[Wikisource-l] Re: Reviving the Wikisource Project Conference - Seeking Volunteers!

2023-06-06 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hi NANöR and everyone,

Thank you so much for starting this thread and restarting the conversation
about a second Wikisource Conference, the first one being in 2015.

I would also like to offer my support to the Organizing Team for this
conference. I have past experience of supporting conferences like
WikiConference India 2016, in my volunteer capacity, and I was a part of
the Organizing Team which intended to organize the second Wikisource
Conference in 2020
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Conference/WCUG_Wikisource/Wikisource_Conference_2020>,
as a WMF staff member.

Thinking about the dates and venue, I believe we shall look at the upcoming
the Conference Grants rounds
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Conference>. The* first round *has
a submission deadline of *September 4, 2023* and event dates between *January
to June 2024* while the *second round* has a deadline of *February 4, 2024*
and event dates between *July to December 2024*. It might be better to
think about venues after thinking about possible dates based on the
collective capacities of the people involved.

I am happy to provide support in any way that the Organizing Team deems
appropriate. Looking forward to engaging in further conversations about the
same.

Regards
Satdeep

[Wikisource-l] Launching Wiki Rescues Manuscripts, welcoming Wikisource Technical Fellows, & October Wikisource Triage meeting

2022-10-21 Thread Satdeep Gill
Greetings Wikimedia family,
I am delighted to share *Wiki Rescues Manuscripts
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Rescues_Manuscripts>*, a
call-to-action and project to support the digitization of manuscripts on
Wikimedia platforms (Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource). The project
consists of two complementary pilots. The first pilot digitizes manuscripts
in Indonesia
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Rescues_Manuscripts#Wiki_Rescues_Manuscripts_pilot_in_Indonesia>
through a collaboration with PPIM <https://ppim.uinjkt.ac.id/>, Wikimedia
Indonesia, and other partners. The second pilot tests the viability of
Transkribus
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Rescues_Manuscripts#Transkribus_pilot>
(an AI-powered text and handwriting recognition tool) for languages that
are not yet supported by OCR (optical character recognition). We are
starting with the Balinese language because the community has already
produced the number of transcriptions that we need to create a model in
Transkribus.
I invite you to *sign-up as a Learning Partner* in the final section of the
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Rescues_Manuscripts#Learning_partners_sign-up>Meta-Wiki
page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Rescues_Manuscripts#Learning_partners_sign-up>
if
your community, affiliate, or organization is interested in digitizing
manuscripts. We would love to not only support you but also learn from you.I
am happy to share that *two Wikisource Technical Fellows (Kolawole Lawal &
Parthiv Menon)* will be contributing to the Wiki Rescues Manuscripts
project until June 2023. They will focus on meeting the technical needs of
Indonesian Wikisource communities and potentially integrating Transrkibus
into Wikimedia OCR. Here is a brief introduction from each of them:*Hi
everyone, I am Kolawole. I’m from Nigeria. I am glad to be a part of the
Wikimedia movement. I love solving software-related problems and listening
to good music. I look forward to collaborating and contributing to
Wikisource as a Technical Fellow.**Hello! I am Parthiv, a final year
undergraduate student from India. I love to read and draw, enjoy meeting
new people, exploring new places, playing sports, and (unpopular opinion)
generally not a big fan of cities. I am fluent with English, Hindi,
Gujarati and Malayalam, and can understand a couple of other South Indian
languages as well. More importantly, I am looking forward to my time here
for it surely does seem like it's going to be fun :)*Finally, I would like
to invite you all to join us for the next Wikisource Triage meeting
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Triage_meetings#October_2022_meeting>
 on *26th October 2022 at 2 PM UTC (7:30 PM IST)* where we will be
discussing the pilots and introducing Kolawale and Parthiv. Feel free to
edit the agenda directly to add further topics for the meeting. Kindly drop
me an email on sg...@wikimedia.org if you would like to be added to the
calendar invitation for the meeting.

Looking forward to meeting some of you next week. Have a great weekend!

[Wikisource-l] Potentially seeking funding for Wikisource development

2022-03-26 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello everyone,

There have been community/affiliate led efforts in the past that focus on
Wikimedia technology and also on building thematic or regional hubs.

