Re: [WISPA] Anyone using Exalt radios????

2006-11-14 Thread Bob Moldashel
One of the things that is really unique is that they have a 2 year
warranty for a carrier class backhaul product. You don't have to buy the
second year, just fill out the registration card. And there is also a
written out-of-box failure policy. None of this stuff about depending
who you know and how important you are. ;-)

We have installed a handful of the one piece outdoor 5Ghz links and
they were a piece of cake. Some real thought went into these. Really
nice stuff...

Spectras ara vailable on 5.4 too , tho not the same flexibility as having a
triband radio ...

Spectras also have GPS sync, plus fiber interfaces

Spectras have the dual pol. Dynamic DFS thingy... wich it's the coolest tool

And they are owned by Motorola!!!

The Exal radios looks promising, the only drawback it's the channel size for
full speed 64 mhz,

A few things to consider

The Exalt does the whole 5 Ghz. band, including 5.3 and 5.4

It also allows you to set the center channel on any 1 Mhz. division.

It has GPS syncing so you only need to use one channel for a handful of
radios at the same site. (Try doing that with Orthogon)

It is capable of elctronically switching polarities like the Trango
radios do. (yeah,yeah...something like the Orthogon).

And finally...they are not owned by MOTOROLA! :-)

FYI...I have installed approx. 11 Orthogon Spectra links. I have had
power supply failures 5 times. I just waited 12 days for a replacement
power supply after ordering it from the distributor. The last link we
ordered was missing part of the mounting bracket. One of the mounting
brackets did not have one of the holes tapped. Not fun when you are
onsite for an install.

I still like Orthogon. I just like Exalt better.

[WISPA] Point-to-point EiRP limits on 5.3 GHz

2006-11-14 Thread Jack Unger
Does anyone know if there is a point-to-point EIRP exception on 5.3 GHz
as there is on 5.8 GHz?

For example, on 5.8 -

5.725 – 5.850 ISM band may use greater than 6 dBi antenna with no
reduction in transmitter power (point-to-point only)

5.725 – 5.825 U-NII band may use up to a 23 dBi gain antenna
(point-to-point only)

Anything similar on 5.3 ???

[WISPA] Trango at ISPCON

2006-11-14 Thread Tom DeReggi

Trango repeated its WISP summit at ISPCON again this year as well.
The purpose was to ask WISPs what they need in next generation products, and
disclose upcomming products.
It was also exciting to learn more about their next generation WIMax
product. The advantage of that platform, is its early enough in the
development process that there is still time for Trango to add features that
WISPs requested, to make it a better solution. A lot of neet ideas were
pitched, hopefully Trango will implement some of them, to compliment their
offering. Trango's approach is to take WiMax chipset, with the option to run
a standard WiMax MAC, but shipped default with Trango's modified Firmware to
fit nicely in line with existing Trango gear firmware features and tools.
This would also have the side effect of giving WiMax features at Lower
prices than WIMax competitors, and more unique differenciators than
competitors by not being limited to standards. My perception, is that the
10mbps solution would continue as the low cost options, but the WIMax line
would be the high end product delivering higher capacity / Higher feature
gear, that would be priced somewhere between 5830 and Fox lines. My
understanding is that Live versions were displayed at Wimax World. Its not
appropriate to discuss exact features yet, for obvious competitive reasons
of a not yet released product. It could be a real exciting product, and
something worth keeping an eye on as it develops. Unfortuneately though,
this is not an option for us today, as the product has not yet been
released, and probably won't for about 6 month. (Disclaimer: not an
authorized time prediction listed)

The reason I did not post details on the List, is that the pricing and

what part of it was suppsoed to be confidential or Open to disclose.

The program is for the existing VL product line, the one you always
wanted
to buy, but thought you could never afford.
There are volume commits involved, but they are VERY minimal. The Plan
is
not just about pricing, it also includes additonal support for WISPs via

was so
excited. This program is something that never could have happened

WISPs, and went to bat for us.

