One day I just started recording the WMF metrics meetings, just because I

All the event, portrait, location and product photography I’ve been able to
share and all the productions I’ve advised on and facilitated, too many to
link to here.

Which brings me to my next point:

Wikipedia is invincible. I mean it. They could censor it. They could
imprison and execute those who create it or use it. They could blow up the
servers, burn every print-out and book based on it, ban every offline copy,
forbid the word Wikipedia from being spoken and it would still exist --
because it’s an idea. It’s an idea that despite all early expectations
actually works. And ideas like that are few, precious and very, very sticky.

I keep the text below on the top of my WMF staff user page. I wrote it in
2013 as an ode to curiosity. I’d like to share it with you all now, because
you all do truly awesome work:

We're all curious. All of us.

Our curiosity emboldens us.

It teaches us to learn.

To understand. To imagine.

It’s part of our humanity.

It enables us to do things that we’ve never done before.

Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the
sum of all knowledge.

For the learners, and the teachers. For the curious.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] documentaries about Wikipedia

2016-12-09 Thread Victor Grigas
Hi everyone,

My first suggestion - this documentary from Wikimania 2013 is slightly
outdated but does explain the basics of the Wikimedia movement in about 30
minutes, and is appropriate for a 'theater' setting:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimania_2013_in_Hong_Kong_(no_subtitles).webm
(version with burned-in English subtitles)
https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AWikimania_2013_in_Hong_Kong.webm

If that's too long, here's a 2 minute version about Wikimania from this
year:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimania_2016_in_Esino_Lario,_Italy_(no_subtitles).webm
(version with burned-in English subtitles)
https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AWikimania_2016_in_Esino_Lario%2C_Italy.webm

This 12-part series (about 30 minutes total) designed for teachers about
using Wikipedia in Educational settings:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_in_Education_12-part_video_series

All videos have open captions that can be translated.

[Wikimedia-l] VIDEO - Wikimania 2016

Hi everyone,

In case you weren't there, (or just want to relive it) here is a short
video of the sights and sounds of Wikimania 2016 in Esino Lario, Italy:

[Wikimedia-l] VIDEO: This is the Wikimedia Foundation & This is Wikipedia

2016-05-05 Thread Victor Grigas
Hello everyone,

I just uploaded 2 videos here:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:This_is_the_Wikimedia_Foundation.webm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQzZI0l3IOw
https://vimeo.com/165444283

and here:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:This_is_Wikipedia.webm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gi129oEk0M
https://vimeo.com/165495822

Each is an attempt to explain the Wikimedia movement in under 2 minutes
through the lens of a fundraising appeal.

I'd like to be able to make more videos in this style (with burned-in
innertitles) in various languages, and I'd like to be able to collaborate
and create media with others to do that. I think the way to start that is
to draft a tutorial for how to make or fork these so that anyone could make
their own version, with their own messaging. This would probably live on
the WMF blog, and also on Meta.

If such a tutorial would be of interest to you, I'd love to chat - please
message me off list.

Thank you!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Videos from Jerusalem Hackathon & WikiArabia

2016-04-28 Thread Victor Grigas
@ User:BrillLyle, you beat me to it - I was going to share these here along
with an upcoming blog post about the Hackathon and the Tech meetup. We'll
be sharing these videos from the WMF social media accounts shortly.

If anyone wants to translate the captions from English to your language on
these (non-burned in subtitles) versions below, I'll migrate those captions
to the WMF YouTube and Vimeo accounts:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/TimedText:Wikimedia_Hackathon_Jerusalem_2016_(no_subtitles).webm.en.srt
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/TimedText:WikiArabia_tech_meetup_in_Ramallah_2016_(no_subtitles).webm.en.srt

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Powerful on-wiki art visualization

2016-02-23 Thread Victor Grigas
I'm planning to make a short promotional video to share on the Wikipedia
social media channels about graphs, once more of them are embedded into
Wikipedia pages (so that I can get real screenshots). Right now, there are
only a few articles that use this new feature:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:PagesWithProp/graph_specs=500=0

I'd like to have actual examples of each one of these to show:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Graph/Demo

So if anyone creates new graphs, please feel free to email me (
vgri...@wikimedia.org) and I'll try adding your work to the video.

