[Wikimedia-l] Re: We need more interactive content: we are doing it wrong

2024-01-29 Thread Ivan Martínez
It is not difficult to do something that is already happening. By referring
to encyclopedic videos I am talking about multimedia that can enrich
existing content. I understand your point, it's a bit like what happened
with the project of reading recorded Wikipedia articles that after years
seem obsolete.

What I am referring to is all that multimedia material that is visual, that
can be made into video to complement articles. The process you mention is
complicated, but not impossible, in fact, there are many of us editors who
have all those skills already implemented in the projects.

2024-01-25 Thread Ivan Martínez
And with this thread, we had an example of exactly what tends to happen to
novices, to new contributors, to interested people who are used to other
simpler interfaces. Faced with raising a problem like the one Galder
exposed, and having as an answer the technicalities and the tortuous path
of having to go through 10 steps to place a video that is aligned with the
Commons mission.

I love the *different* way of our free and openly developed community
tools, except that Strategy 2030 was clear that the way was in the opposite
direction

By not having a Youtube 2.0 we are avoiding a Wikipedia 2.0 with pure

2024-01-23 Thread Ivan Martínez
Hi Galder, I certainly share your sentiment. The world is undoubtedly
moving at such a speed that other sites have invested millions to make the
experience better. But ours has millions as well, and those of us who edit
on a day-to-day basis still have the worst internet experience when it
comes for an example to editing and uploading photos. Not to mention the
long and tortuous road to video uploading (Commons has no decent support
for this ), in the midst
of the biggest generational shift in video consumption.

There is a phrase in my country that if civil servants were on public
transport, we would probably have faster improvements. Will it be the same
for us, if we do not have staff who do not face our daily "challenges"?

I don't know.

[Wikimedia-l] Leadership Development Working Group is ready for community feedback!

2022-09-16 Thread Ivan Martínez
TL;DR: The draft leadership definition[1] prepared by the Leadership
Development Working Group is ready for community feedback! Please share
your feedback on Meta[2], the feedback form[3] or the Movement Strategy
Forum[4]. You can also directly mail us at
leadershipworkinggr...@wikimedia.org. The feedback will be collected till
October 6, 2022.

Hello everyone!

I hope you are aware that the Leadership Development Working Group[5] has
been working over the past few months to formulate and find ways to nurture
the leadership of our movement. The Leadership Development Working Group
(LDWG) is a group of Wikimedia volunteers representing different
communities, languages, roles, and experiences. We are pleased to inform
the community that our draft definition of leadership is now available for
community feedback. This first draft definition of leadership was written
after months of discussion, learning, and sharing from our community
perspective. The Wikimedia Movement, which is by nature diverse and
distinctive in its own way, is expressly addressed by this definition.

Please consider going through the definition and letting us know what you
think by October 6, 2022. The draft definition includes a general
definition of leadership and subcategories that elaborate on the actions,
qualities, and outcomes of good leadership.

There are many places where you can express your ideas, suggestions, and
comments, such as the meta talk page[2], the feedback form[3], and Movement
Strategy Forum Post[4]. You can also directly mail us at
leadershipworkinggr...@wikimedia.org.

You can check if the general definition, and the subcategories align with
your idea of leadership in the movement. You can also try finding the gaps,
maybe some qualities of a leader or anything else are missing in the draft
definition or you can check if the definition applies to all cultural,
linguistic, community or other contexts of the movement and share your
thoughts with us.

Together, let's celebrate the movement's diverse and distinctive
leadership!

Cheers!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wmfall] Sharing sad news about Bassel

2017-08-02 Thread Ivan Martínez
Dear all. Sad and terrible news for the movement.

Just want to be sure about if Wikimedia Foundation and/or Jimmy Wales
Foundation have proofs of Bassel's death. Some international conventions
about forced disappearance have protocols to talk in public and confirm
this terrible cases. One of that protocols is talk about "forced
disappeared" victims until families have a scientific confirmation from an
official source. In many cases around the world governments or other
persons use rumors to undermine morale of the families of the victims and
organizations around them or force to the victim to be abandoned.

While we don't have that kind of confirmation for respect we must insist to
refer our colleague as "dissapeared".

support us with a hasthag? I posted #WikipediaSansürlendi but maybe is
incorrect.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Politics

2017-02-03 Thread Ivan Martínez
I may write this biased message from my place of enunciation: a country
that has been threatened for several days directly by the decisions of the
President of the United States.

