2018-06-07 Thread Maria Cruz
Hi everyone,

As you may know, we recently funded 11 projects through Wikimedia
Foundation Project Grants program, initiatives that span from software
development, to online organizing, and offline outreach. In an effort to
increase awareness about these projects, and foster collaboration and
participation, we are hosting the first ever Wikimedia Project Showcase
this coming Thursday, June 13, at 9 am PST (1600 UTC).

You can join the showcase in one of two ways:

   - Join the video conference room using BlueJeans:
   https://bluejeans.com/570420589
   - watch the showcase online via Youtube following this link:
   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFjo8wg4wKw

Each participant will have 5 minutes to present about their project, share
why it matters, and how others can get involved. If you would like to
contribute your skills to a project, help out, or simply learn more about
the awesome work our communities are doing, please join us at the Wikimedia
Project Showcase next Thursday!

Looking forward to seeing many of you there,

María and Marti

What a great panel of funded projects! I feel like the project grant proposals
get better every year.

Congratulations to our latest project grantees! You join (or re-join as the
case may be) a group of distinguished individuals who have pioneered paths
forward for the Wikimedia movement.

[Wikimedia-l] Project Grants program will fund 11 community-led projects

2018-05-18 Thread Marti Johnson
*Hi all,In the latest round of Project Grants, the committee has
recommended 11 projects for a total of $354,654 in funding. We received 24
proposals for review. Here’s what we’re funding. [1]Software: four
projects funded - ScienceSource
: Medical
knowledge is accessed over 2 billion times a year on Wikimedia projects,
but only a relatively small number of editors create and maintain it.
ScienceSource seeks to build an algorithm that will model editor
decision-making to identify reliable biomedical reference sources. By using
machine automation to sift through large volumes of reference materials,
ScienceSource will support volunteers to do their work faster and more
effectively. [2] - WikiProject X
:
WikiProject X seeks to create better tools for Wikipedian editors
collaborating around common interest areas. Previously funded
 twice through
Individual Engagement Grants, the project piloted new features for several
WikiProjects, including Women in Red
. This
grant will replace the multiple disparate modules of WikiProject X with a
new extension, CollaborationKit. This improvement will offer editors a
more seamless, adaptable interface to for productive collaboration.
[3][4][5]. - Timeless: Post-deployment support
:
Timeless is a new volunteer-developed skin designed for editors. It was
deployed across all Wikimedia projects in 2017, but lacked sufficient
support to address bugs. This grant will support general improvements to
make Timeless into a more stable and user-friendly product. [6] -
WikidataJS :
This grant will enable the JavaScript developer community to produce fast,
high quality tools so others can better access information on Wikidata. The
project builds on Maxlath
’s previous
creation of several Wikidata-related tools: wikidata-sdk, wikidata-edit,
wikidata-cli, wikidata-filter. [7][8]Online organizing: two projects
funded - Wiki Loves Monuments international team/2018 coordination
:
The international coordination team for Wiki Loves Monuments
 (WLM)
proposes to strengthen the foundation for healthy and sustainable WLM
competitions across the world. As the project celebrates its 10th
anniversary, its leaders aim to critically rethink the structural framework
of WLM. This grant will support efforts to gather information from
national leaders, collect and share best practices from across the
community, facilitate the ongoing integration of WLM into Wikidata, and
improve operational processes system-wide. [9][10] - Wikimedia CEE Spring
2018
:
This annual international article writing contest generates content from
every country and region in Central and Eastern Europe on 30+ Wikipedias.
CEE Spring’s remarkable community spirit plays a central role in fostering
a thriving, collaborative volunteer base in the region. The grant will
incentivize content creation focused on closing the gender gap, expanding
minority language Wikipedias, and showcasing the cultural heritage of
Central and Eastern Europe. [11]Offline outreach: five projects funded -
BlackLunchTable/BLT 2018
:
 As an organization, BlackLunchTable
seeks to create a more truthful and inclusive historical account by
inviting people to write the histories of their own culture. In this
project, they will host a series of edit-a-thons with the aim of recruiting
editors of color and women editors to write biographical articles about
notable artists of the African diaspora. The project will primarily focus
on English Wikipedia. [12][13] - Wiki In Africa/Wiki Loves Women 2018
:
In 2016, Wiki Loves Women
 launched in
West Africa in an effort to address the content gap about women in Africa.
This project continues the Wiki Loves Women initiative and expands into two
new countries in East Africa -- Tanzania and Uganda. The project seeks to
raise women’s visibility on Wikipedia, create structural supports for the
development of Wikimedia groups, and encourage women’s participation as
leaders, partners, and editors. [14][15] - New Zealand Wikipedian at Large

