One clarification to Liam's very precise explanations: Donors do not
automatically become "Fördermitglieder"/sponsoring members by donating, i.
e. not every donor becomes a member. You have to actively choose
membership. If anybody is interested to learn more at Wikimania, I just

Congratulations.

I just want to add a clarification about the membership numbers, since that
is getting a lot of attention in this thread. Not because these numbers are
incorrect, or bad, but that other Chapters might be feeling upset that they
aren't also achieving such high numbers.

WM-De has, according to this report, 50,000 members in total
https://2016.wikimedia.de/en/report/members However, what the other
chapters need to understand - so they don't feel bad by comparison! - is
that the Germany system has two methods of membership. These are [as it
been described to me by a German-speaker, I apologise if I'm missing a
nuance of language]:
- "Aktives Mitglied", the members with voting rights
- "Fördermitglied", the people who become a member when they donate, but
have no voting rights.
The English version of the report uses the terms "active" and "sponsoring".
Other chapters only have this first group.

The German-language Wikipedia article about WMDE itself describes the ratio
between these in April 2015 as 1.921 active : 18.402 sponsoring. https://de.

Another factor is that, unlike WM-De, other Chapters do not have direct
ownership of the fundraising banners and therefore they cannot promote

Yes, that is a really great result.
Switzerland is like a next-door neighbor. If Germany can do it, we should
be able to do it as well !
Lets say that our goal for Switzerland should be 1'500 new members... :)

Hi all,

We have recently published our Annual Report 2016. If you would like
to learn more about examples of Wikimedia Deutschland's projects and
programmes from last year, you might want to read about one or more of
the following:

* our new editors campaign,
* our successes with Wikidata,
* our Technical Wishes project,
* our achievements in the political and legal field,
* our work for Open Education & Open Science
* our growth in membership numbers
* our regionalisation efforts
* our work for the international movement

Inspired by the WMF's recent Annual Reports, we have – for the first
time – created a visually appealing, responsive online version that
also works pretty well on mobile. https://2016.wikimedia.de/en

If you rather prefer to print it, please be patient: We will publish
the oldschool PDF version and link it on the meta [[Reports]] page
next week.
