[Wikimedia-l] The latest news from the Movement Strategy Process

2019-03-01 Thread Nicole Ebber
Dear fellow Wikimedians,

We have some “hot off the press” updates from the Movement Strategy Process
Wikimedia 2030:

== What are the working groups currently doing? ==

Members of the nine working groups
[1]
are busy analyzing their thematic area, exploring how it could evolve by
2030 and finalizing their set of guiding questions. The answers to these
questions will form the basis of recommendations for structural changes
that will enable the movement to successfully and strongly advance in in
our Strategic Direction.

The groups are working in the area of Advocacy, Capacity Building,
Community Health, Diversity, Partnerships, Product and Technology, Resource
Allocation, Revenue Streams, as well as Roles and Responsibilities. Each
group is looking to have a first draft of their questions ready by the
beginning of March. These drafts will then be refined and reworked in the
run up to the Wikimedia Summit
[2] at the end
of March.

== A recap of the in-person working groups' meeting in Berlin ==

In February, three working groups (Roles and Responsibilities, Revenue
Streams, and Resource Allocation) met in person
[3]
at the Wikimedia Deutschland offices in Berlin. They worked (almost)
non-stop for three days, and came out with a set of guiding questions that
they are now refining.

== The Movement Strategy Process at the Wikimedia Summit ==

Our process will take center stage at the Wikimedia Summit
[2] (March 29 to
31 in Berlin), with representatives from the nine working groups presenting
their work so far and engaging with Affiliates, the Wikimedia Foundation
and its committees on what the next steps will be.

== How can you get involved? Join our community conversation! ==

What are the questions we are seeking answers to? How can the broader
community contribute to the structural changes? Prepare to take part in our
community conversations to find out! This will happen in March on the Meta-Wiki
page [3],
on several language wikis, and also via survey. In this online
conversation, you will be able to offer your insight and feedback on the
guiding questions.

== What’s next? ==

It is all systems go in the Movement Strategy Process. Alongside providing
support to all the working groups, the core team is currently on the search
for Strategy Liaisons
[4]
to act as the point of contact between the Working Groups and the Arabic,
Farsi, French, German, Hindi, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, and Portuguese
communities. We are also looking for representatives from organized groups
[5]
to become liaisons with the strategy process. And we have just added a
Community Relations Specialist to our team, who will work with the
community liaisons and ensure an effective dialogue.

Please reach out to us with any questions or comments you might have.

All the best,

Nicole

[Wikimedia-l] Fwd: Fake news ‘vaccine’: online game may ‘inoculate’ by simulating propaganda tactics

2018-02-21 Thread James Salsman
Here is a good example of instructional software to solve a systemic
communication issue:

https://www.getbadnews.com/

Ref.: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/02/180220093555.htm

How can we sustain progress towards resolution of the issues?

Also, does the date by which Titan is likely to be colonized correlate
with the extent to which progress has been achieved? This is not the
first time I have asked this question here, and I hope the answer is
as clear to everyone else as it is to me: it correlates inversely.

I wonder if the Foundation could afford to have David Attenborough
narrate the interaction between Cambridge Analytica and Cambridge
University. They would if they'd start investing in unskimmable
endowment funds. Make donors' money work hard, with a screening for
sustainability.

Bring back the regular email to donors suggesting other organizations
worthy of their money, and tell them how to avoid being skimmed by
high frequency traders, too, please.

Best regards,
Jim

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Sharing sad news about Bassel

2017-08-03 Thread Gregory Varnum
A complete statement from the Wikimedia Foundation, made by Katherine, has been
posted on the Wikimedia Blog:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/08/03/bassel-khartabil/

We are also asking for people’s assistance with translating this message into
other languages given the global impact of these events:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Free_Bassel/Wikimedia_Foundation_mourns_the_loss_of_Bassel_Khartabil

The plan is to make additional information about the Foundation’s efforts to
honor Bassel’s contributions and values will be available during Wikimania.

I want to join Katherine and others on this list in offering my personal
condolences to all impacted by this tragic outcome.

[Wikimedia-l] Sharing sad news about Bassel

2017-08-01 Thread Katherine Maher
Dear all,

I am very deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of our fellow
community member Bassel Khartabil, also known to some as Bassel Safadi.

Bassel was detained on March 15, 2012 amid arrests on the one-year
anniversary of the Syrian uprising. He had been missing since October 2015,
when he was removed from the Syrian prison where he was being held. His
wife, Noura, confirmed earlier today in a statement on Facebook that he was
executed by the Syrian government shortly after his disappearance.

Bassel was a leader, advocate, and member of so many open culture
communities it is difficult to do them all justice. In addition to his
contributions to Wikimedia, he was project lead and public affiliate for
Creative Commons Syria, a member of the Global Voices community, a free
software advocate and contributor to Mozilla, and much more. The European
Parliament statement on his detention credited him with “opening up the
Internet in Syria and vastly extending online access and knowledge to the
Syrian people."[1] He was known for his boundless enthusiasm and passion,
always encouraging others to share, create, and connect with a better world
around them.