Only if you were a follower of Trump would you see unnecessary a proactive
defense of potential damage to people both from our community and the
Foundation staff. Personally, reading a statement from Katherine Maher let
me know that in front of threats, people in your movement will react. Let's
not be deluded, Trump's decision-making route over the past few weeks
(outside privacy, airport reviews) will sooner or later lead to a threat to
the Wikimedia Foundation. And we must be prepared.

And please, let's leave the false dilemma that as a Wikimedia movement we
should not take political positions because of Wikipedia neutrality. They
are different things clearly.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Free Basics

2015-12-30 Thread Ivan Martínez
In Mexico Virgin Mobile is offering since December 11 this service and of
course Wikipedia is announced as a part of the offer. With an intentional
way, in my opinion, because although our free licenses that allow reuse of
the Wikipedia contents, communication of this criticized service seems to
be an alliance that take advantage of the moral quality of Wikipedia to
attract confidence.

There are few voices[1] that point how Free Basics is an enemy of freedom
of internet as Electronic Frontier Foundation [2], Mexican NGO Red en
Defensa de los Derechos Digitales [3], Chilean NGO Derechos Digitales [4]
among others.

Will be nice if we can start the discussion as community and movement and
take action. I don't know if WMF have something in plans about Free Basics.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Commons-l] TPP - copyright

2015-11-07 Thread Ivan Martínez
Hi, there's a lot of review and analyze about TPP because not only in the
States we will have potential strong legal modifications. In Wikimedia
Mexico we are aware since one year ago at least following the analysis of
other NGOs devoted to internet freedom and copyright which can be a
potential risk to Wikimedia mission.

The main issue in the next days is that the extension of the revealed text
needs to have much analysis to have clear points that can be potential
risks to our mission.

Thanks,

Hi everyone, the featured speakers videos are up now, both on Commons and
Youtube. We have two versions of each speaker, the original audio and the
simultaneous translation English or Spanish according to the case.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2015_presentation_videos

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxdLXCagb6RAiK9w2y0DsDUzWF7dgj7j-

Our volunteers will work in the next months in the closed caption of each
talk. Will be very nice if we can have many translations many languages as
possible.

We have pending only the publication of the Wikimania 15 documentary, that
will be premiered soon at National Film Archive of Mexico (Cineteca
Nacional) and TV UNAM, public digital TV with national reach, and then
shared by all our channels. Stay tuned!

Thanks again for the great moments we lived in Mexico City.

Cheers,

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Announcement: WMF to file suit against the NSA

2015-03-10 Thread Ivan Martínez
That's great!
Pending for translation.

2015-03-10 10:21 GMT-06:00 Pete Forsyth petefors...@gmail.com:

There's a relevant research project outlined on Meta, about HTTPS:

 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikimedia_referrer_policy

 Here's the nutshell description:

Since we started switching to HTTPS and an increasing portion of inbound
traffic happens over SSL, Wikimedia sites stopped advertising themselves as
sources of referred traffic to external sites. While this is a literal
implication of HTTPS, it means that Wikimedia's impact on traffic directed
to other sites is becoming largely invisible: *is Wikimedia turning into a
large source of dark traffic?* I review a use case (traffic directed to
CrossRef) and discuss how other top web properties deal with this issue by
 adopting a so-called Referrer Policy.

I don't know anything about this beyond what I've read on Meta, but I think
it offers some useful background for this discussion.

running with our tail between our legs?

(For non-technical readers: the HTTP protocol is the normal way to send
around information on the web. HTTPS is the secure way of sending said
information, adding encryption among other things, to avoid
  eavesdropping.)

HTTP traffic can easily be tracked by people sharing the same network,
 by
your Internet service provider and so on. If one cares about privacy,
  HTTPS
is always important. It's worth noting that the NSA is not the only
government agency in the world. I'd be even more worried about a number
  of
countries where there would be little chance to fight the intruding
 party
   in the courtroom.

