[WISPA] ISPCON Conference Call

2006-11-13 Thread Peter R.

You have been reading the blog notes about this Fall's exciting ISPCON
(http://radinfo.blogspot.com/), but tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 14) at 3 PM
Eastern you can talk to me about it. I didn't hit every session - but I
tried to! So look at the ISPCON website (www.ispcon.com) to see if any
of the session topics interest you - and I will be happy to share what
I heard about it. RSVP for the conference bridge.

Thank you.

I got it here. It looks like a great program, but Patrick, why only the 5.8

gear included in this? Doesn't help us out much where we have TONS of
trees, right? Why no 2.4 or 900 gear included in the program too?

On Monday morning a mail will hit the WISPA list (sent via WISPA's ad
mechanism, not as a post) that will have a letter from me. Within that
will be a link to a jump page where you can get access to the detailed
pdf. This version of pdf will have more price details than the one
distributed at the WISPA meeting, so those 30 or so of you that received
a hard copy the other night may want to pull down the other one.

Everything will be ready and waiting.

Sorry, I have not responded sooner guy, but I kept missing opportunities
 to
 connect to the Internet.
The reason I did not post details on the List, is that the pricing and
program is a deal designed and offered ONLY to WISPs, and I was not sure

what part of it was suppsoed to be confidential or Open to disclose.

The program is for the existing VL product line, the one you always
 wanted
to buy, but thought you could never afford.
There are volume commits involved, but they are VERY minimal. The Plan
 is
not just about pricing, it also includes additonal support for WISPs via

online content and such. When you learn about it, you will see why I
 was so
excited. This program is something that never could have happened
 without
someone like Patrick Leary behind it, who fully understands the needs of

WISPs, and went to bat for us.

What I liked about the program is that it came from the principle of how
 can
they help us, help ourselves as a group, and ultimately reach higher
 volume
of product deployment (For mutual benefit). Understand that this is Best
 of
Breed product, at the top of the pyramid, so sod course set realistic
expectations that their is no justification for the program to compete
against $99 CB3 boxes. But it now allows a WISP to make decisions based
 on
whether the features and design of the product is the best product for
 the
job, rather than having to make selection based on price. It allows a
 WISP
to step up their operations a couple notches, and puts FCC certified /
carrier class gear within their reach.

Disclaimer: The fact that I am impressed by the Alvarion program, and
without a doubt will be participating in this program personally, does
 not
take away the value that other manufacturer's products may also deliver.

But I now can make my decissions based on the merit of the individual
product lines, for the appropriate locations. Alvarion is not the
appropriate product for all my needs, but I know where I do need it, and

I've been waiting for this day for that opportunity.

Paul,

Patrick said they will make an announcement. We don't feel that it is
WISPA's place to make this public announcement until it is sent to us for
dispersal. I'm sure there are legal ramifications that could come from
pre-announcement releases. I strongly advise those who have been privy to
the initial release at ISPCON to refrain from sending it to the list.
Please be patient as Patrick works on California time and it is still
morning out there.

2006-11-13 Thread Jason Hensley
There was a public release that came out this morning. I got it via what I
assume is Alvarion's direct email list. I'm not a current Alvarion user,
but I am on their mailing list, so I'm not sure how else I would have gotten
it. It seems to be a public release / announcement.

Please be patient as Patrick works on California time and it is still
morning out there.

gear included in this? Doesn't help us out much where we have TONS of

2006-11-13 Thread Marlon K. Schafer (509) 982-2181
In a nut shell, Patrick (yes Patrick) has come up with a program
specifically aimed at the WISPs. We'll get volume discounts of over 70%
(can't remember the exact number) with purchases of a whopping 25 units per
QUARTER. There are additional discounts that add to this depending upon how
many WISPs overall purchase the gear. Very cool stuff.

I saw the program and said Hell, *I* can do that! I got a big grin out of
Patrick with that one. hehehehe

It'll take a while for us to install enough APs to drive that kind of volume
for me. I do more volume than that as it is, but I'll not be putting VL at
all 20 tower sites over night. Certainly something to think about for our
bigger sites though.

