RE: [WISPA] Multiple Radios on Single antenna

2006-01-18 Thread Paul Hendry
Bob, I hear what you're saying and have been through the figures a few times
and even tried turning the power of the radio cards down to 1dB output
(still unable to run both links simultaneously) but this doesn't explain why
others are able to use the same radio cards with similar antennas with
little to no problems.

Charles, unfortunately Canopy isn't a financially viable solution at
present. I have a rough idea of these 2 terms but I'll research them a
little deeper to see if they shed some light. Anything else that may help on
my quest?

Ah..Lets do some math...

Lets say the radio has a +20 dB output. For this example there is no
line loss. The antenna is rated at 30dB x-pole isolation. Here we go...

+20 dB
-30dB xpole
=
-10 dB receive level.

In my book that is high enough to kill any link of the same freq on the
opposite polarityNo???

Add to that a radio that needs to Rx and Tx on and off and you should
have receiver blocking...

A tightly notched cavity filter (but then, you lose system flexibility in
other ways)

Jeez, why am I still awake (and why am I responding to listserv emails at

Paul,

You may have a bad feed horn or you may have a bad radio. I would
consider both before jumping off a bridge here..

Tell Radiowaves about your issue and see if you can send the feedhorns
back for testing. They come right out and may be a quick test to see
whats up.

It's 2016 and now WISPs have taken over (killed off SBC / Comcast) --

That's an easy one.

I divide my company into 25 divisions. When it comes time to do a
provision for them I miss the first 7 appointments. On the 8th
appointment we show up but tell them we don't have the right equipment
and need to come back. Then in 6 weeks when we come back we do the
install only to find out that someone didn't do any provisioning on
the back end. We tell them we need to tell the networking dept to look
at it. Networking refers it to a field tech who tells customer service
to schedule an appoint but that doesn't happen because there is a
language barrier between my field service agent and my outsourced
customer service vendor on the other side of the world. They call back
and we regenerate the request. Then we just put that request in a pile
with the other When we get around to it requests. When they call back
again we play dumb and tell them we need to send someone out to their
customer's location to check it out. Obviously we miss that
appointment and as many more as we can before someone gets totally
pissed and complains to the authorities or they stop calling. If they
complain we finally do the install within the final alloted time by the
regulatory agency and turn the customer on.

Of course once they are on they will experience network induced
outages as well as intermittant e-mail services (that's what happens
when you turn port blocking on and off). On days where the e-mail port
is turned on, we will throttle the bandwidth back to 40k .

And when there are outages, we will take 6-10 days to fix them!

Just like Verizon and the others! I'd LOVE to be just like them!

Anything else that may help on
my quest?

RE: [WISPA] Multiple Radios on Single antenna

2006-01-18 Thread Paul Hendry
Not so sure it's that simple. I have 2 separate setups that I'm seeing this
problem with so I doubt it's 4 feed horns or radios gone bad at the same
time. We're in the UK and unfortunately the RadioWaves support isn't quite
as good here as it obviously is over there but I'll give em a go.

Paul,

You may have a bad feed horn or you may have a bad radio. I would
consider both before jumping off a bridge here..

Tell Radiowaves about your issue and see if you can send the feedhorns
back for testing. They come right out and may be a quick test to see
whats up.

[WISPA] Fw: [TVWHITESPACE] NEI petition Docket 05-345

2006-01-18 Thread Marlon K. Schafer (509) 982-2181

Hi All,

I suggest that WISPA support this proposal. Naturally only those who are
members will count when it comes time to decide to support this or not, but
I think ideas and comments from everyone would be welcome and a good idea.

In a nut shell, you all know we've already been working hard to get the TV
white spaces (unused spectrum between TV channels) opened up as unlicensed.
The Nuclear power industry has already been using those bands in some places
for in plant communications devices. Now they want to lock everyone else
out for the next 5 years. This proposal calls that a bad idea.

Do some shopping and you can buy SM's for about $250 or less... start at
ebay, The new SM lite has a MRSP of $200 on 25 packs, usually you can
get a
17 - 20 % discount from most Distributors.

now the SM lite is out around $175. It’s a tough call not to use

Bob, I hear what you're saying and have been through the figures a few
times
and even tried turning the power of the radio cards down to 1dB output
(still unable to run both links simultaneously) but this doesn't explain
why
others are able to use the same radio cards with similar antennas with
little to no problems.

