What if we contact the Media Relations persons and ask about the study
and if WISPs were included. We could educate them on our services etc
and make sure we are included next time?

We need to promote us wisps, I'm sure they didn't compare any of us in

LOL, looks to me like they are only interested in talking about the bigger
providers. Not a single regional player let alone local ones.

I agree with you Martha. This report is likely way off the mark due to the
lack of smaller provider's and their typically superior service levels.

I think our promotions committee should take this on.

We have a few customers we do backups for as well. We moved away from
Handy Backup and use believe it or not Winzip ! - Has more

We use handy backup. It's not really popular yet.

We may be over charging for space. The bitch of it is that people could
totally screw our network up with all of the backups, even if they backup

All I can say is that we have been doing off site remote backups for

years - for many Gov't facilities, personal business and even a few
individuals. We chose this: http://remote-backup.com/ software and it
has

been the greatest, most trouble free software I have ever used. Not one
moment's trouble in years.

Re: [WISPA] OT: Wasps

2007-09-21 Thread chuck
It isn't just towers either. I had a problem with my Dish from
Dishnetwork 4 weeks ago. The guy who came out came prepared with
bee-spray. Since I'd noticed them up there before, I asked about it.
He said the dish had about 300 wasps that he killed by the time he
was done with it, and he'd already been stung 3 times before he got
to my house that day. He said it's like an epidemic...just about
everywhere he goes (upstate NY), the antennas are stuffed with bees
of some sort.

Subject: [WISPA] OT: Wasps

Does anyone know what causes the swarming behavior in wasps around
towers. I dont mean a few of them hanging out having a smoke and
sharpening their stingers. I mean the big swarms of hundreds. We
were at 4 different locations yesterday. All of them were
unclimbable due to swarms of wasps. No nests on the structures
either.

Thanks

Subject: [WISPA] OT: Wasps

Does anyone know what causes the swarming behavior in wasps around
towers. I dont mean a few of them hanging out having a smoke and
sharpening their stingers. I mean the big swarms of hundreds. We
were at 4 different locations yesterday. All of them were
unclimbable due to swarms of wasps. No nests on the structures
either.

Thanks
Chris

We've been using Intermapper (which I assume does something
similar-I'm not familiar with VisualRoute). But, it's price has also
shot up for us. We've been using it since probably 1996 or so, back
when it was freeware from a group at Dartmouth. Great program.

We use Handy Back Up as well and have been very pleased with it. Actually as
someone else said they now use WinZip over HBU,
we use both depending on the job at hand. The sync feature on HBU works great for linking files from desktop to laptop or
mirroring external storage drives. http://www.handybackup.net/

Another backup program we use is NTI's Shadow for real time or scheduled backups. I like the real time backup when working
with regular daily files, which are saved to external storage drives each time the file changes. We also use NTI's Backup Now
and Drive Backup. http://www.ntius.com

months here. We ran Nagios, but we soon became immune to its alerts as so
many (like 99% of the times) were false alerts. We downloaded and tried the

If you download this to try it - - DO NOT USE ITS DEFAULT SETTINGS!! IT WILL

2007-09-21 Thread Mac Dearman
I think the real question I would ask - - going over a wireless link is:

WHERE THE HECK IS THE SECURITY?

I mean you are going to back up someone's books with no (encryption) (like
blowfish) security? I am not talking WEP either! What about restoring the
client's data? Is that something that that will take intervention on your
part? How about the client's ability to access his backups 24/7 in case of
emergency reinstall?

We use Handy Back Up as well and have been very pleased with it.
Actually as someone else said they now use WinZip over HBU, we use
both depending on the job at hand. The sync feature on HBU works great
for linking files from desktop to laptop or mirroring external storage
 drives. http://www.handybackup.net/

Another backup program we use is NTI's Shadow for real time or

regular daily files, which are saved to external storage drives each
time the file changes. We also use NTI's Backup Now and Drive Backup.