I was excited when I saw this too! Great Job Yuri, Jane
[[user:Jhoffswell]], the VegaJS team, and [[user:Primaler]]!

[Wikimedia-l] #Edit2015 - please share your images and ideas for a Wikipedia year-in-review video

2015-09-02 Thread Victor Grigas
Hi everyone,

Last year, the Wikimedia Foundation published our first ever video
year-in-review:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_Edit_2014.webm

Which covered some of the major news events of 2014 through the lens of
Wikipedia. This year, we’re opening up the idea development and
pre-production process of making a video for 2015 to everyone. This is an
opportunity for you to help shape the narrative of the events of 2015:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:VGrigas_(WMF)/Edit2015

Last year’s video was made largely by myself and another video editor over
about 8 weeks at the end of 2014. I spent the first half of my 8 weeks
researching news, comparing that to view and edit counts of Wikipedia
pages, and searching for media to illustrate those events. After I had that
media, it was a matter of taste to place them in a video editing timeline.
When we published it, the press and the general population on the Internet
reacted positively. All things considered, I think that #Edit2014 was a
good start, and I’m happy with the final result—but I’d like to improve a
few things for #Edit2015.

Here’s the plan:

Open Collaboration: I’m opening up the whole idea-development and
pre-production process (research, scriptwriting, brainstorming, finding
media, etc.) for making #Edit2015 to on-wiki collaboration. While
experimental, we have #Edit2014 as a guide to show that a final product can
be done; it taught me that year-in-review videos cover international news
events through a brand (in this case Wikipedia) by telling each news story
in about 5 seconds and then cutting to the next one. After being multiplied
by around 20 stories, your video will be upwards of two minutes long when
the credits, logos and titles are included. If you watch other
year-in-review videos (like Google Zeitgeist Year In Search) you’ll see how
each will spend 5 seconds on a topic and then jump to the next.

First drafts of #Edit2014 were half global news and half wiki-world news. I
wanted to showcase as many Wikimedia tools, events and projects as
possible. What I found was that since this is for a wide audience, and it’s
only a few short minutes long, we only have a chance to communicate one or
two new ideas (for an ordinary person who uses the internet), so we had to
be very selective about what was showcased. In this case, it was a chance
to talk about the edit button and Wiki Loves Monuments briefly. Then we
have to get back to those global shared news events that the public may
have experienced. Aspects like ‘going down the rabbit hole,’ clicking link
after link, was something that ordinary people were familiar with, so this
is something we used to bridge stories.

The idea-development and pre-production process does not require any fancy
video equipment—just a wiki page and an internet connection. I used post-it
notes on my wall to organize my ideas. I think that we—that is, the
Wikimedia crowd—can be very good at story development and collaboration.
I’ve been collecting imagery and ideas online, and I’d like to allow anyone
to use this space as a place to collaborate on this project:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:VGrigas_(WMF)/Edit2015

An idea I had for this year is to somehow showcase the talk pages about
Wikipedia articles, to show how we arrive at consensus and a
neutral-point-of-view. Finding the right article(s) and talk page quotes to
use to illustrate that would be key. Last year, we showcased the edit
button using the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict. For that, we see closeups of
‘citation needed’ and ‘disputed-discuss’ then we cut to the different
languages of that article. Imagine if you saw a tiny fraction of the
behind-the scenes talk about an article like that and how it aims for
objectivity?

Rules: These are some basic criteria I made to guide what content got into
#Edit2014:

Has the event made it to the international press or wide regional press?
Does the event have corresponding view or edit counts?
Do we have freely licensed imagery for the event?
Was there a special circumstance about this event per Wikimedia projects?
Does this illustrate some aspect of Wikimedia that the public should know?
Is the media beautiful?
Does the Wikimedia Foundation legal team approve of the media?
Do we have some media and news from every major region of the world?

