Dear WLM Members,

The WLM Android app has been updated to v1.2.4, named Daigo-ji.

Release notes:

* Dynamically loads localization updates
* Clears large image previews before taking another photo - may help with
out of memory errors
* Stops Mobile to desktop upload category from being added to uploads
from the app - this category should be limited to desktop uploads from a
mobile upload

Please note: there are issues with the Cordova interface to the camera that
are outside of our control (Cordova is the app framework used to build our
mobile apps).

There are a significant number of users experiencing crashes and we are
limited in our ability to debug these problems, for several reasons:

* We are not able to reproduce these problems on the same devices that
seems to be experiencing the problems
* Google Play captures a part of the error which does not include the
Cordova aspects
* Google Play does not allow us to contact reviewers or people reporting
crashes

Therefore, if you hear of any users having such problems, please have them
contact us by email at: mobile-feedbac...@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thanks for your support.

Phil

[Wikimedia-l] Fwd: Mobile site banner to promote the WLM App

Subject: Mobile site banner to promote the WLM App
To: Wiki Loves Monuments Photograph Competition
wikilovesmonume...@lists.wikimedia.org

Dear WLM Members,

As of yesterday, a banner promoting the WLM Android App has appeared on all
pages of the WIkipedia mobile site and the sister projects, on Android
devices only. This banner can be closed easily by the user, and won't
appear again until the user clears the data of his/her browser.

To summarize, the banner:

- appears on the mobile site only
- appears on Android devices only
- appears on all pages in all languages
- can be closed easily and persistently
- is being localized
- links to the app on Google Play

We are tracking downloads of the app to see what impact this makes.

To all of you who considered putting the banner on your WIkipedia main
page, this removes the need for making the manual change. I believe there
were no cases where this was actually done, but if it was, the banner would
appear twice on the main page, so the manual version can be removed.

Thank you for your support.

[Wikimedia-l] WLM Android app goes live!

2012-08-31 Thread Philip Chang
Greetings All,

The official release of the WLM Android App has been published on the
Google Play store!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wikipedia.wlm

Now is the time to download the app from Google Play and tell us if
there are any issues before the contest starts on September 1st. All
uploads go to Commons, so send photos that you want the world to see.

In just a few days we've seen some amazing uploads including:

*
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Torre_de_H%C3%A9rcules_(taken_on_30Aug2012_15hrs26mins40secs).jpg
*
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Union_Square_(taken_on_27Aug2012_13hrs36mins9secs).jpg
*
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Southern_Pacific_Railroad_Locomotive_No-_1673_(taken_on_25Aug2012_10hrs6mins28secs).jpg

and you can see all of our mobile uploads below:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Uploaded_with_Android_WLM_App

For those of you in San Francsico, come by to the third floor to see a
visualization of all the mobile uploads on the big screen in admin
alley. If your not with us then you can load:
http://jonrobson.me.uk/wlm/to see the same. We took the majority of
these photos on Monday when the
team took a break from development and wandered San Francisco, Tucson, and
Chicago to field test our app. This was one of the best ways that we could
test our app. Since Monday we've seen amazing photos from Pittsburgh, South
Dakota, Mexico, and Spain from Wikipedians that we know and numerous that
we don't. We love when this happens!

Please write to us with any comments so that we can make the app even
better.

Thank you for your cooperation and support, and let's make 2012 the
best year ever!

Best regards,

The WMF Mobile Team
