RE: [WISPA] Dual Port Router's?
We've used many of the Nortel Instant Internet 100S units available on eBay for under $50. They have several WAN interfaces, andcan create many moreinterfaces oneach 10-100 using external switches and can often be found with ISDN or dial-up as a third interface for backup. I use it at home with one WAN to the cable modem, the second to a DSL as backup for my home Internet and VoIP use. The are 100Mb wire speed and also support IPSEC. . . . j o n a t h a n -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of Bo HamiltonSent: Friday, June 02, 2006 8:07 AMTo: WISPA General ListSubject: [WISPA] Dual Port Router's? Re: [WISPA] Atheros 5213 PCI Card Keeps Breaking
Couldn't say for sure, but I have a suspicion - static discharge in the antenna. Worked on Canopy at Motorola. At one time they used an antenna coupling circuit that was highly static sensitive (at the antenna). They reworked the antenna couplingto make it less succeptible. If these cards are not explicitly designed for outdoor use then I'd suspect this. When the antenna coupler pops you get a high insertion loss to the antenna (power going in or out suffers). This seems to fit your symptoms. I'm not a ham, and don't have any suggestions on how to reduce the potential for static discharge in the antenna to pop an antenna coupler on the board. But I'd check ifthe antenna mount is grounded to the same ground as the radio board. Rich - Original Message - From: Kelly Shaw To: 'WISPA General List' Sent: Friday, June 02, 2006 3:56 PM Subject: [WISPA] Atheros 5213 PCI Card Keeps Breaking I'm running a StarOS Wrap Combo with an Atheros 5213 PCI card at one of my POPs. When the slightest thunderstorm comes through, I lose this card. For some reason or another it's output drops severely and only my closest clients can connect. I go from a -65 signal to -85+ on my closest client. My tower has never had a direct hit through all of this. The WRAP board appears to be working just fine and I can access the STAROS program just fine. A replacement of the radio card brings things back to normal. I have a surge suppressor in-line with only 10 feet of LMR-400 to my antenna. Could my problem be that my ground is shoddy? I've been through 4 of these cards in the past year because of this and can't figure it out. Once these storms go through tonight, I am thinking about filing down my ground connection to the tower to ensure a better contact surface. I believe it is EBays policy to duplicate every official email on their site. So if you get something that looks like it is from ebay, you should log into ebay and check to see if you have the same email in their 'My Messages' system. Needless to say you should log into ebay by going to www.ebay.com and not by clicking on the link in the email ;) If you go to their Help secion #1 on the list is How do I know that an email is really from eBay? ... eBay will *never *ask you to provide account numbers, passwords or other sensitive information through email. If eBay does request information from you, a copy of that email will be in the My Messages box in My eBay. However, today I feel I must. Right now, the telephone and cable companies in control of Internet access are trying to use their enormous political muscle to dramatically change the Internet. It might be hard to believe, but lawmakers in Washington are seriously debating whether consumers should be free to use the Internet as they want in the future. The phone and cable companies now control more than 95% of all Internet access. These large corporations are spending millions of dollars to promote legislation that would divide the Internet into a two-tiered system. The top tier would be a Pay-to-Play high-speed toll-road restricted to only the largest companies that can afford to pay high fees for preferential access to the Net. The bottom tier -- the slow lane -- would be what is left for everyone else. If the fast lane is the information super-highway, the slow lane will operate more like a dirt road. Today's Internet is an incredible open marketplace for goods, services, information and ideas. We can't give that up. A two lane system will restrict innovation because start-ups and small companies -- the companies that can't afford the high fees -- will be unable to succeed, and we'll lose out on the jobs, creativity and inspiration that come with them. Nor am I defending Hyperlinktech, as we don't have enough business experience with them, to have a valid opinion. but...This isn't retail HomeDepot that we are talking about, this is distribution. In my 10 years experience previously in the distribution business, I can tell you there are not many companies that give "refunds." We also found that the companies that couldn't understand why "refunds" was bad business for distributors, usually were the ones that didn't do enough volume to matter wether we lost them. I'm not saying that Ipersonally do not believe in giving refunds. I also believe its best practice totake care of the customer, in most cases. But that does not change the factthat most dealers do NOT give refunds. Tessco, Talley. Hutton, Electrocomm. They may give refunds, but there significant hassle in getting it, that in most cases will be more costly to the buyer in time than the value of the refund. They also usually charge a higher profit margin on every sale thanthe smaller distributor that is competing on price, and therefore hasmore margin to justify eating the cost to give the refund. I bet the price received from Hyperlinktech was significantly less than that the Tesscos or Hutton's would have charged? When price drops, terms gets tougher. A distributor must determine which business they want to be in, and they can't be in both successfully. If in the price market they need to have price policies. Descretionneeds to be taken out of the set policies, otherwise its impossible to manageRMA processes. There are many reasons strict policies need to be inforced for Refunds 1. Price constantly falls based on time. And even a week or s odone the road the cost of the product may have dropped. 2. People find something cheaper after the fact. 3. Sales people may have already been paid commissions. 4. If special order product, the vendor ends up getting stuck withthe full cost of the product sitting in inventory for a long time, whileprice drops by the time someone wants the product. Guaranteed to sell theproduct at a loss as well as tie up cash flow. 5. People often irreputably return other vendor's products. Company1 has stock and can ship today.
