never knew about this white elephant. They hate me because of this
humanitarian movement that I dropped both my feet into... I paid for some
of your escapades with your girlfriends using the donors money. I was so
naive and effed up. As far as Dubai since local was too mainstream I
financed you and some of you and your girlfriends. That is for the inner
cycle and for some I have decided to donate the money since you
have never appraised the debts till now. I still have the statements till
now from equity bank and KCB bank.

I have all the records with me.the statements, withdrawals and
everything else as shocking as the next line.

I hate myself and I still love sharing free knowledge. It is the key to

Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] WMKE Financial Status

2012-10-06 Thread stephen wanjau
Hello!

I hope this finds all of you well.

I have sinned against humanity with my recent
action of being silent about the standing of the chapter.

This is owed to the fact that some members were alleging I do not have
the total sum of funds which at this stage I have to admit is the truth!!

I have failed everyone who trusted me. I hope to salvage some of that trust
and
the friendship because it makes me feel bad and sick when I sit and think
that someone somewhere is undergoing a rough time as a result of my
actions.
If anything I would want the world to be a better place for everyone.

I had previously took the stance that the funds were intact which was
the natural thing anyone would do to maintain their name in the
good books. To speak the truth, some of it is intact and in liquid form
while another chunk was used by me at my time of need as I was in a very
tight
spot and am ashamed I made a wrong decision that is haunting me now.
This was neither intended nor planned.

Chapter activity that requires financing has been getting it well until
there was an impasse recently when the per diem issue arose which
I cleared by paying the concerned parties. I have lived through a test of
my time, done a mistake, learnt my lessons and am now trying to
get my life back on track.

I am sincerely sorry for putting everyone through this.
I have had to learn this the hard way but I hope this is the first step
towards resolving the stalemate. More importantly,I hope the
lessons drawn shall assist to develop guidelines to ensure such is not
repeated anywhere else given such a situation.

Things are not working as intended for a mistake that I fully acknowledge
is on my part. I still feel I must apologize, not because this is the right
thing to do, but because I am sincerely sorry for what happened and I would
never wish that to happen again and generally to anyone else.

Advice you will share on how to handle this will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely sorry,
Stephen.

culprit-bashing, I’d rather prefer to see us utilizing this as an
opportunity to inspect ourselves and our motives. Let’s recognise that each
of us is easily tempted (granted, everyone in different domains) and let’s
rectify ourselves where we have selfish motives and don’t contribute to
 WMKE for the common good.

We have already been told that “it will be Stephen's responsibility to
return the amount”. Let the remainder of the board decide on a time-frame
for that. Only if Steve does not fulfill his responsibility, can next steps
be called for but certainly not just a couple of days after the initial
announcement of what has happened. Don’t fall into the trap of revenge and
escalation but rather concentrate on what is needful now to keep WMKE
moving towards our common goal of the sum of human knowledge being
available to every one of our fellow citizens of this planet.

His request is to have a list of articles that we want in a new ZIM

his mail was not under cc-by-sa ;)

I think what you want to do is not so simple for many technical reasons.
For example, I assume I will have to re-render all articles (old and
new), otherwise we won't have all links between old and new article
working. If I do that, the indexes links to the articles won't work
anymore... I do not have the same naming nomenclature probably than the

Thats tremendous progress Abbas!

Some things we can do in return as Wikimedia volunteers:

*Perform digital image restorations for free.

*DYK's (Did You Knows) are also a good way on Wiki to tell the world
of that unique piece of photo we have in Kenya.

*Write articles around the media files /photos

*Almost certain(since I can't speak on behalf) that the Foundation
shall put up a blog entry highlighting the donations.

*And the recent punchline by the US Archivist ,David Ferriero;

: If Wikipedia is good enough for the Archivist of the United States,
maybe it should be good enough for you.

Report: Digitization of the Kenya News Agency Archive Prepared by: Abbas
MahmoodPrepared for: Wikimedia KenyaDate: August 2, 2012Background Context

I was invited to join a digitization working group created by the Kenya News
Agency the Kenya ICT Board that was aimed at laying a strategy for the
digitization of KNA's content. Last week, the working group had our first
meeting, and my main goals were to 1) talk about non-commercial use of
content, 2) use the Aljazeera Creative Commons Repository as a case study,
and 3) learn from other stakeholders that were involved.
KNA has a repository of (mainly) photos (6,000+) related to Kenya’s history
and culture dating back to the pre-colonial era. But due to budgetary
constraints, the photos are stored in non-ideal conditions and their risk of
damage or deterioration is therefore high. Moreover, their content is
currently underutilised due the difficulty in retrieving the photos and lack
 of public awareness.
The working group has around 20 members with folks coming from different
backgrounds: studio producers, film makers, Kenya National Archives staff,
AMREF Library staff, Bank of Africa staff, Creative Commons staff, freelance
photojournalists, Ministry of Information Communication staff, Kenya ICT
 Board staff and myself.

