I used to use those 7 ft. helium balloons as advertising when I had another
business years ago. They had pretty good lift! Sounds like a good idea.
Not sure how you could test a full speed link with a dish but an Omni could
be put on it with a Mikrotik 411 board. Then you could use cat5 riser cable
to tether it. At least you could see a signal that way.

Re: [WISPA] Verify Link Analysis

2009-07-17 Thread George Rogato
I have a 10'red balloon that we used to float a few years back for tower
siting purposes.

I wasn't able get too much equipment on that balloon and expect it to float.

I tried it with an old map2 with rubber ducky and cat5 as the line and
the balloon had a hard time rising.

The calculation is 1 gram of weight to 1 liter of helium.

You have to take into consideration the weight of the balloon and the
weight of the rope. Cat is heavier than tether line.

Good news is, a set of binoculars lets you at least spot it which is
what we ended up doing.

George

I guess there are always exception to the rule.. .Extra port is a
convienience , may not be applicable in all senarios.

Besides, one would have to worry about power consumed in total, standard
802.3af puts out about 15-20w only..

..On the Shireen unit, why are there 3 data jacks and a coax power
jack?

Thanks.

Great find one the Inscapedata product!! That's exactly what I'm
 looking for!!!

A POE switch and converter modules are definitely an option, but it
kinda defeats my purpose (getting rid of all my POE adapters running
 up a
tower).

Fyi... The other options is to use a standard POE switch (802.3 af)
and use these module to convert the voltage..

Ooh good idea - you can use a MT to do an ip-scan

If it wants to look for snmp, Internet, DNS, etc it will ARP request for the
gateway - see if a packet capture shows this request.

Subject: [WISPA] 3.65 earth station contacts

I am now licensed for 3.65, but I have to get permission from an earth
station (Andover ME), as I'm just inside it's 150km radius.

The PDF showing the list of earth stations and exclusion zones looks useful,
but is really just the start of a goose chase.

The other ISPs in the states surrounding the earth station either have no 3.65
links registered, or the links fall outside of the zone. Had there been an ISP
nearby that had gone through this, I would have checked with them.

The call signs located at Andover when you go to register a location, or
reference the PDF listing are not in the FCC ULS database. They are apparently
FCC international bureau issued call signs and IB does not have a searchable
online database and did not return my phone call.

I can't find anything in the chamber of commerce business directory for
Andover, the switchboard yellow pages for andover.

The Andover earth station is owned by MCI/Verizon and I get the usually
helpless script followers on the other end of the line, Sir, we just open up
trouble tickets, or try calling this number in really poor english.

Has anyone else been through this? How do I get the information needed to
request an agreement?

Thanks!

[WISPA] Question re: WISP for sale

2009-07-17 Thread Patrick D. Nix, Jr
I apologize as I know this has been discussed on the list before. We
are entertaining the idea of selling out of our respectable size
wireless ISP business in eastern Oklahoma. We have about 500 (growing
daily) subscribers. Anyway, we are working on determining the net worth
of the business. Any thoughts or formulas for determining this?

One way I have heard it done:

Take the annual gross revenue, times it by 3 (three years gross revenue) and
that's the buy out cost starting point. Seen this more so with telecom

I also wanted to throw this in..

If the owner does not have the resources to operate and maintain the
customers (there for the revenue) then one can offer the price it would cost
for that owner to remove the equipment from the towers (where leasing) and
sell the towers and cut their losses. Or just a bit less then that.

you have. I know someone who can do that type of work :-) But not until

Revenue matters a lot less now. Earnings-based deals are what are
being done now. Of course, many WISPs are spending all of their

Re: [WISPA] Question re: WISP for sale

2009-07-17 Thread Tom DeReggi
I'd point out that the best time to get a high valuation in a rural area is
not likely going to be at the launch of a $7billion dollar grant program.
Why buy other's outdated equipment when you can get the brand new state of
the art for FREE? You are probably going to have to rely more on cash
flow related methods of valuation.

Instead, you might want to look at your finances, and see if your network
could be leveraged to be combined with another's RUS loan/grant.
For example, if the assets could be leveraged to make expanding from it more
cost effective. Because then your value might be higher based on the
additional grants that are enabled because your infrastructure helps qualify
it.