For instance, the OpenRefine Project Grant:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/CS%26S/Structured_Data_on_Wikimedia_Commons_functionalities_in_OpenRefine

And the Language Hub grant:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/WMNO/Language_Diversity_Hub

I was wondering if Wikisource Community User Group can put up a grant
focusing on Wikisource technology and if there is a possibility for one or
more affiliates to support as fiscal sponsor(s) on this project. The grant
can focus on coordinating among Wikisource communities for prioritization
of technical long standing tasks along with new featurss and hiring a
couple of developers to work on them.

Looking forward to the members of the User Group and interested Wikimedia
affiliates for any thoughts and interest in this topic.

P.S. This topic was briefly discussed on the Telegram group and it was
suggested to move it here.

Satdeep

Thank you everyone who was able to join the conversation yesterday. Here is

   - Satdeep to reach out to Andre Klapper to learn more about
   All-and-every-wikisource workboard and to possibly rename it to just
   Wikisource. It might also be better to move Wikisource-specific projects
   (such as WS Export and ProofreadPage) to be subprojects of the main
   Wikisource one, so it's possible to view all Wikisource tasks at once.

   - It was suggested that header and footer boxes be removed from the
   ProofreadPage and including them within the text with "noinclude" tags
   might resolve some issues around find and replace and VisualEditor.

   - An idea was raised to get all Wikisource developers working together
   on a common task or tool, so that we can get to know each other more and
   also get the work done faster.

[Wikisource-l] Invitation to join the first Wikisource Triage meeting (21st March 2022)

2022-02-23 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello fellow Wikisource enthusiasts!

I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy. Sam Wilson and I are
excited to share that we will be hosting regular Wikisource Triage meetings
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Triage_meetings>, starting from
21st March 2022.

These meetings aim to foster the growth of a technical community of
Wikisource developers and contributors. The meetings will be primarily
focused on identifying, prioritizing and estimating tasks on the
All-and-every-Wikisource
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/All-and-every-Wikisource> and
ProofreadPage <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/ProofreadPage>
workboards (among others) on Phabricator and eventually reduce the backlog
of technical tasks and bugs related to Wikisource by making incremental
improvements to Wikisource infrastructure and coordinating these changes
with the Wikisource communities.

While these meetings are technology focused, non-technical Wikisource
contributors are also invited to join and share any technical challenges
that they are facing and we will help them to create phabricator tickets.
Newbie developers are also more than welcome!

The first meeting has been scheduled for 21st March 2022 at 10:30 AM UTC /
4:00 PM IST (Check your local time
<https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1647858641>). If you are interested in
joining the meeting, kindly leave a message on sg...@wikimedia.org and we
will add you to the calendar invite.

Meanwhile, feel free to check out the page on Meta-wiki
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Triage_meetings> and suggest
topics for the agenda.

Regards

Sam and Satdeep

[Wikisource-l] Just a few more days to go for the January #1Lib1Ref!

2022-01-12 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello fellow Wikimedians, librarians, and bibliophiles,

I hope you are doing alright and staying healthy in this new year. The
January round of the 2022 1Lib1Ref <https://1lib1ref.org/> starts on the
21st birthday of Wikipedia,15th January, and will run until 5th February.

I am thrilled to share that 2 more languages from the CEE region have been
added to the list of languages supported by the CitationHunt tool over the
holidays, which makes it a total of 9 new languages added for the upcoming
round of the campaign. Huge thanks for the volunteer efforts of Guilherme
Gonçalves <https://github.com/eggpi> and Gorana Gomirac
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Gorana_Gomirac_(VMRS)>.

As always, participation is pretty simple. All you need to do is add more
references to Wikipedia articles, type #1lib1ref in the Edit Summary. In
case you are a newbie and would like to learn how to add references to
Wikipedia articles, Open Foundation West Africa <https://ofwafrica.org/> is
hosting an online Citation Masterclass on 14th January at 4 PM UTC. Sign up
here <https://t.co/ViqhZiJxc7>.

If you are already familiar with editing Wikipedia and would like to
experiment a bit, we are piloting a couple of contribution methods for
advanced contributors
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Participate#Creating_new_articles_on_Wikipedia>
in the January 2022 round.