 Summary
It was agreed that one of the potential customers of this project will be
Wikipedia; and that some of the content will be donated to Wikimedia under a
free licence. (Note that the digitized repository will be used for
commercial purposes, but we’ll get a small content donation for purposes of
 publicity and awareness).

Also, some of the photos that KNA has are caption-less or lack the relevant
metadata. It was suggested that we(the working group) explore the use of
online collaboration (such as wikis or social media) to engage with the
public and inquire about photos which don’t have known descriptions. We
therefore expect citizen engagement to help us in identifying some of the
 photos.

[We discussed lots of other issues which I have intentionally omitted since
 1) the final report is not out yet; and 2) it’s not relevant to you guys.]
 Conclusion

We are now creating a proposed roadmap on the way forward which will be
presented, next week, to the Permanent Secretary of Information
Communication, Dr. Bitange Ndemo, for final approval before we proceed with
 this project.

the Guided Museums and Monuments tour of Nairobi
3. We make them take photos with the tour guide explaining all

2012-07-03 Thread Stephen Wanjau
Hello Wikimedians!

As the talks and discussions for partnerships fair on, we also need to be
preparing in the background some tools that will be handy during the
collaborations with the institutions in question.

Such tools include but not limited to; Wikimedia commons KE licence
templates, Customized barnster awards for members who contribute to
WP:KENYA etc.

From my English understanding of the Kenya copyrights act , (since I ain't
no lawyer: ) I understand that the copyright act of Kenya has some special
provisions for local works of art and photography. You can get a copy of
the copyright act at [1].

Please Note: Am not a lawyer and I have no legal background locally and

any form of legal advise.

Have a good day.

 * Share Your Knowledge HOW - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpYmtRmPdUc
you find the videos also on Wikimedia Commons [1]

 2. it can be productive to focus on specific contents. for example you can
ask a publisher to release with the open license cc by-sa only the
biography of their authors and their book description; for an archive the
story of the institutions (often already on their website); for an NGOs
some of their promotional publications. those are contents institutions
wish to share and they have less troubles in sharing. once they get started
is easier to get more because they see how their contents are used.

 3. Public archives and museums are often the most difficult institutions
to involve in contributing to Wikipedia because - also if they understand -
they do not know who can take the decision. Often they also require a
formal agreement (which makes the collaboration even longer). it can be
useful to target also NGOs, foundations and other private institutions, to
get started and to be able to then tell the public sector hey, THEY are
 already doing it.

In most of the cases, these guys do not understand the online stuff or

At the end they will come to appreciate that it is a good thing - which it

the curator there was always confusing their institutional website with

On our meeting with another directorate of the National Museums of Kenya,
he asked whether he could find Wikipedia on Google search. the exact

*Alex*: Hello, My name is Alex and am here with my colleague Steve and we
work at Wikipedia. Wikipedia is ...blah blah blah

*Museum directorate*: Do you mean if I search Wikipedia on Google I
will find it? (Was just hilarious:)

Personally, I have not spoken to Kenya Archives about GLAM (though Abbas
did). But I think we should just go ahead and organize editathons at this

On Sunday 17th 2012 I was to meet with a friend in town who was running

Hello!

Yes, *right to access* is enshrined in the Kenyan constitution. What of how
you use the material/information that you gained access to?

For instance, photographs of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta while he was in young etc.
Yes we can access the photograph but are we allowed to use it in any way we
wish (*freely*) and for that matter upload it to commons where we will no
longer have control of what and where it will be used for illustrations or
any other purpose.

IMO, We need to know about copyright expiry of some of these works
according to the laws of Kenya, and the authors desired ways of attribution
if any to ensure we do not step on anyone’s toes.

I would be interested to know whether there is a clause or chapter in our
constitution that addresses the issue of intellectual property since it is
the supreme law of Kenya.

PS: Anyone with a soft copy can as well forward the same.

Hello Folks!

I started an article about the blasts
herehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blasts_in_Nairobion May 29, 2012
but I had been covering Nairobi only. Other Wikipedians
have raised concerns on the discussion page of the article that it should
cover all the bomb/grenade attacks in Kenya. View the discussion page
herehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Blasts_in_Nairobi

I agree that we should write articles of recent events that meet
GNGhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Gng#General_notability_guidelinesince
it is easier to find references online since they are still 'fresh'.

