Re: [Wikimedia-l] New Feature from Community Tech: Enhanced Password Reset

2020-05-12 Thread Rehman Abubakr
This is a really useful feature, thank you.

I hope https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T153454 would also be considered
sometime in the near future. It's not directly related, but related to password
security.

Tldr, if I use abc123 as my password, I would get my normal admin account. But
if I use xyz456 I would get it to the same account, but reduced access to power
tools (useful for public computers).

Hello everyone,

The Community Tech team[1] has released a new feature: Enhanced Password
Reset[2]. We developed this feature in response to the #3 wish[3] from the 2019
Community Wishlist Survey[4]. With this feature, you can prevent password
reset emails from being sent unless both your username and email address
are provided on Special:PasswordReset. This is an optional feature,
available in the “Email options” section of Preferences. If you enable the
feature, you can reduce harassment through unsolicited password reset
emails. For more information, you can visit the Help:Password Reset page[5]
and the project page[6].

Thank you,

Ilana Fried

2020-03-09 Thread Rehman Abubakr
I too have cancelled all personal/work/wiki travel plans. The risks are far too
great.

A single infection at the conference, depending on who/where, has the potential
to cause significant damage to the Movement.

I understand the sheer effort that has already been put, but I strongly hope
the Foundation will postpone the conference or cancel this year's conference
for the safety of the volunteers, and to prevent the risk of spreading it to
more parts of the world.

From a personal perspective, I have cancelled all future travel plans and
have requested that everyone I work with do the same. I am of course in
healthcare. Please note that this is not official advise.

Hi!

We are happy to reveal this year's Wiki Loves Earth winners. Surely it wasn't
an easy task to single out only a few photos from all of the beautiful images
uploaded throughout this year's contest, but our jury members managed to do it
:)

Please check the photographs on our blog:

[Wikimedia-l] Conclusion of Wiki Loves Earth 2019 in Sri Lanka

2019-08-14 Thread Rehman Abubakr
Hello everyone,

I'd like to cross-post our final WLE reports here, for the benefit of anyone
interested, or anyone planning to conduct a similar contest.

This was the first ever contest we conducted in Sri Lanka, and there was many
learning points. It took 2 organisers, and 6 jury members, to get this
successfully completed.

Feel free to reach out to me for any questions or comments.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Some goodbye to all

2019-06-20 Thread Rehman Abubakr
Hi Romaine,

I completely agree with Camelia, and would like to echo the same.

Most of us are weird in some way, so don't feel bad. Even after meeting
hundreds of people from all over the world, I still have a very hard time
socialising "normally". I've been this way pretty much as far as I can
remember. But the diverseness (a.k.a. weirdness) of Wikimedians allowed me to
simply be who I am, and be happy. I know a number of people also consider me
odd, but as of lately I'm now more than ok with that.

That being said, most of the time it is so easy for people to hurt others by
reacting without thinking, even for the briefest of moments. And unfortunate
things can happen in the best places we know. My little advise would be to let
it go and move on. Don't let it get the best of you. Hopefully those who put
you down, intentionally or unintentionally, will step-up to make things right
someday.

I've met you a number of times in various parts of the world, although briefly
on all occasions (I'm bad at maintaining long conversations - a party pooper of
sorts!), and I know from your words, expressions, and body language, that your
are an amazing person with a very warm heart.

Cheer up, and don't cling on darker thoughts. It troubles no one other than the
person clinging to it.

Goodnight from here.

One way or another, as nerds, we are all weird. I felt in love with this
movement when I realized that anyone inside would not have felt a stranger.
I live in Rome, where there is the habit of hugging and / or kissing each
other on one cheek and another when we meet. In the Arab world I saw that
the kisses they give are 3. At this point, I will think twice before doing
it. In the MeeToo era we must be careful not to exaggerate, striving to
understand the difference between harassment and what can sometimes be
rudeness only or, in this case, sensitivity and affection expressed in
another way congenital to us.

Let us remember that behind what we perceive as "different" there is a
human being, with his story and his desire for interment and to be part of
something greater, a community.

I will miss you Romaine, I will miss your tenderness and I am so sorry
about how things went and how bad you are.

I don't know about you wikipedians, but I feel terribly sad. And defeat,
because I don't understand what's happening to us.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Bounties…

2019-01-24 Thread Rehman Abubakr
Hello John,

I thought about it too, in a slightly different angle, and maybe it is really
not a bad idea.

What I thought was more for people who are here for a while (maybe those who
have been around for 2+ years, 5000 edits, whatever). More of a motivation for
the older worn out contributors.[1]

I don't know what the 'bounty' could be, maybe something tangible or valuable
in RL (tshirt, products, cake, draw to win stuff), or maybe something that is
more than a barnstar but still digital. I prefer the latter for efficiency
reasons, hence let me elaborate a tiny bit on that:

It could be something like an automated point system that is attached to a user
account. Something like a scorecard that is not editable by users, but is
visible as part of the account, automatically updated in the backend by the
system or a special authorised bot. Something of that sort.

Just my thoughts...

[1] I've been around since 2008, and worked in many parts of Wikipedia and
Commons. As real life gets more hectic for me, my motivation to edit is
starting to vary widely, as while there are sooo many things to do in the
wikiverse during my free time, there aren't any solid milestones you could
focus on each day. You open a random backlog, and there's an endless ocean of
work which if you attend 1 or 1 requests, it doesn't really matter to the
contributor itself. More like starting to mop a vast room-less floor.