As for production and post-production – Continuity, music, audio mixing, et
cetera are all things that should ideally be online and in a collaborative
manner but currently there is no system in place to collaborate on those
things using Wikimedia projects. I’d love to develop that system, but I
don’t think that it is practical for this year. I’d also like to aim to
make the video as close to 2 minutes in length as possible.

Schedule: So the logical publication date for #Edit2015 is December 15th
because that’s when the press, who would republish and spread the video on
social media, are still at work and this is an easy story for them to
publish before

Dear Wikimedians all over the world,

One of our stalwarts at ml Wikimedia community, Wikiuser:BabuG
  https://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Babug (
  https://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Babug) expired yesterday night.

Despite having paralyzed due to a severe stroke and severely affected by
several subsequent health problems, he was guided to Wikipedia by his
 son,
Dr. Ajay, another prominent Malayalam Wikipedian, as a possible remedy to
  escape perpetual loneliness.

His real world name was G. Balachandran. He was born on 14th October 1938
 in
a small village off North Parur, Ernakulam District, Kerala, the
Southernmost state of India. He joined the Armed Forces Engineering
 College
and then continued to serve the Indian Armed forces for long many years.

He started contributing to Wikimedia, particularly to Malayalam
 Wikipedia,
  in the year 2008.

His initial contributions to Malayalam Wikipedia were based upon a
pulp-converted digital Encyclopedia, released by the Government through
GFDL licence then. He continued to create even more full-featured
 articles
on his own, later. By 2014 October 18 - the day he edited last in
Wikipedia- he had 1935 full-blown articles initiated and expanded by
himself in ml.wikipedia.org. Besides, he also contributed more than 350
images to Wikimedia commons and a handsome amount of contributions to
  Wikisource, Wikidata and Wiktionary.

He always attributed his renewed energy and life's aspirations to the
Wikimedia mission, for having returned to a meaningful life after a
 20-year
long and frustrating solitude while constrained to an immobile chair.
 Ever
since 2008, he stood up and started walking and moving around. His was an
extreme example for us in Malayalam WP to showcase how Wikipedia can
 change
  lives.

In almost all our Wikipedia Outreach sessions, we utilized this great
example to motivate and excite the newcomers to WP.

Tory Read mentioned about BabuG thus, in a document
  http://cis-india.org/internet-governance/india-chronicles.pdf, a
 review
on the state of Indian Wikimedia Communities, in 2011:

  G. Balachandran, a septuagenarian who lives outside of Ernakulum in
 Kerala
state, said that working on Malayalam Wikipedia helped him recover
 after a
stroke left him paralyzed. “He’s much sharper now,” said his wife
 Jagadamma
  K. “He’s made a lot of new friends, and that’s been good for his
 health.”

For us in Malayalam Wikipedia, today is a black day, for having lost a
great beacon on our voyage to ultimate openness and freedom in knowledge
  and wisdom.

Yet, we feel, BabuG has made his life stamped immortal for ever and has
shown us the pathway we should follow in continuing our humble
contributions to the ultimate cause of mankind.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikipedia: #Edit2014

2014-12-17 Thread Victor Grigas
Hi everyone,

I’m happy to share the first-ever Wikimedia year-in-review video,
Wikipedia: #Edit2014.

Wikimedia Commons:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_Edit_2014.webm

Youtube:
http://youtu.be/ci0Pihl2zXY

Vimeo:
https://vimeo.com/114673230

It’s the story of 2014 through the lens of Wikimedia in under 3 minutes.
(We know we didn’t get it all!)

We're about to launch this to the rest of the world, on the WMF blog, on
social media, and to the press. The whole point of the production is we
want the world to get a sense of what it feels like to press edit for the
first time, and what it’s like to contribute to something that millions of
people use, love, and rely on. We hope you like it.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to making this. It’s based entirely on
what YOU contributed to the projects -- images you uploaded and video you
migrated to Commons. It’s based on the texts of books and documents on
Wikisource and the Wikipedia articles that you wrote. And thanks to
everyone who volunteered and shared feedback with us while we were editing
to make it sound and feel like Wikipedia. I talked to many people in
putting this together, so thank you all.

