Dear all
As you all know in the Wikmedia movement nothing really inspiring and
creative can be done without the volunteers. Their ideas, time and
energy
are priceless. That is why Wikimedia Poland has created an award to
say

thank you to great people that inspire and coordinate our projects
(expeditions, workshops, editathons, photo contests etc.) and for the
volunteer of the year.
We invited four people from the outside of the Wikimedia movement -
people
representing cultural institutions NGO's and the media - to form a
jury

with a task to choose the projects and the volunteer that should be
rewarded. The jury also gave us precious information about how people
who
are not Wikimedians see our projects and which they perceive as the
most

interesting and inspiring.

The ProWikimedia 2015 award will be given in 4 categories:
1. Free content ambassador - in recognition of a project which had
major
impact on promoting openness, knowledge of free licenses, and free
culture
outside Wikimedia communities or which resulted in resources that
were of

great use to projects, institutions and publications outside of the
WIkimedia movement
2. Efficient content acquisition - in recognition of a project which
exhibited a high ratio of acquired content quality and quantity in
the

context of financial outlays
3. Innovation / pioneering character in acquiring free content - in
recognition of a project which showed creativity, innovative approach
and
original viewpoint in acquiring free contents for the WIkimedia
projects

4. The volunteer of the year

The award ceremony will take place this Saturday in the library of
the

European Solidarity Center - an institution with a mission of
maintaining the heritage and message of the Solidarity movement and
sharing
the achievements of the peaceful struggle for freedom, justice,
democracy
and human rights. And it is a great place to recognize the great
effort of

Wikimedia volunteers who change the world by sharing knowledge.

The ProWikimedia project has already (thanks to the outside jury)
thought

us a lot about our actions and initiatives and given us precious (and
sometimes surprising) insight. But it's main purpose is to keep our
volunteers inspired, encourage them to start new initiatives and show
them
how great job they are doing. I am really excited about this award as
I
truly believe that showing gratitude to our volunteers is something
really

important. And we need to find new ways to do it.

[Wikimedia-l] Science edit-a-thon in six museums‏

2014-12-09 Thread Santi Navarro

Hello,

next week-end, Wikimedia Spain, with six science museums from five
different cities in Spain, organizes an edit-a-thon about Spanish
scientists and inventors. This is a collaboration with FECYT (Fundación
Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología). The museums who participate
are:

*MUNCYT, La Coruña
*MUNCYT, Alcobendas (Madrid)
*Museo de la Ciencia, Valladolid
*Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid
*Casa de la Ciencia, Logroño
*Casa de la Ciencia, Sevilla

we could involve volunteers for every museum. There wil be different
activities and the edit-a-thon will run on Saturday and in some museums
also on Sunday.

FECYT freely shared 104 portraits of Spanish scientists on Wikimedia
Commons.[3]

There is a coordination page on Spanish Wikipedia [1] and Galician
Wikipedia [2]

The hashtag of the event is #WikimaratónCiencia and we invite you to
participate on-line and to spread the word. This activity, in five
different cities and six different museums the same week-end is a new
challenge for us.

Thanks

[Wikimedia-l] Funding a new gear for WM photographer Poco a poco

2014-12-02 Thread Santi Navarro

Sorry for crossposting:

Help one of the best volunteer photographers in Wikimedia Commons
restore his stolen equipment.

Diego Delso is known as Poco a poco in Wikimedia Commons. In case you
don't know, Wikimedia Commons is a media file repository where anyone
can share freely-licensed content with everyone. Wikipedia uses
Wikimedia Commons as it's image repository, so, in fact, most of the
times you view an image in Wikipedia, you are actually viewing a
Wikimedia Commons image.

While Diego is just one of the thousands of Wikimedia Commons
volunteers, he is a very special one: he's one of the main Commons
contributors ever, having some amazing records, such as being the user
with the highest amount of Featured Pictures ever (153 images) and also
the one with the highest amount of quality images ever, with 5,777
Quality Images. That's an awesome amount of very high quality material,
that Diego has given to every living person for free.

Never heard about Wikimedia Commons? It's the repository that hosts
allmultimedia files that you can see (and download) in Wikipedia and all
other Wikimedia projects. Diego's files are used in those projects and
are also available for everybody else with a free license.

Furthermore, Diego has contributed in Wikimedia Commons in other ways.
One of them is by supporting (by being an organizer or a jury) two of
the most importantphotographic contests in the Wikimedia movement (and
in the world!): Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth.

