So very eloquantly said! Do Motorola - and companies like them - a favour:

Quoting Tom:

What often happens, is technical people
make these beautiful products from a technical point of view, but they are
worthless because they don't solve the problems that need to be solved for
its applications, which were the reasons for originally developing the
technology.

Man have you hot the nail on the head! Motorola is a company that gets
caught in this all the time. I can't tell you how many times over the years
I went to product introduction seminars as a 2 way radio dealer and the lead
engineer would be touting all the cool wiz bang features of the new radio.
It would always happen where a dealer would stand up and ask does the radio
still do XYZ? They would get a glassy eyed stare and say no, that is old
technology and we did not include it in this model The follow up statement
from the dealer would be do you realize that 80% of our customer base
still uses this technology, what do we tell them? and the engineer would
say They will need to upgrade to the new technology. My take on this was
that they spent so much time patting themselves on the back in the lab with
their new toys that they never researched what the customer wanted and
needed to solve their communication problem. Typical Motorola attitude, they
will tell the customer what they need or what they will be
getting...They still have not learned this lesson...which is too
bad because they do have the ability to make great products and great
radios.

Anyhow, which show you should go to really
depends on what you want to do. If I had my way I'd go to ALL of
them. They ALL have something to offer if you're willing to listen and
  learn.

I just got back from the annual www.ec-expo.com. That's a free show
with lots of product specific stuff. There's a GREAT group that goes to
this one and lots of help is available. Charles, Matt, I, Damien
(Tranzeo), and a few others (forgive me) had a very good very high level chat
about a number of things. I picked up quite a few new bits from here and
there. AND I ran into David Huges. I hope I am half as with it at
78 as he is! (Yeah yeah, I'm already half as good. Har har
  grin)

WISPCON has always been about nothing but
  wisps.

  WCA is more carrier based.

ISPCon is a GREAT show. The wireless track
is light as there's usually only one track. But there's a lot to running
a wisp than just wireless stuff.

I think about the best mix would be to go to one
or two different ones each year.

Excellent post, Tom.

I have been an attendee and a presenter at
WISPCON I and II. Once with anOptical Wireless company,
Plaintree Systems and once with Marlon's startupof 2002, WNOC.
Both were outstanding experiences.

I personally got alot of value from the WISPCON
shows, especially meeting the people behind the posts on this (and other)
lists.

Those WISPCON days were more about the
relationships. This list has some close roots, and the shows then
were about connecting, wirelessly and spiritually, so-to-speak. I met
Marlon and Bullet and Steve Stroh (hiya Steve!) for the first time in
Chicago, and it was a hoot!Learning and having fun are two things that
do it for me, especially if I can do them at the same time.

I have been away from the directWISP loop
since 2002,running my own kind of Networking
business. However, I still enjoy the WISP
listconversations, and have stayed in touch.

And am glad I did stay in touch, for I have
just signed an agreement to work with a company called Arryba Communications
- whose mission is to provide high speed Internet to Rural Eastern Ontario
(that's me!).Besides being obvious self-interest, Arryba has a
very interesting business model, and their timing and leadership are spot
on.

I would like to attend a spring show, and would
beinterested in knowing where the best shows are now, for its time for
me to reconnect with the WISP world. Marlon? Steve? Victoria?
Where do you guys hang?

reasons I got involved with ISPCON, and think its the best overall show.
Its one of the reasons the show is filled by executives as well as staff from
the large ISPs. However, each show has its unique benefits. WISPCON has a
tremendous amount to offer a newbie WISP, who has one primary goal, to learn
what Wireless is about. I'd argue that WISPCON is probably the best show for a
new technican to learn more about wireless. ISPCON has been fantastic
for people deciding whether they should get into wireless. WiNog, for
advanced WISPs. However, this is a very generalized summary. You can find a
little bit about everything from all the shows.

My personal opinion is, that if someone had to
chose just one show to attend, it would be ISPCON. Because it offers a little
about everything, because it has the funding and experience management to be
nothing but top professional. Its also has a VERY strong advisory
board of experts that help direct its direction. However, that
opinion is not meant to take anything away from the other shows. Look
carefully at the show agendas, and then pick the one that caters best to the
needs you are looking for. If you want an ALL wireless show, thats not
whats ISPCON is all about. Wireless is just one tool in the
  shed.

Dear John,

What a magnificent human being you are. I can't even begin to imagine what
you went through, and the toll it has taken on your senses.

Please don't suffer alone. Find someone to talk to - get it out of your
system before it starts to fester.

Subject: [WISPA] Restoring the Gulf Coast

I just got back last night from the gulf affected areas after helping
crews establish Internet and phone service for use by evacuees and
assistance staff. It looks like a thermo-nuclear device detonated on the
gulf coast. Bay of St. Louis (across from Gulf port) is nothing but a
landfill with bull-dozed paths through the debris to clear roadways. I
cried, everyone cried, it was life altering. On television it is awful
but you can go to the other room when you are watching on television.
When you are there you cannot get away from it. I thought I was going to
have an anxiety attack when I first got to Bay of St. Louis. You cannot
smell or feel the sense of what it is like there unless you are actually
there. I took pictures but wondered why. It was almost a sick feeling to
photograph such devastation.

I came home last night and I still feel a little shell shocked. I am not
right. I am definitely more right in the head than those who lived
through the experience and those who have been there since day one. I
don't know how people who are helping can last as long as they are.
There are people there who have been helping non-stop for 2 weeks. I
cannot imagine it. I spent four days helping and thought I was going to
fall apart mentally and physically. I am not as strong as I thought I
was. At least I did some good there. I am glad I went even though I will
never be completely the same person ever again.
