Re: [WISPA] Calling JohnnyO...

2008-05-29 Thread Tim Wolfe
If nothing else, the entire camp WTF experience was a fun one. If I
learned nothing else, I learned that riding around in JohnnyO's Suburban
at 1AM on an antenna farm is just like riding Space Mountain at Disney
world, only a HECK of lot scarier!.

On another note, the island was destroyed in most places. We worked for
two days straight replacing/repairing AP's and CPE's. One thing I have
to give Tranzeo, their radios are pretty tough. I found a few of them
ripped off their mounts laying under debris a few hundred feet away from
their original location. Replaced the CAT5 ends, plugged them in and
they came right back up!.

There was so much sand blown inland that they actually had to plow the
roads. It looked like a huge snow storm had hit the island. I hope they
never see another storm like that again.

Tim, try 251-232-9871. Remember, he is on Island

keeps telling me.
I think it is like it is 5 o'clock somewhere, give me

Re: [WISPA] Calling JohnnyO...

2008-05-29 Thread Kurt Fankhauser
Yeah, between playing dodge-the-porch-chair on the deck and Rick dropping
his tool bag on the tower crew, then the rental Jeep buried to the axle's in
cajan muck. Oh I forgot I drove that rental Jeep to New Orleans airport to
pick up Mark, left at 11pm and got back around 4am. My favorite part was
trying to walk up 50 foot of 25G and giving up on that idea and just
throwing a rope over the house and tying it to the bumper of a Toyota
pickup

[WISPA] 'family friendly' isp filtering solutions

2008-05-29 Thread rabbtux rabbtux
All,

I'm looking into providing a 'family friendly' option to our services.
Would like to provide a solution to end customers that requires no
software, just call us. I've used Dansguardian before, but it might
be difficult to mantain a 'one size fits all' proxy for customers.
Who out there is offering this type of service, and what are the
simple (and profitable) ways of doing it??

Thanks,
marshall

Re: [WISPA] 'family friendly' isp filtering solutions

2008-05-29 Thread Randy Cosby
We've been using 8e6 for ages. It just works. You don't have to put it
in-line with your traffic or set it as a proxy, so it's not a single
point of failure. It can sit on a switch "monitor" port and just sniff
all traffic going through that switch. If it finds something to block,
it will preempt/hijack the reply packet and redirect to a block page.

We are using RADIUS and PPPOE, so we can even set it to only block
certain users, and define their profiles (ie: some may "need" myspace,
others won't). If you don't use radius, you can have it block by IP.

It's costly to get started, but we've been quite profitable with it.

Only downside is if you have a customer whose traffic doesn't go past
the filtering box you can't filter him. That's where a software
solution comes in. I think they have one now that actually talks to
the main filtering box, but we haven't bothered with it.

At the risk of starting another one of those famous flamewars, is this
(legally speaking) a sound idea? If you start modifying customers'
traffic, even if it's at their request, doesn't that put you at risk of
losing common-carrier protection if someone paying for filtering still
sees naked women or other things they don't want to see?

I promise this isn't a troll - I really am not too familiar with the law
in this area, aside from the classic cases (Stratton Oakmont vs Prodigy,
Section 230 of the CDA, and so on), and I'm certainly not a lawyer.

[WISPA] [Fwd: May 29, 2008 - FCC Committee Status Report]

2008-05-29 Thread Jack Unger
Forwarded

The recent thoughtful and lively discussions about WISP use of TV White
Space underscores more than ever the need for effective WISPA advocacy
with Congress and with the FCC. I want to take this opportunity to
update all of you on how the work of WISPA's FCC Committee is progressing.

First, I want to express my thanks and my gratitude to the following
WISPA members who have recently volunteered (or in some cases
"re-enlisted") to work on one or more of the new FCC Committee Workgroups.

Brian Webster
Carl Stevenson
Jim Garrett
John McDowell
Kyle Duren
John Scrivner
Dan Lubar
Steve Lane
Stephen Coran
Edward Gabrelian
Marlon Schaffer
Dave Hulsebus
Tony Morella
Paul Benner
Tom DeReggi

NOTE 1: If you were (or are) a member of the FCC Committee but you don't
see your name on the above list, please contact me as soon as possible
to let me know that you are still interested in playing an active role
on the Committee.

NOTE 2: Participation on the FCC Committee IS limited to WISPA members.
If you would like to participate and if you have been thinking of
joining, this would be a good time to sign up as either a Vendor,
Principal or Associate member here . If you
have questions about membership, please direct them to the WISPA Board
here .

Although most of the following twelve new Workgroups now have at least
two and in some cases as many as eight members we still need more help.
Please take a look at the following Workgroup list and let me know if
you can participate in at least one of the these new Workgroups.

Calendaring and Minutes
Level Playing Field
Engineering
TV Whitespace
3650 MHz
2.5 GHz Whitespace
Pole Attachment
Network Management and Network Neutrality
Spectrum Etiquette
Congressional Liaison
FCC Liaison
Writing

The two Workgroups most in need of assistance are the "Calendaring and
Minutes" and the "Pole Attachment" Workgroups. If you can help with one
of these or if you want more details about the specific role of any
Workgroup then please send me an email or give me a call.

WISPA listservs have been created for each Workgroup and they will be
populated by the end of the day Monday, June 2nd. Each Workgroup will
work independently however the entire Committee will meet online twice
each month where we will coordinate, communicate and assist each another
to address the many issues that extend across Workgroup lines. The
initial online meetings will be via IRC (hosted by Mt. Vernon Net). In
the future, we anticipate migrating the twice-monthly online meeting
from IRC to a conference call, hosted by WISPA.

Regarding the much anticipated FCC trip, the WISPA Board and the FCC
Committee have been budgeting and planning for this trip for several
months. The recent on-list discussions about the TV Whitespace spectrum
have been very helpful in both addressing relevant technical issues and
in providing increased focus to help WISPA develop a clear, positive and
beneficial position to present to the FCC. A lot of additional
coordination, policy formation and presentation development work still
remains to be done. Next week I anticipate that this work will be handed
off to the new TV Whitespace Workgroup and then to the new FCC Liaison
Workgroup. For now, please continue to share your thoughts and ideas on
TV Whitespace and other important spectrum issues using the either the
FCC Committee listserv ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or the FCC Discussion
listserv ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or by emailing me directly. Let me know if you
are an FCC Committee member and you need to be subscribed to the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] listserv. Anyone can subscribe themselves to the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] listserv.

Again, my thanks to those of you who have stepped up to play an
important role in WISPA's industry lobbying effort. If you have not yet
stepped up, we still need you and we want you to play an active,
positive role. We have plenty of room for every WISPA member who wants
to learn, to work and to share in our success.

Respectfully,

Jack Unger
Chair - FCC Committee
