Re: [Wikimedia-l] 2015 - 2016 Fundraising Report just published

2016-11-28 Thread Pine W
There is an ongoing discussion about this subject in Wikipedia Weekly on
Facebook, and it appears that the matter is not yet closed.

Stephen, could you clarify who "we" is in your last paragraph? I am not
sure that WMF Legal is the entity that should be determining what is "in
the best interest of the Wikimedia movement or Foundation". While WMF Legal
certainly should make recommendations, the final decision about what is
best for WMF should rest with the WMF Board (which I have been pressing for
more transparency in financial matters for quite some time; I believe that
it would be in WMF's best interest to set a good example by being much more
transparent about financial matters in general).

Also, I question whether the decision about what is "in the best interest
of the movement" is WMF's decision to make.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] 2015 - 2016 Fundraising Report just published

2016-11-21 Thread Stephen LaPorte
Hi Chris and Lodewijk,

I was asked to follow up here on the questions from October about
country-by-country fundraising data.

We make fundraising decisions, including decisions about what information
we release, based in part on our internal legal assessments in the country.
We don't go into our legal assessments publicly, as it may make it
difficult to keep legal risks and costs low.

We strive to be as open about our fundraising activities as we can.
Compared to nonprofit industry standards, we release more information than
other non-profits tend to, including continent-level breakdowns of
donations, information about revenue channels and testing, and reports from
our fundraising research:

Reader_Survey_November_2015.pdf

I’m sorry that we can’t give more satisfying answers to your questions, but
in this case we have determined that publishing the requested information
would not be in the best interest of the Wikimedia movement or Foundation.

*bump*

Just wondered whether anyone had been able to look in more detail at what
the legal/data protection barriers to releasing statistics broken down by
country are?

I'd be particularly interested to see how WMF is doing at securing repeat
donations and tax-efficient donations from the UK, as I just received an
appeal email with a link to a form that was not really optimised to do
either (generally speaking if someone is being asked for a £10 one-off
gift, asking them for a £10 monthly gift doesn't get many monthly gifts)

I can understand that if there are countries with very small numbers of
donors you wouldn't want to give country-by-country breakdowns. But
national charities report on how much money they raise all the time without
any legal barriers, so I doubt there can be barriers to WMF reporting by
country for most countries

Huh? Like Rupert, I find this comment very confusing. What specific
privacy and legal reasons are there for not providing a per-country
breakdown of donations?

Re: [Wikimedia-l] 2015 - 2016 Fundraising Report just published

2016-10-18 Thread Joseph Seddon
Hey both,

Apologies for the delay in responding,I have been meaning to respond to
this.

Lucas: So one of the biggest changes in Latin American was that the
fundraising tech team integrated a new payment processor to accept both
local currency and payment methods in a number of Latin America countries.
This new integration was key to offering a convenient way to donate and
what ultimately led to the success of the Latin America campaign. Out of
all the Latin America countries Brazil as you might expect had the biggest
gains from this improved payments flow being the largest in size both in
terms of: total contributions; the numbers of donors; and its large
population size in comparison to its neighbours.

Lodewijk: So just as last year, fundraising totals have been posted by
region but there is currently no public data for donations from each
country. It's felt that the regional breakdown at least provides a
compromise between providing a semi-decent view of where our donations come
from while at the same time respecting privacy and other legal reasons that
is associated with releasing country level data.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] 2015 - 2016 Fundraising Report just published

2016-10-01 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Sam,

Thanks. One question that I keep hearing from our volunteers, from our real
life organisers and other stakeholders, as well as the press is how the
amounts are broken up by country. This would be very helpful information,
and would help us to place best practices better. It has been asked for
several years in a row now, and it would be great if this information could
be released. I understand there are some privacy concerns for some of the
smaller countries, where you could perhaps round it off to the nearest
round number or something? Both number of donors and amount would be very
helpful! Or is this already being published somewhere?

Thanks,

Lodewijk
