Its been pointed out to me that my description of Outreachy was
incorrect. It is open to anyone who is in a group that is
"underrepresented", not just Women. Additionally, unlike GSOC, you do
not need to be a student to participate. For more information on this
program see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreachy

You are welcome to contribute at any time. You do not need to be part
of a program to do so. The other major outreach programs are GCI
(happening right now) which is open to high school students, and
Outreachy, which is similar to GSOC, but only open to Women.

As far as "culture" goes, that's a rather broad question. Can you be
more specific.

Whether or not somebody replies to you can depend on a lot of factors,
such as how specific your question is, if anyone knowledgeable is
around (This can very significantly with timezone), etc. If your
nickname is unavailable, I would suggest just chosing a different one.
Possibly it is unavailable because you are still logged in somewhere
(most likely), or maybe someone else also uses that nickname. If you
really want to always have the same nickname always, see the freenode
ChanServ docs about how to register a nickname.

2016-12-10 Thread MAYANK JINDAL
Hi ,
Hope you are doing well.
I want to discuss my preparation for Gsoc-2017 in Wikimedia. I am very new
to this organization and I am facing a lot of difficulties in getting
Wikimedia workflow.
1. I have done open source contributions in past and what I have seen is -
They have their repositories on GitHub and issues related to that repo. For
preparing to contribute, we just had to fork their repo and send a pull
request after resolving the issue. But in Wikipedia, there is a lot of
hassle(phabricator, gerrit and all).
2. For the preparation of GSoC, we need to choose an idea from the idea
page. Can you please help me in choosing the project?
I am doing android app developement since 3 years. So I think android
related tasks would be easy for me to get started.
Could Someone help me for getting started in android?
3. What are the other things that happen apart from GSoC(In case if I wish
to contribute even after Gsoc. How is the culture of this
community?
4. I am not facing a lot of difficulties in IRC. Sometimes I don't get the
reply, sometimes my nickname is unavailable if I get offline for some time
and it is not very friendly. Could somebody help me in IRC. I am using mac.
My nickname is *mayank_dev*

I apologize for my long email. But I am facing a lot of difficulties in
the community.

Thanks.

Greetings! It's a bit early for GSoC 2017, but certainly getting to
know the project now will help everyone in 2017. I think a good next
step is to join one of our IRC channels and say "hi" there:

[Wikitech-l] Introduction | GSoC Intern | Pywikibot Support for Thanks

2016-05-16 Thread Sriharsh Bhyravajjula
Hello All,

I am Sriharsh ( I go by the nick of darthbhyrava on IRC and on
Phabricator), and this is a rather late introduction of myself. :P

I am a second year undergrad pursuing a dual degree (B.Tech in Computer
Science and MS in Computational Linguisitcs) course at IIIT-Hyderabad. I
was fortunate enough to be selected as a Google Summer of Code intern at
Wikimedia this year, and I will be working on implementing pywikibot
support for the Thanks extension. :)

I would like to thank my mentor jayvdb for helping me extensively since
February, and for being one of the primary reasons for my getting selected.
I would also like to polybuildr, my friend from college, who introduced me
to the world of Wikimedia, fellow intern AbdealiJK for his help, and all
the other people who replied to my doubts on IRC or reviewed my patches or
commented on my tasks. Thank you all, for giving me an opportunity to work
on Thanks! :)

It's been a while into the Community Bonding period, and I have enjoyed it
so far. I have realized the demands of the project, and look forward to the
challenge of implementing Pywikibot-Thanks over the next two months. This
being my first GSoC experience, I look forward to a learning a lot over the
summer and beyond!

Thank you for your time.

P.S: You can take a look at my proposal and progress at
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T130585, or read my blog on my wonderful
Wikimedia experience so far at http://bhyrava.me/code . Thank you once
again!

[Wikitech-l] Introduction for OPW (Collaborative spelling dictionary building tool)

2014-10-28 Thread Ankita Shukla
Hello!

I am Ankita Shukla, a Computer Science and Engineering student pursuing
the junior year of Bachelor of Technology at the Indian Institute of
Technology Roorkee, India. I had posted my announcement for the
project 'collaborative
spelling dictionary building tool' here
https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2014-October/079007.html.

I have also set up the proposal page
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Ankitashukla/Proposal for the project
with help and guidance from my mentors. Since the project itself is quite
dependent on the community support and crowd-sourcing, therefore it would
be great to get started with considering the views of the community about
the same.

