Rather, I'd say, instead of not going public with this, if it gets too
frequent, go public. Display a banner on top of Wiki stating that if
 you see
ads on Wikipedia that is not at all related to Wiki, rather you should
 check
your system for malware. The point is people should not assume, that
  Wikipedia has started ads.

I don't think the enwp community will agree to acknowledge the malware

putting up a worldwide banner. Most of our users don't face this

The only effective resolution would be when Google and MS agree to patch

 Hello

Was there a wiki session in mumbai recently ?? Five (or more) ACC requests
from an IP address have made. And they (one/two of them) had dropped all
the request assuming It was from a single user. So I request all of you to
leave a note at any ACC Tool Admin
 http://toolserver.org/~acc/statistics.php?page=Users#Admin (List) or come
 to IRC http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=wikipedia-en-accounts during
the requests. Usually they don't drop if the requests are from different
E-mail IDs and it passes other checks. But to avoid confusion it's better
 to be cautious.

I don't know whether these requests were made during a wiki event or not.
Just thought It could be an undeclared wiki session by any wikipedian.

For all those who have conducted (or thought about) outreach sessions, do
these sound familiar? I've been talking to a whole host of community
members and participating in outreach session and I wanted to share some
thoughts with you and to ask your help and advice. I'm a new mail thread

post on GLAM - and specfically the point that GLAM and outreach
 should inter-linked.)

*Most of us believe that we need to attract more newbies to our projects
to help our Indic projects grow and to improve Indian content on English
Wikipedia. I also think that many would agree that not enough outreach is
happening and that results from the outreach that is happening can be
improved. I suspect that a lot more people might be interested in doing
outreach but are often not sure how to do it. I think that we need to
figure out what are all the various things we can do to make sure that
every minute spent by volunteers on outreach is as productive as
 possible. *

I would like to propose that I start working on these aspects. My current
(very initial) thinking is as follows:

1. Speak to as many more community members as possible who have
conducted outreach sessions, plan to conduct them or even attended session
and learn from them their experiences on outreach. Document and share tips
and best practices to the entire community.
2. Create a repository for all presentations as well as handouts, FAQs
pages, etc. (prepared in English to begin with, but later translated to
Indic languages). These presentations must be in distinct module so that
there could be a standard basic introduction section, editing basics and
then separate sections for specific sub-topics such as NPOV, referencing,
WP:MOS, etc. These could be accessed at will by any community member and
used / edited / adapted at will by them. I realise there might be some
duplication because a lot of this exists in various places

 Friends.

Tamil Wikipedia announced a Media Contest to increase the commons

To upload the photos there are two ways available so far.

 1. The web based upload wizard
 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard

 2. Java based upload tool - Commonist
 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Tools/Commonist

We have to provide a detailed filename and description to the images
 for uploading.

When we have a bunch of photos to upload, we have to select them,
crop, or edit them before uploading.

Found that that GThumb Image Viewer can show the files, edit the
files and add IPTC tags to the images.

We can view, edit, delete, rotate, crop and add the required Description
 and Title to the images
 for uploading to wikimedia commons.

 How to upload the files?
 There are two tools already.
But, I wanted to plugin to any image viewer to upload to wikimedia
 commons directly.
No image viewer has that plugin.

DigiKam has it, but due to some issues, the mediawiki plugin is not
 released.

So, I started to write my own script for uploading all the files in a
 folder to upload to mediawiki.

 Here is it.

Usage details are available in INSTALL and README files.

Thanks for the wikipedia users Surya and Sodabottle for their valuable
 suggestions.

Please report if there are any issues.

Provide your suggestions for improving too.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: People of stature unhappy with own articles

2011-11-30 Thread Philippe Beaudette
Hi folks,

Sue forwarded me this thread.

The best way to get people like that taken care of is through the email
response team - there's a group of really wonderful volunteers who would
love to help out in cases like that.

You can have the person write to info-e...@wikimedia.org (that's info,
english, quality) and the email response team will take it from there.

If there's one that's particularly bad, you might want to send it my way
and I'll try to find just the right volunteer for them, but on the whole,
the email response team is AMAZING.

info-e...@wikimedia.org.

:)

 Hiya,

Me and a couple of others have been contacted by a couple of people of
stature having Wikipedia articles about themselves recently about the
articles having derogatory and inaccurate information about them. Is there
any procedure set which such people can follow to have an admin look into
their page?

Kind Regards,

Yes there is. direct them to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:AUTOPROB#Problems_in_an_article_about_you

But they shouldn't be expecting wikipedia to do a whitewashing / PR fluff
job on it. Sometimes, if they are actually trying to remove negative
material about them (and there is a ton of it in RS) it leads to a
backlash and more gets added to the article. (

WhereDevilsDare,
As Bala pointed out, pages have to be neutral.
Example:Look at any Politician's page, it's always Pro-them, rarely is it
balanced.
We need to have things neutral.
If these guys get to decide what goes on their page, it'll be a Conflict of
Interest.
Even a simple controversy against a person, if added, shouldn't be removed.
Regards,

The issues were of information added without RS, biased information and
language that was encyclopedic. The issue was sorted but I thought there
may be a formal process - thanks to Soda Bottle for providing the link.

+1
This is true, but it does not mean that unproven allegations form part of
acceptable content, I think. If a person is accused, for instance, in
court, that charge may be mentioned, but not giving the impression the
charge is proven. Citations will be very important in such situations.
Since only a handful of courts in India have gone online, it may be
difficult to assert charges filed in some courts.
