive): "We are not the Wikipedia.
Just because anyone can contribute does not mean we will accept everything.
A lot of democratic decisions are democratically taken by me. Yeah, this is
not the Wikipedia. I did not work for 35 years in journalist to put up any
crap... with my name going on the credit."

This comes up at around minute 49. Please listen. We might need to clarify
this misunderstanding that the Wikipedia accepts "anything".

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Lower page views

2018-01-29 Thread Frederick Noronha
A lot of arbitrary deletions (and Western-centric approaches) seem to have
disincentives some volunteers. At least I can speak for myself.

My conjecture is that if even I feel the Wikipedia, thanks to its many
successes, is increasingly unable to reflect the diversity of our world,
why should readers not feel likewise. And these are your growth areas.
