Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Wikimedia Deutschland: Annual Report 2016

2017-06-06 Thread Michael Jahn
One clarification to Liam's very precise explanations: Donors do not
automatically become "Fördermitglieder"/sponsoring members by donating, i.
e. not every donor becomes a member. You have to actively choose
membership. If anybody is interested to learn more at Wikimania, I just
submitted an informal Birds of a Feather session to which you can sign up
here

Re: [Wikimedia-l] How to communicate compassionately with non-native English speakers

2016-07-07 Thread Michael Jahn
"it is not so much
the words that are used but it is understanding what points are made and
how they challenge the status quo."

--> This may be true, and what we should strive for as a movement. But you
still need words to make those points, and while one may fail to understand
what points are being made, even if all the words are understood properly,
the opposite makes the difference. If you _don't_ understand the words in
the first place, i. e. attribute a different meaning than the
speaker/author had intended, you _cannot_ be in a position to understand
the points.
So, thanks Nick, for sharing! I like your post very much.

2015-06-18 18:25 GMT+02:00 Fabrice Florin fflo...@wikimedia.org:

 Hello everyone,

After three great years working at the foundation, the time has come to
 say goodbye.

I will be leaving WMF at the end of June, to spend more time with my
family, focus on personal art projects and consult part-time on worthy
 causes.

I would like to thank all the community and team members I have had the
pleasure to work with over the years. It has been an honor to serve our
movement together — and to help our contributors share free knowledge with
 each other and the world.

I’m particularly grateful to Katherine Maher and our WMF communications
team for being such wonderful collaborators. I really enjoyed working with
them to manage and edit the Wikimedia blog, help grow our team and publish
some great stories together, to celebrate the heroes of our movement.

Going forward, WMF's Juliet Barbara will manage the Wikimedia blog, in
close collaboration with Ed Erhart. As many of you know, Ed is the former
editor-in-chief of the Wikipedia Signpost and has now joined our team for
the summer. I've worked with him for nearly a month now and find him
uniquely qualified for this project. Starting today, please contact them
directly with any questions about the blog (they are Cc:d on this message).

After June 30, you can reach me at fabriceflo...@gmail.com — or follow
 me on Twitter ( @fabriceflorin ) or on my blog ( http://fabriceflorin.com
 ).

The last three years have been an incredible experience for me, and I am
grateful for all that I have learned from so many of you. You’ve been an
inspiration to me and I have many fond memories of our time together. I
wish you all the best with the next chapter of the Wikimedia movement and
can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with next.

 Best regards,

 Fabrice

2015-01-08 Thread Michael Jahn
Ah, just in time for ENWP's birthday on January 15.
Am 08.01.2015 18:13 schrieb Romaine Wiki romaine.w...@gmail.com:

 Hello all,

On Friday 16 January 2015 Wikipedia will receive in the person of Jimmy
Wales a honorary doctorate in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

He will receive this during the Dies Natalis of Maastricht University. The
ceremony starts at 15:00 in the St.Janskerk (Minderbroedersberg). Attendees
 must be there at 14:45.
After the Dies Natalis there is a reception organized by Maastricht
 University.

If anyone wishes to visit the Dies Natalis and needs more information,
contact me. You need to register your presence in a form on the website of
 the university!

Jimmy has that day a busy schedule (including a lecture for students) and
is not able to have a wikimeet this day. Photos of the event will be
 published on Commons.

On Thursday 15 January Jimmy is in Amsterdam for a symposium. After the
symposium we have organised a wikimeet in this building:
 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waag,_Amsterdam
(It is said to be the oldest remaining non-religious building in
 Amsterdam.)

The meeting starts at 20:00. You can sign up to be present in the section

If you need more information, you can contact me.

 See you next week!

  Hi all,

  * Can we organize a wikimeet that day in Maastricht?

  Rough translation of the newspaper:

Maastricht University (UM) awarded an honorary doctorate to Frans
Timmermans and the founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales. They will be
 honored
for the exceptional contributions they, directly or indirectly, have made
  to academic education and research.

