[Wikimedia-l] Re: 100$ million dollars and still obsolete

2021-10-14 Thread Heather Walls
I was going to write something similar to Jonathan, but now I can just
support what he said.

If there are folks in the communities who desire changes to the sites,
building a group of supporters and/or becoming invested in what it is
really like to make those changes *socially* not technically, is likely to
be more effective than pointing at WMF and saying they are not interested,
not capable, or not resourced enough.

Thanks, Jmo!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Brand Project] Rescheduling Naming Convention Proposal community review

2020-05-06 Thread Heather Walls
Hi all,

I wanted to quickly follow up and thank you for being patient.

Zack, Essie, Samir, Elena, and the entire project team was eager, working
very very hard, and prepared to share the planned Naming Convention
Proposals this week. Our colleagues across the Foundation, particularly in
Legal, were also tightly involved in this project that is both important
and close to our hearts. Rescheduling feels a bit disappointing to us all,
but we are excited at the chance for us to add more to the future review,
and to set up a stronger discussion across our Movement about the limits
and possibilities of new naming systems.

Thanks,
Heather

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Update on Wikimedia site and system outages

2019-09-19 Thread Heather Walls
Hello again,

As a follow-up to my last note on the September 6th DDoS attack, we wanted
to provide you with an update. There have been no further attacks in the
last week and our sites are now running normally. Our SRE team is
continuing to monitor the situation.

Based on what we learned in this attack, our security and engineering teams
are researching and putting together plans for more protection of our
infrastructure to address any potential attacks in the future.

We appreciate everyone’s support, particularly the folks on the SRE team,
in helping to restore access.

Yours,
Heather

[Wikimedia-l] Update on Wikimedia site and system outages

2019-09-07 Thread Heather Walls
Hello everyone,

By now you are likely aware that the Wikimedia sites suffered from a
relatively significant botnet driven DDOS attack on September 6th, taking
them offline in several countries throughout the day. This primarily
affected Wikipedia access in Europe and the Middle East. We posted a short
update of the event on our website.[1]

I would like to thank everyone who stepped up to support the restoration of
our projects, including the fast reporting of community members throughout
the world and our security and engineering teams who worked long hours to
address many complex issues surrounding the attack and our response—the
Site Reliability Engineering team in particular.

The Wikimedia Foundation leadership team is proud to work with such
talented and dedicated staff and supporters.

Yours,
Heather

1.
https://wikimediafoundation.org/news/2019/09/07/malicious-attack-on-wikipedia-what-we-know-and-what-were-doing/

"Today, Wikipedia was hit with a malicious attack that has taken it offline
in several countries for intermittent periods. The attack is ongoing and
our Site Reliability Engineering team is working hard to stop it and
restore access to the site.

As one of the world’s most popular sites, Wikipedia sometimes attracts “bad
faith” actors. Along with the rest of the web, we operate in an
increasingly sophisticated and complex environment where threats are
continuously evolving. Because of this, the Wikimedia communities and
Wikimedia Foundation have created dedicated systems and staff to regularly
monitor and address risks. If a problem occurs, we learn, we improve, and
we prepare to be better for next time.

We condemn these sorts of attacks. They’re not just about taking Wikipedia
offline. Takedown attacks threaten everyone’s fundamental rights to freely
access and share information. We in the Wikimedia movement and Foundation
are committed to protecting these rights for everyone.

Right now, we’re continuing to work to restore access wherever you might be
reading Wikipedia in the world. We’ll keep you posted."

[Wikimedia-l] 15 years! Help us add what's missing

2015-11-12 Thread Heather Walls
Dear everyone,

Help us collect the 15 best things about the Wikimedia movement (and
Wikipedia) from the last 15 years!

Community members all over the world and the Communications team, have been
preparing to celebrate the start of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement.
On January 15, 2016, it will have been 15 years of collaborating,
collecting, verifying, and making knowledge free for the whole world.

As part of our annual report, we plan to once again share stories -- this
time celebrating the joy of knowledge and discovery. We want to include
some of the most amazing, strange, cool, and unbelievable things about the
last 15 years.

There is a page started on Meta.[1] We know they balance to enWP right now,
so we are especially appreciative of additions about the rest of the
movement. Please add things we've missed, make corrections to anything
that's not correct, and commenting on your favorite.

Thanks so much for taking the time to improve this!

The WMF Communications team

[Wikimedia-l] Annual Report from the Wikimedia Foundation

2015-01-28 Thread Heather Walls
Dear everyone!

I’m happy to share with you the Annual Report from the Wikimedia Foundation
for 2014 -- Knowledge is a foundation https://annual.wikimedia.org.[1] We
published last Wednesday, but I'm just catching up enough to send the
email. (Pardon me.)

This year, we are telling the story of Wikimedia in the context of free
knowledge, and releasing it as web version (wiki, too!) so that we can
share that story with even more people.

Knowledge is a foundation. It is a foundation for human potential, a
foundation for freedom, a foundation for opportunity. Our mutual project,
Wikipedia, is part of the global support structure for free knowledge.

Most importantly, people are the foundation of Wikipedia. We are inspired
by thousands of contributors who support the projects, and are excited to
share a little bit about Dr. Netha Hussain, Jacek Halicki, Dumisani
Ndubane, Dr. Adrianne Wadewitz, Ihor Kostenko, Dorothy Howard, Ram Prasad
Joshi, and Jake Orlowitz.

Thank you for the myriad of contributions you make, from coding to writing,
editing to programs, and uploads to donations.

We've written a blog post about the process we went through this year, and
how we settled on the concept of 'knowledge as a foundation.'[2]

You can participate in the wiki version of the report here, and soon help
with translations [3]

Thank you very very much,

Heather the Wikimedia Foundation Communications team

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikipedian-In-Residence at NIOSH

Congratulations Emily! That sounds amazing.

 Dear Wikimedia Community,

I am excited to announce that I am starting today as the
Wikipedian-in-Residence for NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health, a subsidiary of the CDC. NIOSH is a research institution
dedicated to the prevention of illness and injury related to work, and they
have a wealth of information just begging to be used by Wikimedia. Our
missions are very much aligned, especially with WikiProject Medicine, and
have the potential to create a huge impact worldwide.

As Wikipedian-in-Residence, I will be helping to connect NIOSH and the
WIkimedia communities, creating a WikiProject NIOSH, and helping to
organize content on occupational health and use NIOSH's public domain
resources to improve Wikimedia. I will not, in the foreseeable future, be
editing anything about NIOSH itself or any of its scientists. Nevertheless,
for full disclosure, I'll be placing a comprehensive COI notice on my user
page and keeping a separate account (as many other WIR's do) at
[[User:Emily Temple-Wood (NIOSH)]] on any project I'm working on.

I'm very excited to work on this project and am always happy to accept
feedback. You can read more about NIOSH at

and see my personal userpage at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Keilana

 All the best,
 Emily Temple-Wood