Both in Wikipedia and other parts of the Wikimedia-universe there are
a lot of jobs that should be done, but are not so popular. Because
they are not done, people get tired and backs away from whatever they
are doing.

I could give several examples, but lets say spellchecking. It is not
fun doing spellchecking, even if you are spellchecking something
written by a professor. Instead of doing spellchecking you do
something else, like poking around in some code, or write about
Pokemon. While you do so the professor gets a bit annoyed over the not
so perfect article, and starts to wonder what happen to the crowd in
crowdsourcing.

Somewhere along the way the it became so bad to talk about anything
except the pure wikipedian sitting on top of his pillar with a book
and a computer, writing articles in solitude, that we completely
missed the opportunities to get a much larger momentum.

The Norwegian Bokmål Wikipedia has over a half a million articles.
About 10 % lack sources. Nearly all of them has spelling errors. It is
nothing unusual about this.

Could we use bounties to get some momentum?

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Proposal regarding norms for meeting/deadline announcements

2018-10-15 Thread Rehman Abubakr
Hello Pine,

Since we're on the topic of mailing list norms, may I also suggest that we
please do not copy the entire mailing list for any one-to-one well wishes as
well?

Example: "Congrats" messages to various topics like project completed, new
affiliate, edit count, or whatsoever. Certain times, more than half of my
mailbox are simply a pile-up of one-to-one congratulatory messages that really
doesn't concern 99% of the readers. Maybe those can be sent direct/off-list?

Sorry to somewhat change the topic. But I feel this needs to be said somewhere,
and it might as well be here. :)

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Proposal regarding norms for meeting/deadline
announcements

Hi Wikimedia-l and Wikitech-l,

Keeping in mind the large numbers of subscribers on some Wikimedia email
lists, the endless valuable uses for the time of knowledgeable volunteer
Wikimedians, the significant financial costs for the time of many of the
staff and contractors on these mailing lists, and how packed calendars can
be, I propose that we implement a few social norms/guidelines for
Wikimedia-l and Wikitech-l in particular.

1. When planning to have a one-time public meeting, announce it at least 14
days in advance to give everyone who might like to participate that much
lead time to clear space on their calendars. Rarely is a one-time public
meeting so urgent that it cannot wait 14 days from the day that it is
announced.

2. Send a maximum of one reminder email regarding a one-time public
meeting, and also send a maximum of one reminder email regarding events
with deadlines such as Wikimania scholarship submissions or conference
presentation proposals. More than one reminder about a meeting or deadline
is excessive.

3. If extending a deadline, send only an announcement of the extension with
no additional reminder.

4. Send only one email to announce a recurring weekly meeting, with no
additional reminders. Meetings which recur less often, such as biweekly or
monthly, may continue to be announced with one additional reminder.

At this time these are proposals only. Comments are welcome. If the
comments become extensive then I may request that we move the conversation
to Meta.

Thank you,

Pine

[Wikimedia-l] All mails going to Spam for Live users?

2017-07-01 Thread Rehman Abubakr
Hi,

All emails from Wikimedia-l started to automatically drop into my Spam folder
as of a few days ago. I use an "@live.com" email address (from Microsoft
Outlook).

Anyone else facing this?

Thanks and regards,

[Wikimedia-l] Unified Wikimania wiki

2016-10-22 Thread Rehman Abubakr
(cross-posting to Wikimania-l and Wikimedia-l)

Hi,

As earlier discussions on this topic received relatively little response from
the community, I'm sending this email to let you know about the new topic
posted at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:Babel#Wikimania_wikis, with
regards to having a single unified Wikimania wiki.

I have copied the original post below for ease of reading. Please post your
comments on the meta page.

Hi. I was looking at
Special:SiteMatrix and
couldn't help noticing the whopping 14 separate wikis (and growing) for all the
different Wikimanias, including a separate wiki for a "Wikimania team". Is
there any current plans of a more sustainable or streamlined approach to
running these wikis?

I am aware that this has been discussed a few times before, but no significant
effort was put into it. Wikimania project
domain is the most
significant discussion which I could find, but participation was quite low on
that, with no(?) WMF staff comments.

From what I understand from the above linked discussion, some key points
against a unified Wikimania wiki was that:

1. We will not be able to preserve old Wikimania wikis as a "time capsule"
2. Older Wikimania organizers may face new organizers "steamrolling" over their
pages
3. Organizers will not have complete control over the site as old admins might
interrupt for whatever reasons. (or vice versa)

My though for these points was:

1. Why not have each Wikimania project branch their pages as
wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2016/Main page, or alternatively, have separate
namespaces for each project (i.e. 2016:, 2017:, etc). We could then protect all
pages under a project (i.e. 2016/ or 2016:) once a project is over.
2. This could be avoided by protection, as stated above.
3. Make it much less complicated. Once the project is over, all previous admin
rights will be revoked, and the new organizers will get the rights. New admins
can be advise to not modify previous project namespaces, or if better, if we
can block previous projects' namespaces from editing? Furthermore, there could
be a bot logging all changes made to old project namespaces, for transparency.

Is there any other views on this? Did I miss something obvious? Looking forward
to your comments. Cheers, Rehman.
