Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Virtual meetups

2020-05-06 Thread Owen Blacker
A semi-permanent hangout is a poor match for Zoom — it would make a great
target for Zoombombers.

That kind of space would be better suited to IRC or Slack, generally, no?

[Wikimediauk-l] British Museum makes 1.9m images available under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0

2020-04-29 Thread Owen Blacker
That it's a non-commercial licence is really disappointing, but that's
still a little better than nothing…

https://www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/2020/04/28/british-museum-makes-1-9-million-images-available-for-free/

The British Museum has revamped its online collections database, making
over 1.9 million photos of its collection available for free online under a
Creative Commons license.

Under the new agreement the majority of the 1.9 million images are being
made available for anyone to use for free under a Creative Commons 4.0
license <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/>. Users no
longer need to register to use these photographs, and can now download them
directly from the British Museum.

Under the terms of the Creative Commons license, you are free to share and
adapt the images for non-commercial use, but must include a credit to the
British Museum.

He's both a prominent person of colour and in favour of staying in the EU.

The abuse he gets online is simultaneously shocking and wholly

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd put their name in Bengali into the infobox at all,
personally. But `other_names` certainly *feels* more appropriate.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] [Scotwiki] Celtic Knot - Language Conference at the University of Edinburgh - Deadline for ideas 10th March 2017

2017-03-15 Thread Owen Blacker
Has anyone got in touch with the Comann Eachdraidh Uibhist a Tuath people
who ran a session at Mozfest last year?

I can't find a more useful URL about the session than
https://github.com/MozillaFoundation/mozfest-program-2016/issues/825 and
I've failed miserably to type up any of my notes or collate the tweets, but
they're www.ceut.scot and have a "virtual museum" and a bunch of 360
photography and VR stuff they did with support
from the University of St Andrews. I don't remember the details, but there
was a bunch of it involving Gàidhlig (oddly enough, given they're a
Hebridean organisation).

Probably worth someone getting in touch, at least.

For those interested in this proposed EU copyright change, and with

of Panorama (she gives a good 2 minute explanation of why the proposed
amendment is a great thing), while the UKIP Culture Spokesman (Peter
  Whittle) is set against.

The arguments on both sides are reasoned but slightly confused, with
some errors creeping in. However these sound-bite cases for both sides
are worth thinking through if attempting to provide MEPs with lobbying

surprised to see a Labour politician arguing to damage the UK's
current Freedom of Panorama, it feels like a future vote loser to me,
especially in the light of the ever looming UK referendum on whether
  to stay in the EU.[3]

[Wikimediauk-l] FOI request to Met over IWF / Wikipedia controversy rejected

2009-01-08 Thread Owen Blacker
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/advice_to_the_internet_watch_fou
They just responded, rejecting my request under s17(4):

In accordance with the Act, this letter represents a Refusal Notice for
this particular request under Section 17(4).

Section 17(4) of the Act provides:

(4) A public authority is not obliged to make a statement under subsection
(1)(c) or (3) if, or to the extent that, the statement would involve the
disclosure of information which would itself be exempt information.

The Metropolitan Police Service can neither confirm nor deny that it holds
the information you requested as the duty in Section 1(1)(a) of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000 does not apply, by virtue of the following
exemption:

S30(3) Investigations

The MPS will not disclose whether it has carried out an investigation, or
whether an investigation is taking place, unless that information has
already been placed in the public domain, through channels such as the
media or the court process. Nor will we confirm whether or not
correspondence has been received by a force from a third party.

Any disclosure under Freedom of Information is a release of information to
the world in general and not an individual applicant. Therefore, simply
confirming or not that such information were held would reveal which force
has and hasn't had contact with the IWF.

I don't suppose anyone has any evidence that the IWF definitely contacted a
specific police force, do they? :o)