Charles, unfortunately Canopy isn't a financially viable solution at
present. I have a rough idea of these 2 terms but I'll research them a
little deeper to see if they shed some light. Anything else that may
help on
my quest?

Ah..Lets do some math...

Lets say the radio has a +20 dB output. For this example there is no
line loss. The antenna is rated at 30dB x-pole isolation. Here we
go...

+20 dB
-30dB xpole
=
-10 dB receive level.

In my book that is high enough to kill any link of the same freq on the
opposite polarityNo???

Add to that a radio that needs to Rx and Tx on and off and you should
have receiver blocking...

Dual pol antennas work fine when only receiving (as in those large

adjacent channels). I think you will always have trouble overloading

the receiver when transmitting with this setup.

Thoughts on this?
I sure think I could hook up subs all day long for the price of these 900 CPEs.

512 is plenty for us folks out in the sticks. Sure is better than the
14-20k dialup most people get.

Re: [WISPA] TRANGO!!

2006-01-18 Thread Brian Rohrbacher

Trango Introduces New $149 WISP Subscriber Unit
Lowest priced fixed wireless modem available
SAN DIEGO, CA January 18, 2006 - Trango Broadband Wireless,
the leader in fixed broadband wireless equipment, introduced a major
addition to its product line which will enable Wireless Internet
Service Providers (WISPs) to, for the first time, compete head-to-head
against cable and DSL providers with the high performance Atlas Fox
M5580M-FSU wireless modem, priced at just $149 and capable of internet
transmission speeds from 10 to 30 Mbps.
We truly believe that the introduction of the Atlas Fox
wireless modem is the sea change event that will transform the wireless
internet service market into a consumer mass-market service capable of
out-competing cable and DSL delivery methods, said Zdravko Divjak, CEO
and President of Trango Broadband Wireless. This product is
eliminating the final obstacle toward nationwide deployments of fixed
broadband wireless networks capable of serving millions of users coast
to coast.
Theres nothing lite about the Atlas Fox
M5580M-FSU, said Todd Easterling, Vice President of Worldwide
Marketing for Trango Broadband Wireless. This product offers the
industrys highest performance and at a dramatic price breakthrough.
Our engineers have outdone themselves on this one, and many of the
wireless internet service providers who have Beta-tested the Atlas
Fox are raving about the price to performance ratio. To provide real
10 Mbps to their subscribers, at only $149 for the CPE (consumer
premise equipment), enables WISPs to offer high-speed internet access
to an entirely new market. More than ever, the return on investment and
break-even points for WISPs deploying Trango are measurably superior to
our competitors, added Mr. Easterling. Over the past few months we
have clearly seen the cost and design benefits associated with
controlling the entire product development and sales processfrom
engineering specification, to radios rolling off the production line of
our own state-of-the-art factory in San Diego, to the direct sales
model for the U.S. market. And most importantly, were passing on many
of these benefits to our customers.
Trangos Atlas Fox M5580M-FSU wireless modem, which can
reach internet subscribers over twelve miles away from an Access Point
(AP), currently provides upload and download speeds up to 10Mbps, and
is upgradeable to speeds over 30Mbps. This provides a platform for next
generation internet services known as the triple play (voice, video
and data). In contrast, cable and telephone/DSL companies generally
offer service between 1 Mbps and 6 Mbps bandwidth for downloads, and
between 128 Kbps and 768 Kbps for uploads. Trango is taking orders for
the Atlas Fox now. Shipments begin February 7 th, 2006.

Re: [WISPA] TRANGO!!

2006-01-18 Thread Matt Liotta
I would also like to see more details. If it is anything like a
multi-point version of their existing Atlas then it could be an
interesting product. Having a connectorized 5.8Ghz multi-point AP at the
Trango price point is certainly needed in the market. I only hope they
drop the shitty RP-SMA connector in favor of something more robust like N.

Polarities only get used individually, one or the other, software selectable
on the fly.

Trango radios are all Half Duplex on the RF. Ethernet ports (wired) are
Full Duplex.

(Note: Full duplex Ethernet Wired port does make a big difference in
performance when getting flooded with small packets.)