What I liked about the program is that it came from the principle of how
can
they help us, help ourselves as a group, and ultimately reach higher
volume
of product deployment (For mutual benefit). Understand that this is Best
of
Breed product, at the top of the pyramid, so sod course set realistic
expectations that their is no justification for the program to compete
against $99 CB3 boxes. But it now allows a WISP to make decisions based
on
whether the features and design of the product is the best product for
the
job, rather than having to make selection based on price. It allows a
WISP
to step up their operations a couple notches, and puts FCC certified /
carrier class gear within their reach.

Disclaimer: The fact that I am impressed by the Alvarion program, and
without a doubt will be participating in this program personally, does
not
take away the value that other manufacturer's products may also deliver.

But I now can make my decissions based on the merit of the individual

Re: [WISPA] Trango at ISPCON

2006-11-14 Thread Jeffrey Thomas
Brian,

Standards don't really matter unless you have interop on the mac layer as
well as QOS.With just MAC and phy layer interoperability, the only thing
that will be supported is simple bridging and routing when you use seperate
vendor's CPE and Base stations. btw, no one is currently supporting QOS
interoperability.

Also currently there is only one company that has released 5.8 product
using 802.16a technology and is expected to be interoperable should other
vendors roll out product utilizing a 10mhz channel width. The whole Wimax
revolution really doesn't matter to Wisp's in the US if unlicensed bands are
never expected to be supported.

For sure, some WISPs will choose to use the AU-S as a method of

Also currently there is only one company that has released 5.8 product
using 802.16a technology and is expected to be interoperable should other
vendors roll out product utilizing a 10mhz channel width. The whole Wimax

Trango repeated its WISP summit at ISPCON again this year as well.
The purpose was to ask WISPs what they need in next generation
products, and disclose upcomming products.
It was also exciting to learn more about their next generation WIMax
product. The advantage of that platform, is its early enough in the
development process that there is still time for Trango to add
features that WISPs requested, to make it a better solution. A lot of
neet ideas were pitched, hopefully Trango will implement some of
them, to compliment their offering. Trango's approach is to take WiMax
chipset, with the option to run a standard WiMax MAC, but shipped
default with Trango's modified Firmware to fit nicely in line with
existing Trango gear firmware features and tools. This would also have
the side effect of giving WiMax features at Lower prices than WIMax
competitors, and more unique differenciators than competitors by not
being limited to standards.

I thought one main advantage of WiMax was the standards. By not
following standards the customers ARE limited. Everyone knows that
every install is different. I thought with WiMax we might actually get
to pick the right gear for each job. Can't do that without standards.
They only want to keep you locked in. I hate being locked into one
thing. You can never use better gear when it comes out because you are
locked into old crap.

My perception, is that the 10mbps solution would continue as the low
cost options, but the WIMax line would be the high end product
delivering higher capacity / Higher feature gear, that would be priced
somewhere between 5830 and Fox lines. My understanding is that Live
versions were displayed at Wimax World. Its not appropriate to
discuss exact features yet, for obvious competitive reasons of a not
yet released product. It could be a real exciting product, and
something worth keeping an eye on as it develops. Unfortuneately
though, this is not an option for us today, as the product has not yet
been released, and probably won't for about 6 month. (Disclaimer: not
an authorized time prediction listed)

The reason I did not post details on the List, is that the pricing and
program is a deal designed and offered ONLY to WISPs, and I was not sure

what part of it was suppsoed to be confidential or Open to disclose.

The program is for the existing VL product line, the one you always
wanted
to buy, but thought you could never afford.
There are volume commits involved, but they are VERY minimal. The Plan
is
not just about pricing, it also includes additonal support for WISPs via

was so
excited. This program is something that never could have happened
without
someone like Patrick Leary behind it, who fully understands the needs of

But I now can make my decissions based on the merit of the individual
product lines, for the appropriate locations. Alvarion is not the
appropriate product for all my needs, but I know where I do need it, and

I've been waiting for this day for that opportunity.

Re: [WISPA] Trango at ISPCON

2006-11-14 Thread Tom DeReggi
No not the case. The fact that a peice of equipment can instantly be flashed
with a Compliant firmware, enables a WISP not to be held hostage by the
specific Manufacturer, and can change anyday to the compliant WiMax
standard, if they find it to be more advantageous to them. In other words
physical installation labor or equipment change would not be necessary, so
one could convert easilly.

