The recently updated meeting time is: 15:00-16:00 UTC / 08:00 PDT / 11:00

That's in about half an hour.

Daylight savings time is a scourge!

[Wikitech-l] Re: Examples of projects using NLP

2022-06-22 Thread Trey Jones

 - Language Converter supports languages with multiple writing systems,
which is sometimes easy and sometimes really hard. (blog post

<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2018/03/12/supporting-languages-multiple-writing-systems/>
 )
 - There's a Wikidata gadget on French Wikipedia and others that appends
results from Wikidata and generates descriptions in various languages based
on the Wikidata information. For example, searching for Molenstraat
 Vught on French Wikipedia

gives no local results, but shows two "Results from Wikidata" / "Résultats
sur Wikidata" (if you are logged in you get results in your preferred
language, if possible, otherwise the language of the project):
 - Molenstraat ; hameau de la commune de Vught (in French, when I'm
 not logged in)
 - Molenstraat ; street in Vught, the Netherlands (fallback to English
 for some reason)
 - The whole giant Content Translation project that uses machine
translation to assist translating articles across wikis. (blog post

<https://wikimediafoundation.org/news/2019/01/09/you-can-now-use-google-translate-to-translate-articles-on-wikipedia/>
 )

There's lots more out there, I'm sure—but I gotta run!

[Wikitech-l] Re: [discovery] Upcoming Search Platform Office Hours—July 14th, 2021

2021-07-12 Thread Trey Jones
A small update: I still have an open ticket with IT about this, but my
current hypothesis is that this calendar item is so old (it was originally
a Google Hangout meeting, rather than Google Meet) that it doesn't have
additional phone numbers to dial in. I will update to a new meeting and add
phone information for the August office hours, but I don't want to change
the video meeting information, since the meeting is only two days away and
it is likely to cause confusion.

I'm having trouble finding international phone numbers for this particular
meeting. I'm not sure if we have international numbers for public meetings
(I think the US number I shared is the one Google offered to me)—or maybe
meetings I schedule don't qualify for them.

I have a request in with our IT folks, but today is a holiday, so I won't
hear back before Monday. Unfortunately, we may not be able to support
international calling, but I'll see what we can do by next Wednesday.

Re: [Wikitech-l] Code sniff for verbose conditionals

2019-02-11 Thread Trey Jones
I decided to look at some examples, and I found one that gives me pause.[0]
if ( $i == 0 ) {
$this->servers[$i]['master'] = true;
} else {
$this->servers[$i]['replica'] = true;
}

I don't know what's specifically going on here, but it's possible that only
$this->servers[$i]['master'] or $this->servers[$i]['replica'] is ever set
(rather than both being previously set to false, for example), so something
like this could *possibly* break later code (that would be some brittle
code, but worse things have been done):
$this->servers[$i]['master'] = ( $i == 0 );
$this->servers[$i]['replica'] = !$this->servers[$i]['master'];

I'm not sure how else to refactor this to avoid the pointless conditional
failure.

That said, thanks for the work to continue to improve our code base!

Not quite! We have to give *David* all the credit for updating and
rebuilding the Hebmorph plugin. I just ran a regression test to make sure
nothing too weird happened when using the new version. (It was only
0.002%-0.003%
weirder than expected, which is acceptable.)

Re: [Wikitech-l] non-obvious uses of in your language

2018-10-15 Thread Trey Jones
Thanks for the technical details, Bartosz!

One would hope (but should confirm) that link prefixes are treated with the
same basic logic as link postfixes/trails, so assuming pre- and post-link
trails are enabled, "pretargetpost" is all linked, but
"prelinktextpost" is only linked on "linktext", and intermediate
cases can be spelled out as "pre+targetpost" or
"pretarget+post".

Overall, it sounds like reasonable default shortcut behavior that can
easily be overridden with a fully-specified link.

Sounds like a cute small syntax improvement! :)

Exactly!

Re: [Wikitech-l] non-obvious uses of in your language

2018-10-15 Thread Trey Jones
I'm not sure how much impact it would have on existing link specifications
to make the change, but I think MGChecker has a good solution. The
"linktextextra" format allows you to specify exactly what part
of the text should have a link, while "targetextra" would be understood
as a shortcut to "targetextra". This solves the linktrails
problem without introducing any extra tags or using nowiki in weird ways.

