Re: [Wikimedia-l] Social media cards for sharing from the Wikipedia app

2018-07-26 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Hey John,

I have been using that feature from a very long time, earlier it was known
as Share a fact but now it's share an image option on Wikipedia mobile app.
I have also shared this feature with a lot of Indian Wikipedians and here
you can find a learning pattern about how this works and how we can make
use of this feature.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Learning_patterns/Using_%27Share_a_fact%27_to_engage_social_media_followers_of_small_Wikipedias

Feel free to update it :)

Thanks

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Odisha Government's Social media accounts are now under CC-BY 4.0

2018-04-12 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
 Hi everyone,
I'm happy to share that, Two more websites by Government of Odisha are now
under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Both the
websites were launched by Govt. marking the 70th anniversary of Bhubaneswar
as the capital city of the state and till date Govt. has made seven of its
websites under CC.
Ps: This is the first time we didn't approach the officials for doing it
and they've done it of their own will.

I'm happy to share that, continuing the collaboration with the Odia
community, Today, the Government of Odisha has announced to release the
content of two major departments; Information and Public Relations and ST
& SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare Dept. under
Creative Commons license. Both the department has a huge collection of

It was announced by the I dept. and also by the Chief Minister's Office,

changes will be made in the upcoming week.

Dear Wikimedians,

I am happy to announce that Bhubaneswar Heritage Edit-a-thon
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bhubaneswar_Heritage_Edit-a-thon/Report_contribution#Sangappadyamani>
has started with great enthusiasm and will continue till 10 November 2017.
The Odia Wikipedia community and the CIS-A2K have partnered with
Bhubaneswar Development Authority with the purpose to improve Wikipedia
articles and establish Bhubaneswar as a QRpedia city.

I invite Wikipedians to add the heritage sites of Bhubaneswar by creating
or improving articles in their language Wikipedias. You can see some
suggestions here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bhubaneswar_Heritage_Edit-a-thon/List>
and report
your contribution *here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bhubaneswar_Heritage_Edit-a-thon/Report_contribution>*
.

If you are an experienced Wikimedian and want to lead this initiative, become
an ambassador
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bhubaneswar_Heritage_Edit-a-thon/Participants#Ambassadors>
and
help to make the event a bigger success.

I would like to thank Odia Wikimedia User Group, CIS-A2K, Wikimedia Sweden
and WikiProject India (Wikidata) for supporting the event.

Please help us spread the word!

Hi Lane,

Thank you so much for your kind words,

It is all because of the active participation of the community members in
such initiative and also their effort in making these collaborations
successful.

l also believe that the WikiTungi program by the Odia community has helped
in making the presence of the movement in the state and spread awareness
of the movement in Odisha. The community members in WikiTungi meetups are
very active and is a good platform for the community to learn and share
about the movement.

[Wikimedia-l] Odisha Government's Social media accounts are now under CC-BY 4.0

2017-09-19 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Hello Everyone,

I am glad to share a recent collaboration of Odia Wikipedia community with
the Government of Odisha.

After releasing the content of 2017 Asian Athletics Championships (
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/07/28/digest-asia-athletics-championships/
) another initiative by the Government of Odisha to bridge the dearth of
Information about Odisha on Wikipedia by releasing its social media
accounts under CC-BY 4.0.

Earlier this week, the community members met the Government officials
regarding this, and after understanding the value of Open Content, it took
only 24hrs to release the social media channels under CC-BY 4.0 license.

As a pilot project, 8 social media accounts from Government of Odisha are
under CC-BY 4.0,Now, the content is free for everyone to use, share, and
build upon their work.
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/09/18/odisha-social-media-free-license/

The community is also planning to take the collaboration further and
relicense some of the websites under CC-BY 4.0.

[Wikimedia-l] Asian Athletics Championships Editathon 2017

2017-06-30 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Hello everyone,
Today the Odia Wikipedia community organized the Asian Athletics
Championships Editathon[1] in collaboration with the Sports and Youth
Services Department of the Government of Odisha. During the editathon, more
than 15 articles were created or improved in both English and Odia
Wikipedia.

As a result of the editathon, the official website of the 2017
Asian Athletics Championships is now licensed under Creative Commons
4.0.[2] Now, Wikipedians can use the content and images of the event in
different language Wikipedias.

As the QRcodes will be installed in the signage of the monuments, we want
to make this editathon a multi-lingual editathon. So that it will be
helpful for tourists to access the information of the monuments in their
own languages.

We want to improve it in many Wikimedia projects, including Commons,
Wikidata..
For sure we will look into Wikivoyage. Thank you for suggesting.
Your help and support will make this project a successful project.

[Wikimedia-l] Bhubaneswar Heritage Edit-a-thon

2017-05-13 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Hello all!

Greetings from Odia Wikipedia community!

I am happy to share that the Odia Wikipedians have succesfully forged a
partnership with Bhubaneswar Development Authority to conduct the
Bhubaneswar Heritage edit-a-thon.