I am paranoid about staying or going around town nowadays yet am a local
citizen. Maybe it is probably because the Moi Avenue blast happened barely
before we left town with Alex (a Kenyan Wikimedian) after our meeting with
Kenya Railways museum guys.

I wonder what the case would be if an explosion goes of and I was in a
foreign country!

I will also be glad to introduce the Wiki-Africa

how it works to help new Wikipedia contributors learn the skill of

You can as well research for articles that interest you and ones you think

Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Offline Wikipedia: Kenyan Curriculum

2012-06-24 Thread Stephen Wanjau
Hello Nice people,

It is really reassuring when you receive that phone call from someone with
thirst for free knowledge which is the main mission of Wikimedia.

One teacher from a school that benefited from the Wikipedia for Schools
pilot that was accomplished in Mombasa, Kenya, gave a call to Bruce (Member
of WMKE) and she requested for a copy of the DVD plus the manual of how to
make the offline package functional. She had misplaced the copy we left
after the pilot and she would like a new copy to install in new computers
that the school acquired recently.

It is very satisfying to learn that someone found the package useful. I
will be sending her a copy during the week plus a manual via a courier
service since she availed the school’s mailing address.

At this point, I think it is wise for her school to partake in the story
telling tour that will be executed by Victor Grigas who will be visiting
Kenya after Wikimania.

Regards,

Stephen.

PS: Dennis, How far have you reached with the Syllabus you were working on?

 Thanks for this update, Stephen.

I'd like to encourage you guys to make progress on this work, so we can
finally prepare a new ZIM file (we'll figure out the size problem if we
have too. Probably by removing a few pictures.) and start working on
 distribution.

Are you and Deonte the only ones working on this right now?

 Hello,

From my mathematical point of view, I believe that this new set will
definitely generate more other articles into our new custom package. My
argument being, every new article we request to be added will come with its
new blue links which means more articles than what we already have in our
not yet completed compilation of topics. This blue links mean more articles!

As of now there are 500+ requested additions on [1] and if I do some
maths by assuming that each new requested article has a minimum of 10 blue
links then we are talking about 5000+ articles being added onto the SOS
version of off-line WIkipedia. *Note* that the list is still a
Work-In-Progress with more subjects to be added!

The SOS version of the offline Wikipedia is 5500 articles which means
that our new additions would not fit as an addition to the SOS version and
still be 4gb. I met Deonte today and he requested for some pages of the
Agriculture syllabus which he is working on right now. I still have the
Business Education syllabus and the C.R.E. syllabus which I secured last
 week.

[Wikimedia Kenya] Kenya National Archives and other GLAM projects

2012-06-17 Thread Stephen Wanjau
Hello Folks!

I have been physically following up on the subject of this email (together
with Abbas and Alex) for sometime now and it seems the logistics and the
speed with which these institutions are planning this are so slow that I
feel I cant wait any longer. Those of you who have worked in the Kenyan
government or for the Kenyan government definitely understand my concerns
regarding the periods that they would take to decide on such a simple thing
on what to do - probably call an AGM of the stakeholders.

In most of the cases, these guys do not understand the online stuff or even
how the internet works let alone Wikipedia (which is our work anyway). At
the end they will come to appreciate that it is a good thing - which it is
always is.There was a time when we visited the Kenya Railways museum and
the curator there was always confusing their institutional website with
Wikipedia. He thought Wikipedians job is to improve organizational
websites! we clarified and made it clear about this and on the next meeting
he was at it again!

On our meeting with another directorate of the National Museums of Kenya,
he asked whether he could find Wikipedia on Google search. the exact
conversation was as below.

*Alex*: Hello, My name is Alex and am here with my colleague Steve and we
work at Wikipedia. Wikipedia is ...blah blah blah

*Museum directorate*: Do you mean if I search Wikipedia on Google I will
 find it? (Was just hilarious:)

Personally, I have not spoken to Kenya Archives about GLAM (though Abbas
did). But I think we should just go ahead and organize editathons at this
premises and this is why.

On Sunday 17th 2012 I was to meet with a friend in town who was running
late and so I decided to part with 50 Kenyan shillings ($0.5) and enter the
premise (Kenya National Archives) just to see what it holds. Plus I did not
want to stand along the streets or sit on the benches due to the frequent
IED attacks in Nairobi. It is rich in artifacts and even books about
history of Kenya, royal visits to Kenya, Kenyatta's famous chair and to
crown it all they have a library with articles about all these treasures.
The receptionist in fact encouraged me to take photos with a camera even
before I asked for permission. She even encouraged me to become a member of
their library and I only needed to part with 200 KES for a year as
subscription to access the material plus the artifacts of course.