Looking at some examples in this thread:

 - Schneereichtum would be Schneereichtum
 - Gesetze and Fingers are fine
 - Heimatlosigkeit is fine
 - absorpsjonslinjene might work as intended, but
if the middle "s" isn't supposed to be linked then [[Absorpsjon|
 absorpsjon]]slinjene would do the trick
 - mageeevner og is
still something of a mystery, but magee[[Øssur
Havgrímsson|evner og]] would probably do what is intended
 - Alexander Kiellands would be [[Alexander Kielland|Alexander
 Kielland]]s
 - FNs would be fine

This isn't really about anymore—sorry Amir!—but I think it could
solve the linktrails syntax issue. The problem, as I alluded to earlier, is
what changing the syntax would do to existing links. Though it would be
possible to automatically convert existing "linktextextra" to "
linktextextra" if target and linktext are different, or "
targetextra" if target and linktext are the same (possibly modulo
whatever minor differences are allowed, like upper/lowercase—though there
are rare instances of articles that differ only by upper/lowercase).

Are their any other linktrails setting other than off and on? We'd want to
make sure any changes didn't do weird things to Chinese or other spaceless
languages.

Re: [Wikitech-l] "PHP test coverage decreased" - really?

2018-04-26 Thread Trey Jones
If you haven't checked out https://doc.wikimedia.org/cover/, you should!
You can see what code is covered (and by which tests) and what code is not
covered if you want to generally improve test coverage.

Two things:

1) A coverage report like that, instead of just numbers showing the
relative change, would make it much easier to figure out what needs test
coverage but doesn't have it when submitting a patch to Gerrit.

2) From looking at the coverage reports, a pattern I've seen, at least in
the generally well-covered code I work with most, is that failure checks
are the general kind of code most likely to not be covered by tests,
especially the cases that are never supposed to happen, like something
being unexpectedly null, empty, or undefined.

My new unofficial (and somewhat inefficient) plan is to cover what I can
when I write new code, but expect test coverage to sometimes decrease. Once
the code is merged, and the test coverage report updates, I can find the
specific code branches that aren't covered and add more tests. It's not
efficient, but it does let you ratchet up the coverage over time much more
easily than before.

These changes were completed the week of October 9th and deployed the
following week. The re-indexing of the affected wikis was completed a few
hours ago and should be live everywhere now.

The list of affected languages is on the Phab ticket T177871[1] and a list
by wiki is on that page in a comment.[2]

[Wikitech-l] Disabling Messaging Fallbacks for Language Analysis

2017-09-26 Thread Trey Jones
SUMMARY: The Search Platform team (formerly part of Discovery) is planning
to fix a long-standing search bug on many wiki projects by disabling the
code in CirrusSearch that re-uses the “fallback” languages (which are
specified for user interface or system messages) for the language analysis
modules (which are used to index words in search). Deployment is planned to
start the week of October 9, 2017.

Messaging fallbacks specify what language to show a message in when there
is no message available in the language of a given wiki. A language
analysis module is language-specific software that processes text to
improve searching—so that, for example, searching for a given word will
find related forms of that word, like "hope, hopes, hoping, hoped" or
"resume, resumé, résumé" on English-language wikis.

Fallback languages for system messages make sense for historical and
cultural reasons—a reader of the Chechen Wikipedia is more likely to
understand a user interface or system message in Russian than in French,
Greek, Hindi, Italian, or Japanese—but the fallbacks don't necessarily make
any linguistic sense. Chechen and Russian, for example, are from unrelated
language families; while the languages have undoubtedly influenced one
another, their grammars are completed different.

We will deploy the software change that disables using messaging fallbacks
for language analysis fallbacks in about two weeks (targeting the week of
October 9, 2017), with any cross-language analysis exceptions explicitly
configured in a new manner. Changes will not immediately happen to all
affected wikis because each wiki in each language will need to be
re-indexed, which is a separate process that takes time. There may also be
other delays caused by Elasticsearch upgrades or other changes that need
immediate attention.

You can also track progress of the tasks on Phabricator[1] or read more,
see examples, and get the full list of languages affected on MediaWiki.[2]

Finding good names for keywords is also an art. "phonetic:" came to mind
because the algorithms used to index words by pronunciation are
collectively called phonetic algorithms[1]. You could conceivably also map
to IPA, but in general the algorithms are much less detailed than IPA,
because they are trying to find a balance between inclusivity and
exclusivity in grouping similar words (a lot drop non-initial vowels, for
example), while IPA is usually much more specific.

Mapping IPA into such a system would be interesting. Say I heard someone
talk about someone named /ɡədɑfi/—hopefully that would allow me to find
Gaddafi (with his famously a hard-to-spell name). Amusingly, the character
folding on English Wikipedia maps ɡədɑfi to gadafi, which is a redirect to
Gaddafi—so IPA sometimes works now! But it wouldn't work for George /kluni/.

We have gone far afield now, but there are Phabricator tickets for advanced
search in general[2] and phonetic search specifically[3] if anyone wants to
follow up there.

Doing any special weighting would be more difficult, but they would already
be naturally ranked lower for not being exact matches. (You can see this at
work if you compare the results for *resume, resumé,* and *résumé* on
English Wikipedia, for example.)