Re: [WISPA] Question re: WISP for sale

2009-07-17 Thread Tom DeReggi
I disagree with comments relating to X times annual revenue.
I think the issue is more that buyers are realizing that in this market and
economy X times revenue doesn't adequately valuate a company.
A 3-4X times annual could still be achieved if the most of the gross revenue
was actually monthly profit. Some businesses are in that situation.
They have their gear paid for, most of their reoccuring costs are in-kind
trade, etc.
The problem is that isn't usually the case, which is why they get 1X
valuations, if even that.. Usually what occurs is, a business has next to no
profit, poor cashflow, and leased out the kazu for 3-5 years, and thus is
tired out of working long hours for free. Further the buyer has to consider
risk, and in this economy its uncertain whether business models will mature
to success.

I think you need to really look at your business to determine its profile,
before you can begin to establish a worth or a method of valuating it.

For example, Surely a company that owns a million dollars of gear outright
is not going to be valued the sam as a company that has 3 years of leases
remaining on their books for the same amount.

You could also look at how to get rid of your primary costs. For example,
maybe backhaul is one of the large expenses? If so would a WISP that got a
middle mile infrastructure grant, benefit by your network?

The biggest problem I see with getting a high valuation on a 500 sub network
is that there might not be enough subs to really cover the payroll of techs
on the street that buyer would have to obtain to manage it.

positive. Unfortunately, too many operators that would normally be
interested in a deal are hoping for a windfall thanks to ARRA. This
means that the supply of available companies is low.

I think I am going to be stuck buying companies not interested in ARRA.

Instead, you might want to look at your finances, and see if your

I was wondering if anyone has setup a Mikrotik Dual Nstreme link using
the Ubiquiti XR3 (3.65GHz) cards?

I have a PTP link setup currently with these XR3 cards and I'm getting
about 21Mbps in each direction with TCP and about 29Mbps with UDP. I was
wondering kind of increased performance will I get in any given
direction if I add to more radios (and antennas) and switch to Dual Nstreme.

Re: [WISPA] Dual Nstreme using XR3

2009-07-17 Thread Rubens Kuhl
Hi All!

I've been lurking a while on the list, and knew some of you at last
chat session.

My solution of choice for this is using OSPF with unqueal costs,
inverted on RX and TX:

cost 1 - cost 2
cost 2 - cost 1

This will achieve a high real word throughput because TCP traffic
generates the same amount of packets per second in either direction,
and Wi-Fi based radios are very pps limited.

You won't be able to get 25+25=50 Mbps Iperf tests, but it will give
performance for dealing with real IP traffic. In case of any failures,
all traffic will still flow via surviving radio.

If you still need twice the throughput then, doing a 4 radio scenario
would be fine:
cost 1 - cost 2
cost 1 - cost 2
cost 2 - cost 1
cost 2 - cost 1

Links with equal costs will be balanced by OSPF.

Re: [WISPA] Question re: WISP for sale

2009-07-17 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
I think it really needs to tie into the net you've seen (if any).

1 to 1.5 annual revenue seems to hold up pretty well. More if you have a
great customer base (lots of high dollar businesses) vs. the average (mix of
business but mostly resi).

It's a business like most any other as far as profit margins and sales go.
At least that's what we're seeing so far. The big exception to that is when
a guy is going broke or just wants to get out, no matter what. Then these
go for pennies on the dollar. Again, just like any other business that I
know of :-).

One way I have heard it done:

Take the annual gross revenue, times it by 3 (three years gross revenue)
 and
that's the buy out cost starting point. Seen this more so with telecom
(voice) then data services, but it's a place to start.

Yeah don't expect over 2x annual revenue right now. 1x might be more
realistic. depending on the network and what a new operator would have to
 do
to bring it into theirs, etc.

I have heard .5-2 times annual many times on this list

One way I have heard it done:

Take the annual gross revenue, times it by 3 (three years gross revenue)

that's the buy out cost starting point.  Seen this more so with telecom
(voice) then data services, but it's a place to start.

Re: [WISPA] Dual Nstreme using XR3

Which makes an interesting dilemma: 1 20 MHz channel versus 2 10 MHz
channels, TDD x FDD.
My guess: TDD wil work better for short distances due to ACK timing,
FDD for larger distance will perform better, but this is strongly
traffic pattern dependent.

Re: [WISPA] Dual Nstreme using XR3

2009-07-17 Thread Travis Johnson

I have a 73 mile link using Mikrotik with SR5 cards using a 20mhz
channel. I can get 26Mbps (compared with 30Mbps on a 10 mile link).

A single 20mhz channel is much easier to setup, troubleshoot, etc.
