Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Contribute campaign
Hi Salmaan, I will share my ideas soon. But, please consider using non-hindi / devanagri styled english fonts for indic promotion drives. We are tired seeing this Hindi = India thing everywhere. Please consider that many of the south indian languages have very active wiki communities. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Malayalam Wiktionary in use
Good Work Malayalam Wiktionarians. Some Tamil developers are interested in creating a downloadable dictionary based on Wiktionary. The use could be tremendous in mobile phones. If anyone is interested we can get connected. Ravi ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l

Yes, we should probably rotate various fonts to cover different writing systems. Can someone take a shot at the font used in http://indiagirl35.bloxode.com/images/122486701453.jpeg That would reflect the curved glyphs of Tamil and Malayalam, plus Telugu and Kannada to an extent. - Sundar That language is an instrument of human reason, and not merely a medium for the expression of thought, is a truth generally admitted. - George Boole, quoted in Iverson's Turing Award Lecture From: Ravishankar ravidre...@gmail.com To: wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Sent: Tue, November 23, 2010 2:21:12 PM Subject: Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Contribute campaign Hi Salmaan, I will share my ideas soon. Sundar, need not search for dravidian looking fonts :) just don't project devanagiri looking fonts alone :) any aesthetic english font is fine. Ravi ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l

Hoi, The best proof that Hindi is not doing well comparatively is that the Fundraiser messages has been localised in Malayalam and nothing has been done for the Hindi messages. As proof of the pudding is in the eating, it is the south of India where the Wikimedia movement is most vibrant. Given that the WMF always supports what is likely to do well, the south is at this moment its best bet. Ravi, If we were to do away with the stereotyping of India, one good way is to rotate different styles from different cultures. It would be really nice to showcase the variety in India. If that would be too much trouble, I agree that a neutral message can be preferred. - Sundar That language is an instrument of human reason, and not merely a medium for the expression of thought, is a truth generally admitted. - George Boole, quoted in Iverson's Turing Award Lecture From: Ravishankar ravidre...@gmail.com To: wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Sent: Tue, November 23, 2010 2:50:22 PM Subject: Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Contribute campaign Sundar, need not search for dravidian looking fonts :) just don't project devanagiri looking fonts alone :) any aesthetic english font is fine. Hoi, I just learned that Erik has created a special version of the traffic statistics for India. http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN_India/TablesPageViewsMonthly.htm When I look at the numbers, I do not understand why Malayalam is doing so poorly. It is not that it has a limited number of viewers, it is that it has gone down so much. This is also true for other Wikipedias. What is happening and, more importantly what can be done about it ??? This is invaluable - thank you Erik, and thanks Gerard for bringing it to attention. Erik, I know that you report geographic trends on EN on the main stats page, is there any way you can easily and comprehensibly integrate India edits and readership to EN on the India page? That would be very helpful, esp. as it probably dominates all other Indian languages currently (and since English is an official Indian language too). Also, Shiju has been putting out India stats for some time now, and (Shiju) perhaps you can share/integrate what you do, in terms of depth, article quality and editorship with this information - perhaps you can have a conversation with Erik about this.
