[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year 2019 competition is now open

2020-03-17 Thread Steinsplitter Wiki via Wikimedia-l
Dear Wikimedians,

We are happy to announce that the 2019 Picture of the Year competition is now
open.

The Commons Picture of the Year is a competition that was first run in 2006.
It aims to identify the best freely licensed images from those that during the
year have been awarded Featured picture status. This is the fourteenth edition
of POTY.

Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on
Commons (FP) during the year 2019, to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international
Wikimedia Commons community. From professional animal and plant shots to
breathtaking panoramas and historically relevant images, Commons features
pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories.

Two rounds of voting will be held:

  * In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The
first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the
final.

  * In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must
decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To vote, you must be an established Wikimedia user with more than 75 edits
before January 1, 2020.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2019 page on Wikimedia
Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:POTY/2019/VOTE

Round 1 begins on 8 March 2020, 15:00 and ends on 22 March 2020, 23:59:59 [UTC]
Round 2 begins on 5 April 2020, 15:00 and ends on 19 April 2020, 23:59:59 [UTC]

Thanks,

POTY 2019 committee

The necessary part was the "[b7e99e43] Exception Caught" and "[97b50521]
Exception Caught". That allows me to look up the exception in the logfiles
on the server to see details as to what exactly is causing it.

Let's have further discussion in Phabricator.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Commons

2015-08-31 Thread Eduardo Testart
Hi All,

I was reviwing this thread, and I have had several problems uploading some
files from the National Library of Chile (150 to 200 MB files). The first
problem with the chunck upload system is that it showed to me the following
error **. I entered on
preferences and turned on the option for chunk upload.

This has been (partially?) adressed in the following Phabricator thread:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/*T94562*, but I believe hasn't been fixed.

After receiving the prior error message, I opted to use the following
workaround: http://tools.wmflabs.org/url2commons/index.html, which worked
sometimes, and others, specially for the bigger files has given me the
error: *ERROR: null*

I do not know what is creating this errors (I am uploading PDF's), but it
would be really nice if someone could either check it up to see if it can
be fixed (my best guess would be that is has to do somehaow with the
Mediawiki software), or be kind to explain me which method could be another
simple and easy workaround (since I couldn't figure out how to use the
bigChunkedUpload.js).

Thanks a lot!

Step 1 would be for you to report the entire error message you're
receiving. In particular, the error message will begin with something like
"[0badf00d] Exception Caught:", that and the date and time you received the
error will allow people with access to the logs to look up details on the
error.

For the "url2commons" tool, you'd do best to talk with the maintainer of
that tool.

Brad,

The error is just a message in the fourth step of uploading in the Upload
Wizard, I do not know how to get alog from it. As described
 by waldyrious before me:

(description, license, categories, etc) and at the final step (publishing),

So, I do not know how to provide a log for you. What should I do?

Best!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Commons mobile app

2015-05-16 Thread Lodewijk
Hi Fsn,

not wanting to second guess or anything, but will the functionality (being
able to upload something easily from mobile, especially using campaign
infrastructures - and ideally connectable with other tools so that photo
competitions can use it) become available in another way?

Best,
Lodewijk

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Commons mobile app

2015-05-16 Thread Dan Garry
This post from the thread last month might shed some light on the problems
with mobile uploads:
https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mobile-l/2015-April/008986.html

The short answer is that the teams that were Mobile Apps and Mobile Web are
now part of the broader Readership Department, so won't be working on
anything related to mobile uploads. There is a Multimedia Team
https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Staff_and_contractors#Multimedia in
the Editing Department. I'd suggest speaking to them about it.

The longer answer is that I think campaign proposals should be holistic. If
the campaign wants to make mobile uploads a priority, then the campaign
should not rely on some other subunit of the movement doing a total change
in priorities to accommodate that. That's just not very realistic.

A simple little app, managed by the organisers of the campaign, to upload
images for a specific campaign seems like a much better approach to this
problem. Image uploading functionality is available over our APIs, which
are open and well documented, so it's perfectly doable. You'll have a
pretty easy time finding app developers looking for work; the number of
people in the world who develop apps is much, much higher than the number
of people who develop MediaWiki extensions. It needn't be a mobile app
either; one could easily make a little web app that uses the API that's
hosted in Labs if you prefer. You could budget for app development that in
whatever budgeting requests you make to support the campaign, then you're
the one that's in total control of it. This is *exactly* why we make our
APIs totally open, so that people can do this kind of thing!

That said, these are just my opinions as a person who leads product
development teams at the Wikimedia Foundation. I am not an authority on how
the grantmaking system works or should work. :-)