Side note: you could probably track most HTTPS traffic to Wikipedia as
well, even if you're not the NSA. Normally you would see that the user
  has
accessed Wikipedia, but not which article. A way around that would be
 to
let a spider (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler) track the
 byte
size of Wikipedia articles, which should be individual enough as soon
 as
images are involved and compare it to the size of the page the user
 just
accessed. If two articles happen to be of exactly the same size,
 compare
with incoming and outgoing wiki links and see if the user accessed any
  page
linking to or linked from one the articles to determine which one. But
 it
would at least take some sort of effort, and wouldn't be perfect.

This report is a work in progress, you are welcome to translate but there

It is perfectly reasonable that the WMF should publish the master edition
first and then translations come soon afterwards... In the past there have
sometimes been small errors that the community has discovered in the
original that, because translations were launched simultaneously (and in
hardcopy too), they were not as easy to correct across multiple versions.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraising campaign update

2014-12-15 Thread Ivan Martínez
What a wonderful news, Megan!
We will sharing with our social media channels this inspiring quotes.

2014-12-15 18:25 GMT-06:00 Megan Hernandez mhernan...@wikimedia.org:

 Hi everyone,

We are two weeks into the English fundraising campaign. We've had
incredible support from our community of readers these past two weeks and
we are thankful to everyone who has contributed so far.

We have raised roughly $18 million from 1.6 million readers since we
launched the campaign on December 2nd. This number is preliminary as
donations are still coming in and settling in our accounts. The team is on
track to reach the $20 million campaign goal this month.

Banners have been showing to all readers these past two weeks. At this
point, we are starting to limit the number of banners each reader sees. We
will run the campaign at a higher traffic level again at the end of
December for a final year-end push.

Thank you again for your support. I also want to thank everyone on the
fundraising team as well as staff and community members who have worked on
the campaign. We work incredibly hard throughout the entire year, but
there has been exceptional effort the last month. Thank you.

One of my favorite parts about the campaign is reading the notes from our
readers. Please take a moment to read through some of these comments. And
thank you for making Wikipedia a treasured resource that people are happy
 to support :)

 Quotes from Wikipedia readers:

--I consider Wikipedia one of the few (the only?) big internet company who
are actually trustworthy. I value Wikipedia and I want to support it

--Wikipedia is too valuable to be taken for granted. Donating is for me an
act of fairness, responsibility, and gratitude.

--I read a comic about a Wikipedia-Comcast merger. It was terrifying.

--Keep doing what you are doing. I love Wikipedia. My most visited site by
a mile. Any time I watch a new documentary, nature show, or read a book
about a topic I find fascinating, I always Wikipedia the information.
 Irreplaceable!

--It's so convenient to pop onto the computer (Wikipedia) and find out
almost anything I want to know. Sure beats the old encyclopedias I grew up
with. It's helpful with medical advice and also, at my age, when you can't
think of a name of somebody famous, etc. It makes life easier to find out
RIGHT NOW instead of waiting for your brain to compute the answer 3 days
 later.

--Very helpful! As a nursing student I frequently use Wikipedia to
reference science and engineering topics so I can get a deeper
understanding concepts and extra learning. Ilove it. As a young child in
the early 1960s I thought that computers were going to be giant machines
you could ask any question and get answers, Wikipedia is that machine! It's
 wonderful! Just sharing.

--It's 10pm and I have to write a history essay. I'd love to sit and tell
you about all the times Wikipedia saved my ass by giving me quick start
points on projects. I simply love Wikipedia, keep it up guys! :)

--It can finish a debate in a couple of clicks

--Reduces intellectual irritation: Whenever, I encounter a word I don't
know or am fuzzy about, I look it up on Wiki; whenever I need facts to
resolve a political, religious, scientific or technical question, Wiki is
 there.

--Once upon a time far far away I wanted a set of encyclopedias, but, alas
I could not afford them. Wikipedia now fills that void.

--I visit and utilize Wikipedia multiple times every week, sometimes daily.
Going to Wikipedia has become second nature to me. It is synonymous with
knowledge - there's nothing more profound. I support it with the small
donations I can afford in the hope of setting an example, and so that
others may have the same opportunities I've had.

--There have been so many ways that the internet has disappointed me in my
hopes that it would improve the human condition. However, there is this one
shining exception, and from my least expected source. Wikipedia is that
best thing that humanity has done with the internet, contributing to both a
common knowledge set and re-learning how to find areas of agreement with
others, instead of just shouting and not listening.

