Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing the Fellowship News

2012-07-09 Thread Samuel Klein
Siko and fellows,

This is really great; thank you for publishing it!

Lodewijk: yes, we could use a newsletter covering the full range of amazing
things happening in the wide wiki world. It would be much easier today,
with dozens of small, focused, reliable news sources within the movement,
than in years past.

If anyone is interested in publishing such a compilation, but unsure how to
get started, perhaps we could organize a series of office hours on options
and formats for publishing community news.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing the Fellowship News

2012-07-09 Thread Siko Bouterse
Ah yes, some more context would have been good in my original post :-)

The fellows decided to put together a monthly digest that rolls together
all their updates from their projects in the past month, because we noticed
that until now everyone in our group shares progress and learning in
different ways for each fellowship project, it can take a lot of hunting to
find it all, and isn't always as transparent as we would like. We wanted a
way to start sharing as a group what the fellows "team" is doing. I also
like the idea because those who are interested in the fellows program and
browse our meta pages now have a place to sample what fellows actually do
each month.

We do report some of this in the WMF metrics report each month, and that
won't change (it will just make it easier for me to write, since the info
will be compiled already!) - so to some degree, Lodewijk, I think the
fellowship news has always been incorporated into a report with other cool
stuff being done by staff and volunteers. I would love to see more updates
from others on cool projects, though, and don't want this to be seen as a
split. If this inspires someone to roll this all up together elsewhere that
would be great! We've got to start somewhere still. If is not of interest
to those on the mailing lists - I know there are a lot of things to read
out there already - we don't need to announce each month though, they can
be watched and subscribed to on-wiki.

Confirming Maggie's thoughts, Richard, this report covers all projects
being worked on by current fellows (which can, indeed, be a varied range of
topics!).

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing the Fellowship News

2012-07-09 Thread Lori Phillips
I'll echo Sarah's thoughts regarding Fellowships vs. Wikipedians in
Residence.

There is a very clear difference, in my mind.

With a Wikipedian in Residence, the organization (not Wikimedia) supports,
funds (in most cases), and "houses" (gives desk space and other resources)
to a Wikipedian for the sake of connecting that institution's staff and
resources with the Wikipedia community. It's working from the external
institution, and connecting with the Wikipedia community.

A Fellowship is a Wikimedia Foundation role, and I'm not going to attempt
to define it again because Steven, Sarah, Siko, and others can do a much
better job than I could : ). But I would argue that typically a Fellow is
not working to "connect" with one singular outside
institution/organization. They are working on broader goals for the benefit
of the movement.

Hence, I would in no way say that a resident is some lower form of
resident. They are very different things, and both, I would argue, are
continually evolving. (For example, when the residency idea started, none
were paid at all, but as things have progressed and residents become more
sought after, there is now a precedent that they are compensated in some
way -- more and more the position is actually becoming quite lucrative.)

Happy to answer any other questions in this regard,
Lori

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing the Fellowship News

2012-07-09 Thread Sarah Stierch
As a former Wikipedian in Residence and a current fellow - I don't feel they
are the same thing. At least in the United States! (Especially where the title
"fellowship" has a scholarly prestige behind it in a way residence don't)

I have been both a paid and unpaid resident, and they have both had the same
equal level of importance in my eyes! I also was a masters student earning
college credit for the unpaid internship, so I suppose I was "paid" and if you
knew the level of pay I was funded for my other residency - its peanuts
compared to what other paid residence receive (and I am grateful for it, don't
think I am not).

For those interested in GLAM Wikipedian in residence there is the This Month in
GLAM newsletter, which I'm unable to access this second.

Also, the fellowship application process is dramatically different then the
residency process. But, that is based on my role in applying to both, and
consulting on multiple residency positions!

Wikipedians in residence are also "not" associated with the Wikimedia
foundation - they are funded by entirely different entities and not managed by
anyone at the Wikimedia Foundation. I never has a wikimedia email until I
became a fellow!

I also have completely different goals as a fellow versus my goals as a
Wikipedian in residence (two times). Exploring ways to close the gender gap
versus working for the specific mission of a cultural institution to share
their contents with a broader audience are pretty different and the same could
be said about other fellows/residence.

Just my two cents as the only fellow thus far to also be a Wikipedian in
residence! :-)

The goals are the almost the same.

Hi,

while it is great that you do this responsibly, I am indeed also wondering
how we can make this a worth while read. Because while it is a nice
program, there are many other people around Wiki World doing similarly cool
things (no offence) - as are "real" staff members. By splitting this off in
a seperate news section (as we have been splitting off a lot) I'm afraid
you might be putting the news actually on a bigger distance than you would
otherwise.