If you want to contribute to this particular effort, you can of course
share this video, but what would be even better is if you could translate
the captions into more languages so that even more people can understand
it. We’ll migrate the captions from Commons to YouTube and Vimeo as they
come in. (BTW does anyone know why YouTube or Vimeo doesn’t have open
captions? Maybe once we have this captioned in 50 languages, we can use it
to advocate that they should.)

We’re already thinking of ways to open up this process for even more
collaboration next year. We put this together in about eight weeks, so we
had a pretty big time constraint for making it an open process from the
beginning.

We’re publishing two blog posts on the topic shortly and will send them as
soon as they’re out.

Thanks! :)

Victor the WMF Communications team

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Best promo videos?

2014-10-22 Thread Victor Grigas
Hi Andy and everyone,

I think all the suggestions above are great!
(clip from the film 'WEB' by Michael Kleiman that Leigh mentioned above,
Commons link below):
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WEB_Clip.webm

Andy, it's a little bit hard to know what to recommend without knowing the
audience you'll be speaking to, but below are things that WMF has produced
that I'd recommend:

We produced this as part of a series to function as sort of an 'ice
breaker' to explain a few of the main points of Wikipedia very generally to
a lay audience. It is closed-captioned in 20+ languages, I have used it and
I know many others have when making presentations in the past :

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Impact_Of_Wikipedia.webm
https://vimeo.com/54384859
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Knv6D6Thi0

The series from 2012 illustrates a few personal stories of some of our
projects:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:The_Impact_of_Wikipedia
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Knv6D6Thi0list=PLVx9pX-VnGVgaxIOUE2zua22g4U5RRIMq

It was designed to lightly touch on the details of editing Wikimedia
projects, without getting too complicated. More, it was made to show how
the projects allow people to be creative in the areas they are interested
in.

A few I'd recommend for a crowd:

Dumisani Ndubane - talks about Wikiversity:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Impact_of_Wikipedia_Dumisani_Ndubane.webm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXvhABH-jFs

The late Adrianne Wadewitz talks about Wikipedia in Education:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Impact_of_Wikipedia_Adrianne_Wadewitz.webm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qwZ7jL4xyY

Mei Jiun Kwek talks about uploading images of crops to Commons:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Impact_of_Wikipedia_-_Mei_Jiun_Kwek.webm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcGotJ927YM

Poongothai Balasubramanian - talks about writing mathematics articles in
retirement:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tojUFx6VdNs

Erlan Vega talks about Wiktionary:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Impact_of_Wikipedia_Erlan_Vega.webm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNZWjJOoG3I

You could also try any of the 4 cuts of 'Knowledge for Everyone' that we
shot last year (
http://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/07/28/petition-for-free-access-to-wikipedia-on-mobile-phones/
):

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Knowledge_for_Everyone.webm

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Knowledge_for_Everyone_(medium_cut).webm

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Knowledge_for_Everyone_(short_cut).webm

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Knowledge_for_Everyone_(short_cut,_no_introduction).webm

Again, it's a little hard to know what might work best without knowing the
audience. I hope these are useful!

I think that indiegogo takes like 10% of whatever you raise if you don't meet
your goal, I think it's like 3% if you do meet your goal

i was also wondering that in the report your partner states: 20-30% of
the wikireaders could not hold any charge so 600 usd where used to
mail them back to the vendor. while the amazon site for selling the
devices says: the batteries last for a couple of months then need to
 be replaced.

Yeah if you read a few of the amazon reviews some say that some devices just
didn't work at all, and some drain the battery way too fast. We had a lot of
reports of this, people were ashamed to say so because the wikireaders were
gifts!.

Aislinn felt that because of this issue the project was a failure and we
shouldn't do the same with these devices again since we were shipping these
devices to mostly poor people who can't afford to keep buying batteries. Also
we found that AAA batts aren't the same quality everywhere, high might
contribute to the high fail rate.

The value of the whole thing is the survey data in the google doc in the report

against COI editing, these edits, as innocent as they are, should not
be done by WMF staffers, but rather by others who don't have any
  perceived COI.

Could the WMF and the BoT perhaps clarify whether COI editing amongst
WMF staff/contractors is officially discouraged/forbidden, and whether
there is something official in writing which lays out guidelines for
how and when WMF staff/contractors should be editing articles relating
  to their fellow WMF'ers.

