Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Subject-based books of Wikipedia content
Thank you for your response. Putting together subject-based collections aligned to specific state central boards would be extremely helpful, so any assistance you can provide would be very welcome. Even if there is no money to print books, such collections still have value for schools in electronic formats - the general Wikipedia for Schools collection (based on a UK curriculum) is popular all over the world. But we should still try to get some interest in books, too! Thanks a lot, Martin Martin A. I am a student of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER)- mohali. Presently I am in first year. I have been doing some work in the field of education for past 3 years but I was really active only in the past year. I would like to help you in chalking out a syllabus suitable for many state boards and the central boards. This attempt might work very well in english itself though publication in hindi would not be a bad idea either. However I doubt if some agency would be supporting this initiative. I can try to talk to some officials nearby but the problem is that I do not have proper credentials to represent any body. However, I will try to do whatever I can. Let me know, if I can be of some use. ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l
Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Subject-based books of Wikipedia content
hi, Some work related to this was discussed on the list earlier. Some of this work has been collated here - http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Projects:_Wikipedia_for_Schools/Indian_version. See the talk page for some backstory on this project. Ashwin Baindur (currently on vaccation) was involved in trying to make it happen. Do see if this works well? warm regards, Pradeep Mohandas On 4 September 2011 12:26, Martin A. Walker walke...@potsdam.edu wrote: Thank you for your response. Walker walke...@potsdam.edu Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Subject-based books of Wikipedia content To: wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Date: Wednesday, 31 August, 2011, 11:09 AM I'm User:Walkerma from the English Wikipedia. I've been working for some time on producing offline collections of Wikipedia content from the English Wikipedia. We're currently looking at the possibility of subject-based books (e.g., on topics such as mammals or chemistry) for schools, using an affordable local printer. Working with PediaPress I put together a taster example on chemistry, which is available here: http://pediapress.com/files/schoolbooks/chemistry.pdf though I'd like to expand it. This one is aligned to the English schools GCSE, but others could be designed around the curricula of different countries or provinces. I would see this just as a start - we would want to cover other subjects, other countries and other languages if it was successful. My questions: *Would anyone here be interested in working with me on developing this further? *Would English language books be useful in schools, or could we only use ones in Hindi, etc? *If these books are useful, does anyone here have contacts with a provincial or local ministry/board of education that might support an initiative like this?