Sadly, while Diego was in Buenos Aires after participating in a
Wikimedia Iberoamerican Encounter with other Wikimedia volunteers, he
got his equipment stolen. In this unfortunate event, he didn't only lost
his camera, zoom lenses and laptop, but also every single picture he
took during his 2 weeks trip in South America, which he was going to
upload to Wikimedia Commons so they could be used by everyone,
everywhere.

As Wikimedia volunteers and Diego's friends, we could not stand aside of
this, so we decided to help him to restore his equipment. You can help,
too, by contributing to this campaign!

Our goal is simple: to collect enough money to help Diego to buy exactly
the same equipment he lost.

All the gear he lost in Argentina is described below, with a reference
to the price from Amazon for the same equipment.

TipoModelo Preço
Camera body Canon EOS 5D Mark II$ 2,694.00
Objective fisheye f/4.0 Canon EF 8-15mm L USM $ 1,349.00
Objective wide-angle f/4.0 Canon EF 17-40mm L USM $ 839.00
Objective wide-angle to telephoto f/4.0	Canon EF 24-105mm L IS UVM	$
1,149.00

Laptop Acer Aspire 1810T $ 600.00
Total $ 6,631.00

Converted to Euro (since Diego is based in Europe) that goes to 5,300
Euro + 200 euro of Indiegogo fee, which is our target to collect.

This campaign is runned on indiegogo.com and the link is

us could learn a lot from both (mistakes and success), and sometimes
more from mistakes already done, and of course, from those already
solved. I think WMES could take ideas and learn from this.

Hi everyone,

For the past few weeks, many people approached me asking for feedback
on what Wikimedia France went through in the past 18 to 24 months.

We realize we poorly communicated on the topic, time to fix that.

I'll try to be as exhaustive as I can be without writing too much
(even though you already know this is going to be a long email).

== Short WMFr history ==

Before going into the heart of the situation, here are some
informations about Wikimedia France. We were founded in 2004. At some
point, in 2007 iirc, we went from 30K€ in our bank account to 200K€
over night as, at the time, we were payment processing.

In 2010, we hired a first employee as a project manager. A year later,
he left the organization. If we look back at why, at the core, he did
leave, one of the reason is that we weren't ready to have an employee.

Though at the time we might have not realized that.

Afterwards we hired three new employees, one head of programs, one
project manager for education and research programs and one technical
project manager.

We weren't able to manage them correctly because we underestimated the
amount of work it required, especially as back then we were still
payment processing.

So we decided to hire a new employee, an Executive Director, to manage
our employees for us and to hire a fundraiser.

It didn't work out, and the new ED left the organization after a few
months. That is where the story starts.

== Facing failures and making radical changes ==

When the new ED left we took the time to try to understand why
Wikimedia France had those issues.

We could have hired a new ED straight ahead, but we believed that,
even though it would have been a good thing on the short run we
weren't sure we wouldn't repeat past mistakes.

We then started to wonder if the organization of Wikimedia France was
the right one, perhaps at the core we were doing things wrong. So we
decided to get help to sort this out and hire a HR company to audit us
and advise us on what to do.

Mostly at the same time, something else happened: the FDC rejected our
first proposal and gave us a gap funding just to get through until the
next FDC round.

At the same time we were auditing the organization we had to rethink
everything we were doing and how we were working.

We had no ED, so the board and staff had to pick up on the tasks the
ED used to do. We first splitted the tasks amongst us and then asked
an interim company to help us hire an administrative assistant to help
us with day-to-day administrative burden.

Before her arrival, we introduced processes used at companies we
(board members) worked at (such as buying request that means that
every spending of the association is matched with a sheet that
summarize what the money was used for and that the use of the money
has been checked by two differents people).

Once she arrived we worked, as a board, to define our needs and our
role. We identified that one of our mistake was that, even though we
had employees, we failed to build up trust and confidence and that we
were looking too hard on small details and not enough on the big
picture.

We saved that thought for later: as we had no ED we had to look at
those details. But when we defined what we needed from our ED, we kept
that in mind. We needed an ED with whom we were able to build a trust
relationship and at the same time have the tools to oversee their job.

We also took the time to improve the board maturity. As we had no
idea, our board meetings were really frequent and long. So we laid
some board rules such as nothing said during a board meeting is
personal, or that everyone should speak its mind but once a decision
is made the board has to commit to support that decision.

As said before we also started to better define the roles of each board
member.

After a few months, we started our search for our next ED. The HR
company we hired for auditing us was charged with selecting 3 persons
we would then interview. We believed that thanks to the audit, the HR
company would have a good understanding of who we were and what we
would need.