  Cheers

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Internet rights approved in Brazil

 Hello all!

Subject is not 100% related to Wikimedia, but definitely important for the
 future of projects like ours.

Marco civil da Internet (the Brazilian internet civil rights bill) has just
 been approved by the Brazilian
 Congresshttp://oglobo.globo.com/pais/camara-aprova-marco-civil-da-internet-projeto-segue-para-senado-11984559.
Now the Senate still needs to approve it.

The bill has been recently supported
 http://www.webfoundation.org/2014/03/marco-civil-statement-of-support-from-sir-tim-berners-lee/by
 Sir Tim Berners-Lee.[1]

Back in 2007, several Brazilian civil society organizations started to
fight against bills which were about to be approved creating a penal law
 over certain uses of internet.

This fight led the Brazilian government to build, together with other
Brazilian organizations, a request for comment/collaborative
 platformhttp://culturadigital.br/marcocivil/sobre/[2] for the
creation of a civil rights bill for the internet. Contributions
were gathered together and a first draft was proposed for another round of
 public comments on 2010.

A first draft was negotiated within the government in 2011. A lot of lobby
over the Congress was carried out especially against the articles about net
neutrality and internet service providers liability (both by
telecommunication companies and the intellectual property industries, but
mainly the former - they wanted all internet service providers to be
obliged to remove content under a simple notification claiming the content
should be removed. Internet civil rights activists claimed for the need of
 a justice decision about that).

 The case of NSA spying
 Brazilhttp://g1.globo.com/fantastico/noticia/2013/09/nsa-documents-show-united-states-spied-brazilian-oil-giant.htmlmade
the government become fonder of the Marco Civil bill, fostering its
 approval in the Congress.

Since the first draft of the bill, some aspects were lost, but the bill
remains important and mostly beneficial to internet rights in my opinion.
It's been a long process, with lots of threats to this initiative, but in
the end the balance seems good. Good the the freedom of expression and good
 for net neutrality.

 Best regards
 Oona

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Announcing Anna Torres Adell as new Wikimedia Argentina ED

2014-02-21 Thread Victor Grigas
Welcome Anna Torres Adell :)

On Fri, Feb 21, 2014 at 3:49 PM, Galileo Vidoni gali...@gmail.com wrote:

 Dear movement fellows,

I'm pleased to announce that Wikimedia Argentina has a new Executive
Director. Please welcome Anna Torres Adell to our movement!

Anna was born in Barcelona but settled in Buenos Aires a couple of years
ago. She is a licentiate in Political Science for the Universitat Pompeu
 Fabra and has post-graduate studies in International Cooperation;
Management and Control of Public Policies; and Local Development and the
 Social Economy.

She developed an interest on international cooperation and social matters
since her teens, helping establish an educational NGO in Guatemala when she
was just over 20. She has since lived and worked in Spain, México,
Guatemala and Argentina. Before joining us at Wikimedia Argentina, Anna was
the ED of PROEM Foundation, an organization aimed at coaching small
businesses. Anna's track record also includes working with AECID, the
Spanish agency for international cooperation, and the United Nations
 Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).

She has extensive knowledge and experience in the five dimensions that we
cared the most when recruiting: commitment with the social goal of free
knowledge, working with volunteers, administration, program management and
 funding.

Selecting Anna was not easy, but not because we couldn't find the right
person: We had just too much good EDs we wanted to hire! Thankfully we
could choose from an important pool of candidates and proceed to evaluate
thoroughly each one of them. We received over 100 applications, of which
not less than half were pertinent. We gave all of them a score and made
successive filtering stages before arriving to the eight people we
interviewed in person over the last days.

As you may have read on this list back in January, our decision to hire a
new ED has to do with Osmar leaving us to return to his home country. Let
me highlight that this good news could not have been possible without
Osmar's work and commitment. Not only he helped designing the work
description for his replacement, but he also participated in the recruiting
 and hiring process.