There are many reasons not to use compliant WiMax.
And there are many benefits to WiMax hardware, even when propriatary
firmware is used.

Most WISPs state that they want lower price that high volume gives, and they
state they want higher features to make them more competitive.
But interoperabilty, has little value to most WISPs, as most WISPs want to
standardize on product anyway.

Not waiting for complaince, adds many benefits. Quicker availabilty
bypassing lengthly certification processes. Advanced features, that would
take ages for the committe to make standard. Taking advantage of patented
or propritary intellectual property that is more advantageous that would
never be given to the public domain or standards committee. Fastest Time to
market is one of the biggest benefits for a WISP. I predict Trango's WIMax
will beat most other vendors to the table in 5.8Ghz in the US.

The advantage of using WiMax hardware, is taking advantage of economy of
scale, to have better price and better support behind the solution. As long
as the hardware is compliant and flashable, what firmware you put on is
irrelevant. Its no different than buying a WRAP board and having the choice
of whether you put Mikrotik or Star-OS on it, or even your own firmware.

I'm not putting my reputation on the line to specifically endorse what
product option will be the preferred product by Summer 2007, but I will say
that interoperabilty is the least of my desires from a manufacturers. What I
want is the gear that solves my problems and allows me to be the most
competitive at the lowest cost and the faster to market time frame. Thats
one of the reasons we are also excited about the AlvarionComnet program, it
gives us abilty to improve our offering today, with a mature tested product.

The WiMax interoperabilty is only important for those going after mobility.
We are a pure FIXED location play. I personally believe that staying away
from mobility offerings, makes us less of a threat to the Telcos and Cell
phone companies, and will likely have less competitive pressures from them,
because of it, and by building for Fixed (better design) we are more likely
to survive their interference.

Its also important to understand, why a new Trango product might want to be
considered. People who bought Trango in the first place didn;t do it for
interoperabilty, but the extra value Trango intellectual propery provided
over WIFI an interoperable solution. Just like Trango Fox was like WIFI on
Steroids, Trango WiMax will be like WiMax on Steroids.

Disclaimer: My post is speculation, as final product features/options have
not been released.

YEP. That was a key point not mentioned in the Commnet brief.
The lower cost APs, will allow a WISP to expand their network footprint
quicker, without waiting on a long sector ROI first.
The idea is not to shaft Alvarion out of their end game revenue that they
deserve, as a WISPs that uses thateir gear for a fully populated network,
can well justifiy its cost.
And more likely they will get there, if they have quality gear to help them
on their way.
This program is a program to help a WISP grow, and manage their costs
propoirtional to their received revenue, not their unreached potential.

Its that mentality that I liked in the program.

Sorry, I have not responded sooner guy, but I kept missing opportunities
to
connect to the Internet.

The Plan
is
not just about pricing, it also includes additonal support for WISPs via

online content and such. When you learn about it, you will see why I
was so
excited. This program is something that never could have happened
without
someone like Patrick Leary behind it, who fully understands the needs of

But I now can make my decissions based on the merit of the individual
product lines, for the appropriate locations. Alvarion is not the
appropriate product for all my needs, but I know where I do need it, and

I've been waiting for this day for that opportunity.

Well, CTI has similar programs for Motorola product that they call ZERO

committed volume.

But the excitement of the Alvarion program, is not just the price, but that

BTW, we should note that on the AU-S, the capacity is not constrained
since it supports the full 32+mbps net from the start. It is only
limited in terms of attachments, supporting up to 25 connections of the
3 or 6Mbps CPEs. We've got lots of rural customers for whom this is what
was requested. Those 25 six mbps or 3mbps subs will be flying though.

This model, assuming you joined the AlvarionCOMNET and if you had 25
subs on each of three sectors on one cell would result in an
infrastructure PLUS CPE payback of less than 9 months assuming only a
$39.95/month subscriber fee. So, including a truck roll, you could get a
1 year or less payback off $39.95/month fees providing true 3mbps
down/2mbps up. And you could do this with top of the line gear that will
result in much improved operations and MUCH higher equity value of the
network should you ever want to sell.

