2020-01-14 Thread LiAnna Davis
Happy New Year! The Wikipedia & Education User Group invites you to attend
our next Open Meeting via Zoom on *Tuesday, January 28, from 18:00 UTC to
19:30 UTC*.

As usual for our Open Meetings, we will provide updates from the Wikipedia
& Education board, then leave most of the time for our guest speakers. This
month, we're thrilled to have featured speakers from Israel and Ghana join
us to speak about Wikidata in education and outside-the-classroom social
impact from Wikimedia projects.

*Shani Evenstein Sigalov* is one of the leading innovators in the Wikimedia
& Education movement globally. In addition to her work as a researcher and
free knowledge advocate, Shani has taught groundbreaking courses on
Wikipedia and Wikidata, and she'll be presenting in this meeting on her
Wikidata work. A founding board member of the Wikipedia & Education User
Group, Shani resigned to take on even greater responsibility as a Wikimedia
Foundation Trustee. We're particularly excited to welcome her back as a
guest speaker!

*Andrews Lartey*, Project Manager for Growing Open and Eco-friendly Skills
for the Youth (GOES), will speak about how Wikimedia Projects can be used
outside the classroom to create social impact (Industry 4.0 skills
acquisition, circular economy and zero hunger). Andrews Lartey will present
on how GOES, through community school farms is creating social impact in
Ghana, the global effect and how various institutions and individuals can
support the project.

No. At the Wiki Education Foundation, we focus on teaching students to
write neutral, fact-based encyclopedia articles instead of essays; our
asking them to write essays would be counterproductive given the mission of
our program, our organization, and the Wikimedia movement. We will not
support this effort, and ask that you do not reach out to them on your own.

[Wikimedia-l] Draft Wiki Ed Annual Plan 2017-18

2017-05-16 Thread LiAnna Davis
(Standard apologies for the cross-post!)

The Wiki Education Foundation's draft annual report for 2016–17 and draft
annual plan for 2017–18 is now available on Meta:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Education_Foundation/Annual_Plan_2017-18_(draft)

This marks the first time that Wiki Ed staff have solicited Wikimedia
community comments and questions on our draft. We're doing so this year
based on conversations with members of the Simple APG Committee. As you can
see in our plan, Wiki Ed intends to enter the FDC process this fall. During
the review process from the Simple APG committee this spring, committee
members raised concerns about a lack of opportunity for comments on Wiki
Ed's draft annual plans. While we always publish our board-approved annual
plan on our website, we haven't offered a draft for comments in the past.
In an effort to be more transparent and respond to the Simple APG
committee's feedback, I've posted the draft of the annual plan on Meta and
invite comments and questions from the broader Wikimedia community on the
draft talk page. Comments made prior to May 28 will be taken into account
when Wiki Ed staff prepare a final version of the plan for the board to
vote upon.

As with all nonprofits, our board is the final decision-maker on our annual
plan.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Education Program update: Rod Dunican is leaving the Foundation

2014-06-27 Thread LiAnna Davis
As someone who worked with Rod for the last four years on the Wikipedia
Education Program, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank him for all
the strategic work, problem solving, training development, and budget
wrangling he’s done behind the scenes that have made the Wikipedia
Education Program what it is today. Much of this work isn’t visible to
people outside the education team, but it needs to be done, and Rod’s hard
work in these areas has affected all aspects of the Wikipedia Education
Program.

I’ve had the privilege of working with Floor, Tighe, and Anna over the last
several months, and I know Rod leaves a great team in place who will carry
on our mission of getting contributing to Wikimedia projects into
educational settings worldwide.

Rod, thanks for all your hard work over the last four years!

 Dear friends and colleagues,

Rod Dunican (currently the Director, Wikipedia Education Program at WMF)
has announced that he is leaving the Foundation at the end of this month.
We are truly sorry to see him go; he has been such a critical part of the
Wikipedia Education Program and strategy for many years including his
leadership of the team. We wish you the very best, Rod, and look forward to
 hearing of your new adventures.