--i use Wikipedia for 'fact checking naming space ships, realizing that
it still a secondary source... but trust the communal effort to gravitate
towards a mostly accurate centerpoint. The Encyclopedia Galactica of
 Trantor in the making..

--You've killed the bar-gument but that's okay, I'd prefer to be informed
rather than simply louder than the next guy. ;)

--Most often I turn to Wiki in order to answer a question that my grandson
has asked about life, the universe and everything...in the old days we had
a kids' encyclopedia on the bookshelf, but it became outdated and Wiki has
 taken its place.

--I frequently look things up while watching TV or movies. For example,

the Mati Wiki pilot project (

which is going on right now. The project has my campus collaborating with

located, with Tec providing technical and other support.

So videos can have an impact!

[Wikimedia-l] Mexico facts about Wikipedia

2014-08-14 Thread Ivan Martínez
Hi folks,

For any interested, today appear in the blog Codigo Espagueti[1] a survey
about the trust in Wikipedia and the use both in Mexico and the United
States. Some facts:

   - 60% of people with internet access in Mexico has heard about Wikipedia.
   - 82% are very or somewhat confident. In contrast, only 16% have little
   or no credibility.
   - In Mexico 59% use this site to learn about different topics and 53% in
   USA.

The blog post does not indicate the method of the survey, but is a
interesting exercise.

Cheers.

The Roaring Lion competition is an award for excellence within Israel's
communications and public relations industry awarded by the Israel Public
Relations Associations. The campaign was chosen among many, judged by a
committee of public relations executives, academics and public figures.

Last July the Hebrew Wikipedia celebrated her 10th anniversary. The
celebrations were followed by massive press coverage - TV radio, internet
and print. You can give a look on some of them in our Press Book:

 https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9iobJg3Vpp0bDdKaDExNmU2VEU/edit?usp=sharing

The strategy was to show the volunteers – the people behind the projects,
so each cover presented another volunteer. To show the power of Wikipedia
we collected a lot of numbers such the most viewed articles of the last 5
years, numbers of edits, words and many others – which leads to many
 items
  covering the history of HEWP.

But besides arranging massive coverage for the celebrations we were
looking for a special way to celebrate – to do something that has never
been done before. The result was a unique collaboration with TV Channel
 2,
the most viewed channel in Israel! For an entire week, five of the most
senior Channel 2 reporters, who learned to edit Wikipedia by our
volunteers, wrote or extended an article on Hebrew Wikipedia. Then, each
recorded a one minute video, explaining why they have decided to write on
this specific topic. Every day, just before the evening news broadcast,
 the
video was broadcasted and while the anchor presented the project, he
explained we wanted to celebrate Wikipedia’s 10th anniversary and show
that everyone can write an article on Wikipedia. Happy Birthday
 Wikipedia!”

Due the success of the project Channel 2 decided to broadcast it all over
again on the week after. According to the ratings records 2.033 million
people (cumulatively) watched the project. On the celebrations month
 pages
views on Hebrew Wikipedia showed increase of 12% (compare to 1%
internationally) and increase of 12% in new articles (compare to 14%
  internationally decrease).

You can watch them the videos (translated to English) on our Youtube
  Channel:
  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuQcXKjU3rwJ-TOL8lyru7oHvoufnWtED

I wish to thank all the volunteers who take part making this happen, to
the Wikimedia Israel team, and to Gidoen Amichay who supported and helped
  lead the Channel 2 cooperation.

 Dear fellow community members,

On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees I am delighted to
announce that the new Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation will
be Lila Tretikov. Lila is a widely respected Bay Area technology leader,
 most recently with SugarCRM.

As many of you know, about a year ago Sue Gardner announced she planned
to step down as our ED. As we launched the search for her successor, we
spent some time working through the most critical requirements for the
role. We decided the new ED should be someone with a product/engineering
background, ideally in an open-source or other online community context. We
wanted someone experienced with organisations that were growing, who'd
managed staff and budgets comparable to ours, and who had experience
creating continuous delivery of technology improvements in an agile
context. We wanted a person who is oriented towards collaboration,
transparency and openness, with some experience with complex stakeholder
environments, and with an international orientation. We knew we needed
someone with courage and strong personal integrity, who wouldn't be
intimidated by attempts to censor the projects.

