[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2022 postponed

2022-01-22 Thread Jayanta Nath
Hello,
We want to give you an update related to Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2022.
Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2022 (or WMWM2022) was to be conducted on 18 to 20
February 2022, and is postponed now.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Wikimeet_India_2022
Currently we are seeing a new wave of the pandemic that is affecting many
people around. Although WMWM is an online event, it has multiple
preparation components such as submission, registration, RfC etc which
require community involvements.
We feel this may not be the best time for extensive community engagement.
We have also received similar requests from Wikimedians around us.
Following this observation, please note that we are postponing the event,
and the new dates will be informed on the mailing list and on the event
page.
Although the main WMWM is postponed, we may conduct a couple of brief
calls/meets (similar to Stay Safe Stay Connected call) on the mentioned
date, if things go well.
We'll also get back to you about updates related to WMWM once the situation
is better.

Stay safe,

Jayanta Nath

[Wikimediaindia-l] Re: Research : Need assessment for Indic language Wikisource

2021-11-22 Thread Jayanta Nath
Dear Ashwin Sir,

Thank you very much for your feedback on the Wikisource study, and our
apologies for the delayed response. The study is definitely an attempt to
map the needs of Indian language Wikisource projects, particularly in terms
of prevailing gaps in technical infrastructure, and we hope it will capture
some of the aspects you have mentioned. The research is meant to inform
ongoing and future efforts to address these gaps as well. While the present
study is a pilot with a small focus group of three languages, we will
surely look into ways of engaging other communities soon, and how this may
help eventually upscale some of these efforts.

Thanks,

Jayanta

[Wikimediaindia-l] Re: Research : Need assessment for Indic language Wikisource

2021-11-01 Thread Jayanta Nath
Dear Balaji,
Thanks for your query regarding the Wikisource research project. We have
tried to elaborate on some of the motivations and need for this research in
the context section of the note; based on experience with Wikisource
projects and conversations with community members we understand that there
are persistent challenges on these platforms, particularly in terms of
technical infrastructure and capacity/skills, but these are not documented
or analysed in detail yet. Our attempt here is to collect more data on
these challenges by talking to community members and identifying gaps and
areas for improvement. The final outcome will be a report with a set of
observations which may help inform and structure further efforts in
developing such infrastructure, as well as focused capacity-building and
training efforts.

Jayanta Nath

CIS-A2K has initiated a short-term pilot research project called *Study on
Infrastructural Needs of Indian Language Wikisource Projects*, to collect
baseline data on the challenges and needs of Wikisource projects in India.
We would like to invite you to share your valuable feedback on the research
design. For more details on this, including the objective and process, you
may see:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Research/Study_on_Infrastructural_Needs_of_Indian_Language_Wikisource_Projects

We request you to kindly give your feedback on the following points which
would be very useful to refine the study before we commence our research
work:

1. Are the objectives of the research clear?
2. What do you think of the process outlined for this research?
3. Kindly give us your general opinion/suggestions/comments about this
study.

For any queries, kindly reply to this thread, or write to
sn...@cis-india.org.

Best,
Jayanta Nath

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikisource Android Apps

2021-10-19 Thread Jayanta Nath
Greetings All,

We are happy to announce that the CIS-A2K team have been initiated to
develop the Wikisource Android apps for Wikisource reader. Over the last
couple of months, a group of devs from the Tamil language community have
been putting together an Android Wikisource App for us. They have been
finished their POC of the app. In the coming month, we will engage some
developers to develop iOS apps for the same. We think it's finally gotten
to a good state for people to start hacking on it.
For those just wanting to get started here are the links Initial code:
https://github.com/ViluppuramGLUG/WikisourceApp feature ideas landing page:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Apps How can you help?
In the coming month, we may help to do the following ... * Fork the code
and help us with open bug requests * Critique the code and suggest a
cleanup * Start to hack on new features UI. * Localization for the user
interface
Also, you may comment/suggest/feedback our meta talk page

[Wikimediaindia-l] Indic Wikisource meetup at Wikimania Unconforence : 14th August 2021 - 7:30 PM (IST)

2021-08-17 Thread Jayanta Nath
Hello all,

I have booked an Indic Wikisource Meetup at Wikimania Unconference
 on 14th August
7:30 PM (IST).