[Wikimedia-l] Project Grants program will fund 11 community-led projects

2017-12-18 Thread Marti Johnson
Hi all,

In the latest round of Project Grants, 26 proposals were submitted for
review. The committee has recommended 11 projects for a total of $321,010
in funding. WMF has now approved all 11 grants. Here’s what we’re funding.
[1]

Software: seven projects funded

   -

   Nigerian keyboard project
   :
At present, Wikimedian editors working in Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo have to
cut and paste vowels simply to write sentences in their own languages.
This project will support new keyboard layout software to improve editing
experience, allow for searches of Wikipedia articles, and contribute to the
development of an internet culture in these languages. [2]

   -

Feature improvements to Wikimedia Programs & Events Dashboard

:
The Programs and Events Dashboard is the global Wikimedian community’s
platform to organize projects like edit-a-thons and education programs,
tracking all contributions by participants. This grant project will build
specific new features and improve known shortcomings of the tool. Among
other improvements, it will extend access to the Dashboard by enhancing
   usability on mobile devices. [3]

   -

   Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory (WCDO)

:
The content of each language edition of Wikipedia is skewed toward the
cultural and geographic context associated with its own language. WCDO
aims to correct this underrepresentation, providing focused data and
strategic recommendations for cross-language collaboration so that each
language edition will have a truly international representation of the
   world’s knowledge. [4]

   -

   WikiInAfrica/WikiFundi
   :
Wikifundi expands the Kiwix offline reader experience to include an
offline editing platform and a suite of training tools that allow educators
to adopt the Wikipedia in the classroom program in schools without reliable
internet access. These improvements greatly expand the territory of this
important educational initiative which teaches critical skills like
research, digital and information literacy, and collaboration while
training a new generation of Wikipedia readers and editors. [5]
   -

   Kiwix/User Experience
   :
Though Kiwix is a widely used tool for bringing Wikimedia projects to
areas with limited or nonexistent internet access, its desktop version has
become increasingly buggy as the software has deprecated. This project
will revamp the user experience and architecture so that Kiwix can continue
to serve users around the world for years to come. [6]

   -

   Soweego :
Based out of the University of Trento, the highly trained soweego team
will create a fully automatic robot that syncs giant volumes of external
information with Wikidata. This robot will directly connect Wikidata with
a variety of large, reliable knowledge databases, so that Wikidata can
serve as centralized, structured repository of open data. [7]

   -

   LinguaLibre
   :
For the past two years, LinguaLibre has been facilitating recordings of
pronunciation audio files and encourage contributions in minority languages
into Wikimedia projects. This project will extend the impact of this
successful project by improving user experience and storing rich and
linguistically useful metadata using the Wikibase software. [8]

Online organizing: one project funded

   -

   Community toolkit for Greater Diversity

:
A team of experienced Wikimedians will develop tailored online and offline
training modules to equip veteran volunteers to create a more inclusive,
diverse editing community on Indic language Wikipedias. The project aims
to design and develop a community toolkit for recruiting, onboarding and
retaining editors from underrepresented demographics. [9]

Offline outreach: three projects funded

   -

   Les Classes Wikipedia (Wikipedia Classroom)

:
This project will continue a successful pilot program in Abidjan, Côte
d’Ivoire. Teens and young adults will be trained to create and improve
Wikipedia articles, focusing on the 100 most notable Ivorian writers. [10]

   -

   Les sans pagEs