Lila is precisely what we set out to find.

Lila was born in the Soviet Union and moved to the United States alone,
as a teenager. She's been working for technology companies, primarily in
open source, in the Bay Area for the past 15 years. In 1999 she started her
career at Sun Microsystems. Shortly afterwards she founded GrokDigital, a
technology and design company. She spent three years as senior director of
development at Telespree, a company that provides cloud-based wireless data
services for mobile carriers. For the past eight years, she was at
SugarCRM, where she held positions of increasing responsibility as the
organization grew, including being in charge of internal IT, marketing,
customer support and professional services, engineering, and product
development. She has a stellar reputation as a leader who is highly
skilled, collaborative, open, passionate and curious.

We think Lila will be a terrific fit for the ED role. The Transition Team
(Phoebe, Alice, Kat, Sue, Erik, Geoff, Gayle and I) voted unanimously to
recommend her to the Board, and the Board voted unanimously to accept the
recommendation. She strikes all of us as smart, brave and unpretentious,
and we believe she has the skills the WMF needs.

Lila is going to spend the next few weeks in learning-and-listening mode,
and will take over the ED position from Sue at the end of the month. Her
first priority will be to immerse herself in deepening her understanding of
 the Wikimedia projects.

I want to close this announcement by saying a heartfelt and deeply
appreciative thanks to Sue, who has been the Executive Director of the
Wikimedia Foundation for the past seven years. When the Board and I hired
Sue in 2007, we were just a chaotic little non-profit in small-town
Florida, with a tiny staff and not much money. Over the past seven years,
Sue's leadership has built the Foundation into an effective, well-funded
and well-managed organisation, with integrity and a clear sense of purpose,
and her steady and committed presence throughout the search process was
integral in helping us come to this excellent result. We will be forever
grateful for her leadership and vision, and I hope we can continue to rely
on her support in the months and years ahead.

In June Sue will move into a new role as a special advisor to me and
Lila. She'll also take a well-earned holiday, and maybe even a bit of a
wiki-break, before beginning to think about what she's going to do next.
Many of us will get a chance to see her in London, at Wikimania, in August.

The Wikimedia Foundation is delighted to have reached such a successful
outcome to the search. My thanks to Lisa Grossman of m/Oppenheim for
helping us with it, and I ask you to please join me in extending a warm
welcome to Lila Tretikov, our new ED.

ct-cooper.wikimedia...@hotmail.co.uk:

I find it difficult to believe it would be that bad. Yes, it might causes
some issues if it turned out that a bid won because it was the least
 worst
and was actually still very unpopular with the jury. However, I think
 people
understand that no bid is ever perfect and wouldn't expect every jury
decision on who hosts Wikimania to be unanimous.

At the very least there should be a written explanation on what the
strengths of the winning bid were, and what the problems of those that
didn't were. This has been done in past years and would help prevent
mistakes being repeated. Also, since Wikimania is a public conference, I
think those that attend it and support it deserve to know why and how it
gets to be hosted in a particular place.

As someone who has followed the bidding process over multiple years, I
 think
it is fair to say that communication between the jury and the community
during the bidding process has not been as good this year as in previous
years. I believe improving this should be a priority for the next round of
bidding for 2016. As a member of the Scholarship Committee, I note that the
scholarships process was in the past criticized for just the same issue and
that has now been rectified, and from my perspective doing so has improved
 community confidence in the process.

 No, Aya, I don't think there will be a public report - I don't think it's
 happened in previous years.

I for one would not be happy with making my marking grid public because the
bidders didn't know that the marking grids were going to be made public -
and for that matter, neither did I! I am also a little worried about being
second-guessed by the community at large. Imagine, *for example,* if the
jury was split down the middle, with half hating the Mexico bid and half
loving it: it could be very damaging for the volunteer team morale to show
that not everyone supported them, and it might damage the conference.
Perhaps in future it would be a good thing to do...

However, I see where you're coming from - it would be good to have feedback
on the individual bids for posterity's sake, and to make sure that mistakes
or omissions aren't repeated in future...