My question is, can't we pay for this subscription and start using the
library to write articles about Kenya now that they have offline references
there? Probably on Weekends or even weekdays depending on the time one is
free. I think the chapter can cushion the subscriptions if that would
hinder any Wikipedian from accessing the facility. The internet shall
definitely be provided.

Kenya is still dark and still in the dark continent. Can't we illuminate it
with some light..?

My thoughts.

Highlights
To: Wikimedia Translators translator...@lists.wikimedia.org

Hi,

as every month, translations are wanted for the new edition of the
Wikimedia Highlights, consisting of the most relevant information
from the Foundation's general and technical monthly reports for April,
with a short selection of other important news from the Wikimedia
movement. Please consider helping non-English-language Wikimedia
communities to stay updated on the most important WMF activities,
MediaWiki development work and other international news from the past
month, by providing a translation at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Highlights,_May_2012

For Danish, German, Finnish, French, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian
(Bokmål), Dutch, Polish, Vietnamese, Finnish, Russian, Hungarian,
Macedonian, Tamil and Turkish, it is useful to compare the earlier
translations (
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Highlights#Previous_issues
), as the Data and Trends and Financials sections contain a lot of
recurring vocabulary.

As usual, it is planned to announce the translations - i.e.those which
have been completed at that point - on the general
Wikimedia announcements list Wikimediaannounce-l, on Wednesday, June
20. Of course translations will still be welcome after that
announcement.

We are also posting the translated versions as language- and
country-targeted updates of the official Wikipedia Facebook account,
which reaches a large audience, and recently started promoting them on
other social media channels as well (e.g.
https://twitter.com/Wikimedia/status/201975842472067072 ).

Many thanks!

[Wikimedia Kenya] Wikimedia Kenya Blog

2012-06-15 Thread Stephen Wanjau
Hello nice people!

In April 2012 immediately after we Boeing-ed (or is it jet back) from
Berlin. We had awesome tweets and re-tweets
with some WMKE members about the need to have a Wikimedia Kenya blog.

See images at [1] and [2] below.

First, I endorse this idea and I hope that way we will have all our updates
and progress in what we are doing
in an elaborate manner and style. Emails are not that refined especially to
new members and to the
international community who are part of this list and the whole Wikimedia
fraternity.

Secondly, we will request to join chapters
planethttp://www.chaptersplanet.org/which aims to facilitate
information sharing about the work of
the Wikimedia chapters
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_chaptersand the Wikimedia
Foundation http://wikimediafoundation.org by aggregating their blog feeds
in one place and providing
translation services.

This way other chapters will know what we are doing and we will also get
free translation services to other languages
like Chinese now that they are building Thika road and they need to know
about Wikimedia Kenya:).
(Decided to use Chinese as an example)

For my part, it will be a part of my signature in all emails and where
necessary point to it if an email am writing
has a blog post up for clarity and further reading which I will definitely
help. See [3].

Looking forward to your feedback about this.

[Wikimedia Kenya] Website

2012-05-25 Thread Stephen Wanjau
Hello Folks,

Alex and Abbas have been doing a great job changing the structure of our
Wikimedia Kenya website which looks awesome[1] as of now. However there
various bits that still remain to be fine tuned like various imports of
templates and such stuff.

If you might notice a link like http://wikimedia.or.ke/Events is showing
that it is pointing to an external page 'Asaf's visit to Kenya' yet that
very same page is within our Wiki website. Input in that line would be
highly appreciated and is anticipated. There are definitely other
structural bits that are still been fine tuned and hopefully the site shall
be complete in due course, like importing some templates blah blah

Otherwise, I look forward to meeting all of you tomorrow, Oh! Not all but
those who have RSVP'ed to the event:)

[Wikimedia Kenya] Fwd: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikimedia UK] Welcome to the world’s first Wikipedia town

2012-05-16 Thread Stephen Wanjau
Am cross posting

-- Forwarded message -

Thanks to Chris Keating of the UK Chapter for sharing this:
http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2012/05/welcome-to-the-worlds-first-wikipedia-town/
You’ve probably heard the saying, “In theory, Wikipedia shouldn’t work, but
in practice it does.” Three of the things that contribute to make Wikipedia
work are topic-specific WikiProjects (“let’s write about a town), Wikimedia
chapters (“let’s organize throughout the United Kingdom”), and unique ideas
(“let’s use QR codes to share content”). This week these three things
successfully came together to create Monmouthpedia, “The World’s First
Wikipedia Town” in Monmouth, Wales.