We are extremely grateful to all what he has done to advance our mission in
Wikimedia Argentina, and while we are certainly saddened to see him go we
know that both he and us are doing everything possible to leave the
organization on track and in good hands. Programmatic work will not suffer
from this leadership change; if any, we as Board will ensure it gets
 reinforced.

Anna will formally start working with us on March 1, and throughout all of
that month Osmar will continue with us in Benedict fashion as ED emeritus
to ensure that all the necessary knowledge, proceedings and contacts are
transferred from one administration to another. We are glad to have
achieved this level of stability as an organization, and we'd love to
spread the word about this happy and smooth transition in the
WikimediaConference with whoever wants to hear us :).

We asked Osmar to be one of our representatives in Berlin as his last act
of service, so it will also be a nice opportunity for you to meet him. In
the meantime, please welcome Anna to the Wikimedia movement and to this
 mailing list!

 Best regards,

I'm not sure this is correct.

There are two different implementations possible.
 * Accept MP4 and support a transcoding toolchain, but only show readers and
 editors patent-unencumbered* formats.
I think this is an excellent idea, and something we should implement.

+1

 * Accept MP4 and support transcoding as above, show readers and editors
patent-unencumbered formats by default, and allow them to download the
original file if they wish. This would allow people using toolchains that
only support MP4 to continue to edit one another's work without themselves
having to implement a transcoding toolchain on the client side. Again, the
default presentation for anyone who doesn't know what they are doing would
be unencumbered, but we would be more extensively providing a server-side
transcoding toolchain for users who do not or cannot [depending on whether
they have full control over the hardware they use].

 Lionel writes:
Most of the time it is a bad idea to upload a video without any form of
editing. Most of the time you need to
remove at least the begining and the end of a video file.

Just because that video is incomplete doesn't mean it is a bad idea to
share. As with text, we should be able to upload drafts and work on them
online. This sort of basic editing is something we should support online
post-upload. Forcing uploaders to have an offline editing toolchain in
order to be able to share material is unnecessary; the uploader doesn't
have to be the one to refine the result.

Tim,

You could start an indiegogo or a kickstarter campaign for this. I'm sure
you'd find funding and volunteers to keep it online. There is also a museum
on the ground zero site that you may want to get in touch with about such
an effort : http://www.911memorial.org/ They may be interested in telling
the story of the Sept11wiki, and possibly keeping it online.

When WP was new and still finding it's character, such efforts like what
you propose were not outside WP's potential scope. I just don't feel that
WP is the place for it currently or in the future.

[Wikimedia-l] Exemption to registrations on Xhosa Wikipedia

writing Wikipedia Articles in isiXhosa.

More about the school:

Their teacher has been helping them with this effort for one hour a week.
it's the only time that they have internet access. He told me:

 1. **We started with registering everyone as editors on Wikipedia.
This took a couple of sessions as there is a Wikipedia limit of 6
registrations from the same computer lab per day.

Are there any admins who could change this limit to something more like the
size of a large classroom? These students are the only contributors to
isiXhosa Wikipedia and they are very excited to work on it.

However, as you correctly write, that banner only served those millions of
our viewers a cached image that was uploaded to donate.wm.org (so it was
cached the usual way) and /only/ if they had clicked the play button were
they served the full video. I'm no specialist when it comes to server
loads, but if YouTube does not lie to me, that particular video was viewed
only 78,000 times, which does not seem that much.

As far as I understand, YouTube does not count views when the video is
played automatically (as happened in the banner when a person clicked on
the placeholder image), so the actual view count is probably quite higher.
(Don't know if Wikimedia servers would have been able to handle it at the
 time.)

This requires an explanation- so this particular banner was live for (If memory
serves) three or four days in 5 mostly English-speaking countries only. This
was because much of the material surrounding the video was written in English,
and there was a lot of it, so translation would have been slow, expensive and
prone to error.

Also, auto play of video was something totally out of the question, even if it
was from commons. We didn't want users to load a Wikipedia page to have video
(and audio) start playing without them clicking it. I wouldn't want that myself.

So, we did not have a video that auto-played, but none of us knew at the time
that the view counter on YouTube would be inaccurate. We learned that YouTube
does not count views from embedded videos on external sites. (The actual view
count for that video is more like around half a million views.)

