But in the same sense, its not as cut and dry as oversubscription. If
it
 were, then a 5Mbps/5Mbps ratio could give me 103 calls/Mbit (IAX2/G729)
 but
in reality, that's 100k PPS per 100 calls, making it unworkable. But
at
 the
same token, if I decide 15 concurrent calls @ G711 per AP is a usable
 number
with bandwidth left over, I can manage oversubscription there.

Ultimately, it's the PPS that kills it. But can systems like Mikrotik
 for
QOS adequately pack the packets over the wireless so that instead of
 transmitting 100 300byte packets, to transmit 20 1500byte packets?

 Subject: Re: [WISPA] Trango VOIP

I have plenty of VOIP customers behind my Trango network.
I'm also getting excellent results using Targeted Technologies
 proprietary
8K stream VOIP even over my 900Mhz Trango.
Trango has plenty of processing power and pps performance to do VOIP.

The relevent question is, is the oversubscription rate you plan to use
on
your network within the capabilty of delivering VOIP?
There are many challenges in delivering quality VOIP over ANY PtMP
 network
 design.

Although prioirtization helps, its not the one save all feature. In
PtMP
 end

users must compete for upload time of the AP, even smart polling
systems
 do
not 100% solve this issue in an oversubscribed network, although helps
significantly. Backend prioiritization is not enough for upload
 direction,
if it gets choked at the AP before it reaches the prioritization. If
you
are going to do VOIP, you must be more conservative on your
 oversubscription

rate, and you will be fine. On the download side it is not a problem
as
traffic will reach the bandwdith management/prioiritization before it
 reaches the AP.

With that said, Trango had been working on a VOIP prioritized firmware
 last
year for the 5580, I do not know if it was released or not.
The second issue is whether you are designing your Trango network with
enough RF margin. Never never use a bare 5580 radio, its
pointless. The
Behive antennas are now shipping for the Trango 5580 also!! They work
 great,

and bring the signal up to between 15-18 db antenna gain, depending on
 the
 case. They are great.

Lastly, the newest Trango Firmwares added some support to help with out
 of
order packets with its ARQ algorithym. This seemed to help quite a bit
 to
optimize the VOIP performance when using ARQ. We only run Trango with
 ARQ.
To valuable to turn off. (With the exception of for 5830s).

The other decission you'll need to make is whetehr the over all design
of
your network is good enough to be a VOIP provider. You will have to be
 the
judge of that. Voice services are demanding, from an uptime SLA point
of
view. To handle this, we are adding more point to point links, more
licensed links, getting rid of backbone bottle necks, etc.

But Trango can handle VOIP just fine, as far as capabilty of a radio.
 The
VOIP engineering is up to you, on the router behind and in front of
them.

2007-07-05 Thread Marlon K. Schafer

Regulatory AlertHi All,

I thought that the DFS requirement on 5.3 gig gear was only for new
equipment certification. Turns out that even existing product lines when
sold as new have to be modified. Example: You have a 3 year old Trango or
Motorola 5.3 gig system and you want to add a new customer. The new radio
will have to have DFS capabilites or they can't make/sell it to you, even
though it's the same hardware as the device certified 3 years ago.

This comes from an html exchange with Rashmi Doshi. He's with the FCC and
in charge of such things rules etc. I've put rd: in front of his comments.

rd: Some answers to your questions:

Just to make sure I'm perfectly clear on this. A product, that was
certified under the old rules, can no longer be sold under those rules in
the USA?

rd: It is correct that if the product was certified under the old rules, it
cannot be sold unless it was upgraded to include the DFS and TPC
requirements.

Any new gear, not just new certifications, has to meet the new rules as of
July 20th of this year. No grandfather clause is in place for product lines
we're already using?? I know we can still use them, but we have to also
be able to buy new radios and replace bad units.

rd: Yes all the new gear has to meet these requirements. This transition
actually started last year, so your manufacturers should have been informing
you since July 20, 2006 of their plans for migration. We have allowed
options for repairing bad units. However, these must be controlled by the
manufacturers and not be made freely available. In general if the bad units
are shipped and the manufacturer replaces with a like unit this is typically
allowed in the US.

As I read this, I'd not, after July 20, 2007, be able to buy the same radios
I use in parts of my network today. I'll, instead, have to change to
whatever the new replacement product line will be and either replace all
customer gear or run two parallel networks, one old and dying due to lack of
replacement parts, and one new one. Even though the old network is only
months old. Is this correct?

rd: The situation will depend on the approach the manufacturer takes in
handling the situation. This transition has been in the rules for the last
3 years, so it should not be any surprise to anyone. In fact, all the
products or changes to products in this band were required to implement the
new requirements starting last year. A number of manufacturers have been
able to upgrade their products through software changes to meet the new
requirements. In those cases they can sell the new units as upgraded to
meet the requirements. In some cases they have chosen to remove the
operation in the impacted band. I understand some people are able to run
hybrid networks.

rd: I hope these answers your questions. Have a happy 4th of July!

Marlon - please forward this information to us at APGWireless as well. The
WISPA list donated over $1600.00 to a family in our home town that suffered
a death of a father and a child in a house fire some time ago. Although
$1600.00 does not seem like a lot - I know the mother made nothing but good
use of it. It takes a lot to start picking up the peices and put things back
together in times like this.

We would like to contribute with some $$ also.

WISPA - Let's pull together and see if we can beat that $1600.00 donated
previously for the current family in need.
