Is there anybody on this list operating a 6 gig link?
I'm wondering how the licensing works?
Can multiple operators run 6 gig in the same area?

6GHz is licensed from the FCC on a link by link basis. Keep in mind the FCC
typically requires a 6' or larger antenna on each side of the link for 6GHz.

Try contacting www.comsearch.com or someone similar to learn more about the
process.

Best,

Brad

There are a number of sites out there, including

http://towers.conxx.net/

http://www.towermaps.com/

http://www.towersource.com/

The problem with the first one is that it is simply a dump of
the FCC data, and does not list any towers that are not
registered with the FCC.

The problem with the others is that while they list many
towers that are not registered with the FCC, they charge
for use.

There is no source that lists ALL the towers out there.

[WISPA] Rural Telcos Raise A 'Ruckus' For IPTV Gear

2006-07-19 Thread Peter R.

Rural Telcos Raise A 'Ruckus' For IPTV /search/?query=IPTV Gear
Telecomweb: http://www.telecomweb.com/tnd/18142.html

In what observers are calling a stunning win, Wi-Fi startup *Ruckus
Wireless* this morning disclosed it has signed contracts with 16 mostly
rural U.S. telcos that are going to use its Wi-Fi equipment to
distribute their triple-play offerings around home.

Ruckus had previously announced only a handful of wins at U.S. telcos -
six in all - and an agreement by a major French retailer to put its
hardware on the shelf for French IPTV /search/?query=IPTV users to
buy. The young company, founded in June 2004, needed something like the
momentum the 16 wins now gives it to make its technology pitch to the
larger Tier One and Tier Two carriers worldwide, including cable and
satellite providers.

What Ruckus is selling is an implementation of Wi-Fi that's said to be
far more usable for distribution of IPTV and indeed any type of
broadband than standard Wi-Fi devices. The company says that it is so
reliable it eliminates the need for coax, Cat 5 or any other type of
wired distribution system in a house. The technology, which Ruckus calls
smart Wi-Fi, uses a directional antenna array and advanced traffic
engineering mechanisms to extend the Wi-Fi range and coverage by
dynamically steering packets around interference and automatically
prioritizing traffic. The system, as Ruckus describes it, selects the
best path through the air at any given time for a specific type of
multimedia content. It directs Wi-Fi signals over that path to a given
receiver instead of broadcasting it in all directions. If the chosen
path experiences interference, the Ruckus system automatically steers
the traffic over another path in real time to maintain between 15 Mb/s
and 20 Mb/s of consistent bandwidth to every location in the home with
virtually no interruption in Wi-Fi transmissions, Ruckus says.

Ruckus claims an average user can install its gear for multiple home
televisions in less than an hour, with no need for help - thus
eliminating the dreaded and expensive truck roll that accompanies most
new cable-TV and many IPTV installations.

Until now, Wi-Fi hasn't been up to the task. Consumers want to use
Wi-Fi for all their multimedia, if they can get it, and now they can,
Ruckus said in a prepared quote that it attributed to Steve Bartlett,
general manager of *Daviess-Martin Telephone* in Montgomery, Ind.

The big reason Ruckus can't simply sell off-the-shelf at retailers is
that cablecos, satellite companies and even telcos aren't using set-top
boxes that are compatible with Wi- Fi. They've got to provide such boxes
- and few do. Thus, partnership with the operators is key to Ruckus'
long-term success, and nailing down 16 in one pop is its best sales
pitch to date.

The new Ruckus customers include: *ETEX Telephone Cooperative* (Texas);
*Daviess-Martin Rural Telephone Corporation* (Ind.); *LaValle Telephone*
(Wisc.); *Richland Grant Telephone Cooperative* (Ind.); *Canby Telcom*
(Ore.); *Hutchinson Telephone Company* (Minn.); *Glandorf Telephone
Company* (Ohio); *Green Hills Telephone Company* (Mo.); *Ligonier
Telephone Company* (Ind.); *Matanuska Telephone Association* (Alaska);
*Union Telephone Company* (Wisc.); *Viola Home Telephone Company*
(Ill.); *McDonough Telephone Cooperative* (Ill.); *New Windsor
Telephone* (Ill.); *Nex-Tech, Inc*. (Kansas); and *Wabash Mutual
Telephone* (Ohio).

[WISPA] Tranzeo WDS capacity, Mikrotik - problems

2006-07-19 Thread Jason Hensley

I've got a two AP WDS setup with Tranzeo TR-6000's with PacWireless 13db
omni's on each. They are less than a mile apart. Any idea how many CPE's
can run on each AP before it starts causing issues? We're going to be
replacing the WDS setup with an actual backhaul soon, but just haven't
gotten it done yet.