I'd be happy to have reviews and feedback from the community regarding the
proposal and the (feasibility of the) timeline in particular. I welcome any
suggestion towards the betterment of the project and am also ready to
discuss about any point which might not be very clear in the proposal. :)

Kindest regards

Thanks,

There are extensive spelling dictionaries for the major languages of the

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Language_support_of_LibreOffice. They
help make Wikipedia articles in these languages more readable and
professional and provide an opportunity for participation in improving
spelling. Many other languages, however, don’t have spelling dictionaries.
One possible way to build good spelling dictionaries would be to employ
crowdsourcing, and Wikipedia editors can be a good source for this, but
this approach will also require a robust system in which language experts
will be able to manage the submissions: accept, reject, filter and build
new versions of the spelling dictionary upon them. This can be done as a

[Wikitech-l] Introduction for OPW (Collaborative spelling dictionary building tool)

2014-10-10 Thread Ankita Shukla
Hello everyone!

I am Ankita Shukla and am a Computer Science and Engineering student pursuing
the junior year of Bachelor of Technology.

I am interested in working on the project: Collaborative spelling dictionary
building tool, as given on the Featured Projects Section of MediaWiki OPW
page.

It'd be really great if I could get some guidance through this. Also, since
the project did not seem to mention any micro-task explicitly, could someone
suggest what I could take up as a micro-task?
I'd be really grateful for the help and support. :)

Thanks in advance,
Ankita Shukla

[Wikitech-l] Introduction - Arun

2012-05-03 Thread Arun Ganesh
Hi everyone,
I wanted to introduce myself to the community and the WMF team, I'm Arun
Ganesh (user:planemad)[1a] from Bangalore, India and have joined as
contractor for the foundation's L10n team[1b] as an Interaction designer
along with Pau to improve the user experience of language tools and
features.

I have been a longtime contributer to both commons[2] and the
openstreetmap[3] project and got involved with foundation work during the
Mumbai and Pune hackathons recently[4][5][6] where I proposed some of the
first ideas for the Universal Language Selector widget with Brandon, with
which we want to make language selection for anyone easy peasy.

Apart from that, I love cartography and maps [7], which would explain my
map contributions and the occasional headline for wikipedia [8], use only
public transport[9] and traveling with my pocket camera[10].

Its feels great to have this opportunity to work more seriously on a
project which has been an important part of my life. I'm new here, I wont
claim to know much, but I hope to make a difference in whichever way
possible. I also look forward to interacting more closely and learning from
the rest of the designers - Brandon, Heather and Pau to do the wonderful
things that designers like to do .So keep the usability bugs coming :)
-Arun

[Wikitech-l] introduction (community communications for Wikidata)

2012-03-09 Thread Lydia Pintscher
Hi everyone!

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I'm Lydia and just
started working for Wikimedia Germany. Some of you might know me from
my work in Free Software projects.

I'll be a part of the team working on Wikidata
(http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata) - the goal of the project is
to create something similar to Wiki Commons for data). It's a huge
undertaking for the German and global community. Wikidata is a project
I am passionate about and I am even more passionate about doing it
right. Doing it right in this case obviously means making sure
everyone's input is heard and taken into consideration. My
responsibility will be exactly that - working with all of you to make
it a successful project. A lot of things concerning how, when and
where this will be used in Wikipedia are still up for discussion and
decisions need to be found in the community. I will be here to
facilitate this.

I assume many of you have not heard from me before so let me tell you
a bit about myself. I studied computer science at the Karlsruhe
Institute of Technology. There I worked on a program to plan
robot-assisted laser surgeries on human skulls and wrote my diploma
thesis on collaborative and transparent Free Software development. I'm
passionate about enabling people to make awesome happen around Free
Culture. I've spent most of my spare time in the last 7 years on
community work in KDE (http://kde.org). This includes running its
mentoring programs, co-founding its community working group, serving
on the board of the non-profit behind it and generally making sure
everything is running smoothly. I've also helped out other projects
occasionally like Kubuntu, VLC/VideoLan and openSUSE in that position.
Not long ago I released a free book called Open Advice
(http://open-advice.org) that is a collaborative effort to make it
easier for people to start contributing to Free Software. You probably
know 4 of the authors from around Wikipedia. When it comes to
MediaWiki I have done developer engagement for Semantic MediaWiki Plus
for the last two years and am on the steering committee of the
non-profit behind Semantic MediaWiki. Due to my day only having 24
hours (even if some people claim otherwise) I have not had a chance to
get into contributing to Wikipedia. Thankfully that's going to change
now. (As a very regular user: Thank you!)

For the next days/weeks my focus will be:
* collecting ideas/doubts/other input for Wikidata that you already
have for me now (I'll work through any existing discussions I can find
- if you want to make sure I see something please do send me a link.)
* creating some resources to explain the project better
* setting up some infrastructure to keep everyone updated on the
status and able to contribute
* work on collecting input in a structured manner and addressing it together

If you have any questions please let me know. I'll be around on the
English and German Wikipedia, IRC, XMPP, Skype or whatever else you
prefer ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Lydia_Pintscher_(WMDE) ).
You can subscribe to the Wikidata mailing list at
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-l and join the
IRC channel #wikimedia-wikidata on freenode.

Cheers
Lydia, who is really looking forward to working with you
