[WISPA] SF WiFi: Mayor looses 1st Full vote on EarthLink Google WiFi initiative, Supervisor Daly asks for $10M for a City owned WiFi solution

2007-02-14 Thread Kimo Crossman

Tuesday at the Full Board meeting, after an impassioned speech by Supervisor
McGoldrick and Daly requesting a simple continuance on their cosponsored (also
Ammiano and Mirkarimi) legislation which asks for serious consideration of
Nonprofit or Municipally owned WiFi solutions by the IT Department, the Board
of Supervisors (in a vote that is seen as an indication of how the board will
vote on the EarthLink WiFi contract) approved on a 6-5 count McGoldrick's
request to continue the resolution to March 20th.

During the debate, Supervisor Daly, Chair of the Budget and Finance committee,
asked the Budget Analyst to prepare a $10M budget supplemental for a City WiFi
solution.

The EarthLink Google camp in conjunction with DTIS (IT Department) pushed to
have the vote today in hopes of shutting considerations down the
Municipal/Nonprofits options. Significant backing for alternatives was
provided by the independent Budget Analyst's Fiscal Feasibility of Municipal
WiFi report which had raised many concerns about the consideration of all
options, quality of the digital inclusion coverage of the EarthLink solution,
privacy, conflicts of interest, parity of deal compared with what other cities
are receiving and the potential for a 17-year defacto Franchise with little
Board of Supervisor's governance.

With Community Choice Aggregation (Public Power) in the air, the recently
released draft municipal fiber study and the continued bad feelings over the
extension of the Comcast Franchise, voices concerned about ongoing
privatization of city functions and assets have been given a loudspeaker.

McGoldrick announced plans to draft additional legislation on this matter and
there will be hearings on the basket of Budget supplementals in Daly's Budget
and Finance committee. Lastly, the independent Budget Analyst will be
preparing a detailed analysis of the EarthLink contract on it's merits before
consideration by the full board.

[WISPA] Trango 5850 FOX to 5830 AP at close range

2007-02-14 Thread Don Annas
We are running the Trango units (fairly successfully) at most of our
locations. We have a new client that we turned up about a week ago. This
is a new AP and this is the only client on that AP. The distance is
literally across the street and we have a fantastic signal. The loopback
tests shows a perfect connection with no packet loss at all.

The problem… For an unknown reason, this unit is dropping out of
registration for 12-25 minutes on an average of once per day. There is
nothing common about the time of day that it drops. We have ran surveys
before, during, and after this loss of association, and the noise floor and
surrounding channels show a peak of a -90 or better.

We are running the latest firmware on the AP and the SU.

We have replaced the SU with one running a slightly older firmware.

We have played with some of the power settings.

… and still no luck with this issue.

Are their any tricks or best practices for a link this close? Is their a
solution that I would not have this problem with. This customer needs a
minimum of 5mb up and 5mb down and will be scaling to 10mb in about 2
months.

Thanks.

Email Changed the Internet... Video Will Change the World!

Email has become the fastest growing form of communication. Every day billions
of emails are sent, and that's just the beginning. Experts say that the number
of emails sent will more than double in the next few years. Some say that it
will ultimately grow to as many as 100 billion a day!

The problem is that with all that email being sent, it's difficult to make your
message stand above the clutter. No doubt you've had your important messages
overlooked or even misunderstood. So you may have begun including pictures and
images to help convey your meaning and make impact. But that still doesn't
solve the problem!

Why is this? Perhaps because the true power of a message is derived from visual
and auditory cues. Consider these facts:

 a.. 55% of a message meaning is derived from facial expression;

b.. 38% of a message meaning is derived from gestures, body language, etc.
It's also important to note when conveying an important message:

   PEOPLE ONLY REMEMBER:

 a.. 10% of what they read;

 b.. 20% of what they hear;

 c.. 30% of what they see;

 d.. 50% of what they see and hear together;

e.. And 80% of what they see, hear, and do.
It is a technology that allows people to bridge the gap of communication by allowing a face to face experience.

Streaming media is arguably the most powerful communication tool in the market
place today. Communicating by video mail is fast, effective and inexpensive.

So what is the solution? People online need fully integrated streaming video
products for their communications because Video says it betters.

Now everyone can easily avoid miscommunication and to bridge the gap of
communication by allowing a face to face experience over the Internet with
video email, video instant chat, and even a live webcasting solution.

[WISPA] multi-radio Wi-Fi base stations

2007-02-14 Thread Matt Liotta
We don't do much Wi-Fi, so I figured I would ask the list. If I wanted
to deploy a number of Wi-Fi radios at the same location what kind of
setups are available? I am looking for something where I can deploy one
physical box that has multiple radios as opposed to a single box per
radio. Ideally, it would be something modular where I can have a
variable number of radio interfaces by simply adding cards.

Does anything like that exist?

Re: [WISPA] multi-radio Wi-Fi base stations

2007-02-14 Thread Jack Unger

Matt,

I advise using only thoroughly tested hardware. Often when using
multiple radios in a single enclosure there will be interference issues
that will only become apparent when the radios become heavily loaded and
have to deliver high throughput. If you deploy without full throughput
testing (either your custom-built product or someone else's product) you
may think everything is fine until the throughput load(s) start building
up and then you'll find that the box will not deliver the throughput
that you expected from the multiple radios. This interference happens
because of leakage from card to card. Even though cards are on different
frequencies, enough wireless energy can leak across cards to desensitize
the receivers, causing packet loss, packet retransmissions, and reduced
throughput.

