 Craig,

Obviously any donation will be appreciated. I believe some of the larger
WISPs will be willing to put in $500-$1000 towards this effort, knowing
 the
importance to their business. I spoke to Steve Coran a short while ago
 and
expressed concern over the quick pace this legislation is being pushed
through Congress and what would be done from his perspective over the next
three months. He will be getting me a plan of action shortly and also
stated that once it makes it through Congress, it will be sent to the FCC,
NTIA and USDA for Rule Making. At this time, our lobbying efforts will
 need
to be moved from Congress to these Departments to help construct the rules
and policy in which this money will be dispersed.

We appreciate your contribution and know that we don't want to unduly
 burden
your business with this contribution. We do however see the need for
everyone to put up a little so that the aggregate donations can be used to
protect our interests. If you would rather make a smaller donation
 monthly,
that can be done as well. Please state that when making your pledge.
 Every

With that said, I also encourage anyone who is not a member of WISPA yet

It should be noted, that Obama just got the House part through congress in
 less than a week.
The next three months is the most relevent. When we'll need the help most.
Remember funds must be available by Sept 2009. Only 7 months away.

WISP's will be capable of representing WISPA, if we run out of funds, and
the process extends pasts 3 months. We have plenty of tiem to plan for
 that.
The urgency in needing representation now, is that the process is moving
 so
fast. It will be hard for our committee to move as fast as the
 legislations,
without seasoned professional directing us and stream-lining us to our
 goal.

The committee is prepared to do it alone, if we need to. And we are also
prepared to seek alternate representation, if we do not raise the amount
 of
money needed to gain RiniCoran's representation. However, RiniCoran was
 our
first choice, because they clearly had put in their dues early with WISPA,
 and proven their competency.

What we want to learn from members, is how bad they want top level
representation for Broadband Stimulus, to optimize our chance at touching
 a
peice of that $8 billion. If members volunteer substantial additional
 funds,
it will be clear members support this effort, and WISPA as well will kick
 in
 additional funds from our cash-on-hand.

It should be noted there will be several stages of this lobby effort. We
started to late to effect the House. But we have a day or two left for the
Senate. And at some point, the senate and house versions, get worked
 in/out
 to a mutual agreeable one.

We are still urgently trying to make some effect to the legislative bill
stage. I think we also should focus on Senators, at this stage, since the
senate has not yet finished passing their version bill.

If we miss the boat, then we focus on phase2 (FCC, RUS, and NTIA.) on the
 emplimentation phase.

I think $500 for this type of representation would is reasonable.
Now I need 59 more people to agree

Question, what if three months go by and we have not gotten anywhere?
It's not hard to believe that 3 months could go by and it's realized

So, if this cycle is coming out on its own, what can we do to stand
behind those who voted that the stimulus is not a good idea and to
leave things alone. I'm having mixed feelings / personal gut checks on
this. Do I say, leave us alone, just let this all work out and we'll
figure a way out of it, while the next minute say, hmmm... how can I
get my hands on some of that stimulus money? Or, if I don't get it,
the telcos and cable companies will?

It brings to mind some of those of a greater generation who would not
even accept their social security payments, based on the principal of
the thing. When our great-grandkids look back at us, which decisions at
this time will make them proud of us, in awe? Probably won't be the
easy ones...

Perhaps this is a discussion to have on the wireless@wispa.org list?

We have recalled all laid off workers several weeks ago and are

Re: [WISPA] Ceragon, Dragonwave and whatelse?

2009-01-29 Thread Adam Greene
Just to resuscitate this thread ...

We have a 1.2Km urban link, really only need 100Mbps, need ~5 9's of
reliability.

We have deployed Mikrotik 5.3GHz and Radwin 5.3GHz and are getting
interference. We've also gotten interfered with on Alvarion VL 5.8.

We'd like to do 80GHz Bridgewave, but it's too expensive.

60GHz Bridgewave doesn't have enough reliability according to the link
budget calculations.

Without actually taking a spectrum analyzer to the location, what suggestion
would anyone have about the best frequency radio to deploy, to minimize
interference issues, get ~100Mbps throughput and not pay more than ~$13,000
(including advance replacement warranty)?

We're thinking Trango Apex or Dragonwave ...

Thanks,
Adam

They're happy with the price and we're happy with the profit at that

No reason to race to the bottom with yet another product when the market

Again, what are the options available today that can produce 1Gbps with

 I fully agree.

