Here's another S40 phone recommended by a friend in Sri Lanka.
http://mynokia2730.blogspot.com/2010/04/nokia-2730-supports-tamil-and-sinhala.html

This costs just Rs.4,200 (100 USD) and has 3G support.

2010-11-15 Thread BalaSundaraRaman
Hello Mani,

You have left out Symbian 9.1 (S60 3rd edition phones) in the table.
While they do not natively support Indic languages, there's a slightly
roundabout way to read most Indic scripts and other complex scripts.
In my Nokia N72, for instance, I've enabled "support for complex script
rendering". Opera Mini renders Indic texts as images (jpg/bmp?).
This way, I'm able to read Tamil text.

Also, contrary to popular thinking, it is the lower end phones that have better
Indic language support. Nokia 5130 (S40 v5) is one such phone with good Tamil
support. Ravishankar Ayyakkannu (User:Ravidreams) of Tamil Wikipedia has

[Wikimediaindia-l] support for Indic script

2010-11-15 Thread Mani Pande

Hello everyone,

I am trying to figure out which Indic languages are supported on different
mobile operating systems. I have created a table to map support for Indic
languages on different mobile OS, I would appreciate if you would populate the
table so we can have a clearer understanding on scripting for Indian languages.

You can find the link on the strategy wiki. Here is the link:

Thanks
Mani