I'm having trouble with performance. Works fine for awhile and then it
seems to bog down, and then back to normal again. I've got about 10
clients

(all Tranzeo gear) on each of the AP's. I wouldn't think that this would
cause issues but I may be wrong. Signal between the WDS connections is
around the -65 mark so that's no problem. I've got a couple of marginal
clients (running -90 or so) so I'm wondering if these could possibly be
causing it. Everything is horizontal pol.

When the service completely drops out I can get to the AP's just fine from
the client end, but can't get to the router (RB532). I've switched out
cabling, switches, etc with no luck. Have a new 532 on the way so I'm going
to switch it out as well and see what happens, but anyone have any other
thoughts?

Also, anyone have experience with an X10 camera shutting down their
network?

Thanks!

No personal experience on the X10, but from what I here, it will give
you nightmares.

Seems like I heard Marlon speak such wonderful things about the x10
before, eh Marlon?

-90 signal is never a good thing. We won't do an install unless it's
-75 or better. Sometimes even a -75 isn't strong enough to combat all
the interference we have in town.

Someone is missing a GOLDEN opportunity here. If someone setup a site that
charged a *small* fee to be listed, and then maybe a smaller fee (per use) to
search, they could possibly make some money. I don't think it is worth $250 per
year to do tower searches. I would probably be willing to pay $20 for a months
worth of searches though.

Re: [WISPA] Tranzeo WDS capacity, Mikrotik - problems

2006-07-19 Thread KyWiFi LLC
-90 is not just bad, it's horrible. ;-)

It has been my experience that a signal of -75 or better
*should* allow for a reliable 11Mbps connection rate. I have
seen times when the subscriber had a -65 to -60 and they
would only associate at a rate of 1Mbps but after changing
channels, their association rate was able to negotiate at the
optimal rate of 11Mbps. We also have a subscriber with a
-89 and they have been able to sustain a constant 11Mbps
rate which blows my mind. They are one of our happiest
subscribers and since we have not noticed a degradation in
service/speed from the AP to which they are associated, we
have left them connected. I will be testing a 400mw 2.4GHz
CPE at their location in the near future. Right now, they have
a 18dBi CPE with a 24dBi grid and they are connected to
a 13.5dBi H-POL sector and 18dBi radio which is 7 miles
away. They use to have a -75 I think it was but the trees
around the halfway mark between the sector and them have
since then grown into their link's fresnel zone.

We service rural Central and Eastern Kentucky and I would
say our noise floor is around -95 to -90 in most areas. We
always use the largest antenna approved by the subscriber.
If we can get a -75 link with a 13dBi panel, we normally go
with a 19dBi panel so we can get the signal into -60's. Just
try to keep your signal level in the -75 to -55 range and you
*should* do well with 2.4GHz. I can't wait until the day when
we can deploy 5GHz CPE for the same price as our 2.4GHz
CPE. But, as time goes on, I'm sure 5GHz spectrum will
someday be used the same (if not more) than 2.4GHz and we
will all be looking for the next best piece of spectrum to utilize
for our PtMP links.

Interference really isn't much of an issue here. There's one other WISP and
we work pretty closely together to stay out of each other's way. We've
analyzed the area and nothing else is out there but us and the typical home
APs.

So -90 is that bad huh? Guess I may need to rethink those two installs.

I've got a two AP WDS setup with Tranzeo TR-6000's with PacWireless 13db
omni's on each. They are less than a mile apart. Any idea how many
CPE's
can run on each AP before it starts causing issues? We're going to be
replacing the WDS setup with an actual backhaul soon, but just haven't
 gotten it done yet.

I'm having trouble with performance. Works fine for awhile and then it
seems to bog down, and then back to normal again. I've got about 10
clients
(all Tranzeo gear) on each of the AP's. I wouldn't think that this
would
cause issues but I may be wrong. Signal between the WDS connections is
around the -65 mark so that's no problem. I've got a couple of
marginal
clients (running -90 or so) so I'm wondering if these could possibly be
causing it. Everything is horizontal pol.

When the service completely drops out I can get to the AP's just fine
from
the client end, but can't get to the router (RB532). I've switched out
cabling, switches, etc with no luck. Have a new 532 on the way so I'm
going
to switch it out as well and see what happens, but anyone have any other

thoughts?

Also, anyone have experience with an X10 camera shutting down their
network?

 Thanks!

RE: [WISPA] Google Wi-Fi map

BreezeACCESS VL is the PMP backhaul for the Tropos mesh nodes. My house in
located on that map, but my laptop can't see a Tropos node. Then again, I
cannot physically see one from house or near my house either. They are
everywhere else though.