I'll add... the value of millimeterwave is 80Ghz, to actually have a
 license

for next to free. The FCC created that for provider's benefit, not for
manufacturers to charge us more and put the savings in their pockets. The
truth is that 80Ghz takes the same cost to make as 60Ghz. But for some
reason the manufacturers try to charge s premium, a lot more for the
 80Ghz.
I get pissed off everytime I think about it. It just holds the industry
 back

 for no good reason.

We aren't to the $8000 figure yet including licenses, but we are getting
really close with Trango Apex's. Its just a matter of time, before Trango
adds 24Ghz to their line. And Dragonwave is doing 24Ghz pretty darn close
 to

the goal. Thats my point on why 80Ghz vendors need to get it togeather
 and
rethink their business plans. Their high profit ride on the specialty
 short

range market, isn't going to last forever, when 24/23Ghz can do it for 1/3
the price. Most people would rather save money.

They are going to have to bring 80Ghz to the $8 range to keep making
 sales,
 before to long.

I'm not knocking the Bridgewve technology, its a great product. Sure for
that half mile link, it can really get the highest capacity to its buyer.
But how many of those $30k links will a WISP need? Maybe 1 or 2? I can
count 500 buildings off the top of my head that can justify use of a $10k
 radio.

A customer came to us looking for gigabit speeds between buildings and had
the money to pay for it. So, we quoted an 80GHz link w/2ft antennas with
over 2 hours of down time and a licensed Dragonwave link that would do
300Mbps w/5 minutes of downtime at half the price.
Once they saw both in the proposal, the response was, We really don't
 need
a full gigabit. 300Mbps should be fine.

We have both 60 and 80GHz Bridgewave links and Trango Giga and Apex
 links.
Bridgewave's are definitely the way to go for short hops where they are
cheaper than doing a licensed link. However, if Trango or Dragonwave
offered a 24GHz link that could do 100Mbps or more for $8k, we'd be all
 over
it and almost never think of Bridgewave. Obviously Bridgewave's SLE100
 can
do it at that price, but even in our urban environment, customers tend to
 be

First Question: This lobbying effort is to guide the policy and rules that
are written once the Broadband Stimulus Act is passed through Congress,
which the Obama Administration wants done by Feb. 16th. I don't know
anything about a bailout plan. Our lobbying efforts will try to insure that

small to medium size companies and we will also be seeking to identify WISPs
as credible Broadband providers in many underserved areas of the country.
All of our efforts will be to support the WISP industry as the various
Government departments work through

Second Question: We are working in partnership with WISP Directory and
Brian Webster's Wireless Mapping to get a better idea on the actual WISP
coverage across the United States. We need all WISPs to go to
www.wispdirectory.com and check their company information and add the zip
codes they cover. Once those records are updated, Matt Larsen sends the
info to Brian and he generates a estimated coverage map by drawing circles
around the center of each zip code reported. It is not perfect by any means
but it is aggregate data that we can use to prove the scope of our industry
to politicians.

Third Question: Would you be willing to write some survey questions and
send them to me? I'm not entirely sure what you are looking to accomplish
but survey's are excellent tools to do this type of study.

Thanks,

Here is what has been documented so far. If Matt doesn't have zip codes
 of
the coverage areas, there is a 10 mile circle drawn around the office
address I believe. That is why it is important that everyone registers
there zip codes. I would like to see that map turn YELLOW over the next
 few

 Jason,

First Question: This lobbying effort is to guide the policy and rules
 that
are written once the Broadband Stimulus Act is passed through Congress,
which the Obama Administration wants done by Feb. 16th. I don't know
anything about a bailout plan. Our lobbying efforts will try to insure
 that
at least a portion of the funding granted by this act will be reserved for
small to medium size companies and we will also be seeking to identify
 WISPs
as credible Broadband providers in many underserved areas of the country.

It is not perfect by any
 means
but it is aggregate data that we can use to prove the scope of our
 industry
 to politicians.

Third Question: Would you be willing to write some survey questions and
send them to me? I'm not entirely sure what you are looking to accomplish
but survey's are excellent tools to do this type of study.

 Thanks,

 Rick

Re: [WISPA] [WISPA Members] [Motorola II] Wireless Mapping Website

2009-01-29 Thread Patrick Shoemaker
Yes, we need some cleanup done in the DC/MD area. I sent a list of
companies that were in the WISP directory and either no longer active or
not WISPs to Matt last year. It looks like they might have never been
removed?

As far as I know there are no WISPs that cover the Anacostia

 aren't any there either?