I am looking forward to working even more closely with the current
Education team: Anna Koval, Floor Koudijs and Tighe Flanagan. All three of
them have complementing skills and backgrounds, and have begun working
closely and effectively with each other and with the rest of the
Grantmaking team. With Rod, they have been working on an exciting shift in
strategy as they have moved from a more hands-on programmatic strategy to
becoming a facilitative hub in which the team supports different kinds of
local education programs. This has meant that the team has been working
with educational program leaders, volunteers and community organisers in
over 60 countries to map their education-related activities, successes and
challenges. The integration of the Wikipedia Education Program team into
the GLEE team also means valuable opportunities for the different grants
programs to work more closely to understand successful education programs
and to support them through grants and other resources. In particular, the
Education team’s focus on gender and geographic diversity as a strategy is
very much shared across the broader Grantmaking department.

As the team goes forward to develop a road map for the future with our
community members, Floor Koudijs will be the interim Senior Manager for the
Education Program. Initially the team has been assigned different parts of
the world in order to create a baseline of educational programs and
activities, with Floor responsible for Latin America and Western Europe,
Tighe for the Arab region and Africa, and Anna for Asia and Eastern Europe.
Please look at the Education portal for more details.[1]

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, or to Floor, Tighe and Anna, for
any comments or clarifications.[2] We look forward to working in
partnership with our communities worldwide as we support education programs
in service to the Wikimedia mission.

 Warmly,

* Information about the Wiki Education Foundation's participation in the
Education Cooperative kick-off meeting.

I welcome any suggestions for what would make this report more useful in

There were total about 7,740 printed pages added to the article namespace
by students in the program that term. From our past research about the
percentage of student contributions that noticeably improve Wikipedia
articles (my definition in this case of high quality), I estimate 7,000
printed pages to be an accurate number.

Replying on-list since you asked on-list. :) We've done two quality studies
on articles written by students participating in the Wikipedia Education
Program in the U.S. and Canada, one covering the first two terms of the
pilot (fall 2010 and spring 2011) and then again a year later, in spring
2012.

Here's the 2010-11:
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Student_Contributions_to_Wikipedia

Here's the spring 2012:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Ambassadors/Research/Article_quality/Results

As you might imagine, hand-assessing two versions of an article (the
version immediately prior to the student's first edit and the version it
was at their last edit) is an extremely time-consuming process. Given we
found pretty similar results (the vast majority of students significantly
improve articles through our program), we have stopped doing these studies
because they take up so much valuable volunteer time. If there were an
automatic way to gauge article quality that didn't involve volunteer time,
I'd love to repeat the study every term, but I haven't seen any good way of
gauging article quality that doesn't involve hand assessment of articles.

In terms of the 7,000 printed pages, we use WikiMetrics (
https://metrics.wmflabs.org/) to determine how much content students add to
the article namespace each term.

Hope this helps.

[Wikimedia-l] New Program Evaluation report: Other photo upload initiatives

2014-01-30 Thread LiAnna Davis
(again, please excuse cross-posting)

Hi everyone!

I posted the latest in the string of program evaluation reports on Meta
today. This week's installment is on other photo upload initiatives
(non-Wiki Loves Monuments ones):
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Library/Other_photo_initiatives

Highlights include:
* The average photo upload initiative lasts 30 days and has 16 participants.
* A total of 50,386 images were uploaded to Commons for the six reported
events, and 3,456 (6.9%) images uploaded during these events were already
included in Wikimedia project pages.
* The average photo upload initiative generates more than 2,000 image
uploads to Commons with associated direct costs just over $0.60 USD per
image.

Questions are welcomed and encouraged ***on the talk page***.

I want credit for this report to go where it belongs -- the Program

report; the work in it is a whole team effort, including contributions from
Frank Schulenburg, Dr. Jaime Anstee, Yuan Li, and Edward Galvez. Their hard
work went into data collection, reporting, and analysis; I just did some
minor copy editing and publicizing. :)

But that being said, I encourage everyone to post comments and questions on
the talk page, which is where the program evaluation team will be more
likely to see and answer them, rather than having parallel discussions on

Hi everyone!