This edit-a-thon is aimed to improve Bhubaneswar's digital presence – and
establish Bhubaneswar as a QRpedia city. With this edit-a-thon, Bhubaneswar
will be the first city in India to install QRpedia codes in all of its
heritage monuments.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bhubaneswar_Heritage_Edit-a-thon(page under
construction)

Bhubaneswar, also known as the "Temple City of India" has nearly 300
ancient temples of the Kalinga style architecture that dates back to the
late 6th century. This edit-a-thon will happen in two phases, In the first
phase, the BDA will release images and information of all state and
ASI-protected monuments under CC license to improve Wikipedia articles. The
second phase will be for unprotected monuments.

This edit-a-thon will take place globally in the month of August or
September. The BDA will provide souvenirs from Odisha to the Top 3
International and National (Indian) contributors. I request interested
Wikimedians to please sign up for this edit-a-thon and help Odia
Wikipedians to make this project a success. I will update other details on
the User Talk page of interested volunteers.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bhubaneswar_Heritage_Edit-a-thon/Participants

Thanks and Regards

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Sambad's 100 Women Editathon

2017-03-20 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Dear All,

We finished the Sambad's 100 Women Editathon, As the event was of two days,
the first day was for training the journalists on “How to write on
Wikipedia, Create Account, Upload pictures etc”.. More than 30 journalists
and 3 Wikipedians from Bhubaneswar Tungi attended the event on first day.

On second day, All total 23 journalists and 6 Wikipedians from the
WikiTungi attended the event. The Wikipedians helped the journalists in
writing articles and almost 23 articles were created or improved during the
editathon. We shared the WikiTungi concept during the event and the
journalists were interested in taking part in Tungi meetups and learn more
about Wikipedia.
Tanaya Patnaik, the Executive Director of Eastern Media ltd. also announced
that the Tungi community in Bhubaneswar can use the "Ama Odisha" office for
the meetups. Sambad is also planning for Wiki Training camps in different
parts of Odisha, hope we will hear some good news about this.

I have some nice stories to share, I will share a broad report of this
event in the Wikimedia blog and will write a learning pattern on how the
two days event idea worked for this, how Sambad's effort helped in getting
some good articles and local community participation made it easy. :)

I think it's the mutual interest by both Sambad and the Odia Wikipedia
community, I remember Asaf's data (
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ijon/Content_gap )helped me to explain
the gender gap in the content of Odia Wikipedia. I will share a learning
pattern after the event :)

The event is mainly focused on improving the quality of articles related to
Women on Odia Wikipedia, We hope the journalists will turn into Wikipedians
and make it successful. There's an assurance from Ama Odisha, a unit of
Eastern Media Ltd. that after the event they'll organise Odia Wikipedia
editing camps in different parts of Odisha.

its Eastern Media ltd. is also a popular media house. The event is going to

[Wikimedia-l] First anniversary of Bhubaneswar WikiTungi

2017-02-12 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Dear Friends,
On 9th February 2017, Wikipedians in Bhubaneswar celebrated the first
anniversary of Bhubaneswar WikiTungi.

WikiTungi [1] is a city based Wikipedia community formed to help the
Wikipedians in the city to meet, share and learn. The Odia community's
WikiTungi is a based in two cities, Puri and Bhubaneswar. While Wikimedians
in Puri conduct meetups bi-monthly, Bhubaneswar Wikimedians meet once a
month. In every meetup, Wikimedians exchange their resources with each
other, helping address their doubts and queries regarding their problems
and projects.

During the first anniversary meeting of the Bhubaneswar WikiTungi, The
community members came up with few ideas to implement it as a best practice
in the Wikipedia movement.

*The Tungi members will invite one of the global community leaders for a
Skype or hangout session.
* Discuss the best practice from the global community and discuss them with
the community.
*Updating the minutes of the meeting and sharing them with the other
community members.
*Updating the learning and evaluation team about the new learning of the
community every month.
*The community will also send Postcards as a souvenir to the participants
of the global community for the online sessions.

We invite you to join us for the hangout sessions and share your best
practice with the Tungi members[2]. Please feel free to suggest us more
ideas.

[Wikimedia-l] Odia Wikimedia community documents Ratha Jatra on Wikimedia Commons.

2016-07-07 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Dear Wikimedians,

Ratha Jatra is one of the longest running festivals of Odisha running for
over a month. The festival starts from Akshaya Trutiya and ends after
Bahuda Jatra. This festival dates back to more than 1000 years.

This year, a few Wikimedians from Puri are documenting the process of
building the ratha (chariot) making . They are also uploading every phase
of the building process on Wikimedia Common. Many of the images have been
already uploaded and a lot more are going to uploaded in the due course of
time.

You can see the pictures in the project category :

2. Dinesh Das

3. Dibyadarshi Nayak