Actually, add an option button in advanced search in any case, and just
> limit discussion about should it be opt-in or opt-out.

There are longer term plans for revamping advanced search capabilities, so
if we want to go that route, it's doable, but it would definitely be on
hold for a while. Options that have been mentioned include a special case
keyword like "kana:オオカミ", or a more generic keyword like "phonetic:オオカミ"
that was smart enough to know what to do with kana, but might do something
different with other characters... but that's all at the vague ideation
stage right now.

[Wikitech-l] Mapping Hiragana and Katakana

2017-09-19 Thread Trey Jones
We recently got a suggestion via Phabricator[1] to automatically map
between hiragana and katakana when searching on English Wikipedia and other
wiki projects. As an always-on feature, this isn't difficult to implement,
but major commercial search engines (Google.jp, Bing, Yahoo Japan,
DuckDuckGo, Goo) don't do that. They give different results when searching
for hiragana/katakana forms (for example, オオカミ/おおかみ "wolf"). They also give
different *numbers* of results, seeming to indicate that it's not just
re-ordering the same results (say, so that results in the same script are
ranked higher).[2] I want to know what they know that I don't!

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this would be useful (seems that
it would) and whether it would cause any problems (it must, or otherwise
all the other search engines would do it, right?).

Any idea why it might be different between a Japanese-language wiki and a
non-Japanese-language wiki? We often are more aggressive in matching
between characters that are not native to a given language--for example,
accents on Latin characters are generally ignored on English-language
wikis. So it might make sense to merge hiragana and katakana on
English-language wikis but not Japanese-language wikis.

Thanks very much for any suggestions or information!

[Wikitech-l] Blog Post: Wikipedia, search, and the “Цкщтп” keyboard

2017-08-28 Thread Trey Jones
Hi everyone,

Let me start by apologizing for that title to anyone who reads a language
written in Cyrillic. I hope no one sprained their tongue trying to say it
out loud.

To learn why it's an almost reasonable thing to write and more about how
your keyboard can betray you—and how we can use language identification
software to detect your keyboard's inevitable betrayal—head over to the
Wikimedia Blog and read all about it:

Re: [Wikitech-l] Chinese conversion, search engines, and auto-detection

2017-05-19 Thread Trey Jones
>

cookie or in localStorage?

A quick test when I'm not logged in indicates that variant selection isn't
remembered between searches, or even when following links! The default
"/wiki/" version of the page can be mixed Traditional and Simplified
characters (which seems maximally unhelpful).

If it doesn't, then I'd like to know it, and to think whether we can do
> anything about it in our software.

Discovery is almost ready to deploy changes to improve searching on Chinese
wikis. We are using an Elastic plugin to convert Traditional Chinese
characters to Simplified, and another plugin that does a better job of
segmenting Simplified text into words (the plugin only works on Simplified
text—which is why we haven't used it in the past: it's pretty bad on
Traditional text).

So, searching for Simplified or Traditional text will find the other
(modulo the imperfections in the software—but it's definitely a big
improvement). "Exact" matches are still weighted some, so Traditional and
Simplified variants don't always return the exact same results, but they
will be much more similar compared to the current situation, where they
don't necessarily overlap at all.

The changes should go out after the Hackathon (and possibly some vacations
tacked on to the Hackathon), and then we'll have to re-index Chinese wikis
to make them live. So, not yet—but soon!

Re: [Wikitech-l] Transliteration of Crimean Tatar Wiki: Where can we get help?

2017-03-27 Thread Trey Jones
I might work on this at the Hackathon (and maybe find Bunyk there if he's
interested). I would need someone who knows Crimean Tatar to help validate
the results, though that wouldn't have to happen during the Hackathon.

Re: [Wikitech-l] Transliteration of Crimean Tatar Wiki: Where can we get help?

2017-03-24 Thread Trey Jones
It looks like a lot of the pieces needed to make this happen are out there.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like a one-to-one transliteration based on
the description in English Wikipedia.[1] But when is language ever
straightforward?

It looks like much of the work to deal with all the contextual variation
and the exceptions to the transliteration was at least attempted twice.
There's a zip file of code attached to the Phab Ticket,[2] and link to some
code on-wiki[5]. From the comments, it looks like that code never quite
worked, but it seems possible to harvest the conversion data from one or
both and put it into the same format as the other existing language
converters, like Kazakh[3]—and it *might* be easier this time since it's
been 6.5 years and the LanguageConverter code is probably more mature now.

It would be even better if someone could create an Elasticsearch plugin to
do the same kind of conversion. That would allow cross-alphabet searching,
too. I've been working with a plugin[4] that does that kind of thing for
Traditional and Simplified Chinese.
