Re: [Wikimedia-l] Message to readers from the Wikimedia Foundation regarding COVID-19

2020-03-19 Thread Tito Dutta
Like Lane, I also could saw the content security error, anyway... I looked
at the Meta-Wiki translate page to understand the template.

I completely agree that Wikimedians, specially WikiMed team and volunteers
are doing excellent work on Wikipedia and other projects. Other than
(English Wikipedia), I personally really liked the Wikidata WikiProject (
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_COVID-19), and
especially the Wikivoyage article (
https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%932020_coronavirus_pandemic)

About the banner (I am reading from the Meta-Wiki page)
" Wikipedia will remain online and available for anyone who needs a trusted
source of unbiased information." and "
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_pandemic >> Add a
full link to the Wikipedia article in the respective language to the
translation."
-- Perhaps it is also good to note the Wikipedia Medical Disclaimer (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Medical_disclaimer) which says: "
Wikipedia contains articles on many medical topics; however, *no warranty*
is made that any of the articles are accurate..." or General disclaimers (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:General_disclaimer). The
possibility remains that in some languages information are not up-to-date,
or fully accurate.

Again it is really good to see extra-ordinary effort by Wikimedians who are
working in this area on different Wikimedia projects.

Thanks

Hello

Worth it if someone also took the time to craft us a message to relay on

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Message to readers from the Wikimedia Foundation regarding COVID-19

2020-03-19 Thread Paulo Santos Perneta
Please don't use the "coronavirus pandemic" misnomer, at least in the
version in Portuguese.
"Coronavirus" is a group of virus, not the disease. It's proper name is
COVID-19. Using that misnomer is akin as calling "retrovirus epidemic" to
AIDS, and fertile ground for all kinds of fake news, such as the
"coronavirus" interferons from Cuba and ppl caughting unrelated
"coronavirus" (such as MERS-CoV) and using that to spread panic.
We've already enough "coronavirus" disinformation around without that
banner.

Thanks,
Paulo

Hi!

Thanks for the invitation.

In the part that says "We are proving that, even in a time of social
distancing, we can celebrate our human bond by coming together online to
share our knowledge and experiences.", the word "experiences" - is it more
like "life experiences, such as travel, raising kids, etc.", or more like
"knowledge acquired from practical work"? The translation would be
different in the languages I know.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Message to readers from the Wikimedia Foundation regarding COVID-19

2020-03-19 Thread Joseph Seddon
Hey Lane,

That's just a warning by centralnotice in preview that it's detecting an
external script. Nothing to worry about!

[Wikimedia-l] Message to readers from the Wikimedia Foundation regarding COVID-19

2020-03-19 Thread Joseph Seddon
Dear list,

Given the unfolding global events, the Wikimedia Foundations feels it is
important to reassure readers across the globe.

We'll be displaying a short message at the top of the projects reaffirming
our commitment to keep Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects online, open
and free for all. Readers often turn to Wikipedia for neutral information
in times of stress. This is a critical moment for students who can't go to
school, people who have to stay home with their families, and anyone who
needs a trusted source of unbiased information.

We also want to take a moment to acknowledge the invaluable work of all the
medical contributors on Wikipedia. Thank you for keeping a close watch and
keeping misinformation at bay. Coronavirus topics have received tens of
thousands of edits by thousands of editors since the start of the pandemic.
The article has been read more than 30 million times, in English alone.

The message will be displayed just once to readers, and you can preview the
banner [1]. The draft is in English but we want this message to be
multilingual. If you have a moment, please help translate this banner into
your language [2]. Thank you all, for your work and efforts.

Stay safe, and wash your hands!
