Here are a few links I have archived on the subject. Something is sure
to work for your application. Good luck!

Subject: [WISPA] AC relay to reboot DC (PoE devices) suggestion?

I'm looking for an AC relay to reboot our PoE radios and I'll explain as

best I know. Basically we have 24/48V DC along with AC at our sites but
our remote reboot controllers only have AC outlets on them. What I'm
looking for is the ability to reboot our DC devices also with a sort of
relay plugged individually into each rebootable AC port that would
reboot each DC line individually. Any suggestions?

Thanks

My recent experience hasn't been very good. Ordered (4) 5.8 wideband
sectors. They sent the 4.9's. Took somewhere between 2 and 3 weeks to get
them, then took another 2-3 weeks to get the correct ones. I really hope
that they fix this - they've been solid as a rock in the past.

If you're bundling your email accounts for your Internet service customers,
then you DO receive revenue for it.

We provide 5 email accounts free of charge to our customers. Beyond that,
it's $2/month/account. We charge $1 per month per customer for Postini

Re: [WISPA] AC relay to reboot DC (PoE devices) suggestion?

2008-05-28 Thread Randy Cosby
Not exactly what you want, but we're using this:

http://www.dinrelay.com/

Includes autoping, etc. Only downside I've seen so far is that the
reboot functions don't work correctly if you use all your dc circuits
in NC - normally closed mode. We do that at a solar site to conserve
power. Without the relays being normally energized, it's very
power-efficient.

 Thanks

You have a cost effective recommendation? I guess we already had all
these AC rebooters deployed and I'd rather not have to replace them all
and SPEND MORE MONEY if you know what I mean.

I'm looking for an AC relay to reboot our PoE radios and I'll explain
as

best I know.

Re: [WISPA] AC relay to reboot DC (PoE devices) suggestion?

2008-05-28 Thread D. Ryan Spott
I use this device, with the remote monitoring built in for power and temp,
it is a lifesaver.

I even have it setup to email my phone when someone opens the door to the
radio shelter some of my APs are at. Seems that those crazy HAMs have a
habit of turning off power to your APs by accident sometimes.

http://www.remotemonitoringsystems.ca/products.php

V2 has pretty granular monitoring built into it for voltage. V1 is not so
good at lower voltage measurements.

The manufacturer has been GREAT via email for support.

Hope this helps,

Not exactly what you want, but we're using this:

http://www.dinrelay.com/

Includes autoping, etc. Only downside I've seen so far is that the
reboot functions don't work correctly if you use all your dc circuits
in NC - normally closed mode. We do that at a solar site to conserve
power. Without the relays being normally energized, it's very
power-efficient.

Re: [WISPA] Email

2008-05-28 Thread Frank Muto
Email does not have to be a money pit. Ever since our dialup days (97-02) we
charged for email after the first account. Since 2003 email with spam
filtering, Postini of course was an add-on charge. When the first major
storms hit in mid-2005, all of our hosted accounts were put on AS/AV
filtering and we charged for it. All of our web hosting with email are on
Postini and we charge for it, or they bring their own.

There is more to email now that there ever was and not just for junk mail
filtering and viruses, with the latter not as much. Backup email services
for continuity, compliance and retention services are now a must have
instead of a nice have. Compliance and backup email services can be
completely outsourced and can tie in nicely with your current services.

I have IT shops that add message security services to their menu and are
doing very well. Your local market is full of businesses needing these
services, especially any business in the health and financial services,
businesses in need of business continuity and others with just archiving
needs or spam problems.

Our largest clientele are those with Exchange servers, in-house or hosted.
Our IT shops like I said before, tie in these additional email services and
have less customer churn while increasing their average revenue per
customer.

I'm having issues with the product itself when shipped from resellers (not

Maybe that will be a better option in the future. Buying from the

[WISPA] OSPF on StarOS

2008-05-28 Thread Matt Larsen - Lists
Very valuable advice for any of you who are using OSPF on StarOS

Make sure that any of your point-to-point wireless links have the
statement ip ospf network point-to-point in each of your wireless
interface definitions, otherwise you are going to see the StarOS OSPF
act completely random and unreliable.

Under each wireless backhaul interface, put in the following statement:

int wpci0
ip ospf network point-to-point

That will fix the problem. This will allow both sides of the connection
to reach a state of full-adjacency.

I have to give credit to Butch Evans as well, as when I described my
solution last night, he brought up the point-to-point declaration as
another way of accomplishing the same thing.

This is FUNNY - Where is Rick Smith ?

