Dear all, the Wikimedia Foundation offers several programs to individuals, groups, associations and Wikimedia chapters to fund travel costs, projects or complete annual plans.
Since a few days I am a member of the "Grant Advisory Committee", abbreviatory "GAC", and I'd like to take this as an opportunity to shortly present which support programs at the Wikimedia Foundation exist and what the GAC does. There are four different support programs: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Start Individual Engagement Grants (IEG): * for individuals and teams up to four persons * project support up to 30.000 USD * submit project description, budget planning etc. * two rounds per year, currently requests can be submitted until September 30th * evaluation by the community and the IEG Committee (community members) * decision by WMF staff https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG Travel and Participation Support (PS): * for individuals * travel support for participation at NON-Wikimedia events * submit rationale and budget, describe the benefit for the Wikimedia movement * requests can be submitted at any time * evaluation by the PS Committee (PSC, staff of WMF, WMDE and WMCH), 1 week * decision by WMF staff https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Participation:Support Project and Event Grants ("Grants"): * for individuals, teams or non-profit organisations (which includes Wikimedia Chapters, as long as they are not funded by FDC) * project support starting at 500 USD, no maximum * submit project description, budget planning, success criteria etc. * requests can be submitted at any time * evaluation by the community and the GAC (community members), 2 weeks * decision by WMF staff https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Index Annual Plan Grants ("FDC"): * for recognized Wikimedia entities * extensive eligibilty requirements (at least last two finance and annual reports published in english, at least two successful grants or fundraisers conducted, Letter of Intent, among others) * funding of annual plans (less own ressources / external funding) * submit detailed annual plan and project plan for the relating year * two rounds per year, currently requests can be submitted until October 1st * evaluation by the community (1 month), WMF staff (6 weeks) as well as the FDC (members of community, WMF and chapters, 2 months) * decision by the WMF board https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/FDC_portal All four support programs require reporting. The reporting requirements are dependant on the program. Grants require one report after the end of the project including a break-down of expenses and the budget, performance measurement etc. The FDC requires quarterly reports including finance and project reports.