Many of you cared deeply about Bassel, working to raise awareness of his
detention and disappearance. Please know that his friends and family knew
of and appreciated these efforts, both as a voice on his behalf and a
reminder of the values of the communities to which he devoted his time and
attention. I personally am grappling with profound anger and sorrow that
someone so brilliant, humane, and generous should be taken in this way. For
those who did not know Bassel, you can learn more about his life and work
at his article [2], and at https://freebassel.org.

The Wikimedia Foundation will publish a statement soon, and ask for your
support in helping us translate that message to share more broadly. We will
also work to find a way to celebrate Bassel’s life and honor his
contributions at Wikimania next week.

Yours, sadly,

Katherine

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Very good news!

2017-02-20 Thread WereSpielChequers
Hi Milos, You might want to read this signpost article from 2015
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2015-08-26/In_focus>
that talked about the rally in very active editors from EN wiki's 2014
nadir. Another interesting measure of the rally, *Time between ten million
edits * <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Time_Between_Edits>was
hitting 73 days in late 2014 and is now back down to about 60.

Of course what we don't know is how much of the perceived decline was down
to the edit filters and therefore how much of the increase in the last
couple of years is simply because the easy wins for edit filters have been
achieved; Or how much of the decline was due to the rise of smartphones and
tablets where Wikipedia is much more of a broadcast medium with
comparatively few editors.

Some additional links:

Compare total editors per project (deduplicated)
Caveat: only exists for active editors (5+ per month), not for very active
editors (100+ edits per month)
https://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/ProjectTrendsEditors.html

Here is a table with total monthly editors for all Wikimedia wikis combined
(deduplicated)
https://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/TablesWikimediaAllProjects_AllMonths.htm
and charts showing columns active editors 5+ and very active editors 100+ from
that table.

As for causes, WereSpielCheckers wrote an essay in 2013:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:WereSpielChequers/Going_off_the_boil%3F
and also did an 'In Focus' for Signpost in 2015:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2015-08-26/In_focus

As for edits, instead of editors:
On English Wikipedia monthly edits by registered users is visibly higher in
2015 and 2016 than in 2013 and 2014
https://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/PlotEditsEN.png (blue line)
BTW way anonymous and bot edits are also higher than their low point in
preceding years, but these metrics don't count for active editors trends.
For similar charts for other Wikipedias see

You should compare the whole platforms. That's because bilingualism is
increasing in many countries but not in the same direction. For example Italian
students foreign language skills drastically increased over the last 10 years,
so they edit also on English wikipedia. It's not sure that the opposite occurs.
It's the same with emigration. Many 25-30 years old PhD students and Postdoc
leave Italy and move to other countries. If that area is for example UK (a very
common destination) they start to edit enwikipedia. This could happen also in
France, whilst many of them have to learn German or Dutch or Swedish and it
takes more time.
I "study" flow of users from platform, you can see when I leave welcome message
or propose autopatrolled flag here and there and they are most probably
asymmetrical at the moment.
If someone is interested, there are some way to try to sample this flows in an
objective way. Happy to share with you.

In short, it seems that we reached the bottom in participation in 2014 and that
we are now slowly going upwards.

My claim is based on the analysis [1] of the Eric Zachte's participation
statistics on English Wikipedia [2], but I am almost sure that the rest of the
projects more or less mirror it. But, anyway, I encourage others to check other
projects and other relevant factors and see if their results correlate with
what I have found. The reasons for the change in trends should be also detected.

If we are looking Eric's statistics from 2010 onwards, it is not immediately
obvious if we are going up or down. We reached the peak in
2007 (German Wikipedia somewhat earlier, other projects later, but English
Wikipedia is approximately 50% of our activity and its weight is too strong for
other projects to balance our overall activity).
After that peak, we went down as quickly as we reached the peak. Then, in 2010,
the trends flattened.

However, it was not a stagnation, but barely visible recession.
However, that "barely visible recession" removed approximately 20% of the very
active editors in the period from 2010 to 2014, while the "visible one" -- from
2007 to 2010 -- was also approximately 20%. At that point of time, in 2014, the
next 10 years would for sure drive Wikipedia and Wikimedia movement into
insignificance.

Comparing such data is also tricky. It's not just necessary to compare the same
months (January 2010 with January 2011, 2012 etc.), but there could be "freak"
months, which are not following general trends.

That's why I used two methods: One is coloring the months by place in
comparison to the months of the previous years. The other is average number per
year.

There are at least a couple of important conclusions:

1) Negative trends have been reversed.

2) Both 2015 and 2016 were not just better than 2013 and 2014, but even better
than 2012, while 2016 is just a little bit worse than 2011!

to see that and, finally, I've seen it!

In short, it seems that we reached the bottom in participation in 2014
and that we are now slowly going upwards.