The beauty is one CPE radio that will talk to both
the 5830AP and OFDM Atlas PTMP AP.

Atlas AP, wont be till next quarter, from what I
understand.

The new 900SU, also inexpensive, is shipping Beta
this week, so its just around the corner.

Mac,

Did I miss something? Todd has been at Trango for less than a year. Z
is the top man. Z is who made this happen, starting 5 years ago with a

There are other connectors more robust than RP-SMA; it doesn't have to
be N. RP-SMA is just too small to use with decent coax.

He'sright, I should keep my mouth shut until Trango releases info first on
their time table. Sorry, Trango. Itsjust hard tokeep quiet about good news.

Re: [WISPA] TRANGO!!

2006-01-18 Thread Tom DeReggi
The Reflector is one negative trait regarding Trango. When the Internal
short range, and external long range foxes were two different unit, it was
disappointing that the Fox only had a reflector option compared to the
5830ext. However, my opinion on that has all changed now that its just one
radio for short or long range, just a factor of sliding it into the
reflector. There is a big cash flow advantage to having to jsut stock one
radio instead of two. You pre-configure the radio, go onsite, try internal
version first, if can't pull off the link, you add the reflector dish, no
reconfiguarion needed, and off you go. This is a BIG time saver, compared
to having to go onsite with two radios every install. Sure we can do site
paths (distance) up front, but you can't predict noise floors.

does anyone know if these support an external antenna?

That reflector is super-ugly, and without it, they don't go far enough for

[WISPA] TRANGO- changes history

2006-01-18 Thread Tom DeReggi

I'm not sure if everyone really truly realizes what has just happened.
It took an hour or two for it to really sink in, I think I must have been in
shock.

Last year when Betas were send out, they asked, how many we wanted to buy,
before they shipped.

This year, they just sent them, and I wasn't told the price.
Was it sorta like a restaurant with no prices on the menu?
Send us the gear to see how nice it is, and then tell us the big price tag
after we realized the advantages?
Think about it, Like a Fox, but will be able to do up to 30 mbps, cross
platform supported!
They jsut released a Fox-D2 for the low price point model. The M5580 was
likely going to have a bigger price tag, if I guessed.
What was it going to be, $300, $400, $500? When I heard $150 today, I able
shxt myself. I was blown away. I never expected it.

I remember three years ago, when everyone was talking about the 2 year ROI
on equipment, wishing that if they only had a $500 CPE! And one came, thanks
Trango. And then some people started getting greety and pushing the limits,
and said If we only had a $300 CPE. And sure enough it came. Thanks
Trango. (Also a few others like Tranzeo releasing 2.4Ghz for under $150).
Some jerks actually had the nerve to then say, if I only had a $150 CPE!.
It just plain got rediculously funny at that point. Then Like Emeral would
say BAM! Trango did it agin, $150. This is truly a defining moment
in history. No NOT for a commodity WIFI product, not for a 2.4Ghz product.
But for a Commercial Robust WISP product! Equivellent to what we easilly
paid $500 for, less than a year ago.

I was lucky to share an experience this past October at a Trango meeting.
After the reception, some of us stuck around to hang out. We were all
dreaming about what we needed, to be more successful and sell more radios.
Then out of nowhere Z gets all serious and asks What If...we had a $200
CPE? We respond, how much quantity would that take? 5000, 10,000?
Instantly, Travis is like, at that price I'd commit to 5000, 1000 at a
time. Then I was like, I'd take 500. Etc, etc. Then we all realized we
were dreaming and drinking way to much wine, and called it a night. CPEs
were still $400 at that time, ya know. God what a poker face! I thought Z
was kidding! And the irony in it all, quantity 10,000 is not required! Just
qty 30! And its only $150, not $200! I just don't know what to say.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm not going to be in the tech room
tommorrow. I'm going to be in the marketing room, making new materials, and
crunching numbers. Our business plan may have just changed overnight, with
this recent Press release. Think about the potential! The residential
market is going to be broken wide open, with this pricing. If I didn't have
a box of M5580s sitting on my desk, I'd ask somebody to pinch me, to make
sure I wasn't dreaming.

Trango... Thanks!

PS. PLEASE, NOBODY SAY, If I only had a CPE for $75, I don't think my
heart could take the results.