The idea for Monmouthpedia began at a TEDx talk in Bristol when John
Cummings, an occasional Wikipedia editor, suggested from the audience that
the UK Chapter use QR codes to “do a whole town.” That challenge was handed
to Cummings when the Wikimedia UK chapter backed the idea. He then moved to
his home town of Monmouth where he assembled an ad hoc group of supporters
who wanted to participate, including the local County Council.

The project has taken six months of preparation, including a commitment by
the town to install a free, town-wide wi-fi network (the first of its kind
in Wales). On 19 May the entire town will be bedecked with banners
declaring Monmouth as the first Wikipedia Town in the world.

The Monmouthpedia project uses QRpedia to allow visitors to scan QR codes
that link directly to the Wikipedia article in their own language. Because
of Monmouth’s efforts to provide free wi-fi and implement QRpedia, the town
is likely the only place where a visitor can tour in Hungarian, Hindi,
Indonesian, Welsh, or numerous other Wikipedia languages using QR codes.

Much of the success of Monmouthpedia comes from its ability to capture the
imagination of the Wikipedia community, which has embraced the town
virtually. Wikipedia volunteers have contributed nearly 500 new articles in
over 25 languages, as well as videos on topics such as the historic
Chartists movement.

The project also has a long list of partners, including 200 businesses,
several universities and nearly every school and community group in the
area. Wikipedia has partnered with museums and other institutions before,
as in Derby, but in Monmouth you will see over 1,000 QR codes on every
school, every important building, and hundreds of shops. The County Council
itself has a QRpedia code in its reception that takes you to their
Wikipedia article.

Lest you think this is a passing interest, the town of Monmouth is in it
for the long haul. Many of the QRpedia codes are printed on ceramic plaques
that should last for decades. The information in articles is backed by the
Wikipedia community and will be continually improved and expanded. Physical
guides and maps will become outdated, but the Wikipedia articles will
always be able to be updated. This potential for on-site access to
up-to-date information in any language is what makes the Monmouthpedia
model so exciting.

How long can Wikipedia defy the theory and continue to deliver free
information to the planet in over 280 languages? We think the Monmouthpedia
story provides a very optimistic outlook. If you want to find out more,
visit the Monmouthpedia website and take a look at the associated articles
on Wikipedia.

 Hi BT,

Yah, the editathone never happened. We had a good quorum of around 10 guys
but unfortunately, unforeseen events at Mugo's place (the venue) left us
without a venue. We tried looking for alternatives but didn't get a
workable one so we had to abort it.

It was decided that we move the editathone to 30th but later on
suggestions of just having someone work on the list came up considering
 the
number of times we've had to postpone this. I'll have a new thread for a
 followup.

So back to WMF chapter selected seats. It's common that chapters discuss
this off list or on internal lists, do you think we can do it on this list
because I don't foresee a meetup before the 5th of July.

have till 5th of May for consensus by chapters for these seats after which

2012-04-17 Thread stephen wanjau
Hello Folks,

Hope you are doing great and bracing yourselves for this Saturday's
edittathon that shall evolve around but not limited to the subject of this
Email.

We shall cover the remaining bit of the Kenyan syllabus as a basic intro to
Wiki and later on do more editing on Wikipedia.

My proposal is we could as well engage in the April Wikification Drive (see
[1] below) but of course not limit ourselves to that as well.

The venue of the Meet up is at the environs of Upper-hill in Nairobi at
Mugo's place which is near the public Service Club.

For those who do not know how to get there please contact me off-list for
prior arrangements on how to get there.

The edittathon starts at 600PM local time and runs through the Night till
Sunday Morning.

  *What to Bring:*
*
*
1. Laptops plus the chargers of course;)

See you soon.

PS: There is an experienced Wikipedian who is in the country on a short
private visit and he tells me that he would like to be part of this
edittathon on 21st and to meet other awesome Wikipedians.

  Hi all,

It is with great pleasure for me to announce the inaugural Wikimedia
 Kenya
  board that comprises of:

  Alex Wafula
  Ann Njeri
  David Mugo
  Oscar Limoke
  Stephen Wanjau

The Board's got a diverse range of experience -- with folks working in
 the
government sector, internet industry, financial expertise and leadership
  skills.