My claim is based on the analysis [1] of the Eric Zachte's
participation statistics on English Wikipedia [2], but I am almost
sure that the rest of the projects more or less mirror it. But,
anyway, I encourage others to check other projects and other relevant
factors and see if their results correlate with what I have found. The
reasons for the change in trends should be also detected.

If we are looking Eric's statistics from 2010 onwards, it is not
immediately obvious if we are going up or down. We reached the peak in
2007 (German Wikipedia somewhat earlier, other projects later, but
English Wikipedia is approximately 50% of our activity and its weight
is too strong for other projects to balance our overall activity).
After that peak, we went down as quickly as we reached the peak. Then,
in 2010, the trends flattened.

However, it was not a stagnation, but barely visible recession.
However, that "barely visible recession" removed approximately 20% of
the very active editors in the period from 2010 to 2014, while the
"visible one" -- from 2007 to 2010 -- was also approximately 20%. At
that point of time, in 2014, the next 10 years would for sure drive
Wikipedia and Wikimedia movement into insignificance.

Comparing such data is also tricky. It's not just necessary to compare
the same months (January 2010 with January 2011, 2012 etc.), but there
could be "freak" months, which are not following general trends.

That's why I used two methods: One is coloring the months by place in
comparison to the months of the previous years. The other is average
number per year.

There are at least a couple of important conclusions:

1) Negative trends have been reversed.

2) Both 2015 and 2016 were not just better than 2013 and 2014, but
even better than 2012, while 2016 is just a little bit worse than
2011!

3) December 2016 was even better than December 2010!

4) I could guess that the period June-November 2016 was worse than the
same period in 2015 because of the political turbulence. Without them
-- as May and December 2016 likely show -- 2016 would be not just
better, but much better than 2015 and maybe even better than 2010.

I would say that the reversal is still fragile and that we should do
whatever we've been doing the last two years. Yes, detecting what
we've been doing good (or bad) is not that easy to detect. But, yes,
better analysis of all of all of the processes should be definitely
done.

I hope that this shows that we are at the beginning of our
Renaissance, Wikimedia Renaissance and that the Dark Wikimedia Age is
behind us! So, please join me in enjoying that fact, even I could be
wrong. It definitely sounds definitely amazing, even it could be just
my imagination! :)

Larry Sanger's attempted crowdsourced Wikinews, Infobitt, is dead -
the name infobitt.net no longer resolves (though the domain is still

It died sometime after June 23, the date of the last screenshot on the

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki maps news and updates

2016-03-14 Thread Yuri Astrakhan
The quest to bring maps to Wikipedia continues:
* Kartographer has launched for WikiVoyage
* Julien Girault will help maps with his UI expertise
* Talk to us at the FreeNode IRC channel #wikipedia-interactive

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Kartographer

Last week we enabled Kartographer extension for Wikivoyage sites, allowing
users to add maps to wiki pages without any additional wmflabs and
JavaScript tricks. Now you can simply add a or to a
wiki page, or even use the Visual Editor to insert a map. Additionally, you
can:

* add markers and polygons visually
* edit geojson and see how it changes the map on each keystroke
* add auto-numbered markers (either numbers or letters), and have multiple
counters
* have multiple "groups" of markers/polygons and showing them on the same
map or on separate maps (e.g. all food and all drink maps and one combined
map)
* markers can be of any color, 3 sizes, and contain many different icons
* markers and polygons can be clicked and will show popups with wiki text
and images
* very fast full screen popup map

Feedback: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Maps
Bugs & TODOs: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/kartographer/
All maps-related tasks: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/maps/

== What's next? ==
There will be plenty of cleanup and polishing work to make Kartographer
work seamlessly. We will need to address the missing functionality reported
to us by the community, and help migrate existing wmflabs-based maps to the
new platform. Lastly, VE editing will need some more work to become
indispensable.

Yet, our site is still set on the bigger target - maps for all of
Wikipedia. For that we are waiting for more hardware, plus we will need to
improve our static maps service to be able to handle wiki-load.

Hardware task: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T125126

Thank you Max Semenik, Ed Sanders, Alex Kosiaris, Brandon Black, Chris
Koerner, Chris Steipp, Tomasz Finc, and Wes Moran for making this possible.

User:Jackson Peebles is no longer with us, he passed away in late

encouraging civility, and [obsessively] reviewing recent changes.

Jackson was a Teahouse host, an instructor in the Education Program,
and the lead on a Video Tutorials Project through the WMF. User:Go
Phightins! originaly adopted Jackson but he went on to run his own
adoption school and facilitated a Western Michigan University course
himself. Among his userboxes he said, This user is not a Wikipedia

nation invited to represent the US at the International Red Cross and
Red Crescent’s Global Youth Conference in Vienna in 2012.

Jackson had recently proposed a WMF Individual Engagment Grant called

very sorely missed and I wish his family all the best during these tough