[Wikimedia-l] Letter of support from WM-MX board to Patricio Lorente 2014 candidacy

2014-04-11 Thread Ivan Martínez
Dear members of the Wikimedia movement:

Wikimedia México supports Patricio Lorente's candidacy to a second term as
a member of the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation. We believe
that Patricio's role as a trustee has been active and truly representative
of our chapter's vision on Wikimedia's governance.

He has also been a relevant actor within the movement towards the
generation of a perspective from Spanish-speaking chapters. Wikimedia
México has had in Patricio a confident conversation partner about our
worries on the Wikimedia movement.

In our view, a movement with global reach should be represented by people
with a free, open, fair and equitable view. Those qualities are present in
Patricio.

We are pleased to have the kind of support he provides us: he is always
ready to collaborate, to advise us on how he believes we can enhance our
role within Wikimedia and, since many years ago, to encourage us to be bold
in our performance as a chapter. It is no accident that over the last years
the Spanish-speaking environment has acquired more relevance within the
Wikimedia movement, what is also worth mentioning.

However, Patricio mustn't be seen as an exclusively Latin option, because
his performance accounts to the basic philosophy of all members of the
Wikimedia movement, and is based on principles that we all recognize as
ours: collaboration, solidarity and good faith. Patricio's presence in the
Board of Trustees reminds the movement, in a constant way, the principles
over it is founded.

Patricio has always been a friend ready to help, kind and dedicated to the
Wikimedia mission in a transparent and legitimate way. That is something
that should permeate all and every one of us who integrates this movement.
Sincerely,

The Board of Wikimedia Mexico: Iván Martínez, Gustavo Sandoval Kingwergs,
Carmen Alcázar, Salvador Alcántar, Alan Lazalde, José Flores.

You can read the letter here:

Hey folks,

I'm pleased to announce we've hired a Chief Communications Officer
 for
   the
Wikimedia Foundation, replacing Jay Walsh who left us in October. Our
  new
head of communications will be Katherine Maher, and she will join us
 on
   14
April, reporting to me.

Katherine comes to the WMF from Washington DC, where she was Advocacy
Director for the global digital rights organization Access. At
 Access,
   she
was responsible for all media and communications work, including
communications between the organization and its 350,000 members. She
  also
handled coalition work and advocacy efforts and urgent global threats
  to
digital rights, participated in the organization's strategic
 planning,
   and
was deeply involved with the production of RightsCon.

Before Access, Katherine worked on the launch of the Open Development
Technology Alliance at the World Bank, and was a program manager for
internet freedom projects at the National Democratic Institute.
  Earlier,
she worked on the UniWiki initiative for the UNICEF Innovation team,
intended to improve MediaWiki's usability for people who were new to
computer use, using early-model technology, or connecting in
   low-bandwidth
environments. Through her career she's been a frequent media
  spokesperson
and writer of op-eds and other media materials.

Katherine has lived and worked in nine countries and visited many
 more.
   She
is a native speaker of English, and has a basic knowledge of French,
   Arabic
and German.

The purpose of the CCO role is to ensure fast, easy information flow
   about
Wikimedia in multiple languages, both internally within the movement
  and
outside of it, and I think Katherine will be a wonderful fit for that
   work.
Her experiences advocating for the rights of ordinary internet users
  and
communicating with a large global volunteer community are both rare
 and
directly relevant. She's got a solid understanding of internet
technologies. She's a crisp, clear communicator, and an experienced
spokesperson.

I want to thank the people who helped with the interviewing process:
   Geoff
Brigham, Jove Oliver, Gayle Karen Young, David Gerard, Erik Moeller,
  Lisa
Gruwell, Frank Schulenburg, and Jimmy Wales. A special thanks to
 Geoff,
who's ably overseen our communications functions for the past several
years, and to Jay, who's generously filled in when it took us longer
  than
we expected to hire for this role. Geoff and Jay will be helping
   Katherine
get on-boarded, and I know she'll benefit enormously from their
  guidance
and support.

Please join me in welcoming Katherine, who's on CC.

Thanks,
Sue

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Announcing Anna Torres Adell as new Wikimedia Argentina ED

2014-02-21 Thread Ivan Martínez
Welcome, Anna.
We will very pleased in work together, as Mexico and Argentina are working
since three years.

Best regards.

2014-02-21 15:49 GMT-06:00 Galileo Vidoni gali...@gmail.com:

 Dear movement fellows,

I'm pleased to announce that Wikimedia Argentina has a new Executive
Director. Please welcome Anna Torres Adell to our movement!