Re: [WISPA] TRANGO- changes history

2006-01-18 Thread Travis Johnson

Tom,

I agree with you 100%. However, there is still much to do the 5.8ghz
product was only the first step... we are currently deploying 60-70 of
the 2.4ghz product per month... mainly because of the totally amazing
distance (15-20 miles is a no brainer... 25-30 miles is possible with a
grid antenna attached). We love the 2.4ghz product. Now we just need it
cheaper... not $149... even $250ish would be great. :)

Then there is the 900mhz product the lifesaver if there ever was
one... we now have over 400 customers deployed on 900mhz... customers
that we would not have gotten without a 900mhz product on the market.
Same with this product line... we need a $250ish CPE... :)

And, not to ruin the party on this thread, but you realize the downside
is now every little mom and pop shop can now afford Trango? How many of
your competitors will now switch and start installing Trango. :(

Yeah, I wondered why. Now I know.

No way could they support a distributor model at these prices...

Damn...If I didn't know any better there were several people bitching
about Trango cutting out their distributors and going direct. I think I
remember people saying That's it...I'll never buy from them again.

Now they have $149 CPE. Hm.Should be interesting to see
 what happens now

Re: [WISPA] TRANGO- changes history

2006-01-18 Thread Travis Johnson

We have been installing Linksys / Dlink / Belkin routers at every
install for almost 4 years. Customers get an "internal" wireless, we
help protect them by having a firewall, and we then have a device we
can monitor (with ping) to check their connection.

It's great to see a decent product hit the $150 level.

It's not going to "lure" me away from my staros yet. It may, however, end
up being deployed if the AP turns out to be affordable for those smaller
cells. If I can put up a 2-4 mile across cell (using omni, not sector) and
sell 5Mbit connections to 10 to 20 people per cell... It might be less
costly than my star-os system. I am not yet prepared to give up on routing
at the cpe end for normal installs.

I'm not sure if everyone really truly realizes what has just happened.
It took an hour or two for it to really sink in, I think I must have been

  in

When I heard $150 today, I

  able

shxt myself. I was blown away. I never expected it.

I remember three years ago, when everyone was talking about the 2 year ROI
on equipment, wishing that if they only had a $500 CPE! And one came,

  thanks

Trango. And then some people started getting greety and pushing the

  limits,

and said "If we only had a $300 CPE". And sure enough it came. Thanks
Trango. (Also a few others like Tranzeo releasing 2.4Ghz for under $150).
Some jerks actually had the nerve to then say, "if I only had a $150

  CPE!".

It just plain got rediculously funny at that point. Then Like Emeral would
say "BAM!" Trango did it agin, "$150". This is truly a defining

  moment

in history. No NOT for a commodity WIFI product, not for a 2.4Ghz

  product.

Then out of nowhere "Z" gets all serious and asks "What If...we had a $200
CPE?" We respond, "how much quantity would that take? 5000, 10,000?"
Instantly, Travis is like, "at that price I'd commit to 5000, 1000 at a
time." Then I was like, "I'd take 500".

I don't know about you guys, but I'm not going to be in the tech room
tommorrow. I'm going to be in the marketing room, making new materials,

  and

crunching numbers. Our business plan may have just changed overnight,

  with

this recent Press release. Think about the potential! The residential
market is going to be broken wide open, with this pricing. If I didn't

  have

a box of M5580s sitting on my desk, I'd ask somebody to pinch me, to make
sure I wasn't dreaming.

Trango... Thanks!

PS. PLEASE, NOBODY SAY, " If I only had a CPE for $75", I don't think my
heart could take the results.

RE: [WISPA] TRANGO- changes history

2006-01-18 Thread Chadd Thompson
I am probably far more cynical than most but I really hope that Trango has
made a turn around as a company with the latest round of changes.

I tend to remember the bad things more than the good.

WARNING this is a list of the BAD things!! Good things are at the bottom...

I remember purchasing link 10's as soon as they were released and spending
time on the phone with at the time their rude tech support department trying
to figure out why they were locking up randomly requiring a power cycle to
get them back online. Only to find out from them that I was the only one in
the world having this problem and it must be because I don't know how to
install them. Low and behold a month or so later they release a firmware fix
for the 30 or so Day lock up issue that didn't exist.