That's what community translations are perfect for; they are free (in terms
of licence) and gratis (in terms of WMF costs), and if properly managed might
be quick in creation and might not contain too many errors (just require a
 peer review before publishing).

We learned that YouTube does not count views from embedded videos on

My Wikipedia nature tells me to ask you for a source that can back up these
claims; both for the number of views and the fact that YouTube does not count
views from videos embedded in iframe / elements. I'd personally be very
suprised if they didn't; lots and lots of websites include their videos that
way, and not counting views would result in serious miscalculations that
would go into tens (or perhaps hundreds) of millions.

I hope this explains something - please do let me know if there is anything

 Hi,
it came to my attention very recently that a link to a YouTube video has
been included in our fundraising banners[1] last year, enabling people by
default to watch a video about Wikipedia loaded through a YouTube iframe
 / element.

There's been a small discussion about this on IRC, and I've been asked to
seek the opinion of the wider community on this matter, which I hope to
achieve by starting a thread on this list.

I wonder how the solution used in the banners reflects on our values,
especially since we prefer to use a proprietary service over our own
Wikimedia Commons, and effectively invite our users to expose their data
(such as their IP address) to an external website (because no one's going
to read the small information about YouTube privacy policy).

I am told that there are technical limitations behind the decision to
prefer YouTube over Commons, but I'm not really convinced about that; I
generally think that we should not include links to websites that can track
our users in our banners, and YouTube (as well as websites that use Google
Analytics for statistical purposes) definitely falls under that definition.

[On an unrelated note, it might be worth pointing out that the video on
YouTube is listed as CC-BY and as CC-BY-SA on Commons, which introduces
confusion and might lead to creation of derivative works that are released
without the ShareAlike clause, which - I believe - it's not what the author
 of the video was after.]

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Celebrating ten years of Wikimedia Foundation

2013-06-20 Thread Victor Grigas
, the Wikimedia Foundation
is well positioned to modernize the user experience and the
infrastructure supporting our projects, while dedicating all its
efforts to the public, working transparently, and releasing code as
open source,” said Möller. “This wouldn’t be possible if Jimmy hadn’t
laid the foundation 10 years ago to dedicate the operation of
Wikipedia and our other projects to a non-profit organization,
supported by a community of donors.”

The Foundation works with a global network of chapters, affiliates and
volunteers in achieving its mission. Several grants programs exist to
support smaller projects by individuals and groups. Last year saw the
launch of the Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC), entrusted with
reviewing larger funding requests from movement organizations and
giving recommendations on the most effective use of donation money to
achieve the movement’s goals. The FDC is volunteer-driven, and two of
its seats are currently up for election by the community, as are three
seats of the Board of Trustees. If you are an eligible Wikimedian,
don’t forget to cast your vote until June 22!

As for Wales, who could have made Wikipedia a commercial venture and
monetized the site’s content with advertising, the decision to
safeguard the future of the Wikimedia projects with a non-profit
couldn’t have been a wiser. “Wikipedia is something special. I like to
compare it to a temple for the mind: A place we can all go to think,
to learn, to share our knowledge with others,” he said.

“The Wikimedia Foundation is here to preserve and nurture that place,
and make sure that Wikipedia remains a shining example of openness and
freedom, a public good that is part of many people’s daily life around
 the globe.”

Ok a few things that people have brought up here and elsewhere:

1 - the manufacturer has said to us that the devices can come pre-installed
with whatever languages are already available :
http://dev.thewikireader.com/language-packs/ and that he would help with
other language versions (from our dumps) if we communicated a need for it.
I mentioned this specifically: http://schools-wikipedia.org/

2 - AMAZON! - yes these are the retailers sitting on overstock, we plan to
buy whatever is cheapest first (highest impact) -- and alot of people have
supersaver shipping (user:Ashstar01 too)

3 - recycling: scroll to the bottom: http://thewikireader.com/
also the key in distribution will be to find the schools that could REALLY
USE the devices, (so that they do not go to waste) so if anyone on this
list knows schools, please share:
wikireaders4k...@gmail.com
http://wikireaders4kids.tumblr.com/suggest

4 - I hope i'm not creating any conflicts of interest by being a WMF
staffer, please know - if i do cross some line let me know and i'll correct
myself ASAP. I really mean this please contact me if you feel that there is
any COI at all.