I really like this program. Finally I don't feel like my business is being
used to subsidize the bigger (read telco) players.

My hope is that this program will set a precedent in the market place. We
may be small but we're growing, fast. There were more 1000 and up WISPs at
ISPCon than you could shake a stick at. Very cool.

Now we have to wait and see if Alvarion can stick with this program for the
next 3 years so that the market has time to install the base stations needed
to really make this new model shine.

Thanks again Patrick. Your loyalty to our industry segment is much

Those who were not there, (WISPA meeting), some extremely exciting news
was released by Alvarion.
The details of the Comnet program. Clearly the most exciting news from the
show.

I can't even begin to communicate the impression that it made.
There could not have been a stronger message that they want WISPs as their
customer.

A WISP will NEVER again use the excuse that they can not afford Alvarion.
Since this is a public list, I'll leave the details, for WISPs to discover
when checking out the program.

But I will hint by saying, it enables Alvarion for residential.
Its a pretty hard sell, NOT to switch.

found a couple of VOIP companies that are offering Vonage type services that
the ISP can private label!

Turn key * systems were there. And I saw a really cool off site backup
program that not only sent your data off site, it also split it up over
several servers. Pretty cool stuff.

Re: [WISPA] on call staff

2006-11-13 Thread Tom DeReggi

Travis brings up a good point. the legality of it.

It difficult to implement a policiy, that is not 100% legal. If not
documented, how can one be held accountable for following it. If its
documented then you just gave your employee the abilty to win a law suit
agaisnt you, as you've admitted the policy and practice of it. So to
effectively launch an on-call policy, one must first consider the legal
ramifications and account for them. Take note that it is not necessarilly
a requirement to pay full minimum wage for on-call duty. Just like the
airlines that pay a reduced wage when they are on-call. However,
conflicting law infers that if an employee is on-call, they must be paid for
being on-call even if they are not performing work and jsut on standby. The
exact interpretation of these law really depends on what duties they have
when they are on-call. Do they just work when an insodent comes in? Are
they required to comprmise their life in any way while in on-call status?
And how will this apply? Again questions best answered by legal council
knowledgable with the laws of your state, as state employment law usually
has further restrictions.

We found that the person that took/qualified the off-hour service request
should not necessarilly be the same person that actually went onsite to do
the repair work. Expecially if they don't get paid to do it, or more so if
they do get paid overtime. If you pay overtime, they go onsite when they may
not normally have to, to rake up some extra top dollar pay. If you don't
pay, then they are likely to respond slower to outages, such as wait until
morning to investigate instead of when it actually happens at night. And
what do you do when, an on-call tech responds 10 hours late, because they
went away with their family anyway? How would you know, since you left it up
to someone else to monitor when outages occured. By the time you find out
that the tech responded to slow (the next day), its to late and nothing you
can do able it to correct it sooner. And can you complain when they were
expected to do it for free?

What I do is I take the off-hours monitoring duty personally, so I can
qualify when a site visit is required or not on the weekend. Then I call the
tech on-call and make them go out, if needed. I often do the off-hour
repair personally, jsut because I want to save on over-time pay, and want
the techs to get some rest and fun, because I work them hard during the
week, and they need the rest. I recently offloaded the night monitoring to
one of our techs that I trust, in trade that he would not have to do the
truck rolls on the week end. But I always have a different tech responsible
for checking for outages in the mornings than the tech on night on-call duty
so I have appropriate checks and balances.

I have not found a perfect system yet, jsut because we do not have enough
staff to share the duty adequately and still ahve checks and balances, where
there is a second person on-call in case the first person missed it. What
I plan to do is to start scheduling overlapping schedules so more of the day
is handled by paid staff, and less time to be covered by on-call duty.

Hi,

That's not legal (at least not in Idaho). Someone on salary still can only
work 40 hours per week unless they are a manager, meaning they have 3
people under them, or they are a professional position (lawyer,
doctor, etc.).

