Well, Id argue a different point.

Once again, a very important technology that could have really helped WISPs,
never really got used by WISPs, because VC's got involved, and let their
greed drive them to build a business model for the big pie-in-the-sky ROI,
that was not realistic, instead of building a business model that would
guarantee that the technology would actually get used by teh majority of
WISPs. It doesn't take $80 million to develop the technology.

To this day, the FCC gave us one of teh largest advantages to help WISPs
survive the noise of consumer wifi devices. That was the High-power rule of
smart antennas, giving us an extra 8db of transmit power. Every one of us
wishes we legally had 8db more in our Link budgets. But, its been five
years now, and how many manufacturers have given us teh options? The
problem wasn't the technology concept or the deamnd from the buyer's side.
The problem was the business models of the sellers.

I'd argue the same for Vivato. It was a great product, but few will ever
afford to use it, (or I should say with their bankruptcy, they are no longer
around to sell it.)

In SkyPilot's case, all I read is that they sold their company. For all I
know they will continue selling their product commercially?

Skypilot had some innovative antenna-switching technology, but had also
raised nearly $80M in VC funding to develop it. The VCs, on average,
probably lost 95% of their investment. It shows what all too often happens
when investors become enamoured with the sexiness of a technology, without
taking a close look at whether that enhanced technology really matters to
the day-to-day operations of end-users. In Skypilot's case, IMO it clearly
did not.

I saw something on the list serve for SkyPilot this weekend. Didn't read
it so this might be a repeat. See below about SkyPilot being sold to
smart meter company.

Smart meter company Trilliant said it acquired WiFi infrastructure
provider SkyPilot Network to help it compete in the smart grid market.
Trilliant said the acquisition will be a complement to its shorter-range
"SecureMesh" technology, which is based on Zigbee, to link meter
collection points. SkyPilot has developed a longer range mesh WiFi
technology that can propagate up to 10 miles or more.

According to Eric Miller, Trilliant's chief solutions officer, the
combination of the two technologies have already been integrated in a
project with municipal utility Milton Hydro in Ontario, Canada as well
as another unnamed utility. Interestingly, a number of players have been
coalescing around several technologies--fiber, cellular, satellite and
WiMAX.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Cox Communications, which plans to roll out CDMA EV-DO in the 700 MHz
band using Huawei gear, has been handing out the contracts lately as it
moves toward a launch of its network later this year. Today the cable
operator announced it will use Starent Networks' multimedia core
networking solutions for its wireless network.

Starent's intelligent Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) and Home Agent
(HA) will deliver data and multimedia services within Cox's 3G network,
while the vendor's intelligent In-line Services include enhanced
charging, content filtering, network-based traffic optimization,
application detection and optimization as well as stateful firewall
designed to improve network performance and reliability.

Cox's aim is to eventually migrate to Long Term Evolution (LTE)
technology. It is deploying Huawei's LTE-ready SingleRAN solution and
3900 Series base stations. The cable company is expected to launch its
service later this year, which will serve around 23 million potential
customers.

Last week, Bridgewater Systems announced that Cox Communications will
deploy the Bridgewater Service Controller.

As LTE vendors push ahead with LTE developments and "commercial" trials,
the mobile operator community is struggling to get the message across to
these equipment suppliers that there is an urgent need for automated
network management tools.

Operators are keen to see self-configuring and self-optimising LTE
networks--better known as Self-Organising Networks (SONs)--because of
their potential to reduce network Opex. According to Unstrung, who spoke
to Tarek Salem, head of automation and tools at T-Mobile International,
deploying LTE will significantly increase operators' workload because of
the requirement to configure and optimise at least three different
networks: 2G, 3G and LTE. "The starting point is nothing," he said. "No
effort in planning, no effort in optimisation. This is something a
machine can do for us and something it can do much better than us."

However, it appears likely initial SON applications will only appear
with limited features, with the equipment vendors developing the
requested add-ons at a later date. But, two of the early features
operators seem likely to benefit from include base station
auto-configuration and automatic neighbour relations, which detects
nearby cell sites and makes the required adjustments to suit the network
topology.

Salem's concluding viewpoint on SON was that an LTE macro base station
should be as easy to install as a femtocell. "There should be no
pre-planning sites. Once installed, an [eNodeB] automatically connects
to the network... The site is auto-configured."

It's been three years since the Minneapolis city council gave the
go-ahead to a muni-WiFi network from US Internet, and nearly 14,000
customers have signed up for the service at $18 to $30 per month.
Meanwhile, access to city departments is moving a bit slower.

Even though the city pays $1.25 million annually to be the network's
anchor tenant, the city is only getting about $50,000 worth of WiFi
services. However, the city is allowed to carry the amount forward to
the next year. US Internet said the city can carry over its usage
dollars for the full 10 years of the city-company contract.

The slower adoption is partly attributed to poor radio connectivity in
some areas so police and fire departments won't switch from their
cellular connections to the WiFi network until coverage is better. Other
city departments haven't changed their operations to take advantage of
the WiFi network. The police would like to use it to provide additional
bandwidth that will allow police cars to transmit live video.

US Internet said some of the dead spots in the network are the result of
delays in getting permits for WiFi radios on city park land.

Research firm Gartner said the majority of car makers by 2012 will focus
on products that enable wireless data connectivity in more than half of
their next-generation automobiles.

Citing the automobile industry's need to find new ways to generate
consumer interest, product differentiation and revenue opportunities,
Garner said the automobile industry should focus on applications and
services specifically designed to enhance the driving and ownership
experience--not replicate the home computer Internet experience.

The continued proliferation of connected consumer devices, such as
smartphones and mobile Internet devices, will increase consumer
expectations for always-on data availability, the firm said. Gartner
anticipates that by 2016, consumers will consider in-vehicle
connectivity as important as traditional automobile features.