Anna was born in Barcelona but settled in Buenos Aires a couple of years
ago. She is a licentiate in Political Science for the Universitat Pompeu
 Fabra and has post-graduate studies in International Cooperation;
Management and Control of Public Policies; and Local Development and the
 Social Economy.

She developed an interest on international cooperation and social matters
since her teens, helping establish an educational NGO in Guatemala when she
was just over 20. She has since lived and worked in Spain, México,
Guatemala and Argentina. Before joining us at Wikimedia Argentina, Anna was
the ED of PROEM Foundation, an organization aimed at coaching small
businesses. Anna's track record also includes working with AECID, the
Spanish agency for international cooperation, and the United Nations
 Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).

She has extensive knowledge and experience in the five dimensions that we
cared the most when recruiting: commitment with the social goal of free
knowledge, working with volunteers, administration, program management and
 funding.

Selecting Anna was not easy, but not because we couldn't find the right
person: We had just too much good EDs we wanted to hire! Thankfully we
could choose from an important pool of candidates and proceed to evaluate
thoroughly each one of them. We received over 100 applications, of which
not less than half were pertinent. We gave all of them a score and made
successive filtering stages before arriving to the eight people we
interviewed in person over the last days.

As you may have read on this list back in January, our decision to hire a
new ED has to do with Osmar leaving us to return to his home country. Let
me highlight that this good news could not have been possible without
Osmar's work and commitment. Not only he helped designing the work
description for his replacement, but he also participated in the recruiting
 and hiring process.

We are extremely grateful to all what he has done to advance our mission in
Wikimedia Argentina, and while we are certainly saddened to see him go we
know that both he and us are doing everything possible to leave the
organization on track and in good hands. Programmatic work will not suffer
from this leadership change; if any, we as Board will ensure it gets
 reinforced.

Anna will formally start working with us on March 1, and throughout all of
that month Osmar will continue with us in Benedict fashion as ED emeritus
to ensure that all the necessary knowledge, proceedings and contacts are
transferred from one administration to another. We are glad to have
achieved this level of stability as an organization, and we'd love to
spread the word about this happy and smooth transition in the
WikimediaConference with whoever wants to hear us :).

We asked Osmar to be one of our representatives in Berlin as his last act
of service, so it will also be a nice opportunity for you to meet him. In
the meantime, please welcome Anna to the Wikimedia movement and to this
 mailing list!

 Best regards,

Thanks to all the team involved in the bidding and decision. We will have a
very nice conference in Berlin.

 Dear all,

Following considerable deliberation it is with great pleasure that we
announce that the Location Committee has selected Berlin as the location
 for the 2014 Wikimedia Conference.

We received a total of four bids from Germany, India, Italy and Sweden. In
selecting the Berlin location we have taken into consideration the
experience and capacity of the team; the travel time and cost for
attendees; the cost of hosting the conference; and the facilities and room
 configuration of the proposed venues.

Throughout our deliberations we kept an open mind towards having the
conference in a new location/country, and we have appreciated the compact
solutions offered by having all participants close to each other or staying
at the same lodging; however, we felt that the Berlin bid provides – by a
small margin – the best combination of price, distance and experience this
 year.

We thank all the organisations that have entered a bid for their time and
effort and we hope that even if they were not selected this year, they can
make use of the experience when they organise other meetings that will
 further the Wikimedia mission.

In closing, we would like to thank all Wikimedia organisations for placing
their trust in this process and committee, which was an interesting
experience for all of us. In the hope that the Wikimedia organisations keep
the hosting choice an open process, we would like to propose a number of
potential process improvements[1], and we would invite all the bidders and
other interested parties to provide their own feedback.

anything until they're quite sure the community is moving in that
 direction, for probably-sensible reasons.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wiki goes to radio: Möebius at Ibero 90.9

2013-06-02 Thread Ivan Martínez
Thanks to all for your kindly comments.

Daniel: The broadcast production considers songs and sounds with copyright,
but I think we can upload a CC version without restrictive sounds to
Wikimedia Commons. This is our first big project with the GLAM partnering
and sounds fine the collaboration in Wikipedia recorded articles. We have
already talked with them about donating content, and is pending by these
copyright details. We hope to have good news soon.