Kurt - do you remember shaking guy wires on a tower while Rick Smith was
 on
 it ?

I remember it well.

You know, even at 150 or so feet in the air, Rick can actually sound like he
means to commit murder, and could accomplish it even if he had to do so by
falling on the target as he lost grip and crashed to the ground... With
satisfaction...

Fortunately, Rick had quite a bit of work left to do up there and after
dropping his camera and toolbag to the ground (camera still worked) and
losing the black tape by embedding it in the mud due to velocity, he had
become distracted from his original intent

And then trying to talk on the cell phone

Oh, and NEVER give Johnny the keys to the rental jeep. At least not if
there's mud around...

I remember the party where you took off drunk in the work van w/ U-haul
still attached going for laps around the house running over everything in
the back yard. Man I never laughed so hard in my life. I loved every
 minute
of that vacation you paid my way for me to come down to from Ohio JhonnyO,
and I got a good tan in March. Only thing usefull I learned down there was
the use of self adhesive Velcro to hold routerboards to enclosures.

Tell you what JohnnyO if you are still in the WISP business I would be
willing to come back down for free if you pay my way again.

Re: [WISPA] Email, Postini, and setting up open source mail servers

2008-05-28 Thread Tony Weasler
I second the recommendation of Postini. I set it up last year for a
multi-national that I used to work for and couldn't have asked for a
better solution. There were a few false-positives tossed into the
quarantine (mostly special offers from retailers and quasi-spam
business consultant newsletters.) The adult content filter can also
be a little restrictive so make sure you test it before enabling it
site-wide. There's a per-user web-based system for users to
un-quarantine false-positives or you can have it tag borderline messages
and you can choose how to deal with them on your mail server.

Postini was considerably better than our tweaked SpamAssassin at
avoiding false-positives and false-negatives. The PI virus filtering is
also very good. There were only one or two brand-new Trojans that made
it through PI and were caught by our local scanners on the inbound mail
server (it's important to have backup scanning.) Their back-up SMTP
spooling also saved us a few bounces when our network connectivity went
down.

Frank was easy to work with and really knew his stuff. That made for a
painless setup that took minutes. Later on we had some special needs
involving automated account management that he helped me get up and
running quickly.

So this is more than just an ad for Postini :) here are the building
blocks that I've found to work the best for an open-source mail server:

  - Linux or FreeBSD as the underlying OS
I personally prefer FreeBSD because it isn't the Jack of all trades
that Linux is. Most of you are probably more familiar with a particular
Linux flavor which should work fine.

  - Postfix http://www.postfix.org for SMTP
Sendmail is nice, but it's too complicated for most people to admin
well. For me, Postfix is the best mix of stability, simple
configuration, options, and concise documentation.

  - DBMail http://www.dbmail.org for POP3/IMAP
Hands down, this is my favorite pop/imap server. It requires database
knowledge because that's how it stores all messages and settings, but it
is incredibly fast when you have users who want to keep tens of
thousands and gigabytes of messages in their mailboxes. The Sieve
server-side message filtering is really useful for sorting messages into
mailboxes on the server during delivery. It's also really easy to
administrate a large user base because of the native DB back-end. You
can even integrate Postfix auth and spam filtering into the same DB that
DBmail uses for seamless storage of login info and spam filtering
settings.

or

  - Courier http://www.courier-mta.org/imap/ for IMAP/POP3
A very nice pop3/imap mail server that is widely used, well tested and
pretty easy to set up thanks to good online tutorials.

  - amavisd-new http://www.ijs.si/software/amavisd/ for spam/virus
filtering
Amavisd-new is a front-end for spam filters like SpamAssassin and virus
scanners like ClamAV. It doesn't get everything and you'll have to
adjust it as the spam climate adjusts, but it's free and a good back-up
to third-party filters.

Over time I've learned to keep an updated clone of the os/config drive
in a safe place so when the original drive/machine fails you just pop
the second drive into a spare machine, restore the data files from a
backup (or sync from the other data store if it's still working) and
you're off and running while you diagnose the problem with the original
server. It's cheaper than redundant servers for small installations and
keeps down-time to a minimum. This assumes that you have trained staff
on-site to deal with the potential outage. If not, you're probably
better off with online redundant servers or outsourcing the services.
For larger installs, virtual server images are really useful because
they allow you to separate your inbound, outbound, scanning, mailboxes
and storage without having to buy 5xN servers. You simply add machines
when you run low on resources in your existing pool.

This is a lot more text than I originally intended to write, but
hopefully someone will find it useful.

Best Regards,
Tony Weasler
