Please join us for a special full-day event on
*THE FUTURE OF THE OPEN WEB*
to be held at
*THE WEB CONFERENCE*
in San Francisco on May 16, 2019.

https://www2019.thewebconf.org/event-future-open-web

The Web has seen tremendous growth thanks to some of the technical and
social decisions that were made in the Web’s formation. Many of these
decisions reflect public, cooperative principles—an Open Web—rather than a
network that is exclusive, walled, private, and proprietary. However, many
questions about the governance and state of the Web have shifted or
remained unanswered over time. In this conversation, we will ask what the
future of the Web should say about our values, what our values should say
about the future of the Web, and how our hopes for an ideal Web of the
future might pan out in practice.

An exciting line-up of speakers already bodes well for the discussion (and
more speakers will be announced soon):

   - Lawrence Lessig (Harvard University)
   - Marietje Schaake (Member of European Parliament)
   - Brewster Kahle (Internet Archive)
   - Nadia Eghbal (Protocol Labs)
   - Tim Smith (CERN)
   - Alexandra Elbakyan (SciHub)
   - Adam Knight (University of Oxford)
   - Jan Gerlach (Wikimedia Foundation)

As a reminder, the early-bird registration deadline for The Web Conference
is coming up soon -- on March 6 -- so get your tickets soon!

Hi all,

I wanted to pass along an opportunity that I saw earlier today via Twitter:
https://medium.com/read-write-participate/work-in-the-open-
with-mozilla-1410be0a83b2

It sets up people working on "open projects that support a healthy
Internet" with a mentor, a cohort of like-minded people from all over the
world, and a trip to Mozfest, which is a London-based open Internet
conference I've attended/presented at in past years and found really
mind-expanding due to the cross-disciplinary conversations that take place.

You can see previous projects here: https://mozilla.github.
io/leadership-training/round-3/projects/ — it looks like there's quite a
broad cross-section and many of the projects across the movement might be
applicable. The post notes participants will learn about "best practices
for project setup and communication, tools for collaboration, community
building, and running events."

Thank you to Leila for suggesting I pass this along to this listserv. Feel
free to share it broadly.

To: WikimediaAnnounce-l

Dear Wikimedians,

Three months ago, we welcomed many of you in Berlin to work, discuss and
get inspired at the Wikimedia Conference 2017. We have now published our
extensive and colorful grant report for this event, and you can read it on
Meta:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2017/Report

In the meantime, the documentation of all sessions is complete. Check it
out on Meta as well:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2017/Documentation

While preparing the report, we have also written three learning patterns to
capture and share our experiences with other movement event organizers.

1) “Timing, Communication, Preparation: How to support your event
participants in the best way to get a Schengen Visa”

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Learning_patterns/Timing,
_Communication,_Preparation:_How_to_support_your_event_
participants_in_the_best_way_to_get_a_Schengen_Visa

2) “Briefing calls with speakers: A simple way to improve conference
sessions”

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Learning_patterns/
Briefing_calls_with_speakers:_A_simple_way_to_improve_conference_sessions

3) “The Buddy Project: Let’s make your conference more newbie friendly!”

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Learning_patterns/The_
Buddy_Project:_Let%E2%80%99s_make_your_conference_more_newbie_friendly!

And if you think, “wow, that’s a lot!”: David Saroyan, Visiting Wikimedian
at Wikimedia Deutschland from January until April, wrote a blog post about
his experience in the Wikimedia blog:

https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/06/30/why-i-visiting-wikimedian/

We would like to thank all participants, partners, affiliates and experts
who have contributed to making this such a great event, and the Wikimedia
Foundation for their generous support.

Thank you,

Happy reading,

Cornelius, Nicole, Daniela and Wenke
(the WMCON team)

PS: Stay tuned for our upcoming announcement of the Wikimedia Conference
2018 dates.

Edit-a-thon
To: g...@lists.wikimedia.org

Hi everyone,

We are once again in the process of co-organizing the international
Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thons and we are writing to solicit your
participation. This could take the form of forwarding this call onto folks
you think would want to organize an event; sharing info about the project
on your social media channels; organizing your own edit-a-thon; or any
other way you can think to spread the word. Any and all participation is
greatly appreciated!