[WISPA] Re: Anyone using Exalt radios????

2006-11-14 Thread Lakeland
Personally I couldn't be happier. They work as expected and stated. They
have relatively straight forward GUI interfaces, you can move the center of
the channel to any 1 Mhz. division, it works on 5.3, you can get a straight
indoor only unit or an outdoor unit with integral antenna or N connectors,
they have 2 year warranty. OOB replacement guarantee, the inegral antenna
has electronic polarity control, it can syc all units on a msite so you can
use one channel, the gps option is very reasonable and you don't need a
central controller or cabling between radios. User defined latency and
channel bandwidth as well as free upgrade to 5.4 when it becomes available.

The advertised throughput on a 200 Mhz radio is 100 Mb true throughput in
each direction port to port. The radio throughput is based on a 64 Mhz
channel.

Now lets address the Motorola Orthogon for a minute. It has no GPS syncing.
It has no integral fiber interface. The fiber kit is an option that
allows for cable runs in excess of POE lengths but you still need external
power. I can put a media converter and external power on a Exalt radio
also.

As far as the bandwidth is concerned the Orthogon still uses 60 MHz to give
full bandwidth. It just uses 30 on vertical and 30 on horizontal.

On a positive note for Exalt the C/I is much better on the Exalt radio which
ultimately guarantees better distance in noisy environments.

The pricin on the Connectronics site is MSRP. You can get it quite a bit
lower...

Err.. 5.4 experimental licensing ..., I would love to try some exalt radios,
Im only concern is on the channel size for big bandwidth.. 64 mhz is way too
much, on the side note the spectras 30 mhz dual polarity channel is very
flexible cause you can set one end to tx on one slice of spectrum, wheres
the other end can tx on other slice ... really handy in noisy areas ..

How much is the price below mrsp ? 20% ?

And they are owned by Motorola!!!

The Exal radios looks promising, the only drawback it's the channel size
for
 full speed 64 mhz,

The advertised throughput on a 200 Mhz radio is 100 Mb true throughput in
each direction port to port. The radio throughput is based on a 64 Mhz
channel.

OK so lets compare to Trango Atlas or Alvarion Backhaul (which has similar
metrics) with equivellent speed models. Taking that maybe only 1% of my
market could pull off a 64Mhz channel.

Exalt Specs... 200rating @ 64Mhz = 100 mbps then
100rating @ 32Mhz = 50 mbps... @ $16,000 list.
This of course being best case based on noise level
and acheivalbe modulation.

Trango Specs 54rating @ 20Mhz = 45 mbps, for $3000.
So, if I bonded two Atlas Links, I'd get equivelent performance to the high
performance version at 30% less spectrum use, and 1/5 th the cost.
Now of Course Trango, is Ethernet only, and does not have the wayside T1
support or Fiber/GPS features. And there is value to that for someone
offering Voice services also.

All I'm saying is that the street price sure better be a lot lower than the
list price listed, as you suggeset it is. The second you are in the
$15,000 range, you might as well be doing licensed for the extra $1000 bucks
or two to make it survivable.

Personally I couldn't be happier. They work as expected and stated. They
have relatively straight forward GUI interfaces, you can move the center
of the channel to any 1 Mhz. division, it works on 5.3, you can get a
straight indoor only unit or an outdoor unit with integral antenna or N
connectors, they have 2 year warranty. OOB replacement guarantee, the
inegral antenna has electronic polarity control, it can syc all units on a
msite so you can use one channel, the gps option is very reasonable and
you don't need a central controller or cabling between radios. User
defined latency and channel bandwidth as well as free upgrade to 5.4 when
it becomes available.
The advertised throughput on a 200 Mhz radio is 100 Mb true throughput in

Now lets address the Motorola Orthogon for a minute. It has no GPS
syncing. It has no integral fiber interface. The fiber kit is an option
that allows for cable runs in excess of POE lengths but you still need
external power. I can put a media converter and external power on a Exalt
radio also.
As far as the bandwidth is concerned the Orthogon still uses 60 MHz to
give full bandwidth. It just uses 30 on vertical and 30 on horizontal.
On a positive note for Exalt the C/I is much better on the Exalt radio
which ultimately guarantees better distance in noisy environments.
The pricin on the Connectronics site is MSRP. You can get it quite a bit
lower...

