Re: [WISPA] Trango Giga Problem

2009-04-03 Thread Brad Belton
Have to disagree with Tom's advice here. It is never a good idea to
briefly/temporarily change channels within a licensed band without
consulting a qualified frequency coordinator.

We did consider interference as a possibility once upon a time, but
consulted with our frequency coordinator before trying a different channel
plan. Only after indentifying a second available freq pair did we change
channels briefly/temporarily just to see if interference was the issue. It
was not.

While interference is possible in the licensed bands it will most likely be
caused by someone "briefly/temporarily" changing channels when they
shouldn't.

You can also simply turn off the transmitter on the far side and view RSSI
readings. If they show higher than what your expected noise floor should be
then you might have an interfering source to hunt down. Simply changing
channels at will briefly or otherwise within licensed bands should never be
attempted.

Best,

Brad

Also, don't assume its not interference. Licensed gets interference to. If
your MSE is showing Interference its very possible that is exactly what you
are having.
You may need to briefly/temporarilly change channels to verifiy.

2009-04-03 Thread Tom DeReggi
Big Brother already started comming with those darn Traffic Cameras. I got
6 tickets (40mph in newly posted 25-30 mph zones) within 2 weeks.
They plan to eventually have them at EVERY Intersection here.
I'm suspecting more privacy will be lost as more networks become
operated/controlled by governments.
I'm hoping the Broadband Stimulus "public safety" goals means mobile
broadband to officers on the street or inter-agency, and not more traffic
control.
PS. A little off topic to Cyber Security, but relevent to Big Brother :-)

Re: [WISPA] [WISPA Members] Resurrect old Microwave paths back tocheaper bandwidth?

2009-04-03 Thread Blake Bowers
Don't believe it. ATC charges simply because they can. And to
be blunt, they really don't care much about a prospective customer
unless it is a cellular customer.

I know, and others know, where the majority of the prints on the
AT&T towers are kept, and so does both AT&T and ATC. They
simply have no desire to worry about them as they can charge you
for the study. And don't think that the next renter won't have to pay,
as every customer changes the engineering somewhat.

You know that AT&T had more than one copy of the engineering
for the towers, no one employee got to keep them all.

There is a company in GA that has the prints also for almost all
of the long lines towers, they are quite reasonable to purchase.

Even when dealing with AT&T directly for space on towers
they still own - there is a minimum 2500.00 application fee.

If you are running 100' of LMR400 on each end then your cableloss
settings are probably close enough, but I'd adjust them slightly to
this:

cableloss 1.5 2.3 3.9

Check now and see if your "End 1" link 10 results have improved.

If not then adjust your "End 1" targetrssi from -35 to -31 and run your
link 10 command again.

We've never enabled ATPC, so I'm not sure if that is helping you are
possibly hurting you. Let's disable it on both ends and see if we can
manually get the link to settle in with better than -32db MSE and
0.00E+00 BER readings. We'll do this by adjusting your power levels,
targetrssi and cableloss settings.

What does your path analysis show your expected RSSI should be and at
what power level?

I assume this link has production traffic running across it and can't be
taken offline?

If I change target rssi on end 1, rssi changes on the linktest on end 1

Re: [WISPA] [WISPA Members] Resurrect old Microwave paths back to cheaper bandwidth?

2009-04-03 Thread Nathan Stooke
Hello,

This is neat to see. I know a lot of the Western Union towers where
taken down. At least in the Midwest, we had a WISP in our area that was
taking them down for years as a side job.

I wish it was easy to rent from American. We tried to get on 10 of
the old ATT towers in our area, but American had to do an engineering study
and site plan for each one. That was going to cost us about $5000 each. We
had to pay for it because we where the first company wanting to get on the
tower. Seems when they bought the towers, the ATT guy that managed them for
40 years keep the plans as part of the severance pay. He held out on
American so long they just said forget it we are not going to buy the plans
for the towers. I have tried to tell them our gear is so small it will not
matter, but they insist on doing the site plan and engineering study. So we
never got on any of the towers and do this day no one else has either.

I hope American someday wants to rent space on them.

I've been working on a consolidated map of the fiber available around
the country and was thinking about who would have infrastructure that would
be worth showing. As I was thinking it occurred to me that back in the day
fiber did not exist, Ma Bell did everything on microwave. So I dug around
the internet and found some interesting old maps. One is the old AT&T long
lines microwave network and the other is the old Western Union network.
If a few WISP's wanted to get together and start rebuilding these paths
from their areas back to a big city, the towers are mostly still in place
and some of them still have the dishes. We know the paths exist (many of
them were 6 GHz) and they are well documented for the original designs on
the net. American Tower owns many of the olds sites now so it should be easy
to lease the space. The paths all terminate in major telecom hubs so it
should be easy to get bandwidth.
Just thought I would put these out there as food for thought for the
WISP's who are trying to get a lot of bandwidth cheap in rural markets.
Maybe these old networks pass through your area.. Have fun!

Gino,

Looks to me like you are running a little hot. You want the MSE to be
-32 or better I would try turning the power down on each side 1db at
a time until you get the best MSE (on the remote side) while still
having the best signal.

We had to turn one of our links down to +12 to get the best MSE, while
still having a -40 signal.

Re: [WISPA] Trango Giga Problem

2009-04-03 Thread Brad Belton
Not necessarily true with high frequency or millimeter microwave gear. Due
to large fade issues inherent with higher frequencies it is not uncommon to
engineer a link with -35 RSSI levels.

I believe the Giga is safe down to -25 RSSI or thereabouts. However the
higher the modulation rate the "less hot" you can run it.

First off, I believe your signal is too hot. turn the tx power down til you
reach between a -50 and -60 dB. That is usually the sweet spot on most RF
equipment. Right now you are screaming at each other.

I know the feeling. We had one of our early Giga links working for
months not realizing we had made mistakes until later.

Got your configs...but also send me the link 10 results along with the
type and length of cable on each end.

Brad

What is your expected RSSI per your path analysis What is your

version software are you running on both sides

Maybe the best thing to do is run a sysinfo command on both ends and
send me the results off list.

Re: [WISPA] Trango Giga Problem

2009-04-03 Thread Joe Miller

First off, I believe your signal is too hot. turn the tx power down til you
reach between a -50 and -60 dB. That is usually the sweet spot on most RF
equipment. Right now you are screaming at each other.