--

*Call for Participation: 4th Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, March,
2017*
DON’T AGONIZE, ORGANIZE! The award winning, record breaking Art+Feminism
Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is happening this March. Join us again or organize
for the first time to improve Wikipedia and affirm the importance of the
arts and intersectional feminisms. It matters more than ever as we face a
post-fact world, and what may follow. Email us at i...@artandfeminism.org to
learn more about organizing an event.

WHY?
Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify
as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the
practical effect of the disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of
female participation. Established in 2014, Art+Feminism Wikipedia
Edit-a-thon is a response to the gender gap in content and participation on
Wikipedia.

As the lead co-organizers of Art+Feminism, we’ve been deeply disturbed by
the sheer amount of fake news on social media, and its influence on the
recent US election. We believe this makes our work even more pressing. Now
more than ever we must gather together to improve Wikipedia and affirm work
of women, people of color, immigrants, the LGBTQIA+ community and other
marginalized peoples.

HOW?
Hold an Edit-a-thon at your local university, artist run center, museum,
community center, etc! Art+Feminism Edit-a-thons address content and
participation gaps by inviting people of all gender identities and
expressions to gather for communal updating of Wikipedia entries related to
art and feminism. The leadership collective supports Edit-a-thon organizers
by: providing an organizer’s kit
 with suggested workflow,
promotional and training materials, and more; funding to defray the costs
of refreshments and childcare; and training and support.

WHEN?
The 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at The Museum of Modern Art,
New York will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2017. Node events are
welcome to hold their event on this day or any other date in March, 2017
that makes sense for your community. To learn more and get involved,
contact the lead co-organizers via email: i...@artandfeminism.org.

Hello US Wikimedians,

Here is a link to the Doodle poll to help us schedule this month's
Wikimedia United States Coalition meeting: http://doodle.com/poll/
kgy38bftyekrwg6h

You are welcome to add items to the meeting agenda at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WALRUS/November_2016#Agenda

Please note that:

* Thanksgiving Day is November 24th. Mindful of the high proportion of US
residents who have Thanksgiving celebrations, I omitted November 24th from
the list of options for this month's meeting.

* One of the agenda items for our November meeting will be to discuss
whether to have a December meeting, keeping in mind that many people take
time away from their regular activities in late December and early January.
If we decide not to meet in December, then this November meeting will be
our last for 2016 and the next meeting will be scheduled in January 2017.

people have started marking their calendars. Where was this WMF event

the May meeting of US Wikimedians. (Canadians are welcome to join if they

Hi folks,

Hi folks,

In an effort to make scheduling easier for everyone, I set up an unofficial
public calendar for US Wikimedia events:
http://localendar.com/public/Wikimedia_US

Nice features:

* You can add events as you wish, which will appear on the public calendar
once an admin approves the posts. Feel free to add events from local
affiliates. Please note the location of each event *in the name of the
event*. If an event is online/virtual, you can say "online".

* You can click on an event, which will create a popup that will let you
export the event to your choice of calendar formats.

There's no obligation to post events here, but I hope that this tool will
be convenient for everyone. This is an experiment and comments are welcome.

[Wikimedia-SF] SF travel to OpenStreetMap conference in Seattle

2016-03-02 Thread Pine W
San Francisco folks,

Regarding OSM US conference in Seattle this year, I'd like to encourage
those who would like to travel to the conference from SF, which I hope will
include one or more WMF staff, to think about traveling as a group. Group
travel and/or lodging may reduce the total costs for the group, which I
hope would make WMF budget managers and the TPS Grant program staff be more
likely to approve financial support for your visit.

I hope to see you in Seattle!

[Wikimedia-SF] Fwd: [opensource-107] Seattle to host the 2016 OpenStreetMap State of the Map US Conference

2016-03-02 Thread Pine W
(Cross-posting)

For Wikimedia folks who are interested in possible collaborations with OSM,
now seems like a good time to start thinking about possible presentations.

Staff from the Wikimedia Foundation, and/or Wikimedia volunteers from
around the US outside of the Seattle area, may want to start thinking about
travel plans.

For Wikimedia volunteers outside of Cascadia Wikimedians territory, you
might consider applying for WMF Travel and Participation Support grants [1].

