Re: [Wikimedia-l] Internet.org and Wikipedia Zero ?

Emmanuel,

I have my concerns as well so we're watching how things unfold for now.
Perhaps to add to Teemu's question (If I could be so bold) how would
internet.org need to evolve to make it worth our time and effort to be
involved?

 the Internet.

So, IMO, this whole story about internet.org stinks.

Microsoft with other partners has also been working on bringing broadband
to Kenya (and ultimately other African countries) via white spaces:

However, every party has their own agenda so hopefully competition lowers

get people internet access (esp those that really need it) is what we need

[Wikimedia-l] Fwd: Urgent: invitation to give a talk in workshop aiming at definition of a web environment for the EU marine scientific community - Bremen - 21-23 May 2013

2013-04-15 Thread Kul Wadhwa
In case anybody is interested in giving a talk and participating in a
workshop for the
European Marine scientific community. Probably most relevant for somebody
based in the EU.

--Kul

-

EuroMarine (http://www.euromarineconsortium.eu/) is organising a
workshop to define a Web Environment that will provide services to the
European Marine scientific community as an effective mean to reach
integration among individuals, institutions and consortia across the
fields of 'omics, biodiversity and ecology (see the attached programme).
Services will address social networking, common/customisable directories
(white, yellow and blue pages), news and events posting, scholarly
publications (data and papers), education and outreach.

Participants will include representatives of past and present EU
projects/initiatives/infrastrutures, and web service providers, such as
Google, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, LinkedIn, Thomson Reuters, Elsevier
and Wikipedia.Invited participants will benefit from free accommodation
meals at the ATLANTIC HOTEL UNIVERSUM - CONFERENCE CENTRE BREMEN
(http://www.atlantic-hotels.de/universum/de/Start.html), and EuroMarine
will
reimburse in part their travel expenses (maximum amount to be determined).

*We would like to invite a Wikimedia representative to**give a 20'
talk**and participate in **workshop discussions. *

*Invited participants from commercial service providers / foundations
are expected to present (20 min) and discuss:
1. The range of services that they can offer to a research community;
2. Case studies of how apps, tools and services are customized by their
users.*

Invited participants from past and present EU Projects are expected to
present (15 min) and discuss:
1. Services that they provide(d) on the web to their partners and/or to
the public in general;
2. Their experience with commercial services such as Google, Facebook,
Twitter, Skype and LinkedIn (e.g. How they were used, how effective they
were, what was lacking);
3. How the project plans to archive/maintain the
services/products/deliverables that it developed (EuroMarine could act
as a central archive for past projects).

/Additional cont//extual information/: Euromarine (currently a project
funded by the European Commission) will become a self-sustained
consortium (with potentially 121research memberorganizations)in 2014.
Taking advantage of its durability, it will coordinate / promote the
development of the envisioned web environment (which short-lived
projects or networks are not able to achieve).

*Please let us know rapidly if you can join us in Bremen on 21-23 May
2013. An online registration form is available at
http://www.euromarineconsortium.eu/registration.*

Impressive, kudos to Kul. Who's next? :)
Also, it's nice that all partners but the first are using m.wikipedia.organd
 not their custom version.
I'm looking forward to the stats to measure increases in reach; those we
had so far suffered from the limited numbers.

Nemo - it was a total team effort. We're going after everyone in a big
way. Everyone should have access to free knowledge. And we'll have lots of
stats soon, which will be incorporated until our monthly report card. It's
one of our highest priorities and our analytics team is on top of it.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] telenor and serbia, india, ... experiences after one year?

2013-01-09 Thread Kul Wadhwa
Hi Rupert,

With regards to the Telenor territories, last year we have launched in
Malaysia, Montenegro Thailand:

https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Mobile_partnerships#Where_is_Wikipedia_free_to_access.3F

In the December WMF monthly metrics meeting I reported we've seen the
following growth in Unique Users in Malaysia and Montenegro: a 39% unique
user growth rate in Malaysia over the first three months since our launch
(starting from a larger base) and a 96% unique user growth rate in two
months in Montenegro. (Thailand launched later so we're still putting that
data together). Therefore it appears that our program is getting new people
access to Wikipedia. In regards to reporting, the main issue we've had is
that Telenor customers get zero-rated access to Wikipedia primarily through
the Opera Mini browser and we had problems getting accurate data on overall
PV growth because Opera uses a proxy which makes it difficult to determine
the originating partner. However, we've been working with our analytics
team and have finally solved this problem just a few days ago. We should be
able to have better info within the next couple months.

At this moment we have better data on our Africa launches. In general we're
seen steady month-over-month growth in PV's from zero-rated access. One of
my team members, Amit Kapoor, wrote a blog post about it which you can find
here:

http://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/10/29/wikipedia-zero-grows-readership-in-africa-and-asia/

We need to improve our reporting so the analytics team @ WMF is making
mobile analytics (and partner reporting) to be the main priority over the
next couple months. We plan to have have more detailed reports of all our
mobile deployments very soon and we'll put that in a place that easily
accessible. Also, we plan to have several case studies of our findings
available over the next few months as well, which will include both
quantitative and qualitative info and will reveal our other learnings.

In regards to Serbia and India...we had a few difficulties launching them
earlier but they should be coming online soon. And we plan to have several
other big launches to announce within the next few weeks. Stay tuned.

oh...and Happy New Year too!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Wikimedia Foundation and Saudi Telecom (STC) partner to provide access to Wikipedia free of mobile data charges in the Middle East

2012-10-16 Thread Kul Wadhwa
The goal in working with Intigral/STC is to remove barriers so more people
in the world can have access to free knowledge, and in this specific case
it's in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain. There isn't a deal here that
involves content management, revenue (no money exchanges hands), or
anything that affects the normal way we support the projects. You can find
more info on our QA here:

https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Mobile_partnerships#STC

If we did not launch Wikipedia Zero in Saudi Arabia then that would mean
that people in the region would still have to pay to access Wikipedia
through their mobile phones. And that financial cost, which may be nominal
or tolerable for some of us, it's very prohibitive to many more people. As
other mobile operators such as Orange and Telenor have done, Intigral/STC
graciously offered to eliminate that cost to eliminate the cost barrier.
It's limited to that. The Wikimedia Foundation has not, and will not,
censor or block any content whatsoever as part of its partnership with
Intigral/STC.