Commissioner Frans Timmermans is praised for his great contributions to
 both
European and international relations. The American Jimmy Wales Wikipedia
has established a platform accessible to everyone, which (in particular)
 for
students not to imagine that it does not exist as infinite source of
information. The honorary doctorates will be awarded during the official
celebration of Dies Natalis, which takes place on 16 January 2015 at Sint

Michelle Craske (nominated by the Faculty of Psychology and

*Wikipedia’s first-ever annual video reflects contributions from people
 around the world*

Today, the Wikimedia Foundation released its first ever year in review
video, chronicling the celebration, pain, fear, resilience, and discovery
that came to characterize 2014. More than anything, it celebrates those
 who
come to Wikipedia to learn and understand the complexity of our world, and
those who edit and contribute information so that others might do the
 same.

In watching the video, you embark on a journey through the world and
Wikipedia, revisiting what you read and edited this year. From the FIFA
World Cup to the Indian general elections, and the Ice Bucket Challenge to
Ebola in West Africa, we follow threads of discovery through Wikipedia’s
vast constellation of knowledge, finding opportunities to contribute along
the way. We venture from Sochi to outer space in less than three minutes.

Wikipedia is among the most popular sites in the world, but the Wikimedia
Foundation (WMF) is a small non-profit. The video was put together on a
shoestring budget, and in less than two months, through the generous
collaboration and contributions of Wikimedians and Wikipedia supporters.
The Wikimedia Foundation’s storyteller and video producer, Victor Grigas
said, “We had to get creative to make this happen, we couldn’t just throw
money at it. This video was made with everyday tools: a computer, an
internet connection, lots of deep, patient thinking, research and
collaboration, and the free content that ordinary people uploaded to
 Wikipedia.”

Every piece of imagery and video we use was uploaded by you. Wikimedia’s
commitment to open access and free information meant we could only use
freely licensed photos and videos when producing this video. While the
Foundation may have edited the video, contributions came from users around
 the world.

You will see many amazing freely licensed images in the video — beautiful
photographs of monuments, recordings of major world events from citizen
journalists. At the same time, you will also see some grainy and dated
images — such as those used to illustrate West Africa’s struggle with the
deadly Ebola outbreak. The images used to illustrate that segment date
 back
to 1976, from an outbreak in Zaire. Although other, more recent freely
licensed images are available, most addressed things such as proper use of
personal protective equipment or laboratory facilities, rather than the
 immediate impact on human lives.

With hundreds of millions of people relying on Wikipedia to learn and
understand more about the world around them, the instance of Ebola
highlights the immense need for freely licensed images of important world
events. We encourage people everywhere to freely license and share images
and photographs of the notable people, places, or historic events — and in
doing so, help make the sum of all knowledge available to everyone. You
 can
upload your pictures Wikimedia Commons (Wikipedia’s central media
 repository) under a free license.

While Ebola’s treatment in this video underscores the continuing need for
people to contribute freely licensed images, it is also an inspiring true
story about collaboration. As the Ebola outbreak raged, devastating the
lives of people in numerous countries, Wikimedians looked for ways to
contribute. Together with Translators Without Borders and the medical
professionals at the WikiProject Med Foundation, volunteers translated the
article on Ebola into more than fifty languages, including numerous
 African
languages. In October, The New York Times reported that Wikipedia had
emerged as a trusted internet source for Ebola information.

Wikipedia reflects the world around us. With each new event, it changes
 and
grows, accommodating our human triumphs and losses. It is the largest
collaborative knowledge project in human history, and it is made possible
by even the tiniest of contributions from people around the world. Join us
in rediscovering 2014, and consider contributing to Wikipedia’s boundless
 knowledge.

Together, we edit our common history.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Child Protection and Harassment Policy

2014-06-02 Thread Michael Jahn
Being the spokesperson, the statement is by and large correct, although not
given in this context but as a reply to a content-related question from one
day earlier. It was used in the linked news source articel, to which the
teacher's association reacted within an hour. As I've written elsewhere,
this was clearly spun. Unusually aggressive move. The association demands
that Wikipedia and all free-of-charge eduational services be stopped,
being unfit for school children. It also demands that printed encycopledias
be reintroduced to schools and school libraries be better funded,
...printed material, that is.

