Interesting, hadn't heard of that.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Memento#Usage states that the
"best way to experience this extension is by installing Memento Time
Travel for the Chrome browser."
Is the source code of the Chrome extension available? (I didn't spot in
on https://github.com/mementoweb ). Also, under which license is it?

Cheers,

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for your previous email, with all of the links.

Several of us investigated this in 2013, and we responded back in 2013
when we declined this in Bugzilla in 2013:

As I recall, older versions of this never fully addressed the caching
and infrastructure implications of using HTTP headers. Am I
remembering that correctly? Is there something different about
current versions?

[Wikitech-l] Memento MediaWiki Extension at the W3C

2016-09-12 Thread Shawn Jones
Greetings,

We appreciate the help received from this list during the development of
the Memento MediaWiki Extension [1].

We have recently completed work with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to
bring Memento TimeTravel [2] capabilities to both their wiki and all W3C
specifications - such as those for HTML and CSS [3, 4]. Their wiki runs the
Memento MediaWiki Extension.

In 2012, we began a dialog about bringing Memento to Wikipedia [5], which
resulted in a decision to conduct a pilot on English Wikipedia, but that
effort stalled. The biggest concern at the time was the maturity of the PHP
code in our extension. This has since been addressed, with thanks to many
on this list. We also conducted performance testing during development to
ensure minimal impact to MediaWiki installations [6]. Code for the current
version of the extension, 2.1.4, is located in gerrit [7].

Considering the consensus from the RFC was to start a pilot of Memento on
English Wikipedia, how do we start that process again?

Thanks in advance,

Shawn M. Jones

[Wikitech-l] Maintainers needed for Grrrit-wm

2016-09-12 Thread Yuvi Panda
Hello!

Grrrit-wm[1] is an IRC bot that reports gerrit activiy to IRC. I've
been maintaining it for a few years now, but I no longer have the
bandwidth to do this. I'm going to remove myself as maintainer
shortly. It already has a bunch of people as maintainers on tool labs,
and anyone with +2 on mediawiki core can merge changes in it.
Hopefully that's all good enough :)

Thanks for all the fish!

Yes, a current pending UI/Design task would be perfectly fine and indeed

Pitching projects is good, although the usual bottlenecks are community
consensus and availability of mentors. Non-coding technical projects are
fine in Outreachy (not in GSoC).

For what is worth, there is an ongoing conversation that fits this idea at

Thanks Eran,

I completely forgot to mention this feature in the status update.

I hope to be able to build a test index very soon so we can start
evaluating this new feature.

Thanks Deborah for the update.

Just to mention another interesting feature (implemented but yet
evaluated/activated) - dcausse have implemented ability to show search
results also based on the DEFAULTSORT. (T134978
)
E.g when you search for Putin (and not Vladimir Putin) you will get
suggestion for Vladimir Putin (even if there is no redirect from
Putin), as its defaultsort is Putin, Vladimir.

This feature may have high impact once (and if) it is activated.

Hello,

Here is the week's update from the Discovery department - enjoy
the read and your weekend!

== Discussions ==
* Trey completed the analysis for optimizing language
identification for the Dutch Wikipedia (nlwiki). The results were
good (F0.5 = 82.3%) but not great. The small proportions of
queries in the Romance languages and in German led to many more
false positives than true positives and so they had to be
excluded. Future work on improving confidence may help. [1]
* We could use help translating (via translatewiki) the relevant
"showing results from" messages into Dutch. We'll need English,
Chinese, Arabic, Korean, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, and Russian
translations. [2]
* The Analysis team had a discussion on how to use better wording
for phrases like "users were 1.07 times more likely to do X" and
decided on using phrases similar to "we can expect 2-9 more
sessions to click on a search result when they have the new
feature" [3]
* The Search team wrapped up research into the ElasticSearch
instabilities on the eqiad search cluster that occurred on Aug 6,
2016; nothing conclusive was found. [4]

== Events and News ==

=== Interactive ===
* has been enabled on all wikis (announced via email to
wikitech-l) [5]
* Geoshapes data service is now integrated into all maps [6]

=== Search ===
* Turned off BM25 A/B test, awaiting analysis [7]
* Pushed into production a change that implemented ascii-folding
for French [8]
* Improved balance of nodes across rows for ElasticSearch eqiad
cluster [9]

=== Portal ===
* Currently blocked on this check-in to gerrit [10]

== Other Noteworthy Stuff' ==
* Our elasticsearch clusters now have "row aware shard
allocation". This means that we can theoretically lose one row of
servers in our datacenter and still serve search traffic. [11]
* The Search team sent out a request for comment article that was
posted to various Village Pumps asking for it to be translated. [12]
** This was in reference to the cross-wiki search results new
functionality and design articles on MediaWiki. [13], [14]

== Did you know? ==
* A study came out yesterday showing that giraffes are actually
four distinct species, rather than one (article and BBC report).
[15], [16]
** Of course, the English and German Wikipedia pages on giraffes
have already been updated! [17], [18]

[Wikitech-l] Outreachy-13 mentors needed

2016-09-12 Thread Sumit Asthana
Hello Wikimedians,

Gnome's Outreachy-13 is round the corner
and Wikimedia is again participating in yet another internship season ( Dec
6 to March 6 ). The application deadline is *Oct - 17*.

Its interesting to see that candidates have already started to ping on
projects and show their interest!

Our Outreachy-13 board
 till now has only
three projects. A lot of projects are sitting in possible-tech-projects
 board
waiting to be mentored. Many of them are tagged as *community-wishlist*
showing the community consensus.
The *community wishlist* items which could use some love are:

   1. Make Special:Listfiles show the quantity of globalusage for a file -
   T120748
   2. Category suggestions based on filename, description and location -
   T120437
   3. Create a Timer based reminder for workflows - T88781

Some others which look interesting:

   1. Dark archive for Commons - T120454

   2. Create a CAPTCHA that is also a useful micro edit - T87598

   3. Fix TreeViews to provide pageviews statistics for all articles of any
   wikiproject etc. - T56184
   4. Stash unsaved drafts of articles - T89235

   5. Merge proofread text back into Djvu files - T59807

Its a gentle request to please go through the projects, and if you could
mentor any of those, add yourself to the task as a mentor, and we'll do the
rest.

Also, if you have a lingering task to finish or a new interesting feature
waiting to get implemented, add *possbile-tech-projects*, and we'll make
sure to feature it. The only scope requirement is that it should take 2-3
weeks for an experienced developer to finish.

Please come forward to mentor some of the enthusiastic students so that we
can welcome new members into our community :)

-Thanks and Regards,