One of my friends owns a drafting company. Had everyone on Salary for 2
years and was working them 50+ hours per week. They fired a guy and so he
turned them into the Dept Labor. After the audit, they had to pay back
overtime to everyone (costing them almost $40,000 for the 2 year period).

We have guys on call. If they have to go after hours, we give them time
off during the payperiod so they aren't over 40 hours.

Put 'em on salary, that way you can work them as much as you want without
guilt. ;)

I'm not a tower climber, but I'm the one on-call pretty much all the
time. In the event of a big problem, I'll usually triage it (drive to the
tower, see if it's just a power outage or something else I can't easily
fix), and if it's something for which we need the tower guy, I call him
(and he gets normal overtime pay).

Subject: [WISPA] Alvarion is Back!!!

Those who were not there, (WISPA meeting), some extremely exciting
news was released by Alvarion.
The details of the Comnet program. Clearly the most exciting news
from the show.

I can't even begin to communicate the impression that it made.
There could not have been a stronger message that they want WISPs as
their customer.
A WISP will NEVER again use the excuse that they can not afford
Alvarion.
Since this is a public list, I'll leave the details, for WISPs to
discover when checking out the program.

But I will hint by saying, it enables Alvarion for residential.
Its a pretty hard sell, NOT to switch.

Re: [WISPA] on call staff

2006-11-13 Thread Tom DeReggi
It doesn't. The only one I'm aware of that meets that requirement, (24x7
uncompensated availabilty) is the owner of a company. :-)

So have to be mor erealistic for everyone else, and improvise.

How does this relate to a person that is salaried and expected to be
available all the time?

Travis brings up a good point. the legality of it.

It difficult to implement a policiy, that is not 100% legal. If not
documented, how can one be held accountable for following it. If its
documented then you just gave your employee the abilty to win a law suit
agaisnt you, as you've admitted the policy and practice of it. So to
effectively launch an on-call policy, one must first consider the legal
ramifications and account for them. Take note that it is not
necessarilly

a requirement to pay full minimum wage for on-call duty. Just like the
airlines that pay a reduced wage when they are on-call. However,
conflicting law infers that if an employee is on-call, they must be paid
for

being on-call even if they are not performing work and jsut on standby.
The

exact interpretation of these law really depends on what duties they have
when they are on-call.

Expecially if they don't get paid to do it, or more so
if
they do get paid overtime. If you pay overtime, they go onsite when they
may

not normally have to, to rake up some extra top dollar pay. If you don't
pay, then they are likely to respond slower to outages, such as wait until
morning to investigate instead of when it actually happens at night. And
what do you do when, an on-call tech responds 10 hours late, because they
went away with their family anyway? How would you know, since you left it
up

to someone else to monitor when outages occured. By the time you find out
that the tech responded to slow (the next day), its to late and nothing
you

can do able it to correct it sooner. And can you complain when they were
expected to do it for free?

What I do is I take the off-hours monitoring duty personally, so I can
qualify when a site visit is required or not on the weekend. Then I call
the

tech on-call and make them go out, if needed. I often do the off-hour
repair personally, jsut because I want to save on over-time pay, and want
the techs to get some rest and fun, because I work them hard during the
week, and they need the rest. I recently offloaded the night monitoring
to

one of our techs that I trust, in trade that he would not have to do the
truck rolls on the week end. But I always have a different tech
responsible
for checking for outages in the mornings than the tech on night on-call
duty

so I have appropriate checks and balances.

I have not found a perfect system yet, jsut because we do not have enough
staff to share the duty adequately and still ahve checks and balances,
where

there is a second person on-call in case the first person missed it.
What
I plan to do is to start scheduling overlapping schedules so more of the
day

is handled by paid staff, and less time to be covered by on-call duty.

Hi,

That's not legal (at least not in Idaho). Someone on salary still can
only

work 40 hours per week unless they are a manager, meaning they have 3
people under them, or they are a professional position (lawyer,
doctor, etc.).

One of my friends owns a drafting company. Had everyone on Salary for 2
years and was working them 50+ hours per week. They fired a guy and so he
turned them into the Dept Labor. After the audit, they had to pay back
overtime to everyone (costing