Apparently, the German Teachers' Association has called on the German

What I found surprising here, given the history of the topic within the

Asked about this content by News4teachers.de, those in charge of Wikipedia

As a matter of fact, we at Wikimedia Germany have no influence on what is

Dear members of the Wikimedia Movement:

In the past weeks, I've taken the decision to resign to my position of

For personal and professional reasons, I've decided to return to my
country, Chile, in the following weeks and start a new stage of my life.
Two years ago, I was presented with the opportunity of living in
 Argentina
and working for one of my passions. This was a big challenge for me: I
 had
to leave my country and my family and work in a foreign country. These
 last
18 months have been a unique experience and I've learnt a lot, becoming a
better professional and a more mature person. However, at the same time I
feel that I need to move on and continue with new projects and
 challenges.

Certainly, this has not been an easy decision for me, because I'm very
 fond
of this work, the people that have participated in our activities and the
projects we worked on and we are still working on.

I leave the Association in a very different position than when I took
office. We have several ongoing projects and we regularized all the
 delayed
paperwork. We became the first organization from a developing country to
get an Annual Plan Grant via FDC and have been one of the best-graded
chapters in both processes. We are now a reliable and serious
 organization,
continuing a process of professionalization that can improve our
 programs,
making them more efficient and more effective. Clearly, this has not been
only due to my work, which is why I thank the Board of the Chapter that
helped me in everything and to María Cruz, which has been a great
 colleague
  these months.

My main interest is that Wikimedia Argentina continues to grow, which is
why we have decided that my departure occurs at the end of March. This
 will
allow us to work calmly to ensure the continuity of the ongoing projects
 of
Wikimedia Argentina and the transfer of knowledge once the new Executive
Director takes office. In any case, I will continue to participate as a
member and Wikimedia volunteer, once this period expires. By request of
 our
Board, I will also attend the next Wikimedia Conference, so I will be
 able
to transmit the experiences of Wikimedia Argentina in the last year.

I appreciate the trust placed in me by the Board and all the members of
Wikimedia Argentina and their support all these months. I'm sure they
 will
continue the great work we have done lately.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] WMF's New Global South Strategy

2013-08-30 Thread Michael Jahn
Regarding missing alternatives to the GS _term_.

2013/8/30 John Vandenberg jay...@gmail.com

 'Global Strategy countries'?

I think this aligns with the intention of GS, which is to support
initiatives that help make our movement more global by investing in
areas/languages where editors and/or readers is low but potential is high.

I tend to say that it's not about areas/languages but about the challenges
mentioned in Asaf's slides. Global -- in my opinion -- is a term that
emphasizes _unifying_ aspects of a subject. At its core the GS initiative
is about conditions (re: WP, accessing and contributing) that are
_different_ between certain areas of the world and others. That's why
global won't do the trick. The challenges: factors section in Asaf's
slides suggests that this difference has its roots in
* limited access to the internet and to materials,
* diglossia and other language issues,
* financial, political and cultural limitations.

...all of which are social issues (-- terribly unscientifc
oversimplification alert). In other words: The challenges have nothing to
do with latitude (or longitude) but have an inherently social nature. Thus,
there may not be a need to find a geographical label at all. What matters
is a priority list which determines in which countries support is both
highly necessary and most likely to be effective. With the countries listed
in the aforementioned slides the WMF has such a list. I guess if
Greenland[1] met the priority criteria (showing a huge community potential,
having web access issues and specific cultural issues, and so on and so
forth), it would probably make the priority list, wouldn't it? My point is:
An alternative term for global south could be something based on _what_
is addressed instead of _where_ things are addressed. Could be something in
the direction of Social Access Initiative or the like. (Really, just an
example for illustration purposes, I won't defend it :-)

Best,
Michael Jahn

[1] My apologies to Greenland. I know nothing about you, except that you're
way up north! It's a shame. Don't mean to insult you.

 is
   emphatically not on the agenda.