*If you are an organizer, remember to add your local events to the campaign
dashboard
<https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/campaigns/1lib1ref_january_2022/overview>,
so we can learn and track activities happening across the world.*

Check the blogpost for more information about the campaign :

See you all in a couple of days!

Maryana is hoping to learn more about the Wikisource community and the
project at this event and it would be really nice if you can share your
answers to the following questions:

   - What motivates you to contribute to Wikisource?

   - What makes the Wikisource community special?

   - What are the major challenges facing the movement going forward?

   - What are your questions to Maryana?

You can share your responses during the live event but in case the date and
the time doesn't work for you, you can share your responses on the event
page on Wikisource

infrastructure related development in the past year. A lot of which was
done by the Community Tech team at the WMF, Grantees funded by the WMF or
through projects like Google Summer of Code. We would like to understand
what you feel about all of these different features and tools, be it the
Wikisource Pagelist Widget or the new Ebook Export tool?

We would like to take a little time to fill in this not so long survey. You
can take the survey in English
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1DOM1bMB2eFAz_Wfh8k6WT903NWWKIzHBbY6S-yoq-QI/edit>,
Spanish <https://forms.gle/n91HW6W3C8D1z1T8A>, Polish

or Punjabi
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1eSV0taEMJ9WTFUdcXFwXRYAgzMD72bkAuiJfk3nhSkI/edit>.
(In an ideal world, the survey would be available in all the Wikisource
languages, sadly we couldn't do it for this survey. We will try to be more
inclusive in the future.)

P.S. This survey will be conducted via a third-party service, which may
subject it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and
data-handling, see the survey privacy statement (English

and Punjabi

P.P.S. If you have any questions or feedback about the survey, feel free to

[Wikisource-l] Improvements to the IA-Upload tool

2020-08-03 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello everyone,

I am delighted to share this with everyone that the improved IA-Upload tool
<https://ia-upload.toolforge.org/> is now available for use. The tool now
provides a drop-down feature to select whether to directly upload PDFs from
IA to Commons or to upload DJVUs using the existing workflow.

The tool also checks (using iwbacklinks) whether the requested IA item has
already been uploaded under a different name, and if so it shows an error.

The improvements were made by User:Lautgesetz from Panlex as a part of the
following Project Grant: Grants:Project/PanLex/Balinese palm-leaf
transcription platform on Wikisource
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/PanLex/Balinese_palm-leaf_transcription_platform_on_Wikisource>

There are a few more improvements to the tool than what I mentioned above
and you can read more about them here:
https://github.com/wikisource/ia-upload/pull/42

Thank you!

Satdeep

[Wikisource-l] Welcoming GSoC student Sohom Datta

2020-05-18 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello everyone,

I hope you are all healthy and safe during these difficult times. I expect
that this news might cheer all Wikisource enthusiasts out there!

I am happy to introduce Sohom Datta
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/p/Soda/>! He is one of the students that
the Wikimedia Foundation has selected for the current round of Google
Summer of Code. He is a first year student of Bachelor’s in Computer
Science and Engineering. He will be working on creating a widget to easily
create pagelists on Wikisource. Sam Wilson (primary mentor) and I
(co-mentor) will be mentoring this project.

This project was prioritized because Index creation wizard
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020/Wikisource/Index_creation_wizard>
was one of the highly voted proposals in Community Wishlist Survey 2020
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020>, coming at
6th spot, but couldn’t make it to the Top 5. More updates on the next steps
related to the Wishlist process will follow shortly.

Further details and progress related to this project can tracked on the
related phabricator ticket:

   -

 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T247157

Feel free to provide any feedback that you might have related to the
project on the phabricator ticket. We will be regularly providing updates
to the community as well.

P.S. Sohom also contributes to English Wikipedia and English Wikisource in
his free time under the username: Sohom data
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Sohom_data>.

Stay Safe!

[Wikisource-l] Wikisource in Community Wishlist Survey 2020

2019-11-20 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello everyone,

Some of you might know me already but I will still reintroduce myself. I am
Satdeep Gill and I work in the Community Programs (GLAM) team at the
Wikimedia Foundation, and my work is heavily focused on supporting
Wikisource. I have been working on documenting various pain points and case
studies around Wikisource and I will be coordinating with the Community
Tech team if any of the Wikisource-related proposals
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020/Wikisource>
get voted among the top 5 in Community Wishlist Survey 2020
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020>. Voting
began yesterday and will run until December 2, 2019.