I think that they're a good fit for our egalitarian, international,
non-profit culture. And we've got a woman on the Board, which matters to
  me
because we will have someone to relate to, when it comes to gender-gap
  issues :)

Many thanks to those who assisted in the elections process: Chris,
Branton, Cliff Oliver. And many thanks to all the nominees who took
  their
time to submit their candidature and also answer our questions.

Let's all welcome our new Board as they orient themselves in their new
  roles.

  Thanks,
  Abbas.

PS -- Note to the Board: I've forwarded your names to be added to
 Internal
Chapters Mailing Lists. I am also looking into creating your Board
  Mailing List.

 Hello Nice People,

We were adding article links that are covered in the Kenyan school

I have added a new column [2] that has the subject/category under which
the various topics fall to keep things a little bit
 organized and sortable.

The syllabus that I gave Dennis is a hard copy of around 300 pages-A4
size and having it on-line would be somehow tedious
since it will take quite some time to scan it and again it is not such a
clear copy since it is also a photocopy of the original and might end
 up illegible.

Anyone who would like to contribute to the off-line compilation of
topics can liaise with Dennis to get some pages of
the document to work on though I understand he is almost done;)

So glad this is in the pipeline! We actually just got an email from

their Ubuntu software, and their desire to include a Kenya-specific offline

I just posted on the talk page[1] referencing the way the India project
is organizing their offline effort. It might be a bit too elaborate for the
Kenya version (Requires the creation of a LOT of additional pages), but the
two pieces of it that I think are incredibly valuable:
 # the separation by category in the list of articles they are proposing
 to add, and
 # the ability for everyone to contribute rather than just one person.

I am wondering - is there a way to get the syllabus online so that way
Dennis doesn't have to do it all himself? If not, Dennis - is there a way
 we can support your efforts?

 Thanks!!

Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] The Elections Programme

2012-03-20 Thread stephen wanjau
Hello See My concerns embedded below the Email.

The team in charge of overlooking the election process managed to meet
yesterday for the first time. The team is composed of Branton, Cliff and I,
and the meet-up was aimed at brainstorming on how the upcoming election
will be conducted and to plan for all the activities that will precede the
actual election. Generally, we aim at having a free and fair election
process that will also be educative and eventful. Hence, we call for all
members to kindly come out and support this activity in a positive manner.
The different activities that we agreed on and the dates we expect them to
 be performed are stated below:

1. *Declaration of intention.* This serves as an official announcement
by a member to contest for the position of board member of WMKE. This can
be done on our official mailing list, as most of you have done, and the
last date for this activity will be on Wednesday, 21st March 2012 by
1159hours.
2. *Registration of contestants.* This will involve the determination
of whether an applicant is eligible to contest for the position of a board
member of WMKE as per the Chapter's Constitution or any other rules agreed
upon by the members. This is fully the responsibility of the electoral team
and the results are to be released on Saturday, 24th March 2012 between
noon and 1159hours.

..between noon to 1159hours.. is negative one minute if my knowledge of
time serves me right [1]. Was it supposed to be noon to 2359H..or
1159hours to noon?

Stephen.

while I will be away.

Nice job folks.

of time serves me right [1]. Was it supposed to be noon to 2359H..or
 1159hours to noon?

 Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

I'm Ivonne Kristiani from Wikimedia Indonesia. I realized that we're
going to meet in Berlin so I thought I'll contact you.
There will be a discussion of Chapter selected board of trustees and
chapters council there and I'd like to know more about it. Has
Wikimedia Kenya come to a decision of who to endorse for WMF Board of
Trustess? Have you discussed amongst yourself about the chapters
council?

Looking forward to hear from you!

Regards,
Ivonne Kristiani

Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Offline Wikipedia: Kenyan Curriculum

2012-03-06 Thread stephen wanjau
Hello Nice People,

We were adding article links that are covered in the Kenyan school syllabus
that were non existent on the SOS version and
we had none proposed for removal from the SOS version like the Indian folks
are doing. [1]

I have added a new column [2] that has the subject/category under which the
various topics fall to keep things a little bit
organized and sortable.

The syllabus that I gave Dennis is a hard copy of around 300 pages-A4 size
and having it on-line would be somehow tedious
since it will take quite some time to scan it and again it is not such a
clear copy since it is also a photocopy of the original and might end
up illegible.

Anyone who would like to contribute to the off-line compilation of topics
can liaise with Dennis to get some pages of
the document to work on though I understand he is almost done;)

Stephen

So glad this is in the pipeline! We actually just got an email from Camara
(the computer distributor) informing us of updates they have in their
Ubuntu software, and their desire to include a Kenya-specific offline
edition. So - that's a challenge! The question is - when can we get it done?