The term Global South is pretty
awful and deserves a quick death.

   Agreed...

But based on the title of the

   yet.

...but what do we replace it with? This has been rehashed quite a bit,
  but
no one has come up with a compelling alternative that's reasonably
  concise
and is politically acceptable. (Personally I am happy with developing
world and developing nations, but of course those terms are
  euphemistic
as well, and apparently no longer acceptable in some circles.)

I have stated before that the term, for us, is just shorthand for a
 list
  of
countries, and we make no essentialist assumptions about some
 uniformity
throughout all these countries. It is my understanding that most of
 the
consternation (kittens dying etc.) the term causes is due to the
  assumption
that we _are_ making an essentialist assumption and treating all GS
countries the same. I hope it is by now evident we are not.

Once again, I find no point to debating this. All who _are_ interested
  are
welcome to hash it out somewhere, and submit a consensual term (or a
shortlist) to WMF for consideration. If a superior term arises, I
  promise
to make an effort to adopt it across WMF. Until then, let's focus on
 the
actual work rather than the nomenclature.

I'm a little confused about whether the ongoing programs in Brazil
 and
India will continue. There's a note that reads No WMF contractors on
  the
ground any more, but it's unclear whether this means a
 discontinuation
   of
the current folks. And the final slides focus on future engagements.
  Does
the no contractors on the ground line mean only full-time staff
 will
  be
working with (engaging with, if you prefer) areas in the future?
   Full-time
staff and local chapter folks, I guess? And simply no Wikimedia
   Foundation
contractors?

There are no WMF employees outside the US, so no contractors on the
ground (in the GS context -- we still have engineers around the
 world!)
means that (once the Brazil transition is complete -- this is in
  progress),
no program work in the GS

[Wikimedia-l] WMDE report_s_: 2012 Annual Report in English, ...and a couple of new features

2013-05-15 Thread Michael Jahn
Dear all,

WMDE's 2012 annual report was recently published in German. Today, I posted
an English translation on Meta, too[1]. Like last year's annual report the
2012 edition comes as a PDF. Unlike last year we additionally converted
both the German and English reports into wiki versions. This is to take a
step forward regarding readability. At the same time, feedback on Meta can
be gathered more directly. (A preview to the PDF layout and the designed
report is embedded, though.)

The annual reports are one of several puzzle pieces when it comes to WMDE
reporting. Our monthly reports have been coming bilingual for quite a while
now[2], so as to serve German-speaking communities and the international
movement alike. With the evolving quarterly FDC reporting routine we aim to
keep that up. Even more importantly, we seek to create a genuine quarterly
report[3] for our specific language communities. Therefore, information for
the FDC Q1 report form was gathered with an additional perspective
(German-language readers) in mind.

This is a first step. We're looking forward to exploiting a growing pool of
quarterly reviews in a number of ways. We'll be able to add another layer
of information for communities, while learning from documented experience
and embracing opportunities to review and adapt WMDE's project work.

Please find our reports online!

Best,
Michael

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Licencing question

2013-01-22 Thread Michael Jahn
Hi,

great question, Richard! Seconding Matthew's comment on WMF blog policy: At
Wikimedia Deutschland we adopted the bottom notes for posts with multiple
images[1]. As a general rule, we include attribution in the bylines[2].

Adding yet another aspect to sufficient CC licensing, let's not forget that
CC deeds actually recommend linking to deeds[3], as exemplified here[4].

I particularly like Thomas' notion of not differentiating between
attribution requirements for text and images. From my personal
understanding of CC license terms, I agree. There is no difference, which
indeed leads to the question:

How to deal with authorship attribution of dozens of authors (to pick a
rather simple example) under CC-BY-SA in any convincing manner? That is,
convincing as in intuitive and practical use cases.

I sense that this is, first of all, an issue for Creative Commons licensing
politics.

Michael

Wikimedia sites do not use a 'byline' on their images - for example,
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page requires an image to be
  clicked
on before you can view the licence and the author information. The same
applies for Wikipedia, and the WMF (and WMUK) blogs.