I remember fighting with the 58xx form factor units filling up with water
and destroying the ethernet ports on them. Again I spent a lot of time with
the same rude tech support department trying to explain to them that it was
a pressure/temp difference causing water to be pulled into the units. Again
only to be accused of not knowing what I was doing and that I had to be
installing the units upside down. What do you know after fighting with them
about RMA repairs and such on the units they issue a statement about a month
later to not tighten the strain relief all the way on the radio so they
could breath and not pool water on the inside. I spent a Thanksgiving on a
tower because of this.

I remember buying and deploying a 900AP and having pissed off potential
customers because I couldn't get any SU's to do their installs. Also getting
to my 15th SU and trying to figure out why the web interface was hosed and I
couldn't add any more subs to it. Again another firmware fix.

I remember power supplies not having enough output to run the heaters on
longer cable runs and having to buy new wall worts for some units.

I remember fighting and scrounging trying to find a switch that would
properly work with the ethernet ports on the units.

I remember condensation building up on the inside of the random on 5.x units
causing 30+ db of fade taking out links left and right. This is still an
issue on units I have not replaces with external antennas

I remember prices being jacked around.
The various changes in distribution models and not knowing who I was going
to get units from and how much was I going to have to pay for them.

You know what even after all of this I still buy and deploy some Trango
equipment, but it burns me every time I buy more stuff from them. These
problems would have been much more tolerable if they would have been decent
to work with and not so arrogant about insisting they werent having
problems.

THE GOOD stuff!!!

I also remember setting up my first long BH 14 miles with a Link-10 and
seeing 8ms latency and advertised throughput on the link.

Hooking up a few dozen customers on T900 that I could never touch in the
past with 2.4 or 5.x. I also get better throughput, distance and latency
than with my Alvarion 900 customers, alvarion is a master and noise
avoidance though when compared to T900.

My link-10's just hum right along since the bugs were fixed. Besides the
condensation issue on the INT units.

I do think they are getting a bit better with regards to customer relations
though and their tech support department was very personable and willing to
help out last time I had to call them. So I hope this is a sign of things to
come from them.

I have been beating my head on the wall trying to figure out what equipment
I want to use for a few new POP's this year and admit it would be nice if
Trango pulled it together with a good line up of cost effective, feature
rich and most of all bug free equipment early this year to add to my list of
choices.

Sorry for the rambling
Chadd.

Re: [WISPA] TRANGO- changes history

2006-01-18 Thread Mark Koskenmaki
Before I came to the WISP world, I had 13 years as a technician that had
customer contact and often did technical support over the phone.

I often was the guy across the counter when the customer was happy...and
when he was not.

I never cease to be amazed at stories of businesses with people on the phone
who have bad attitudes, who blame the customer, etc, etc. I've learned the
customer is always right, at least in his own mind. And you can tell him
he's wrong, but you have to use some tact and courtesy when you do. And you
absolutely MUST be right, if you do. After I left, a crisis in the
business I worked for caused management to break some of those rules, and
that caused a serious downward trend.

I've found you can charge the guy twice as much as he thought he should pay,
if you things right and fix the problem right, and you can make an honest
explanation. I've also discovered that goes hand in hand with surprising
him with NO bill when it's your fault and he thinks its his. I know, I'm a
bit old fashioned, in that I think that relationships make or break you in
the business world. Lots of people will say that people are fickle and
will jump to save 10 bucks.

Maybe WISP's share these traits. Some will jump to save 10 bucks. Others
are loyal to a fault.

If anyone, ANYWHERE who represents a vendor is on these lists and reads
this... and your company culture represents the faults described below... I
can't imagine how you expect to stay in business.

I've used and still in the market to use Equinox antennas, even though some
had terrible faults. Why? Because they have honestly tried to resolve
issues with me. They've gone above and beyond to fix things. Do I see
comments from Pacwireless about improving thier 29 db 5 ghz grids? Nope.

But Equinox has kept me informed and in the loop.

Honestly, that's a lot to say about a company.Nobody makes perfect
stuff... But if they do thier honest best to make things right, it goes a
long ways toward keeping customers happy.

you list are all 802.11a/b/g the last 3 are all proprietary. There are
people on this list for every different system you just described, not
sure how many people have used them all. I have used StarOS, Mikrotik,