I posted the latest in the string of program evaluation reports on Meta
today, on GLAM content donations:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Library/GLAM_content_donations

Highlights of the report include:
* Program leaders who engage in activities that lead to GLAM content
donations have five priority goals
* On average, GLAM content donations have four people involved and take an
average of three months to implement from beginning to end
* Only a small portion of the donated media have been used in Wikimedia
project pages
* Program leaders who implement programmatic activities that lead to GLAM
content donations are experienced, and produce documentation and blogs
about their implementations
* And more! Read the report to find out:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Library/GLAM_content_donations

We'll be discussing this report and other reports during a Hangout tomorrow

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Tomorrow: Office hour inside out (program evaluation)

2013-03-21 Thread LiAnna Davis
Just a reminder, this is starting in 5 minutes!

 Hi folks,

Tomorrow at 17:00 UTC, I will be holding an office hour about program
evaluation on #wikimedia-office. The target audience for this office
hour will be chapter representatives and volunteers who are currently
running (or planning to run) programs and programmatic activities.
You'll find some background information about why program evaluation
might be worth talking about in my most recent blog post on the
 Foundation's blog:

 https://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/03/01/lets-start-talking-about-program-evaluation/

As we all know, most office hours follow a certain rule: there's one
poor staffer who is getting grilled by the people on the IRC channel –
people ask a variety of questions and the staff person tries to answer
every question in a limited amount of time. It's a lot of fun (I
guess, at least for the people who're asking the questions) and it has
been a good way of direct communication between WMF employees and the
 community.

Now, this office hour will be different. Not that I don't enjoy being
grilled for one hour :-) I've done IRC office hours several times
before and I always enjoyed answering questions. The reason for this
office hour to be different is that I want to _listen to you in the
first place_. I would like to learn more about

 * _your_ thoughts about why evaluation might be important
 * _your_ experiences with making evaluation a part of program design
 * _your_ hopes and fears when it comes to increasingly evaluating
programs and programmatic activities in the future
 * _your_ ideas and feedback on evaluation practices

Ideally, we would have some people in the room tomorrow who have done
some kind evaluation in the past or who are planning to embark on
evaluation work in the near future. With that said – if you have no
idea about what program evaluation is and you'd like to learn more
about it, you're invited as well! Or maybe you're just curious to see
if this office hour inside out is going to play out well ;-)

I'm looking forward to meeting you tomorrow at 17:00 UTC,

 Frank

I did my best to answer your question there.

. The quantitative method used there has its limitations, but similar
methods are employed in independent (i.e non-WMF) research about
 Wikipedia in the academic literature.

Do you have links to any relevant studies of the GEP?

For the English Wikipedia, you might be interested in the Article
Quality Improvement section of the Public Policy Initiative Learning
Points document[1] (that project was the pilot of the U.S. Education
Program). Last term, because of some of the limitations Tilman
referenced above, I worked with English Wikipedia editors Mike
Christie ([[User:Mike Christie]]) and Doc James ([[User:Jmh649]]) to
run a modified version of the Public Policy research, where a corps of
volunteer Wikipedians edited a random sample of student work from last
term. We hired an outside researcher to cross-tabulate the good
classes (as determined by the quality improvement shown) with a series
of factors present in the various classes (so, for example, how many
Ambassadors did the class have? Were they undergraduate or graduate
classes? Did the professor edit Wikipedia? etc.). We're expecting the
results of that research in the next two weeks. You can see more about
it here: [2].

For the Brazil and Egypt pilots, the number of students is so low that
it's easy to see the improvements by hand. For example, students in
the Cairo Pilot wrote the article on Laura Restrepo by hand [3] and
translated the article on Civil disobedience from the French Wikipedia
[4]. All the articles students work on are listed on their course
pages; links to the various language Wikipedia course pages are at
http://education.wikimedia.org

I'm happy to answer other questions about the Education Program either
here or on wiki.

Which says U.S. Education Program users are three times better than other

Just to clarify, it says three times better than other *new* editors,
not established editors! New is a very key word there.

I'm afraid I don't know the answers to the questions you posted as I