Samuel: we will document all the programs, and put this connections on
line. For an example, the first successfull draft of the program was made
with the articles Isaac Asimov = Encyclopedia Galáctica = The Hitchikers
Guide's to the Galaxy = Marvin, the Paranoid Android = Ok, Computer =
Paranoid Android = Radiohead

Regards.

2013/5/31 Daniel Mietchen daniel.mietc...@googlemail.com

 Hi Iván,

that's an interesting concept - looking forward to listening to the
 recordings.

Do you envision that collaboration to broaden a bit over time? For
instance, there does not seem to be any mention of Creative Commons on
their site, or their trained voices might help in getting some more
Wikipedia articles spoken in Spanish, or they might have a sound
archive (or contacts to one), which could then be asked about
 releasing materials under Wikimedia-compatible licenses.

 Cheers,

 Daniel

   Dear all,

I am happy to inform you that the Affiliations Committee has approved
 the
recognition of a Wikimedia User Group today: Wikimedians of Nepal.

Please join me in welcoming this new group into the fold of Wikimedia
entities, and let's celebrate their success and hard work as Wikipedia
   turns eleven in Nepal!

   == Wikimedians of Nepal ==

   Wikimedians of Nepal http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Nepal
  is a
group of enthusiastic Nepali Wikimedians working towards developing and
promoting Wikimedia projects in Nepal. They've been actively working to
help expand the community, launch projects in more languages of Nepal
 and
promote and support the existing ones.

The group is working towards chapterhood, and have a good chance of
attaining that status this year. Granting them user group recognition
allows the movement to express its appreciation for their hard work
 even
while they are working on the bureaucratic aspects of meeting the
requirements of chapterhood. The timing is fortuitous in that the
 group
  is
going to mark the 11th anniversary of Wikipedia in a Nepali language
 on 3
   June, next Monday.

Ganesh, the group's interim president has been invited to this year's
  Milan
conference, where he gave a comprehensive overview of the group's
  history,
its projects (including a successful 'wikiwomen programme) and its
   ambitions. The slides are at:

 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/45/WMNepal_WMC_2013.pdf

   The Affiliations Committee's
   recognition

 http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliations_Committee/Resolutions/Wikimedians_of_Nepal_-_May_2013
   is
valid until 28 May 2014, or until they are recognized as a chapter.

   == Wikimedia User Groups ==

Wikimedia User Groups are one of the three new types of affiliations
created last year to empower volunteers wanting to conduct offline work
  and
provide them recognition from the Wikimedia movement.

User group status is meant to be an easy form of affiliation, where the
main requirements are an agreed goal, plans for offline work, at least
three people participating and a public wiki page with all the relevant
   information).

   Under the movement roles
   recommendations

 http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_affiliation_models/User_Groups
, user groups are to be recognized in a quick and easy process directly
  by
the Affiliations Committee, for a fixed, renewable time-period and they
  are
to enjoy limited trademark use and simplified access to grants.

   Best regards,
   Bence Damokos

This is very cool. It might be a good idea, if you haven't already, to
ping folks on the talk pages of the following English WikiProject:

Hope that helps a bit, that's often what I do when digging up support or
help for a project - and even pinging the most active members directly on
their talk pages. Might also be worth to leave a comment on the WWF
 Wikipedia talk page.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Grant Advisory Committee Expanded

  Hello, everyone.

I'm pleased to announce that we have significantly expanded the Grant
Advisory Committee (GAC)[1] as of today, and it now numbers 30
 volunteers,
following an open process and public calls for volunteers. The updated
list of members is here[2]. With this expansion, we hope to achieve a
higher degree of community participation in the Foundation's evaluation
 of
grant proposals for its Wikimedia Grants program[3], as well as more
diverse feedback and advice for grant applicants on how to refine their
  proposals for best impact.

The GAC was set up almost exactly one year ago, and has been quietly
 doing
what is frankly a thankless job. I applaud and thank the volunteers who
have done this work so far, and look forward to easing their load a
 little
now that the GAC is larger, considering an expected rise in the number of
grant proposals they would be called upon to review.

Welcome to the new volunteers, and may we all have much success in
fostering innovation and impactful mission-aligned activities through the
  grants program.