As you already know, 2020’s Community Wishlist Survey will be focused on
Wikimedia projects other than Wikipedia, Commons and Wikidata. The
Community Tech team at the Foundation will then work on the top 5 proposals
voted by the community. This means that there is a significant chance that
Wikisource will be receiving more attention this year! To support this
process, I wanted to share some potentially helpful context gathered from
my time talking with Wikisource communities in India.

Based on a workshop I participated in recently with the Indic community at Wiki
Advanced Training 2019
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Events/Wiki_Advanced_Training/2019>
organized by CIS-A2K <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K>, I have
created a list of top priorities for the Indic Wikisource community. This
might be useful to the global Wikisource community in evaluating Wishlist
proposals, and I have identified specific proposals that closely match
these priorities. They are:

   1.

   Tools/scripts across various Wikisources - There are many scripts/tools
   that exist on some Wikisources and not on others. There isn’t enough
   documentation available to easily localize and integrate them in other
   Wikisources. (Similar to the proposal
Migrate_Wikisource_specific_edit_tools_from_gadgets_to_Wikisource_extension
   2020 proposal

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020/Wikisource#Migrate_Wikisource_specific_edit_tools_from_gadgets_to_Wikisource_extension>
   )
   2.

   VisualEditor for Wikisource/Improving the Proofreading Interface -
   Wikisource uses a lot of templates and VisualEditor for Wikisource needs to
   be designed accordingly. (Similar to UI_improvements_on_Wikisource 2020
   proposal

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020/Wikisource#UI_improvements_on_Wikisource>
   )
   3.

   Tool to integrate book viewing with pagelist creation and identity page
   scan errors - the workflow for creating pagelist could be improved by an
   integrated bookviewer for PDF/DJVU files improving the page identification
   experience and allowing for adding/removing errored pages from a scanned
   file. (Similar to the proposal Index creation wizard 2020 proposal

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020/Wikisource#Index_creation_wizard>
   )

Check the entire report from the Wiki Advanced Training at the link given
below:

https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Newsletter/October_2019/Contents/Wikisource_report

Besides these, it might also be worthwhile to consider the following
proposal around supporting inter-wiki links on Wikisource:

   -

   Inter-language_link_support_via_Wikidata 2020 proposal

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020/Wikisource#Inter-language_link_support_via_Wikidata>

Once again, don't forget to vote on your favorite proposals before December
2, 2019 as the Community Tech team will be working on the top 5 voted
proposals.

Feel free to reach out to me at sg...@wikimedia.org, in case you want to
discuss any of the above, or to further discuss needs and strategies for
Wikisource.

[Wikisource-l] Last day to submit proposals in Community Wishlist 2020

2019-11-10 Thread Satdeep Gill
Hello everyone,

It's exciting that this year's Community Wishlist is focusing on Wikimedia
projects other than Wikipedia, Commons and Wikidata. There are already 35
proposals related to Wikisource
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020/Wikisource>
.

Based on a workshop with at Wiki Advanced Training 2019, I have created a
list of top 5 priorities for Indic Wikisource community. This might be
useful to the global Wikisource community to improve proposals and
prioritize once voting begins.

Most of the proposals have already been submitted in some of the other form
but one top priority from the Indic community is still missing:

*Easy (Automated/Semi-automated) Transclusion of Proofread/Validated
Indexes*

Today is the last day to submit proposals, please feel free to submit this.

You can read the entire Wikisource report in last month's GLAM newsletter:

2019-04-30 Thread Satdeep Gill
@Orbilius, I will get in touch with you to start working on the Italian
Case Study.

@Gerard: There aren't a lot of statistics but
http://francisco.dance/wikigrowth/ might help. If you check the statistics
for Wikisource, you will see that Indic Wikisources are the ones with the
maximum growth in the last year. These statistics aren't designed for
Wikisource but this still shows the value that the Indic communities see in
Wikisource especially when there is an unavailability of online sources
(Project Gutenberg etc.)