5 - also here is the .en village pump post from a few weeks ago:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Free_Distribution_of_WikiReaders_to_offline_schools_around_the_world.2C_funded_by_Kickstarter.com_or_Indiegogo.com

6 - we are also looking into contacting battery manufacturers and solar
charger manufacturers to see if they would like the good press by donating
a few of their chargers batteries to the schools that end up getting the
wikireaders.

Thanks for your interest everyone! As of me writing this, we are already at
$505 USD and I expect that alot of people are away from their computers for
the weekend and will see the campaign on Monday when they get to work.

I also think that this is going to be a fun distribution thing because of

We are also interested in finding solar battery charger manufacturers who

There is Simple English Wikipedia as far as English is concerned. For
other language, there is the *Wikikids* proposal that has had some activity
recently and 2 or 3 existing and well running wiki for children.
That's about setting a frame pulled after the existing wikis for kids, to
make good work, associate potential editors (including children), and then
(notably ;-)) to supply a WikiReaders4Kids with suitable and quality
content a few years later !
Present step is to assemble a comparison between those existing wikis to
help to work out what should be the basic principles for such a project.
Have a look at it !

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Proposal to use the internal wiki more

2013-04-10 Thread Victor Grigas
things like staff phone numbers, info on the
employee health plans, how to send to the office printers, and how to
  submit an expense report.

As on internal, there's also lots of outdated stuff, like old notes from
2008 staff meetings; there are scratchpad idea pages that probably could
 be
elsewhere, and there are some pages about department functions and
 project
drafts that I'm sure no one would mind being on meta, but much of the
interesting stuff is public (the annual plan, the communications
 calendar),
and as far as I can see with a quick scan there are not large-scale
  discussions happening there.

So, back to the start of the thread: using a wiki effectively does seem
like a scoping question, yes, and I think internal (and any other
internal/private wiki) would benefit from specific scoping like Mike
proposes; his suggestions seem reasonable to me. I think I can also say
without violating confidentiality that almost all of the mail to the
internal list in the last few months has not been discussion focused, but
rather has been notices of chapter board elections, meetings and reports,
and I would love to see all that traffic be public (even if it's on a
separate list so not everyone has to get the notices if they're not
interested) -- there's nothing inherently confidential about it, and it
would be nice for that info to be easily findable.

 millions creates a discrepancy.

If users are confused, feel free to share this video with them:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?**v=3Knv6D6Thi0sns=emhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Knv6D6Thi0sns=em

I designed it to explain a lot of how Wikipedia works (donations and all)
in a short amount if time, and assuage anxieties about getting involved as
 an editor.

Very nice video!, with a heavy focus on the volunteers who are working for
 free, for a cause, that's it's a non-profit company, that Jimmy Wales don't
take a salary or expenses. People will think this is not about money at
all. In fact, about how much money will end up in whose pockets, we just
know that it's for the Foundation team. This communication is aimed to
build trust and collect money and is doing a great job to keep people
unaware of what happens to the money. That's what I was talking about. When
people become aware there *is* a strong want for money, their image of
Wikipedia and siblings will prove inadequate to the reality, thus
shattering their beliefs to some degree, and leading to confusion. But hey,
that's the problem with any form of communication that applies a filter to
 reality.

Understood! Last year I shot this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia_Foundation_Interview_with_Chief_of_Finance_and_Administration_Garfield_Byrd_October_7,_2011.theora.ogv

I tried to be as clear and concise as possible, including the date of the
recording and using the financial reports as an outline, and including
those as a link in the video:

http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Financial_reports

I do absolutely agree that any edit of any footage is in and of itself a
filter.

Victor

This video answers perfectly and concisely the questions a confused person
may have, though I didn't see the links. Very well done!

Good! I'm glad it helps - I genuinely appreciate your honest feedback, It