I expect you will get several comments from people who will advise you
that they have several radios in one box and it's working great.
Either they have a good engineering staff that knew how to carefully
engineer and design the entire box with excellent RF shielding between
the multiple cards or (much more likely) they do not understand the
issues of RF leakage, receiver overload, and the consequent throughput
reduction and they HAVE NOT TESTED their solution under conditions of
heavy loading so they don't realize the shortcomings of their design.

In summary, it may be more inconvenient to use separate (well shielded)
metal enclosures for different Wi-Fi (or other) radios but using
separate enclosures will give you a MUCH HIGHER CHANCE of achieving full
throughput from each radio. Throughput is of course what customers pay
WISPs to deliver so WISPs are advised to consider the costs of both
technician labor and (lost) business reputation when making
multiple-radio Wi-Fi hardware decisons.

Respectfully,
   jack

When I look at the leasing brochure they list wireless broadband
providers and cellular telephone carriers as a you must negotiate
rate.

So.. do any of you have existing leases? Are you willing to share
ballpark figures for leasing space?

Thanks!

will call on you from time to time to meet with folks in D.C. if you
do not mind. I will be there next week myself. Here is a bit of
information about them:

DC Access was started in 1999 by Matt Wade as a dial-up and web
hosting provider. DC Access began providing wireless broadband in 2003
and have steadily grown this part of the business. We still provide
nationwide dial-up and web hosting. I joined Matt in 2004, making the
business a true husband and wife team. We are located in Washington,
DC and provide wireless broadband in the 2.4Ghz band to residents,
both single and multi-dwelling buildings and businesses on Capitol

be an invaluable source of information.

RE: [WISPA] Trango 5850 FOX to 5830 AP at close range

2007-02-14 Thread Don Annas
The building the SU is on is not much lower. It appears to have good line
of site and the signal is a -60 on both sides. Additionally, when the link
is up, it's perfect. One thing that I will note is the AP is only a few
feet off the roof and about 12 ft from the edge due to the landlords
requirements. Even though, it is clear LOS even an inch off the roof

How high is the AP? Maybe your under the signal.
Can you install another SU for testing purposes further away?

When you say your running the latest firmware does that mean the beta
su fw? I had one doing the same thing and the beta fixed it.

literally across the street and we have a fantastic signal. The
loopback
tests shows a perfect connection with no packet loss at all.

The problem… For an unknown reason, this unit is dropping out of
registration for 12-25 minutes on an average of once per day. There is
nothing common about the time of day that it drops. We have ran surveys
before, during, and after this loss of association, and the noise floor
 and
surrounding channels show a peak of a -90 or better.

We are running the latest firmware on the AP and the SU.

We have replaced the SU with one running a slightly older firmware.

We have played with some of the power settings.

Are their any tricks or best practices for a link this close? Is their

Re: [WISPA] Mikrotik RB and Cisco Switch port sync problems

2007-02-14 Thread Dylan Oliver

Mike,

I have just confirmed that the 3 GE expansion card for the Migrus uses 3x
RTL8169/RTL8110. The built-in FE port is VIA Rhine II.

The 3 GE Jetway card appears to use the same chipset (Realtek RTL81108-32)
according to *http://tinyurl.com/ysoxjx*.

The 3 FE Jetway card uses RTL8100C chipset. Do you know if this is supported
by Mikrotik?

In any event I question the ability of the expansion card's bus to pass 3
Gbps at wirespeed.

RE: [WISPA] WA State WISPS

2007-02-14 Thread Forbes Mercy
We negotiated a contract with DNR and they are sticklers about some pretty
weird things. They wanted a web cam on their elk, eagle and bull moose sites,
oh and they wanted it for nothing. I said let me use that tower to resell
business to DOT for traffic cam and control They said their policy is I can't
derive revenue from something on state land. I finally got their legal
department to resell but their terms were ridiculous and they still wanted
percentages.

Finally they said our county government is going to come out here and under the
law we feel we have better footing working with other government agencies. The
laughable thing is they will likely end up paying a bundle to the county for
the service compared to what was going to be basically free/trade with us.
Government, sigh. I am a bit curious where you operate from, I didn't know
their were other WISPA members besides myself and Marlon in Washington.

[WISPA] Marlon and WISPA

2007-02-14 Thread Forbes Mercy

I just wanted to let the list know that Marlon from Odessa, WA came down today,
a two and a half hour drive (too foggy for me to fly up and get him) and taught
my new installers how to properly do couplings on coax and cat 5 plus helped us
move two tower antennas. He did this for considerably less pay then anyone
else but wanted to help another WISPA member.

Every day I get more value out of belonging to this group, from Form 455 to
this amazing generosity, all he asked was that if they have an emergency that
taxed his resources could I help back. I'm a retired Fire Chief and it's so
refreshing to hear someone in the Private Sector have the same approach as the
Fire Service has for loaning each others assets when things get crazy. It's a
testimony to the strength of our membership and the friendships that happen
because of it. This has reinvigoraged me for this stressful business because
when you feel your alone and the only one truly motivated for success then
someone comes along that is the same its nice to have someone to talk to who
can relate on our level.

One note to Marlon, I know you saw me do some things that would make for good
fodder on here but be warned I will fire back with my own.. lol! What a great
friend and fellow WISP I have found with Marlon, bravo to all of you for doing
what so many independent business owners never seem to do, get a long for the
common good. Thank you, Marlon!