Never heard of them before until now...just talked to a sales rep and
got unnoficially ~$12k. It looks like software defined radio so they
probably have the capability to develop firmware to do a lot of the
things that Orthogon did. He said they don't currently have a spectrum
management feature or a 'lite' product like orthogon but likely will be
incorporating something into upcoming software releases. For error
correction they use variable mod. and FEC, software polarization
selection, a few other things. Either way a product to keep an eye on...

If you use your equation you really need 4 Trango radios which is 5 x

Not only that, but the Atlas isn't capable of 45Mbps in any form much less
FDX. Most we've ever seen out of an Atlas is maybe 20Mbps HDX with very
clean air. Add a little noise to the equation and that puppy will auto-rate
itself down to the 10Mbps neighborhood in a heartbeat.

Believe me these up to or best effort radios are tempting, but until you
deploy a few $15k - $30k PtP radio sets that actually produce what they
claim you won't understand what we're talking about.

When I say you I'm not directing that at anyone in particular just a
general comment.

Best,

Brad

[WISPA] New Principle Member of WISPA - Travis Johnson and Microserv

2006-11-14 Thread John Scrivner
We have seen quite a bit of interest in new membership in WISPA lately.
I am proud to announce that Travis Johnson has added his name to the
list of WISP operators who have joined WISPA. Travis has a very
successful operation and I am sure his involvement in WISPA will be
valuable to us and to him as well. Please join me in welcoming Travis
Johnson and his WISP Microserv. Here is a little background on Travis
and Microserv:

Microserv started as a dial-up ISP in 1994. We began providing wireless
service in 1997, DSL service in 2001 and fiber-optic service in 2003. We
currently provide fixed wireless service covering 25,000 square miles of
southeastern Idaho and have over 3,000 current wireless subscribers. Our
entire backbone is wireless with links from 5 miles to 73 miles and
using 5.3ghz to 38ghz.

I designed and installed the entire infrastructure (over 60 operating
repeater locations) and continue to service and support them while also
running the day to day operations of a company with 25 employees. We are
growing at a rate of 60+ wireless customers per month and continue to
add new services and features for our existing customers. I am excited
to be a member of WISPA and hope to help the organization grow and
benefit the industry.

Thanks,

Travis Johnson, President

Re: [WISPA] Re: Anyone using Exalt radios????

2006-11-14 Thread Tom DeReggi

Brad,

I'm aware of your Atlas experience. We've gotten Full 45mbps out of an Atlas
numerous times.
However, I admit, often that does require antenna size upgrade, and that
needs to be factored into the end cost for comparison.

Add a little noise to the equation and that puppy will auto-rate
itself down to the 10Mbps neighborhood in a heartbeat.

Thats why you turn off auto-rate, and turn on ARQ.

I guess I just never get that excited about buying a radio that costs more
than a decent car. (when a car technically is much more expensive to make)

Best,

Brad

Tom,

You're gonna bond 2 atlas links and get close to 100 Mb full
duplex? How is that??

The 200 Mb Exalt is 100 Mb TX /100 Mb RX

If you use your equation you really need 4 Trango radios which is 5 x
$3000 = $15000 and that will give you 100 mb with 50/50 MIR. Not to say
what you would use up in spectrum (20 Mhz. x 5 = 100 Mhz..OK...you
could play with polarity with good antennas and probably do better).

So the Exalt doesn't look that expensive after all :-)

And BTW: I was told to expect MIR control for asymetrical bandwidth soon...

OK so lets compare to Trango Atlas or Alvarion Backhaul (which has
similar metrics) with equivellent speed models. Taking that maybe only
1% of my market could pull off a 64Mhz channel.

Exalt Specs... 200rating @ 64Mhz = 100 mbps then
100rating @ 32Mhz = 50 mbps... @ $16,000 list.
This of course being best case based on noise
level and acheivalbe modulation.