Re: [WISPA] Anyone doing remote backup for customers?

2007-09-21 Thread Ryan Langseth
I think Mac means more on the storage side. RBS sends encrypted
files to the remote server. the type where if the key is lost, so
are your files. And the files are worthless without the key. It is
fine and dandy to have an encrypted network, but if the remote backup
server has unencrypted files you are in trouble (If I wanted to steal
data I would go for the central server rather than the single
connection, bigger payday). Depending on something like simple zip
file passwords is laughable at best; maybe it has better encryption
than that, I don't know.

That being said, except for our issues with scheduling in RBS, it
has been very good.

[WISPA] Larger pole mount for Moto/Orthogon backhauls

List,

I'm trying to mount a Motorola PTP 400 series backhaul (Orthogon Gemini)
on a pole that is just ever so slightly too large for the mount that is
included in the box. Is a larger pole mount made for this radio or am I
stuck having to get a set of pipe standoffs and mount a smaller pipe to
the existing one?

Exactly...we're setting up a 1.25Gbps link for a client with line speed
AES256 encryption. I believe the link meets and will be FIPS 140-2
compliant as well. However, even with this level of security on the link
hardware it is always best to encrypt BEFORE the data leaves your network.

Best,

Re: [WISPA] Re: OT: Wasps Please read the Answer

2007-09-21 Thread Felix A. Lopez
Great question. In addition to wireless, in college I
also studied Entomology,Botony, Biology, and other
related. Anyway, I had a great entomology professor
from Ohio State. Wasps are of the family Vespidae of
the great Order Hymenoptera (which also includes the
ants and the bees).

The answer is: it is wasp MATING and the MALES are
swarming with females. The season usually every later
summer/fall until about december. Read on: The swarm
you describe are all the males fighting for the
highest perch to release their pheremones to attract
the female wasp. What's going on is the wasps are
mistaking the tower for a large tree or snag. But for
the male wasp he really just wants to be king of the
hill and find the highest perch so his pheremones
waft the furthest. What a guy! Sound familiar? Hey,
even guys want the best cologen (at least us the
single guys).

If you don't believe me read the link:

I personally don't think its the RF that attracts
 them. I have been on
many towers and tanks with no antennas mounted and
 still have to deal with
my little friends. Personally I think its the heat
 that the metal draws
from the sun and the static electricity present on
 the face of the steel.
And I agree with Butch. They are pretty passive
 unless they have built a
nest up there and you are the lucky one to find it
 or you happen to grip
one while climbing. This is obviously avoided by
 using gloves.
You really should be more concerned with birds
 (hawks, eagles, etc) that

They are attracted to the RF for some reason. As

 usually see them around this

Re: [WISPA] Anyone doing remote backup for customers?

2007-09-21 Thread Frank Muto
HBU uses Blowfish, Cobian 8 has RSA-Rijndael or Blowfish or even WinZIP AES to encrypt on their side and keep it stored
encrypted on our remote server. If it's stored unencrypted on our server, that's their problem since all we are doing is
holding it for them. If they want a redundant copy of their data stored, we can do that too.

Actually as someone else said they now use WinZip over HBU,
we use both depending on the job at hand. The sync feature on HBU works
great for linking files from desktop to laptop or
mirroring external storage drives. http://www.handybackup.net/

Another backup program we use is NTI's Shadow for real time or
scheduled backups. I like the real time backup when working
with regular daily files, which are saved to external storage drives
each time the file changes. We also use NTI's Backup Now
and Drive Backup. http://www.ntius.com

We use handy backup. It's not really popular yet.

We may be over charging for space. The bitch of it is that people
could
totally screw our network up with all of the backups, even if they
backup to
 our servers!

All I can say is that we have been doing off site remote backups
for
  several
years - for many Gov't facilities, personal business and even a
few
individuals. We chose this: http://remote-backup.com/ software
and it has
been the greatest, most trouble free software I have ever used.
Not one
  moment's trouble in years.
