Correct. Protect the rights of our customers, protect the rights of the
service provider AND allow for what LEA needs to get a conviction for
the guilty party. All of these are built into CALEA.

In addition, the WCS for IPNA provides technical requirements as well.
It defines the technical standard that our software/hardware MUST meet.
For the original poster: Be sure you are familiar enough with the way
the MT handles the CALEA software so that you can properly capture this
data for the LEA. Mikrotik's CALEA implementation is 2 parts. It
requires a server AND a tap. One box CAN be both pieces.

The easy answer is if you get a warrant you should ask the agency for
help before doing anything. They are more than willing to help in my
experience. My advice is:

1.Get your attorney involved to the point they know what you are doing
2.Call the agency who the warrant is for and ask for technical assistance.

They have done this many times and can make sure you don't mess things up.

Re: [WISPA] net neutrality... Two articles...

2011-03-06 Thread John Scrivner
This reply represents my opinions and is not an official position of WISPA.

There is no official position within WISPA regarding Net Nuetrality that I
have ever seen. If there was then we would likely see it on our website and
in our filings. The general consensus I have seen is that our focus is best
placed in other areas. Nobody in WISPA wants pure Net Neutrality. There is
some discussion that many believe that it should be applied to national
carriers (those who sell pipes to other providers) to assure that the main
pipes feeding WISPs are not turned into tollways for every piece of content.
I am of the opinion that the larger national retail broadband carriers
(CableCos, Telcos and Cellcos) will do the fighting to beat it no matter
what position we take. So picking our battles is where I think we need to
be. Net Neutrality is not the biggest obstacle we face.

If auctions sell all the prime spectrum to the highest bidders then this is
a far bigger obstacle to our future. If an Internet Tax (aka re-purposed
USF and / or CAF) are allowed to come into play this will seriously harm
WISPs as these will almost certainly be limited to ILECs, RBOCs and CMRS
carriers. This will put many WISPs into the unfortunate position of having
to collect taxes from their customers and in return seeing none of the money
going to them. Worse it will help pay their competitors to put them out of
business. So I believe WISPA is fighting more for spectrum issues and is
working on how to position themselves regarding Internet Taxes. The USF
issue may become tricky as we have many WISP members who are also ILECs and
CLECs who would likely support some forms of USF. I am not in that category
at all. I want to see ZERO INTERNET TAXES OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER.

I have what I believe is an interesting slant that WISPs could benefit from
regarding Net Neutrality. At this point there is enough fighting between the
larger interests that nobody is really concentrating on an opportunity I
feel we can all take advantage of. If we all upgrade our networks to meet
Net Neutrality requirements in the future then an interesting benefit
happens for our industry. Cellcos look at Net Neutrality as being absolute
toxic to their models. They want to control all content and charge a premium
for every bit that passes through their over-priced networks. This is
their Achilles heal in my opinion.

If we were to work toward expanding upstream and backhaul capacity, lowering
subs per AP and lowering the bit over-subscription levels on our networks
then we could use Net Neutrality principles as a marketing tool to give us
an edge over the other alternatives including satellite and cellcos.
Interestingly I am of the belief that I hope Net Neutrality fails not
because I want to sell premium access to content to my subscribers but
because I feel that I can use the idea of equal access to all content to
make my service a better option to my customers than satellite or cellcos.
In the end it means a more robust network which is always a good thing
regardless of whether a regulation tells me to do it or not.

Within a year I plan to have my network running at Net Neutrality abilities
and at the same time hoping Net Neutrality regulation fails. I am covered
either way as I see it. I believe in the long run that those who embrace the
equal access principles of Net Neutrality, whether it is mandated or not,
will be the carriers of choice by most all customers. I also believe you
will see television over broadband becoming more and more prevalent which
will be tough to support but will help drive adoption of fixed wireless
(those who have robust enough networks to handle the load) in rural areas
and fiber in urban deployments.

So should WISPA try to fight the Net Neutrality battle or focus on other
issues? You guys know where I stand. If anyone wants to be part of the
effort to decide what WISPA does then join us. We can use your help.

Why don’t you join WISPA and be part of the process instead of taking pot
shots from the “hinterlands”. It is time you stepped up to be counted.

For the record, I am personally “totally against” Network Neutrality; at
least the versions that have been presented thus far. Forcing unmanaged
network content on broadband infrastructure operators will have dire
consequences in the operation of the Internet and the businesses that
 provide it.

If you want a plug/jack, I would go to the nearest electrical supply

Hi,

Do they require a CAT5 run to each AP, or are they repeaters as well?

Subject: [WISPA] Indoor N Mikrotik Router

Are there any companies making an indoor Wireless N solution
based upon Mikrotik? I have a need for some indoor N series routers. Have been
deploying the Netgear N300, but need an AP which supports POE for a few places.
I would like to buy something pre-built if possible that is pleasing to be in
an indoor environment.

Thanks,

Weatherproofing.
Lack of testing.
I am not saying it couldn't be, just that it probably isn't as that is
not the designed usage. And in many places, without a UL or similar
rating, the local electrical inspector won't like it if he finds it.