The tables in the Unconference can only accommodate 20 people max. So, if
there are enough interested Indic Wikisourcers, multiple tables can also be
booked for a given period of time, but the inherent structure of the Remo
platform will prevent inter-table interaction among participants, which is
the only disadvantage.

So I would request that Indic Wikisource admins and active proofreaders or
who are willing to participate in Indic wikisource proofread-thon, please
join this meetup. This will fulfill two things.

1) Participate Wikimania 2021
2) Resolve any queries about Indic wikisource proofread-thon 2021 ( Main
Topic)

[Wikimediaindia-l] CIS-A2K graphic designer and associate positions application deadline extended

2020-05-12 Thread Jayanta Nath
Hello,
Hope this email finds you well. Some time ago, we informed you about this
opportunity. We are extending the deadline of applying for graphic
designers position till 24 May 2020:
https://cis-india.org/jobs/programme-associate-graphic-designer We are
adding the option for remote working for experienced candidates.

The communication associates position application is open until 20 May
2020: https://cis-india.org/jobs/programme-associate-communications and
similarly, we are adding an option of remote work for experienced
candidates.

If you have applied already you don't need to apply again, unless you want
to make major changes in the application.
We have got a couple of questions, and it is to clarify, because of ongoing
COVID-19 pandemic face-to-face interview is not possible currently or in
the near future.
You might have seen our email related to movement resources
needs-assessment. We believe that these two positions are going to play
important in the activity.
Thanks.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Indic language Wikisource Skill Share

2020-04-08 Thread Jayanta Nath
Hi Indian Wikisource Community,

As COVID-19 has forced the Wikimedia communities to stay at home and like
many other affiliates, CIS-A2K has decided to suspend all offline
activities till 15th September 2020 (or till further notice).I present to
you for an online training session for future coming months

1. Wikisource Skill Share,[1] a capacity-building initiative, where Indic
Wikisource contributors, both newcomers and experienced, can share
knowledge and skills with each other and clear confusions. Most of the
time, it will be done online on 1:1 basis, so it is just the right time to
participate there if you have not planned to do it or done it already.
Let's learn Wikisource together! I would like to invite experienced Indic
Wikisource contributors and sign your name at Willing to respond section
[2]. Newcomer or any Indic Wikisource contributors are welcome to join the
session with your queries and doubts.

2. Intensive Personalized Training (or IPT),[3] this also a
capacity-building initiative, where Indic Wikisource contributors,
especially newcomers could come with his/her queries and doubts. I, myself
will share my knowledge and skills with each contributor and clear
confusions. It will be done online on a 1:1 basis, so it is just the right
time to participate there if you have not planned to do so.

3. Online Proofread-edithon for all 12 Indic Wikisource language projects.
We are planning for an indic level online proofreadthon from 1 May 2020 to
10 May 2020. The book of the subject will be the classical literature of
your languages. We’ll share details about this in a separate email in a
couple of days.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Indic Wikisource Community Consultation 2018

2018-11-24 Thread Jayanta Nath
Hello Indic Wikimedians,

A Community Consultation on Indic Wikisource will take place on 24-25
November in Kolkata. Pre-event session is on 23 November early evening.

The objectives of the consultation are:

   1. Share views and preferences on the most effective ways to pursue our
shared vision of creating and sharing free knowledge in India and in the
Indian languages (including English Wikisource) around the world through
   Indic Wikisource Project.
   2. Attempt to come to agreement on a roadmap for a future where our
resources are better utilized, our volunteers are better served, and
progress on our mission is more steadily attained.

In summary, the current state of affairs in supporting the growth, health,
and motivation of Wikisource volunteers in India leaves much to be desired.
Recently, some specific developments in Google OCR, have led us to decide
we should attempt to facilitate, and hopefully rebuild, a *shared vision* for
the future of Wikisource work in India. We intend to be open to any of a *wide
range* of possible futures, with both formal and informal ways to create
shared identity and purpose.

We have selected and invited *one potential* active volunteer from each
Indic Wikisource language Community.Focusing on *active contributors* with
(ideally) a longer track record, to maximize the amount of experience and
context in the room while retaining the legitimacy that can only come from
including active contributors. That said, we *did* one active contributors.

Please see the event page here:
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Indic_Wikisource_Community_Consultation_2018>*

Note: We will organize Community Consultation/Workshop programme on each
Indic language Wikisource community in coming month. If you are interested
to do the same for your Wikisource language community, please let me know
and mail me at jaya...@cis-india.org

Thanks