I just posted on the talk page[1] referencing the way the India project is
organizing their offline effort. It might be a bit too elaborate for the
Kenya version (Requires the creation of a LOT of additional pages), but the
two pieces of it that I think are incredibly valuable:
 # the separation by category in the list of articles they are proposing to
 add, and
 # the ability for everyone to contribute rather than just one person.

I am wondering - is there a way to get the syllabus online so that way
Dennis doesn't have to do it all himself? If not, Dennis - is there a way
 we can support your efforts?

 Thanks!!
 Jessie

Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Saturday Photo Walk

2012-02-26 Thread stephen wanjau
Hello,

Thank you Oliver for the comprehensive summary of what we accomplished
yesterday.

FYI, we managed to cover only the CBD and so Upperhill, Westlands, Mombasa
road

and some other sections didn't feel the love of wikis;)

To add onto that, for those residing in Kenya you are all aware that the
internet provider

Safaricom is having some technical issue with the internet connection. My
connection has

been intermittent yet I have selected around 200 photos that I shall upload
to commons once

this techy issue is resolved, plus I requested for an upload bot to make
the process easier which is being

compiled somewhere I hope;)

Wikis truly expressed their love for Nairobi yesterday and that’s the
beginning/continuation

of a long life relationship between wikis and Nairobi city.

During the walk we visited the Kenya Railways museums. Shock on us (Alex,
Oscar and me) as

we had never gone there and neither knew of its location but thank God
Oliver was on board and

he directed us there ;). While we were there we talked to the receptionists
and the curators who were

on duty as they showed us around. At first they thought we were just the
usual tourists but after we introduced

Wikipedia, we were welcomed to have a sit and talk about possible
collaborations. I wish coffee is not served there ;)

Am glad that the curators knew of Wikipedia and the article about the
museum where they work is a stub;(

That place is full of history and rich in culture. Aki.

   - I sat and touched the seat which the queen sat on during her Royal
   Trip to East Africa.
   - A front seat on which Roosevelt sat in front of a train on his
   Safari in Africa is there
   - The Captains sideboard salvaged from the German cruiser KONIGSBERG
which was scuttled by its crew in the Rufiji 1914-1918.
   - Claws from the man eaters of Tsavo are preserved there!
   - ……..plus so much more and more.

If anything we ran out of time. We talked over of possible collaborations
with the museum and the answer was

a big YES but the bosses were not around now that it was on a weekend. They
were contacted and notified of

our presence and intentions after which they gave their juniors the go
ahead to give us their contacts and an

appointment on the coming week.

If I compare the mere size of this museum, then I think the Kenya National
Museum is a whole new world and

this combined with other museums across the
country?___

I am currently finding out how GLAM fellowships works and how to engage
such institutions. These places have

tons of information that should be on Wikimedia.

Another Wikipedian is talking with his folk at the Kenya National Archives
about the same.

So if we engage these institutions on higher levels we might have hit the
jackpot to bring this info. Online.

All in all it was a nice sunny day.

//Stephen.

Finally, we also discussed the upcoming board elections and suggested that
these take place on March 17th (anything else would be too late – we need
to send some documents to WMF with signatures of board members, so there! –
and the next two weekends are already booked with outreaches to
Mombasa and Egerton). So, within the next 8 days, candidates to the 5
board positions (Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary and Project /
Logistics Officer) need to write up their profiles. These should be sent to
whoever will be in charge of the elections … another question which has to
 be solved soonest!

 ** **

So, let’s get cracking so that we don’t lose our newly won chapterhood!***

Hello,

I appreciate the fact that Oliver has stepped in to salvage the situation.
Your offer to assist us with this is exceedingly valued Oliver. If you will
be available on Friday to go and get that tourist permit, then that would
be perfect since the offices at the City Council remain shut on the
weekends.

PS: Mitchell, Let’s stick to the topics on the thread.

Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Photo Walk

2012-02-18 Thread stephen wanjau
Asaf, this fee is a legal fee. In fact other photo journalists pay for this
and an official receipt from the City Council of Nairobi is issued.

The KES 2600 caters for a permit to take photos within the council's
municipality for a day.

When we went there (with Oscar) we were told to pay the fee. We were
hesitant to just pay and we explained the uniqueness and non-commercial
nature of our undertaking. Since the boss who could give us a waiver was
out on a meeting. The receptionist adviced that we write an official letter
explaining the purpose of our photo walk and request for a waiver thereof.

The results of our request shall be out on Monday or Tuesday.