Actually, right after sending the last e-mail, I thought, the
weatherproofing may be the problem. Yes it is all metal inside, but the
2 pieces are not bonded to each other when you put in the gasket. No way
to ensure a low resistance connection between the box and the back of
the antenna.

Re: [WISPA] 110 input for ARC enclosure

2011-03-06 Thread Jerry Richardson
You got me thinkingbeing on a public streetlight I doubt it would pass code
without a UL stamp.

But by the time I get the adapter, both ends of the Bulgin, the cable, and the
power supply I can buy the FP-288 http://www.midsouthglobal.net/FPOwl.htm which
is 24VDC out. Then I can just use the standard RJ45 weatherproof connector kit.

Less hassle to be sure. The only downside is that I can't get to the PSU - have
to replace the whole adapter.

Re: [WISPA] 110 input for ARC enclosure

2011-03-06 Thread Tom DeReggi
The House and Energy Committee will have a hearing this Wednesday, regarding
H.J. Res 37, Disapproving the rule submitted by the Federal Communication
Commission with respect to regulating the Internet and broadband industry
practices.

I, Tom DeReggi, representing RapidDSL Wireless, have accepted the honor of
testifying before Congress at this hearing.
I'd like to note that this will be the second time a WISP will testfiy on this
topic within a 2 week period, strengthening the relevence of our WISP Industry.

In summary, if successful, and H.J. Res 37 is passed, it will reverse and
nullify FCC's recent NetNEutrality rules. This is our chance to kill the poor
NetNeutrality rules instantly in its tracks.

Quick background.
a.. On Monday, Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee Fred Upton
(MI-6) and Chairman of the Communications and Technology Subcommittee Greg
Walden (OR-2) announced that on Wednesday they would markup H.J. Res. 37 . For
those of you unfamiliar with the term markup, It means they would have limited
debate followed by a vote on the resolution and any amendments .
b.. On Tuesday, Representatives Waxman (CA-30) and Eshoo (CA-14) sent a
letter to the Chairs asking for them to hold a hearing on H.R. Res 37 before
markup (as is standard practice).
c.. On Wednesday (march 2nd), the Communications and Technology Subcommittee
announced that they would delay the markup, and hold a hearing on it at some
point in the future.
The future is this upcoming Wednesday the 9th!! Talkin about quick action!!

Now it is our chance to send FCC Chairman Genacowski (and commissioners) a
clear message. That we will NOT accept rule making that IGNORES the interests
of small business WISPs, and that we will go over their heads, if they ignore
us. So why, am I so much against NetNeutrality? MANY REASONS. But the most
obvious was that the FCC gave special consideration to mobile wirless carriers,
but lumped Fixed Wireless Providers in with Fiber and wireline providers with
out ANY consessions for our unique disadvantages industry. Giving reasonable
network mangement and usage billing was NO WHERE NEAR ENOUGH to address
WISP's concerns. What the FCC really gave us was uncertainty, more
regulations, more technical distractions, and more liabilty, that surely would
lead to higher legal costs and customer support frustrations. NetNEutrality
empowered and entitled Content providers and Consumers to control our networks,
but left Access Providers to Foot the Bill. We were no longer free to etablish
our own business model, but instead forced to be an Advance Broadband Company
(Streaming Video), if we wanted to offer broadband without legal consequences.
We need to take our authority back as private business and network owners. We
actually have a really good chance to win Wednesday. Why, because the service
provider industry (ILECS, CLECs, CableCos, WISPs, MobileWireless) is almost
unaminously united in the fight against the FCC overstepping their bounds, and
the committee is now majoirty Republican, and isn't obligated to follow the
president's party. Verizon has already opened legal suit against the FCC as
well, and threatening to stop investment.

We need to convey several core messages, likely the top 3 most importance. That
NetNeutrality rules (as-is) will..
1. reduce or slow Investment in broadband build out.
2. slow bringing broadband to all Americans and underserved areas
3. cause loss of jobs or reduce jobs. (counter democrat's claim that
NetNEutrality will create jobs)
4. harm small business access providers, and stiffle innovation
5. harm our subscibers, or degrade service to our subscribers.
6. creates challenges in network management or operations, which rules are not
reasable to comply with. (over burdening).
7. are a distraction that take us away from our more important goal, to deploy
broadband

I'm still writing my presentation/testimony, so dont have it to share with
membership yet.

Right now the Republicans are on a rampage to help us. Lets show them our
support and that we are watching. (Please note I am NOT endorsing a specific
party and am not meaning to favor republicans or democrats. I am refering to
them only in the context of my observations of where I've read that the
majority in the party tend to stand currently on this specific topic/process)

I suggeset a plan of action for members.
To flood the House Committee members with support letters to PASS HJ RES 37.

I've attached a list of the committee members to contact. A higher priority may
be to convince democrat members.

I suggest sending these support letters Tuesday Morning.
Simply state, that you are a WISP, and that you SUPPORT HJ Res 37, and
encourage your representative to PASS the bill.to overturn the FCC's poor
NetNEutrality rule making.
Then if you have any additional comment to add, follow with that, specifically
things like, you are now
