[WISPA] SBA Files comments
The SBA (Small Biz Admin) Office of Advocacy filed comments with the FCC about the rules of the 700 auction. (Docket 06-150) (www.sba.gov/advo/laws/comments/fcc07_0521.pdf) "revisions made to the FCC’s “designated entity” (“DE”) rules have encumbered small business participation in auctions, we recommend that the FCC stay these rules for the 700 MHz auction and rely instead upon the original DE rules." Congress established the Office of Advocacy under Pub. L. 94-305 to represent the views of small business before Federal agencies and Congress. Advocacy is an independent office within the Small Business Administration (“SBA”), so the views expressed by Advocacy do not necessarily reflect the views of the SBA or the Administration. -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/

Re: [WISPA] Man fined for stealing WiFi
I wonder if they had an acceptance page or not. If the network is wide open without an acceptance page who says where it is comming from? Around here if you walk in a coffee shop and seartch usually you can pull up several networks. I know some coffee shops that ssid is default. I use MT hotspots at mine and the customers have to at least get a user/pass to use them. A local coffee shop here recently opened and the reciept had the wep settings printed on it. They would change keys every week. Customers complained about having to use keys so after three weeks they just leave it wide open now. RE: [WISPA] Man fined for stealing WiFi
Indeed. From Joe's URL to the MICHIGAN FRAUDULENT ACCESS TO COMPUTERS, COMPUTER SYSTEMS, AND COMPUTER NETWORKS (EXCERPT)Act 53 of 1979: (6) It is a rebuttable presumption in a prosecution for a violation of section 5 that the person did not have authorization from the owner, system operator, or other person who has authority from the owner or system operator to grant permission to access the computer program, computer, computer system, or computer network or has exceeded authorization unless 1 or more of the following circumstances existed at the time of access:... (b) The accessed computer program, computer, computer system, or computer network had a pre-programmed access procedure that would display a bulletin, command, or other message before access was achieved that a reasonable person would believe identified the computer program, computer, computer system, or computer network as within the public domain. (c) Access was achieved without the use of a set of instructions, code, or computer program that bypasses, defrauds, or otherwise circumvents the pre-programmed access procedure for the computer program, computer, computer system, or computer network. These are two circumstances in this case that may indicate that such behavior is not a crime. Although, perhaps, if the splash screen said that you have to buy a cup of coffee in order to participate in access privileges, a) may not apply. . . . j o n a t h a n -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Joe Laura Sent: Monday, May 28, 2007 11:44 AM To: WISPA General List Subject: Re: [WISPA] Man fined for stealing WiFi http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(05yejm55o32tyv45uo5azgip))/mileg.aspx?page= getObject&objectName=mcl-752-797 Superior Wireless New Orleans,La. www.superior1.com -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/ -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/

Re: [WISPA] Man fined for stealing WiFi
From the article: - In fact, Milanowski was unaware the practice known as "piggybacking" was illegal, so his did a bit of legal research. "I had a feeling a law was being broken," said Milanowski. He found Michigan's "Fraudulent access to computers, computer systems, and computer networks" law, a felony punishable by five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. - I'm surprised by the law used by the prosecution. About 15 yrs ago I gave expert witness testimony in a similar case in Ohio, but Ohio's law was specific to breaking into a "government run" computer network. In the Ohio case the computer network being broken into was operated by and for public safety, and there was a clear public safety danger in people breaking in. The person who broke in was intentionally eavesdropping on public safety communications. I felt it was an appropriate and important law, but it's quite doubtful that the coffee shop's wifi could ever be considered a "government computer network," even if police may sometimes sit there using it along with other customers. Laws can vary from state to state, but I'm very surprised that any state would apply this law to a public computer network like the Internet that's actually INTENDED for public use. If the Michigan felony law is not specific to government networks I think it should be changed. I think it's wrong for a 5yr felony crime being applied to public wifi. Re: [WISPA] strange connectivity issues
I think the common thread is a corrupted TCP/IP stack in most of your situations. From techrepublic.com: There are times when a network snafu completely or partially corrupts your IP installation, which causes your TCP/IP network connection to fail or behave erratically. When this happens, the best solution is to rebuild the TCP/IP protocol stack. In previous versions of Windows, rebuilding the TCP/IP protocol stack was a simple operation--you just removed and reinstalled TCP/IP. In Windows XP, you can't remove TCP/IP because it's considered an integral part of the operating system. However, XP does come with a command-line utility--called NetShell--that allows you to reset all TCP/IP-related registry settings to their default values. The end result is essentially the same as installing a brand-new TCP/IP configuration. To reset all TCP/IP-related registry settings, open a command prompt and type the following command: /netsh int ip reset / You must specify a log file in the placeholder for this command to work. Details about which registry keys were modified will appear in the log file. I do not know if this same utility works in Vista as I am not running Vista and do not have access to it from my house. Please let us know what you find that finally fixes these issues. Scriv Marlon K. Schafer (509) 982-2181 wrote: I've had some very strange things happen of late. Wed. I hooked up a new customer. Couldn't get their system to work but my laptop did. I told them to call MacAfee and see if they could figure out what was blocking things. They ended up taking the computer to a friend's house, hooking it up to a dsl connection via a router and it worked just fine. Why would it not work via static ip but would via dhcp? Yesterday I did a Vista setup. It would connect to the wireless router just fine but would not get to the internet. I finally went into IE options and set all of them back to the defaults. What BS would have been in IE that would have told it to not use the established network connection? There were no proxy's set up either. Worked with the same router and wildblue sat. connection. I changed the wireless network name and local ip addy. Nothing else changed. It still says that the DNS suffix is wildblue.net. I can't find that anywhere in the machine. Oh yeah, the machine had both IE and firefox, neither worked. Vista is a disaster. Crappy interface. Hides everything in strange places and in non intuitive fashion. Today I get an email from a customer that can email but IE won't work. This one's dialup. Anyone else seeing strange stuff like this? Is there some bizarre windows update or virus program that's messing things up? Marlon (509) 982-2181 (408) 907-6910 (Vonage)Consulting services 42846865 (icq)WISP Operator since 1999!