 Hi Richard,
On the Wikimedia blog, we include Copyright notes at the bottom of each
post with images and include the Title of the photo, the author's name (and
link to userpage if available) and the link to the relevant license page on
CC or elsewhere. See for example:

 http://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/01/19/wikimedia-sites-move-to-primary-data-center-in-ashburn-virginia/

This process was formalized after a Commons user pointed out to us that we
appeared not to be in compliance with the URI sub-clause of the CC-BY-SA
 license. cf sections 4 a) and 4 b) here:
 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/legalcode

Our legal team affirmed the Commons user's assertion and we have
subsequently implemented the Copyright notes special field in the admin end
or our blog. You can see a bit more info here on the instructions we give
 to post authors and editors:

passed a resolution to establish the Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC)
 [1].
Full details about the planned structure and processes of the FDC can be
found in the framework proposed to the Board [2]. This framework was
developed over the past few months with input from a variety of people
 across the movement.

We will be holding two sets of *IRC office hours* on *Wednesday 25 July*,
 to answer any questions community members may have about the FDC process;
in particular the first step of establishing the eligibility to apply to
the FDC. Office hours will be held:

 · 16:00-17:00 UTC/09:00 PDT Wednesday, July 25th

 · 23:00-23:59 UTC/16:00 PDT Wednesday, July 25th

On *Monday 23 July 2012*, the Foundation will publish a list of eligible
entities based on the eligibility criteria established in the framework
 [3].
Please let me know if you believe there are any corrections to be made to
this list. Entities who are interested in applying for funds through the
FDC but are ineligible due to compliance issues should work with the
Foundation to develop a plan to correct compliance issues.

Entities who are ineligible for other reasons - or who would prefer not to
go through the FDC process in this round -may seek funding through the
 Wikimedia Foundation Grants Program.

I will be sending out a more detailed email on Monday to inform you of this
list and next steps in the process. I look forward to speaking with you on
 Wednesday.

 Sincerely,

 Garfield Byrd

(WMF Chief of Finance and Administration)

Dear all,

a full English translation of Wikimedia Deutschland's 2011 annual report[1]
is available at Wikimedia Commons. Giving you a 40-page equivalent to the
German original report[2] (instead of a summary) is a first for Wikimedia
Deutschland.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland: monthly report April 2012

2012-05-02 Thread Michael Jahn
Dear all,

Wikimedia Deutschland's monthly report for April 2012 comes to you with
greetings from Germany's most important web conference. There is no en.wp
article about the re:publica (yet), so I'll link you to the German
article[1]. The re:publica 2012 takes place in Berlin, May 2-4. 270
speakers from more than 30 countries will address an audience of 4,000
bloggers, politicians and media people.

Wikimedia Deutschland is taking our core goals to this years re:publica. In
a dozen sessions at our own event booth we tell people about free
knowledge, free licenses, why Wikipedia needs more (female) editors, and
many more topics from participation to usability and quality. Among other
things, Wikidata is of course one of the most prolific subjects regarding
media coverage.

A Wikimedia recap of the event will certainly be part our next monthly
report. For now rest assured that the April report[2][3] holds its own ;-)
Go to Meta and learn about why we're posting a Wikipedian in Residence job
description and who was hired recently to support GLAM activities. Find out
about Wikidata's first month and what accounts for Wikimedia Deutschland's
upcoming surge of chapter members. No more spoilers.

Betreff: Wikimedia Deutschland: March 2012 report
An: wikimediaannounc...@lists.wikimedia.org

Dear all,

please find Wikimedia Deutschland's monthly report for March 2012 on
Meta[1]. If you don't check it out, you may never get to know why political
parties in one of Germany's federal states just can't avoid to answer
WMDE's questions these days or which kinds of German newspapers covered
Wikipedia workshops lately. And well, there's Wikidata and much more
interesting things you wouldn't want to miss!

By the way, I linked this month's report both here
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_chapters/Reports
and here
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Reports

Supposedly, all chapter reports should be found in both places, but they're
not. Do we need both chapter subpages?

Best
Michael
