Travis,

I know you found a source, but if you need anything in the future, try
CablesForLess.com. They are here in Indiana, and they make custom
cables. I use them for all my cat5 patch cables and I have had good
luck. I also know they make cables for the government on old equipment
(60s and 70s vintage) that the cables are no longer made. It is not
limited to computer/network.

[WISPA] May 29, 2008 - FCC Committee Status Report

2008-05-30 Thread Jack Unger
The recent thoughtful and lively discussions about WISP use of TV White
Space underscores more than ever the need for effective WISPA advocacy
with Congress and with the FCC. I want to take this opportunity to
update all of you on how the work of WISPA's FCC Committee is progressing.

First, I want to express my thanks and my gratitude to the following
WISPA members who have recently volunteered (or in some cases
re-enlisted) to work on one or more of the new FCC Committee Workgroups.

Brian Webster
Carl Stevenson
Jim Garrett
John McDowell
Kyle Duren
John Scrivner
Dan Lubar
Steve Lane
Stephen Coran
Edward Gabrelian
Marlon Schaffer
Dave Hulsebus
Tony Morella
Paul Benner
Tom DeReggi

NOTE 1: If you were (or are) a member of the FCC Committee but you don't
see your name on the above list, please contact me as soon as possible
to let me know that you are still interested in playing an active role
on the Committee.

NOTE 2: Participation on the FCC Committee IS limited to WISPA members.
If you would like to participate and if you have been thinking of
joining, this would be a good time to sign up as either a Vendor,
Principal or Associate member here http://signup.wispa.org/. If you
have questions about membership, please direct them to the WISPA Board
here http://contact.wispa.org/.

Although most of the following twelve new Workgroups now have at least
two and in some cases as many as eight members we still need more help.
Please take a look at the following Workgroup list and let me know if
you can participate in at least one of the these new Workgroups.

Calendaring and Minutes
Level Playing Field
Engineering
TV Whitespace
3650 MHz
2.5 GHz Whitespace
Pole Attachment
Network Management and Network Neutrality
Spectrum Etiquette
Congressional Liaison
FCC Liaison
Writing

The two Workgroups most in need of assistance are the Calendaring and
Minutes and the Pole Attachment Workgroups. If you can help with one
of these or if you want more details about the specific role of any
Workgroup then please send me an email or give me a call.

WISPA listservs have been created for each Workgroup and they will be
populated by the end of the day Monday, June 2nd. Each Workgroup will
work independently however the entire Committee will meet online twice
each month where we will coordinate, communicate and assist each another
to address the many issues that extend across Workgroup lines. The
initial online meetings will be via IRC (hosted by Mt. Vernon Net). In
the future, we anticipate migrating the twice-monthly online meeting
from IRC to a conference call, hosted by WISPA.

Regarding the much anticipated FCC trip, the WISPA Board and the FCC
Committee have been budgeting and planning for this trip for several
months. The recent on-list discussions about the TV Whitespace spectrum
have been very helpful in both addressing relevant technical issues and
in providing increased focus to help WISPA develop a clear, positive and
beneficial position to present to the FCC. A lot of additional
coordination, policy formation and presentation development work still
remains to be done. Next week I anticipate that this work will be handed
off to the new TV Whitespace Workgroup and then to the new FCC Liaison
Workgroup. For now, please continue to share your thoughts and ideas on
TV Whitespace and other important spectrum issues using the either the
FCC Committee listserv ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or the FCC Discussion
listserv ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or by emailing me directly. Let me know if you
are an FCC Committee member and you need to be subscribed to the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] listserv. Anyone can subscribe themselves to the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] listserv.

Again, my thanks to those of you who have stepped up to play an
important role in WISPA's industry lobbying effort. If you have not yet
stepped up, we still need you and we want you to play an active,
positive role. We have plenty of room for every WISPA member who wants
to learn, to work and to share in our success.

Respectfully,

Jack Unger

[WISPA] WISPA Board Applications Due Monday

2008-05-30 Thread Rick Harnish
No more time to procrastinate. We have 5 applications in so far, we would
like to get to at least 10 applications. This is your chance to make a
difference.

Application Deadline is Monday, June 2nd, 2008, get your applications
submitted this week!

The 2008 WISPA Board Election schedule has been set by the current Board of
Directors.