Trango Specs 54rating @ 20Mhz = 45 mbps, for $3000.
So, if I bonded two Atlas Links, I'd get equivelent performance to the
high performance version at 30% less spectrum use, and 1/5 th the cost.
Now of Course Trango, is Ethernet only, and does not have the wayside
T1 support or Fiber/GPS features. And there is value to that for
someone offering Voice services also.

All I'm saying is that the street price sure better be a lot lower
than the list price listed, as you suggeset it is. The second you are
in the $15,000 range, you might as well be doing licensed for the
extra $1000 bucks or two to make it survivable.

Personally I couldn't be happier. They work as expected and stated.
They have relatively straight forward GUI interfaces, you can move
the center of the channel to any 1 Mhz. division, it works on 5.3,
you can get a straight indoor only unit or an outdoor unit with
integral antenna or N connectors, they have 2 year warranty. OOB
replacement guarantee, the inegral antenna has electronic polarity
control, it can syc all units on a msite so you can use one channel,
the gps option is very reasonable and you don't need a central
controller or cabling between radios. User defined latency and
channel bandwidth as well as free upgrade to 5.4 when it becomes
available.
The advertised throughput on a 200 Mhz radio is 100 Mb true
throughput in each direction port to port. The radio throughput is
based on a 64 Mhz channel.
Now lets address the Motorola Orthogon for a minute. It has no GPS
syncing. It has no integral fiber interface. The fiber kit is an
option that allows for cable runs in excess of POE lengths but you
still need external power. I can put a media converter and external
power on a Exalt radio also.
As far as the bandwidth is concerned the Orthogon still uses 60 MHz
to give full bandwidth. It just uses 30 on vertical and 30 on
horizontal.
On a positive note for Exalt

Yeah - plug it in and turn it on before you try to run off of batteries :)

I believe I remember some discussion on this list on connecting an
external
battery to an APC UPS. I'm in the middle of doing it right now and am
having problems. The UPS just beep continuously with the 'bad battery'
light on. I'm using a Lifeline deep cycle battery. Any ideas?

Re: [WISPA] DHCP with a twist

2006-11-14 Thread Sam Tetherow
Being five days late on this you have probably already solved it, but
just in case

The CB3 will request a DHCP address with it's MAC address (assuming it
is set to DHCP). When the PC or router behind the CB3 requests a DHCP
lease you will see the MAC for that device. The DHCP REQUEST message
actually contains the MAC address it is requesting an IP for, it is not
just assumed to be the MAC address that is seen making the request. The
biggest issue I could think of with this setup is when the customers
device changes (new router or NIC) they will have to call into the NOC
and the DHCP assignment will have to be changed.

As part of the ongoing (does it ever stop?) efforts to make a Better
Network, I've finally started using private subnets where appropriate.

I'd love to be able to better automate some parts of my network, though,
and I'm not sure how to do both of 'em at the same time. (Right now,
substantially our whole network uses static IP assignments everywhere,
and that's not really viable long-term.)

My ideal scenario would be something like this:

* The AP runs a DHCP server and talks to a RADIUS server (that's easy)
* When a client associates, do a RADIUS lookup to see if they should be
allowed to associate (that's easy too)
* Give the CPE an IP address from one subnet, then give whatever else
is there an IP from a different subnet (that's the tricky part)

This is made even more complicated by the fact that many of our CPE are
Senao CB3 units, which do MAC cloning and I don't think you can turn it
off. (Basically, both the CPE and the customer's router, or whatever,
show up in my tower as having the CPE's MAC.)

If I weren't trying to conserve public IP space, this would be easy
enough - just give the CPE one IP address and the customer's gear a
second one. But there's really no reason for my radios to be visible to
the public Internet, and it's wasteful of those sweet sweet IPs.

I know there's a solution to this problem, because that's basically how
most cable modem setups work. (Annoyingly, I can't get my company's
wireless Internet at home, so I've got cable modem there.) The cable
modem is a bit smarter than a CB3, though, thanks to DOCSIS. I'd like
to do all this at the tower, instead of having to buy (or invent) new
CPE if possible.

Is this even possible?
