People may not know the IP address from the venue before they start

Just setup a page where such IPs can be put up and a bot checks them
every 1-2 hours or so and enables IPs for 3-4 days. Authorisations for
specific users who are co-ordinating the event can be given well in
advance to add such IP entries.

That will help reduce communication and delay due to time zone related
 things.

This will be the best approach. Pradeep and Pranav (Kundan and I were
present, among others) had faced exactly this problem at the first attempt
to run the WikiAcademy in Mumbai. For a newbie academy, it is at least an
hour or so before one gets around to talking about setting up new accounts.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Article Feedback Tool v5 : Indian Perspective

2011-12-21 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
All,

Some of you might have followed the recent improvement with Artcle Feedback
Tool v5 (AFTv5) , for those who didnt please read[1]. Even before reading
the entire page, something struck me. The design is strangely synonymous
with Indian comment boards. I strongly feel, having this on India articles
will generate more trash than any feedback and 100x load more on editors to
cut the junk, moderate etc. If you are not familiar with Indian message
boards, please read[2] (That was a very tough RS to catch which is self
mocking given the site's reputation!). AFTv5 is looking for feedback, I
hope this thread can give some constructive feedback given the list
audience's familiarity with Indian message boards.

PS : Am also poking Oliver Keyes to follow this thread.

I suggest to keep it as Rs.100, Rs.500, Rs.1000...

Since those figures are shown as sample amount, meaningful figures like
100/250/500/100 will serve the purpose.

Dear all,
In an effort to reduce the traffic on the India list and keep all our
discussions regarding WLM-IN 2012 in one place, we thought it would be
great to have a separate list: wlm...@lists.wmnederland.nl. It is being

enough to suggest this idea and get the list made.
I invite you all interested in starting and contributing to discussions

 https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Pune_Hackathon_Feb_2012

A Wikimedia hackathon is a chance to learn how to develop using
MediaWiki, Phonegap, and our other technologies, and to work alongside
experts. Software engineers, designers, and translators are welcome.
We're tentatively planning to focus on internationalisation and
localisation, mobile and offline Wikipedia access, and the gadgets
framework. I aim to get more details in the next two weeks.

If you're interested, please leave your name and your email address, or
a link to your user page, on that event page. (A real registration
 system is coming soon.) Thanks!

And please feel free to publicize this elsewhere. I've heard that, when
marketing, you have to get the message to the recipient three times in
three different ways before you have a good chance they've noticed it.
So if you need something to help get the word out -- a sample
tweet/dent, a leaflet, etc. -- let me know.

 Thanks!

The registration page (to request an invitation to attend) is now open.

Hi Srikanth,

determining the signal/noise ratio on different types of articles is
exactly part of the current evaluation. Please see:

Importantly,
* these free text comments aren't yet visible through the site; we're
collecting them for the initial analysis;
* if we find that we get a reasonable amount of actionable, useful

filtering/managing those comments is precisely the next item on the
agenda.

Some ideas on how that could work (very preliminary) are here, and

[Wikimediaindia-l] Android ICS support for Tamil and Indic languages

2011-12-21 Thread Ravishankar
Hi,

I did some testing on how the recently released Android ICS supports Indic
languages.

*Tamil, Bengali, Marathi and Hindi are the only Indian languages supported
for now*. Oh ya, it can also show English well without a problem ;)

You can view the findings in details at

http://microblog.ravidreams.net/2011/12/android-ics-support-for-tamil-indic-languages/

Screen shots with description can be found at

https://picasaweb.google.com/115896376016313561916/AndroidICSSupportForIndicLanguages?authuser=0feat=directlink#

I could not view the web fonts in Kannada, Telugu Wikipedias as Gerard has
indicated at

http://ultimategerardm.blogspot.com/2011/12/new-android.html

Please let me know if I have to configure anything.

One major To Do for all Indic Wiki projects:

The mobile version homepage of most of the Indic Wikipedias is not showing
anything except the search box. Please configure this well. You can see
ta.m.wikipedia.org for example.

By the way, Android ICS supports Tamil, Bengali, Marathi and Hindi even

I wouldn't say supported. Language support generally includes:

- display/rendering
- input
- keyboard layouts
- fonts
- spellcheckers
- dictionaries

Not all those checkboxes can be completely ticked when it comes to
Bengali for the 4.0.3 release. I still see rendering issues with
regards to spaces between conjuncts and so forth.

Only few years before even PCs supported all of these and it will take more
years to get this in all gadgets. So, the only expectation now is to at
least display the characters well. Input is the next priority which can be
solved by 3rd party apps for time being once the display issue is solved.

 - spellcheckers
 - dictionaries

We don't have reliable and exhaustive solutions for these yet even in PC.
Only some online dictionaries and alpha level spell checkers for browsers
are available in FOSS.