== New ED, new board, new organization ==

After a 5 months process, we hired our new ED. We then enforced what
we've set aside a few months before, the board would focus to the big
picture while the ED would provide the board with the tools to oversee
how the organization is doing.

First things first, we needed to redesign how we worked (more

 That
norm, based on the legal status quo, has the effect of extending the
copyright of cultural works for periods even longer than those already
 in
 force.

We do not object in any way to the right of people to live out of the
results of their work, be it in manufacturing, service industries,
agriculture or any other human activity, but those works form the core
 of
culture as the sum of human knowledge, and their use by all Mankind has
 to
be protected too. While it is entirely understandable that painters,
writers or photographers have the right to sustain themselves with
 their
works, it is not reasonable that people who did not author anything
 should
be allowed to make money out of the works of people who died fifty,
seventy-five or even hundred years before.

Furthermore it has to be taken into account that under the excuse of
protecting the authors' rights, an unduly burden has been charged on
 the
users of works of unknown authors, anonymous works or the ones of
 people
who simply did not intend to claim any right at any time at all. The
Uruguay Round Agreements were negotiated by 123 countries. Somebody who
came across some anonymous work that could be dated at anytime in the
 last
century, could be required to find a negotiator among the more than
 seven
billion people on Earth, since, otherwise, he/she could be violating
 some
 state copyright law.

Another aspect that URAA does not pay attention to is the fact that
 many
works remain unattended. When talking about books, it means that they
 are
not reprinted and are not available anymore. But it does not mean that
somebody could just reprint them in order to make them known to the
public. In that way people can neither buy copies of works nor make
 them
themselves. Who is profiting by that? In other cases, photographs,
pictures, rolls of film, etc., just sit rotting -literally in some
 cases-
in storerooms, not only forgotten, also forbidden. Is there any benefit
 from it?

So, in spite of all legal terms, we, the Wikimedians from Spain,
 support
not just our Israeli companions, but the right of all the Human Race to
have a chance to enjoy what has been done by authors. And so we expect
 the
Wikimedia Foundation, as a provider of free knowledge sources, will do
their best and fight for the shortest copyright terms possible,
 restricted
as closely as possible to the author's lifetime.

 Yours sincerely,

I've always been surprised how all the time this discussion re-appears,
most of the arguments are based about in-Wikipedia discussion and not
 about
the impact of our goal: spread free knowledge. What about the number of
articles? And the ranking? And the 'Random articles'? and so on... when
most of our users don't care about that. They care about Wikipedia having
an answer when they are looking for some info, probably via Google or
through a blue link. Do you really think they will notice or care if it
 was
made by human or a bot?

I don't think bots are the solution and they will always have some
particular issues, but please, focus the discussion if the content created
by bots are useful or not, just like any other kind of article, and not
about topics that only are important for those who love (like me)
statistics and are reeeally involved on Wikipedia.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Announcement: Jan Eissfeldt joins Wikimedia Foundation as Community Advocate

2013-04-25 Thread Santi Navarro
Welcome Jan!

 Dear all,

I am delighted to announce the expansion of the Wikimedia Foundation's
Community Advocacy team to include our newest hire, Jan Eissfeldt, whose
work will be focused on the German and Spanish language sites. Jan, who
made his first contributions to the German language Wikipedia in early
 2004
and works on modern philosophers on the Spanish language project, will
 help
us with his specialized academic background. Jan holds a German BA in
social science and philosophy with an intercultural profile. His main
theme - carried over into MA studies - is argumentation theory. This
combination of being rooted in the editing community and providing
analytical skills will help us to better understand the German and Spanish
projects, and to serve our non-English language communities in general.
English language folks might have come across his name during 2012 as he
edited the Signpost's feature News Notes.

The community advocacy team, you may recall, is an attempt to shore up the
Foundation's knowledge of non-English speaking projects, and facilitates
strategic change by providing knowledge and skills about communities that
the Foundation increasingly interacts with through the Engineering team's
frequent technical improvements, through grant-making, our legal work, and
the other activities of the Foundation. In our attempts to learn more
about these communities, get their input during the formation of
initiatives, and figure out how best to deliver initiatives to them, Jan
will be joined by one more hire (soon to be announced, I hope).

Jan will work from his home in Germany, will report to me, and will also
work closely with Maggie, who will serve as his mentor and will help to
organize and lead our community advocates as they are hired.

Please welcome Jan to the Foundation, though he's been a part of the
 movement for years!