If I am mistaken it would be great to know who they are. I could point

 Jason,

First Question: This lobbying effort is to guide the policy and rules
that are written once the Broadband Stimulus Act is passed through
Congress, which the Obama Administration wants done by Feb. 16^th . I
don't know anything about a bailout plan. Our lobbying efforts will
try to insure that at least a portion of the funding granted by this
act will be reserved for small to medium size companies and we will
also be seeking to identify WISPs as credible Broadband providers in
many underserved areas of the country. All of our efforts will be to
support the WISP industry as the various Government departments work
 through

Second Question: We are working in partnership with WISP Directory
and Brian Webster's Wireless Mapping to get a better idea on the
actual WISP coverage across the United States. We need all WISPs to
go to www.wispdirectory.com http://www.wispdirectory.com and check
their company information and add the zip codes they cover. Once
those records are updated, Matt Larsen sends the info to Brian and he
generates a estimated coverage map by drawing circles around the
center of each zip code reported. It is not perfect by any means but
it is aggregate data that we can use to prove the scope of our
 industry to politicians.

Third Question: Would you be willing to write some survey questions
and send them to me? I'm not entirely sure what you are looking to
accomplish but survey's are excellent tools to do this type of study.

 Thanks,

 Rick

As part of the lobbying effort what sort of metrics will you
use to prove that a bailout is needed? I've done a bit of research

Is there some way to make this easier? We cover a ton of zip codes

Jason, First Question: This lobbying effort is to guide the policy and
rules thatare written once the Broadband Stimulus Act is passed through
Congress, which the Obama Administration wants done by Feb. 16th. I don't
knowanything about a bailout plan. Our lobbying efforts will try to insure
thatat least a portion of the funding granted by this act will be reserved
forsmall to medium size companies and we will also be seeking to identify
WISPsas credible Broadband providers in many underserved areas of the
country. All of our efforts will be to support the WISP industry as the
variousGovernment departments work through Second Question: We are
working in partnership with WISP Directory andBrian Webster's Wireless
Mapping to get a better idea on the actual WISPcoverage across the United
States. We need all WISPs to go towww.wispdirectory.com and check their
company information and add the zipcodes they cover. Once those records are
updated, Matt Larsen sends theinfo to Brian and he generates a estimated
coverage map by drawing circlesaround the center of each zip code reported.
It is not perfect by any meansbut it is aggregate data that we can use to
prove the scope of our industryto politicians. Third Question: Would you
be willing to write some survey questions andsend them to me? I'm not
entirely sure what you are looking to accomplishbut survey's are excellent
tools to do this type of study. Thanks, Rick From:

Just a note. The USDA/RUS will not currently loan/grant in areas where they
have existing loans/grants in competing services. They spell this out on their
website, but I know one guy that mentioned he got around it someway. IMO, this
rule needs changing. Some of those getting funding are taking their own sweet
time in deploying anything if at all.

This is something your lawyers need to keep in mind when working this through
with the Washington guys. If its not changed or addressed in the Stimulus
package, those of you like me that compete with rural telco cooperatives, will
be SOL. Also, if you compete with another company that has received Broadband
Grants/Loans from the RUS, you may be in the same boat.

The following WISPA members have stepped up to the plate with donations for
our Broadband Stimulus Lobbying Effort. The WISPA Board would like to thank
all those who have donated so far and encourage others to do the same. I
can't stress enough the importance of this cause as this package races
through Congress and the lobbying efforts that will still need to be done as
rule making and dispursement procedures are defined at the NTIA, USDA and
the FCC once the Legislation is passed.

Is there some way to make this easier? We cover a ton of zip codes (towns
as small as 50 people). It would be easier to just draw on a map... or even
if we could provide GPS coordinates (like the four corners of a square)?

[WISPA] Updated National WISP Map

The national WISP mapping initiative has been updated. This version contains
data provided by Matt Larsen off the WISP Directory site as of 1/21/09. I
also added some actual WISP network footprints from my clients who gave
permission. To date the land area covered equals 539,133 square miles.

You can view the map here: http://www.wirelessmapping.com/Google%20Maps3.htm

Next step is to compile demographic data. That's going to take some
work...state by state.

Tell ya what Mark. I'll bet you $10,000 the collapse won't happen. No,
let's make it $100,000. Now, I'm serious! I'll even give you 2:1 odds.
I'll give you $200,000 if it collapses. Deal?

(Of course, ha gotta love these tales I win, heads you lose kind of
bets ;-).

You want to lobby AGAINST there being any pork bills, I'll donate if

If you're going to lobby for them, I can only surmise than none of