Any and all members who are interested in entering the election process for
a seat on the board are encouraged to do so by going to
http://nominations.wispa.org/ - make sure that you qualify for the
position by checking the hurdle criteria and then fill out the application
that is also located by a hyper link
http://nominations.wispa.org/application.html at the bottom of the page.

We look forward to having a large field of qualified candidates to choose
from and encourage all who feel they have something to contribute, a heart
for the wireless industry and a desire to step up to the plate to serve this
industry to follow through with the completing of the application. We have
seen substantial growth in the past year in both principal and vendor
memberships and as WISPA continues to grow and mature into what will be the
industries finest lobbying association - we look forward to being a loud
voice in Washington D.C. for all WISPs.

DEADLINES TO BE AWARE OF:

June 2, 2008 - Applications are due.

June 9, 2008 - Qualified applicants compiled and submitted. Applicant
information is made available via the WISPA Web site for member review.

June 16, 2008 - Voting begins

June 17, 2008 - Voting ends. Standing Board announces election results.

All members are eligible to run for a board position. Only Principal and
Vendor members are eligible to vote in the election of the BoD. Only one
vote per company is allowed and accepted for the BoD election. Instructions
and credentials for voting will be sent via WISPA mail server for each
Vendor Company and each Principal Member of WISPA. If you are a
member/vendor member and do not receive these instructions for voting (as
well as credentials) it is your duty to contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] or call me
at 318.728.8600 to request help in getting your instructions and credentials
for voting in the BoD election.

ROLE OF THE WISPA BoD

The Board of Directors set the policies that will ensure the fulfillment of
all legal and professional responsibility to its members. The BoD also sets
the strategic direction of WISPA and steer it in the direction it deems best
to accomplish the tasks and deeds needed for the advancement of the WISP
community of which it serves.

The WISPA BoD is comprised of 7 WISPA Members. Each of the directors shall
serve for a term of one (1) year and until his successor is elected and
qualified, or until such directors earlier death, resignation, incapacity to
serve or removal.

All paid WISPA members are eligible for board positions, however the
majority of board seats will be filled by WISPA Principal members as stated
in the bylaws located at http://www.wispa.org/?page_id=4

At the risk of starting another one of those famous flamewars, is this

losing common-carrier protection if someone paying for filtering still

I promise this isn't a troll - I really am not too familiar with the law

[WISPA] IDS

Hi,

I'm looking for a quick and easy IDS package (ISO would be preferred)
that I can install for some basic network sniffing (viruses, worms,
SMURF, DOS, etc.). I know about Snort, but it is a huge project to get
everything installed and working correctly. Anyone know of an ISO (even
with Snort ready to run), etc.? or something similar?

There was a Linux distro called Sentinix that has since become
unmaintained. It was a canned distro with Nagios, Snort, Cacti, MRTG all
loaded up and ready to go. If you're looking for something quick and
easy it might be worth a shot, although the packages are likely quite
old by now.

Sorry to be coming in late on this thread... are we talking about
content filtering? Like not allowing playboy.com to people that want
that type service? If so, we have been doing that for over 5 years.
Schools, libraries, government agencies, residential users, etc. all
pay "extra" (from $1/month to $100/month depending on number of users
and load).

That's exactly what we're talking about - I'm specifically concerned
about the legal implications of an ISP offering it, not whether it's
fiscally viable. (That's pretty much a given - something like
DansGuardian and some clever firewalling/routing voodoo can be set up

on your network topology and your budget.)

I'm curious as to whether an ISP offering content filtering incurs any
extra legal exposure, and risks losing common-carrier status if, for
instance, someone pays for block the porn! and some porn gets through
anyway.

Most of the case law on this subject that I've seen is five to ten years

We've never had a legal issue in all the years we have offered the

[WISPA] FCC changes

2008-05-30 Thread Travis Johnson
This could turn in to something it shouldn't really fast...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/30/AR2008053002776.html

We charge 100% of the remaining contract because we are eating the cost
on the equipment and rolling a truck (for both installation and pickup).
Now they want to regulate how much we can charge for early termination. :(

Re: [WISPA] 'family friendly' isp filtering solutions

I'm looking into providing a 'family friendly' option to our

for customers. Who out there is offering this type of service, and
what are the simple (and profitable) ways of doing it??

You may want to look at OpenDNS (www.opendns.com) as a possible
solution. It allows you to configure the components that you block
and is a really easy thing to do. All you would have to do is set
up your network with them, then redirect their DNS traffic to the
opendns servers. That's all there is to it.