If we get a total waiver well and good and that's what we are hoping for.

 Hello Nice people,

Asaf, I sought some advice from a local lawyer and he adviced me it would
be wise to notify the authorites of our undertaking considering the
security status of our country courtesy of the invasion into Somalia. The
Alshabab have been threatening to bomb the city and since we are a group of
youths who shall be taking photos we might be mistaken to be counterparts
of the Alshabab looking for the best buildings to attack.

We sought advice from the OCPD Central police station today and the Urban
Development Department at the city council of Nairobi.

At the city Council of Nairobi, they advised that we are supposed to pay
a fee of KES2,600. We talked to them and they told us to write a letter to
request for a partial or full waiver since ours was not a commercial
 undertaking.

As for the OCPD, he turned us down and he told us that he was too busy to
handle our case ;( Planning to go and see him sometime this week or early
 next week.

The project is still on as scheduled for 25th February, am just working
to ensure everyone is safe and not harassed by the City Council Askaris

on the 18th as it had earlier been indicated. During our meet-up I
networked with a photographer/ blogger who was in attendance and we
dialogued about how we could make this photo walk a success in terms of the
 logistics involved.

He informed me that he had been using images from commons as yet he
never knew of the existence of a local community of Wikim(p)edians! From
what he said, we are required by law to get Press cards from the affected
ministry that deals with Journalism in Kenya, i.e. Ministry of Information
 and Communication.

Another alternative that we had been given earlier by Kaburo as we were
planning for Wikis takes Nairobi was to request for written permission from
the City Council of Nairobi. I am kind of muddled by these two opinions
because in Kenya there is freedom of panorama, one is allowed to take
photos except at such places that are marked explicitly that you are not
 supposed to take photographs.

 Freedom of Panorama in
 Kenyahttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#Kenyaas

Anyone on this list who is conversant with this, I beg to be educated/
rectified so that I can go ahead with the planning for the photo-walk.

Thats great news Oscar.

I will post the minutes to our home page here http://www.wikimedia.or.ke

I would like to suggest that we have some kind of follow ups after our
outreach talks and hands on practices at these workshops.

This shall be like a form of mentor-ship to newbies who might be stuck as
soon as we leave the premises. There is need to take them
off the ground. Most of them will definitely lose heart and leave while the
courageous and bold enough might opt to stay which is
unlikely the case.

 Oh, one crucial additional step:

 8. after creating the account, go to
http://wikimedia.or.ke/Special:UserRights, type in the user name you just
created and click Edit User Groups, then check the checkbox enabled.
This is required to let the user have write access to the wiki.

I just reviewed all existing accounts and found some of them were not
enabled. So if you couldn't edit the wiki previously, you should now be
 able to.

 Cheers,

Asaf

 Hi, folks.

Back when we created the wiki http://wikimedia.or.ke/ for the future
Wikimedia Kenya, we set Abbas and me as bureaucrats (meaning users with
administrative privileges -- among which, the ability to create users in
this closed wiki), just as a starting default.

I have now made those of you who have been active on the wiki in the past
30 days bureaucrats on the wiki as well, so that requests for new users
don't need to depend on Abbas and me. The new bureaucrats are: Oscar
Limoke, Stephen Wanjau, Oliver Stegen (Baba Tabita) and Alex Wafula.

If you feel anyone else needs bureaucrat access, let me know (or ask one
 of the new bureaucrats! :)).

However, as Spider-Man's uncle said: With great power comes great
responsibility -- so please don't fool around with the many things
bureaucrats can do, to avoid creating unnecessary work.

As a reminder, the way for bureaucrats to create new users for other
 people is:

 1. Get the new user's e-mail, and let them pick their desired username.
 2. Log in to wikimedia.or.ke with your own account
 3. Under Toolbox in the left sidebar, pick Special Pages
 4. Click Log in / Create account
 5. Click the Create an account link
 6. Type in the user's desired username and e-mail. DO NOT type in
 anything for the password.
 7. Click the by e-mail button, NOT the create account button.

An e-mail will be sent to the new user's address, with a link to complete
the registration. Then the new user can pick their own password, and the
 world is at peace.

P.S. I have created an account for Sarah Osano at her request. This is
as good an opportunity to ask one of the bureaucrats for an account on the
WMKE wiki, if you don't already have one! Be sure to specify the username
 you want.

 Cheers,

Asaf

Hello Nice People,

I would first like to congratulate me then you who in one way or the other
had a contribution to the making of the newest Wikimedia Chapter.

I have created the pad below to start populating it with stuff about our