If you're inside of Cascadia Wikimedians territory and would like to attend
the conference, we may have funds in our budget that can support your
attendance. Contact me off-list for details.

Pine

I am excited to announce that Seattle was chosen to host the OpenStreetMap
2016 State of the Map US Conference. The conference will take place July
23-25 on SeattleU's campus. We chose SeattleU for their low cost, proximity
to Seattle and access to public transit. The food trucks near by didn't
hurt either.

We are looking for help! Let us know if you want to help. Request for
presentation proposals should be coming fairly soon. Start thinking about
what you want to present or teach.

[Wikimedia-SF] Lightning talks on January 16!

2015-12-26 Thread Pine W
Hi all,

San Francisco has filled the slots, tentatively, for the 25 minute talks on
January 16

However, we still need lightning talks! Pharos has proposed that
Wikimedians introduce themselves and their proudest article:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Events/Hello_Wikipedia_-_My_Proudest_Article

My guess is that these introductions will take less than a full hour, so if
you are interested in a lightning talk (roughly 2 to 5 minutes in length),
please sign up at the bottom of this page so that we can have lightning
talks as time allows:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Events/West_Coast

Suggestions for topics:
1. Your personal goals for 2016
2. What do you like about Wikipedia?
3. How can Wikipedia be better?
4. Wikipedia's relationship with ___
5. Successful projects
6. Current or recent research, technical developments, or outreach
activities

Thanks,

[Wikimedia-SF] Doodle poll: scheduling for Wikipedia 15 celebration mini-conference

2015-11-29 Thread Pine W
Hi California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia (and possibly
elsewhere in the US for those interested):

Please indicate your preferences regarding the scheduling of a one day (or
partial day) celebration and mini-conference for Wikipedia's 15th birthday
in January 2016. The current plan is to have the event in multiple physical
locations via Google Hangouts.

Possible meetup locations (still to be determined) for concurrent online
participation:

* WMF office in San Francisco, CA
* Oregon Health and Science University, Portland, OR
* University of Washington, Seattle, WA

Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Unconference on Wikipedia Day weekend

Ok. Please look at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Events/List

Do the 2 events look ok?

We can adjust as needed.

Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Anybody out there

2014-06-23 Thread Pine W
Edit-a-thons are handy for those who want to share resources like physical
books, want someone to help them with research or translation, enjoy
editing collaboratively, or want to teach people how to edit. What I have
heard is that they are most effective when targeted at a specific theme
like arts, feminism, or cultural heritage.

I am suggesting that those people who want to promote these sorts of
in-person Editathons, might consider finding ways to encourage people to
 come who wouldn't without encouragement.

Otherwise, just like the vast majority of user groups have died out over
the past twenty years, these look like the same fate.

Some people like to sit in cafes while they work alone, others prefer
to be alone at home. Same with editing. Some people like to do it in
 company, others not.

Speaking of editing in company, I would love to find an informal but
pleasing venue where people can stop in, have a beer, and join others
who are editing, without having to organize something more formal.
Although I find value in holding editing sessions in the local
libraries, it can be hard to book the rooms, and once there the
environment is a bit sterile. I'm in Berkeley and there are some cafes
that have wifi, coffee, beer, and food. Is anyone else interested in a
kind of Wednesday nights at xx or something like that?

Maybe someone needs to post pictures and reviews and so on to encourage

  Hello,
this is the lamest mailing list I ever subscribed to and probably the
wikimedian meetup group with the highest moment of inertia compared to
its size (I know physics is not on my side here, but thats OK it never
really is) I have been part of.
Don't get me wrong I know that anyone I met so far in this Community
does some amazing and impressive projects inside and outside of the
wikimedia universe. And I realize that the fourth dimension is the most
limited and that hanging out with other people at Edithatons has to be
weighted against this other projects. But there is also statistics if it
would take the amount of Editors from more than 7 million Inhabitants to
make a event every other month nothing would ever take place in Germany.
For instance Stephen LaPorte proposed a meetup next saturday a
Edithathon at the Foundation (Stephen is that dead already?) and no one
even looked at the Page. The Wicnik is 2 weeks away and there is some
interest but neither place nor food wich are at least in my opinion some
  important part of an Picknick.
OK enough Rant back to you Silence.
